Winfield Officially Ruled Out for Sunday

Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network is reporting that CB Antoine Winfield will not play this weekend when the Vikings take on the Detroit Lions at the Metrodome.

Winfield suffered a foot injury back in Week 6 against the Baltimore Ravens, and is hoping to return for Minnesota's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11.

Good move by the Vikings to keep #26 on the bench for this week, I think.  The extra week off will have given Winfield a full month to rest up, and it's obviously much better for him to be completely healthy than to risk a potential aggravation of the injury at a later date by rushing him back.

Hopefully, it will turn out that we didn't need him this weekend after all.

And a quick programming reminder. . .tonight marks the first Thursday night football game of the 2009 season, and it's something of a concern to us, as it features the Chicago Bears and the San Francisco 49ers.  The game is being shown on the NFL Network, and if you don't have that on your cable package, you can follow along with the game on NFL.com as well.

Good move

If they can go 2-1 without him, they should be able to beat Detroit without his services. Get him 100% for the stretch run.

BTW…on the NFL game their is no announcer voices, just crowd noise. It’s AWESOME!!!

I’m ok with this and prefer it. Why risk aggravating it against the Lions?

oh and did i mention

that was his 5th interception? wow

Cutler had more interceptions in the second half of this game than Brett Favre has had in half a season!

Actually, it ties the number Favre has, but the point is still there. I can’t wait until we play them, if only to see how many Bears fans come over here to eat their crow. How’s Pace doing? Yeah, he’s not the pro-bowl LT like you thought? How’s Cutler? Yep, he’s a gunslinger. And Marinelli? What? Oh, he hasn’t really effected that D-Line very much?

Seriously. Cannot wait.

That was so Epic!..

We just clinched the division folks.

Well if I did it right...

Using the MLB magic number formula, Games left 8 + 1 – games ahead of closest rival 3 = Magic Number is 6. Any combination of Viking wins and Packer losses adding up to 6 means the Vikings have officially clinched.

And that is why Cutler < Favre.

It’s been safe to say that for a while. This is just the straw on the camel’s back against the truth.

But… but… but, everybody said he was 3rd best before the season. Actually, most Slackers fans, at least the ones that linger at Acme still think Arodge is better.

Oh, really, Lovie?

He said, and I quote, “sure we can still make the playoffs. We only have 5 losses, there’s a lot of football left.”

Interesting. I guess he hasn’t been hanging around here this past week. :)

by fischean on Nov 12, 2009 10:39 PM CST reply actions

Well, technically, he’s right. They could turn it around and still go 11-5. But it’s highly, highly unlikely. Just too many holes on that team. The best part? They don’t have a single first day draft pick this upcoming draft. They’re going to have to be extremely active players in FA to try and patch up this team.

FOX must not be happy

about the Bears losing tonight. They just moved the game and the Bears keep going further into the tank.

Fox probably doesn't care

The Viking’s bandwagon is getting pretty full and putting the Vikes in primetime (even against the Bears) is good for Fox.
Plus, it’ll be the week the Vikes clinch the division!

Lovie's full of it

Have you seen Da Bears schedule. They got Philly next week & they play us twice plus the Ravens. They will end up 6-10 maybe 7-9. Cutler has an arm but he forces to many plays.

by iowaron on Nov 13, 2009 12:48 AM CST reply actions

What if?

The Packers beat the Cowboys? I know you guys are wanting to clinch by week 12. And I give you that you will probably have the division all wrapped up by some point. But if the Packers do get a win, then that might throw a wrench in your early celebrations. The Bears are bombing and the Packers are struggling, but the Packers could spoil a few teams. Who knows? I know it’s a big maybe. Yet the Dallas game might be closer than some predict. Or am I wishing for too much?

On a side note: I am not so confident in my fantasy QB (Aaron Rodgers) so I sat him. Instead, I started Brett Favre against the Lions. I wonder if this was a good move. I also have Adrian Peterson. It might be a case where one excels and the other does not. I am hoping that Favre gets a few TDs and then Peterson plays mop up and scores a couple times.

No matter what, we can agree that it is good to see the Bears lose.

I hope the Packers do win

Partly so our friends over at ACME don’t all start jumping off of bridges and the other because I think at teh end of the year the Cowboys might be the team vying with us for second seed, while I highly doubt the Pack will be an issue at all by the end of the season.

by Grime on Nov 13, 2009 7:57 AM CST up reply actions

except that

peterson doesn’t play mop up. assuming the vikes jump all over the lions (which they should), i wouldn’t be surprised to see both favre and peterson sit most/all of the fourth quarter. of course, they might put up a game’s worth of numbers in the first half or three quarters…

by tebe_1 on Nov 13, 2009 8:39 AM CST up reply actions

I dunno. I really don’t think the Cowboys will have a terrible time dealing with the Packers. I mean, your O-Line is just terrible. We could see Demarcus Ware have another huge game, like he did last year against the Giants when he had 5 sacks. I think they’ll be a bit too much for the Packers to handle, on both sides of the ball.

by Frost on Nov 13, 2009 8:46 AM CST up reply actions

I'm glad we have the luxury

…of being able to rest Antoine. If the division were closer they’d have him playing this week. Now he can get get back to 100%.

by Belarus on Nov 13, 2009 7:13 AM CST reply actions

Rest up...

Glad to hear he is going to be resting up. It gives others a chance to step up and see how well they can perform. I’d rather see him get 100% vs. re-injure himself.

As for the Packers/Cowboys – game. I would actually be happier to see them win. Any loss to a division leader other than the north is fine by me. Even if it has to be the Packers from our division. Nothing like creating a little breathing room. I know it maybe what pushes us clynching the division maybe a week or two later, but I would be fine with that. — I’m more focused on our team seeing a 1st round bye in the playoffs. That bye week can be great for resting up, healing injuries, etc. etc.

by Deek on Nov 13, 2009 9:28 AM CST reply actions

That's exactly right

The Packers would do us a favor in the homefield playoff race by beating the Cowboys.

From ESPN's Bill Simmons today:

Cowboys (-3) over PACKERS
Green Bay’s record since Nov. 2, 2008: 6-11. The six wins? Chicago (twice); Detroit (twice); St. Louis; Cleveland. They aren’t good. Sorry. It’s true. Look at the bright side, Packers fans — at least Brett Favre’s inevitable injury is coming up soon. You can smell it in the air. It’s like logs burning in the fireplace.

Hmmmm

Well with the Packers being a current 500 team, they aren’t giving us Vikings fans much to brag about with credibility of beating teams. Hey! If they can beat the Cowboys, they’ll actually give us a little bit to be happy about. We don’t play them again this year unless by some miracle they get a wildcard, so as as long as we keep winning, they can keep winning as well for all I care. Seems at some point during the year, some teams give up almost as if they would rather have a better draft pick.
I know that we most definately can’t overlook the bears. But I don’t imagine us winning our last 8 games easily if at all. — We can only take it week by week hoping we win that coming game just like the players take it week by week. I think the way the Vikings come out of this Bye week will really tell us what we can expect from them this 2nd 1/2 of the season.

by Deek on Nov 13, 2009 1:00 PM CST reply actions

Politely dissagree

Man for man, we are better than the Bears. The only team I am worried about is the Bengals but we have them at home.
