Team MVP

Coming into the bye week we are looking really good. After eight games I think it would be safe to start the discussion for team mvp.

Adrian Peterson, Brett Favre, Percy Harvin, Jared Allen and Antoine Winfield.

All legit candidates, however....I also nominate Ted Thomson for your Minnesota Vikings MVP.

Peterson - has been his usual self although a few sluggish games have slowed him down

Favre - has blown all the critics out of the water

Harvin - Steal of the Draft, there is no doubt about that one

Allen - Sack/FF/Deflection master

Winfield - sets the tone for our defense, dont believe me? see the second half defense for the last two games

I think there are 2 ties in the top 5:

1a. Favre
1b. AD
2. Allen
3a. Sydney Rice
3b. Percy Harvin

Kevin Williams

has been an absolute beast this year
5 sacks and a forced fumble with 15 tackles
he somehow has gone relatively unmentioned

From the only TRUE North division

How many passes has he deflected?

Too many to count apparently.

Plus

he knocked down more passes than any Vikings d-back in this game.

Ted Thompson is not the MVP

It will be interesting to see if Thompson can build a SB team in the next 3-5 years or less with Rodgers under center. Should that occur, all bashing will seem foolish afterward. Besides, the Jets deserve more credit for releasing him this year after giving up their 1st round pick for 1 year of Favre.

by KC Viking on Nov 1, 2009 9:49 PM CST reply actions

There was no 1st rounder exchanged

It was a conditional pick and I believe it ended up being a 3rd rounder.

I can’t wait to see the TT Superbowl team.

OK, a conditional pick

but it was a 1st rounder that turned into a 3rd rounder. I guess that worked out OK for the Jets and not so well for the Packers.

On the flip side, Tony Gonzalez was traded for something like a 4th or 5th round pick…and nobody wanted to give up more than that for a HoF TE. That proves to me that the NFL is full of unimaginitive copycats.

Favre and Longwell

The Vikings should thank Thompson for Favre and Longwell. Having those two makes a big difference for the Vikings.

As much as Ted Thompson has helped the Vikings, however, he has hurt the Packers more. Imagine if he had kept the team he inherited intact and just added to it. Favre would already have another Super Bowl or two as a Packer.

Nah.

The defense would still disappoint somehow, and the offense would still lack a real running game. TT has plenty of work to do.

It's definitely Favre, the Vikes are beating teams thru the air.

Harvin is a damn close 2nd though. Those nice KR’s make Favres job a little easier. :)

Allen is definitely D-MVP of the Vikings, if not the entire NFC.

by chaosg on Nov 1, 2009 9:57 PM CST reply actions

I’d put Sharper ahead of Allen for NFC D-MVP. One more int TD and the man ties Rod Woodson. I mean he already has. . . 3? 4 on the season? I love that Allen’s on pace to hit 21 sacks this season though. If only we could play the Packers more than twice a season lol.

Now THAT’S entertainment :)

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!

Sharper's a good pick too, he's having a hell of a year.

but I still favor Allen. I don’t think the Vikes D would be near as successful as they are w/out Allen. His constant pressure on every down can’t be ignored. …plus he’s a Viking..lol

If you want to take Sharper out of the game, all you have to do is throw to the other side of the field….(mostly sarcasm) :)

everyone always said

“man the Vikings would be so good if they just had a decent QB’. Now we have a hall of famer and are the talk of the league (besides New Orleans). So the MVP has got to be Favre. I have a feeling that we are not 7-1 with T-Jack or Sage as our QB.

Onthe other hand Harvin is such a game changer of kickoffs and it seems like he is always there on 3rd and long to make the catch.

Plus harvin has no fear to go over the middle. that is huge

Winfield

We’re hurting deep without him.

Allen has only had big games vs the Pack(would be 5th in the league in sacks just from those 2 games). Peterson has yet to have consecutive big games. Rice and Shank are just coming into their own. Percy is getting better. Brett is Brett with these weapons around him. I might have gone with the trenches, but picking 9 people as team MVP isn’t very fair.

Go Nevada Wolf Pack!

by BacksThePack on Nov 2, 2009 9:53 AM CST reply actions

Hurting deep?

Winfield doesn’t play deep routes very often. We play a Tampa-2 which is essentially a cover 2 meaning the CB’s are responsible for the flats most of the time. Our CB’s don’t man up very often, and the loss of Winfield hasn’t hurt our deep pass defense very much.

What it has done, is caused a lot of short passes to become long passes because Paymah simply cannot tackle.

There were two TD’s that can be blamed on Paymah. The second one to Havner, Paymah was off covering the deep WR when he should have been down in the flat covering the area that Havner was.

Then there was the pass to Jennings, where Paymah first held Jennings, and then interfered with Jennings and STILL could not prevent him from catching the ball.

We need to get him off the field.

How can someone be a good tackler on special teams, but can’t even hold on long enough to get help playing in the secondary?

Paymah needs to go to tackling 101. He tackles like he’s afraid of getting burned, which he still winds up doing because he doesn’t make a decision. He waffles on when to try to engage the runner and how to hit him.

by midnightwonder on Nov 2, 2009 12:15 PM CST up reply actions

To be fair, his value on special teams was as an outside gunner. He is able to get downfield and direct the returner to the middle of the field. He was never signed for his tackling ability.

by Bjorno on Nov 2, 2009 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

We are in a unique situation where our MVP will typically get chosen by the opposing teams D. We have so many wheapons. You try to stop the run, Favre burns you. You look to stop Favre, and you have the best back in the league that’s going to posterize your ass. Pick your poison.

by dsludo on Nov 2, 2009 12:53 PM CST reply actions

Percy will prevail...

MVP, maybe not but I still like his chances for league Offensive Rookie of the Year if Knowshon Moreno continues to get shut down like he did last week against the Ravens.
Denvers got a tough second half to their schedule and Knowshon has been plagued by minor injuries all season. Besides, if you add Harven’s past and future KR stats to the mix, he should win hands down. This is a dangerous man.

4 + 28 = XLIV

I'll say it first...

…that’s HARVIN, with an I… brain fart

I sat here like 20 seconds trying to figure out where the “L” (el) goes in “Percy Harvin” ;)
