Who has been more valuable? Favre or Allen?

Both have been stellar for the Vikes, but play on opposite sides of the ball.  In my mind, either one has a decent shot at league MVP, but what do you think?  I know it's not easy to compare offense stats to defense stats, but think about it this way-

If one was lost for a game, which absence would make a bigger impact on the outcome?  I would say "Favre", but I am ready to be surprised by the fellow armchair analysts...

Right now

I have to say Favre is the better MVP candidate. 17 TDs and 3 INTS? It is hard to argue those stats.

Favre has clearly made a big difference in this team. Jared Allen was an animal last year as well but couldn’t carry a team to victory on his shoulders the way Favre has done at times this year.

Maybe even more telling is when he's thrown his TDs.

Of those 16, 12 have come against the Packers (who had the 3rd best pass D in the league before this game), the Ravens and the 49ers. In other words, he’s putting up his best games against the best teams. The one exception is agains the Steelers, when he didn’t throw a TD, but he did put up 334 yards passing in that game.

Contrast with Tom Brady, who’s thrown 15 TDs this year: 11 of those game against Buffalo, Tennessee and Tampa Bay.

Hmm

interesting, hadn’t thought of it that way.

Hopefully those that think the man is an attention hog diva will also take note, and shut up about it.

dont take this seriously

but dude this is a really dumb comparison….favre is by far more valuable to us then JA is….both of them are beasts i would agree but favre is the more valuable person right now…especially after our sweep of the cheese heads

I was just curious (I am one of those silly Pack fans)

At the start of the season, the media (in general) saw Favre as a “safety net” type of QB, not one that could actually do some damage. I was just wondering if VIke fans felt like that before, now, or if you guys always knew what you had. Favre has always been one of the best (if not the most exciting) QB’s.

I felt from the get go that he would be the catalyst

The Vikings had great pieces and added to these with Harvin and Favre pick ups plus other moves….

The difference though is having someone to gel these into a coherent and focused unit…which I did feel Brett could do…He is an inspiration for us all…

There was a lot of trepidation from all fans I think about the move to bring him in, and the first couple of weeks we saw the control the game side from him that I think most expected…and it was good…

Since that point though we have seen so much more from him….at choke time he delivers more often than not, as in the glory Packer days….not always, but who does always? This has been WAY past good….great I would say…

I am an old man too (much older than he is but still young compared say to my mother who is REALLY old LOL), and I know that in spite of the years, if you have the heart and will, and play the game in an intelligent manner, you will win more than lose….

As Teddy Roosevelt states in his Man In The Arena blurb, I would rather be in the arena than those weak poor souls watching the game from the stands…in a literal and figurative sense I choose to live in this manner….as does Favre….That is past great, that is SUPER…

This is the reason more so than any other that I think he is a leader, role model, teacher, and game changer in his current role and wearing the beloved Purple….and what also will hopefully carry this team to finally reach that sweetest of spots in the NFL – the SB and getting that W in that arena/setting! Again SUPER…

If not, so be it, but it will not be for a lack of effort….100% and more effort, week in and week out…THAT is what it is all about, in the NFL or life…I am a fan of life, and I love to see people excel at their chosen vocation, whether it be in the kitchen (I am a chef as well, but after soooo long out of the back of the house action, am woefully inadequate nowadays) or on the football field….

Ahhhhhh, enjoying this coffee (tastes so much better with this W)….

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

Safety Net?

Most of the analysts I heard talked about how the only thing this team was missing was good quarterback play to be a contender, and they said Fave would give us that.

My opinion has always been that he’s a high risk, high reward player. As in, if he’s healthy he’ll give us a great chance to win, but if he gets hurt we’re in trouble. Basically, what happened to the Jets last year.

My concern is still, if he gets hurt, will he stay on the sidelines and get healthy and let one of the guys take a few snaps until he can come back at 100%, or at least 85%.

Impact, not Safety Net

I wasn’t particularly impressed with Favre as a choice because I wanted us to go for a franchise QB who will be here for us over the next 15 years, not just 1 or 2 years. But we passed on all the possibilities there and ended up with the Old Dude… and it worked out.

His performance has been above and beyond the best we could have reasonably expected, but most of all, I’m pleased that I’m starting to believe Favre’s actually a good guy. With all the hype and BS surrounding him, I had doubts….

These Minnesota Vikings are really good people, Kenny. Childress deserves a great deal of credit for getting rid of the players with serious issues (the sort that create ‘Love Boat’ incidents and hit meter maids with their car) and creating a new team atmosphere of decent players that children can look up to as role models without parents cringing. I’m honestly proud of this Viking squad, and the last thing I wanted to have happen was for a cancer to be brought in to turn it all to rot.

That didn’t happen. Favre’s looking very much like the real deal, not just a QB who can drop back to pass without making my stomach do flip-flops of panic (which has been the norm over the past couple years with Jackson at the helm), but a guy we can like and respect, and who’s making an amazing impact for the team. He doesn’t making things about himself, he goes out of his way to spread the wealth and ensure that EVERYONE on the team is participating in a victory. None of us would have predicted that Tahi would gain 8 whole yards on a single play, lolol! But Brett Favre made it happen, and I bet it made Tahi stand 6" taller that day.

Playing up to hopes, exceeding expectations

Brett Favre has resurrected his career and his reputation, proving the nay-sayers totally wrong. I was in the “Brett Favre was strongly in the AFC MVP conversation before the injury” camp, so I can say that I’m excited, but not surprised that Brett has made such a positive impact on the team as a whole. The confidence he brings to the QB position, the poise he has in the pocket, the vision he has downfield is astounding and so welcom after watching happyfeet Jackson with his wide eyed look into the defensive backfield. To Tarvaris’s credit, he’s not a bad QB, but due to his complexion (being a pretty dark black guy) it may have accentuated the look of terror in his eyes, as it was often the main distinguishing feature on his face when he had his helmet on… Not trying to ba racial there, just making an observation that could better explain why he looks so scared under center… Anyway, If we continue to keep Brett as clean as we have against Green Bay, and it looks like the O-Line is starting to really clique, and we take Brett out when the game is in the bag (I’d say up 3 TD’s in the second half, but yeah…) Keeping him healthy and his arm and legs as well rested as possible will go a long way to keeping him healthy well into January (Dare I say February????)

Wide-eyed panic

I dunno… I saw the same look in Booty’s eyes too, and both were accentuated by the eye-black they wear, lol.

What really bothers me is what I get out of seeing that look in ‘my QB’… panic is one of the most communicable social responses we have, and if I felt it just by seeing a glance into Jackson and Booty’s helmets, then I know the Viking receivers were picking it up too. You can’t get comfortable around that. And it must have been emboldening to the opposition… We just can’t afford that.

Think is a team thing

Obviously both are invaluable….but there are so many other standouts, some unheralded like Hutch….

That is what makes this team what it is…team effort….whether we speak of AD, Favre, Harvin, Hutch, JA, Rice, Berrian, Taylor (yes Taylor too)…..

The sum equals more than the many invaluable “pieces” above…and this sum is what will carry this team to the SB…and win it….

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

Good Point!

AD is just as valuable as anybody too. If you guys didn’t have a kick ass running game, then Favre would have a much harder time. Teams HAVE to put 8 in the box when AD is on the field…

this is all good what your talking, but!

Did anybody notice Kevin Williams in the game I think he had as good a game as JA if not better. Please don’t forget to mention him. And for that fact Pat Williams was awesome too.

Uber-Effort!

When Rodgers tried to scamper with the ball, it was Williams who ran his ass down from behind and kept him from getting the 1st down. THAT was impressive.

Hats off to the entire D-line

Edwards was killing the pack early on when they were chipping JA. Pat and Kevin were also chasing people from side line to side line. I’m loving the effort our entire team is showing right now. Keep it up Vikes.

Skol Vikings Go.

Different sides of the ball, not really comparable.

I think the D would struggle much more w/out Allen, and the same goes for Favre and the offense. I would say both are equally important, but I’m giving Favre the edge, because he has a tougher job. :)

How about that Loadholt

running back to try to catch that PIT turnover TD. That was pretty far and fast for a 340 lb man.
