Oh boy, Tarkenton going on a rant Part Duex.

You know, I used to love the guy because of what he meant to this team. But I am beginning to wonder who is more annoying as they get older, him or Al Davis? While I do see his point on this one, I still get a little tweaked when he lambastes the Vikings or other teams about something yet is a non figure even after all these years. At least we still hear from the old Vikes from ages past. Even Unitas was an integral face of the Ravens sideline when they came into existence. But Fran, this is getting old. If you want to spout off, at least show your face to the Vikings games or realize this isn't the 60's and 70's anymore. Tho this rant of his really has nothing to do with us on the whole, I am really getting tired of this. But in his defense, you have to consider the source, Yahoo which is as bad as ESPN in twisting things. Here you go.

Fran Tarkenton doesn't like these newfangled quarterbacks!

Former New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton has once again spoken up on the new generation. The 69-year-old Hall-of-Famer, who at one point held just about every major career passing record and played in three Super Bowls, has a successful life after football as a sometime TV personality and full-time entrepreneur. But that doesn't keep him from opining on the current group of signal-callers who draw his ire for various reasons.

First, there were his May, 2009 comments on 790 the Zone in Atlanta about serial retiree Brett Favre(notes). When asked about Favre's continued dalliances with the NFL, Tarkenton was more than succinct.

"I think it's despicable. What he put the Packers through last year was not good. Here's an organization that was loyal to him for 17, 18 years, provided stability of organization, provided players. It just wasn't about Brett Favre. In this day and time, we have glorified the Brett Favres of the world so much, they think it's about them ... I kind of hope (Favre's unretirement) happens, so he can fail."

Well, bah, humbug! Of course, Favre put us all through a few months of media torture in his current comeback to the Vikings, but he's certainly isn't failing. As he acclimates to Minnesota's offense, he's lighting it up at an age when most quarterbacks only wish they could. Having swung and missed on Favre, Tarkenton has now taken aim on another NFC Norris quarterback -- one Jay Cutler(notes), fresh from his five-pick disaster against the 49ers last Thursday. Back on the radio went Fran, and back went the mouth into overdrive, on Chicago's "Waddle and Silvy Show" (no, really):

"I really question whether he can play. Quarterbacks need to make their team better. If it's a bad team, they can even make a bad team better. Somebody may say well, even Peyton Manning(notes)couldn't help the Bears. Yes, he could. Tom Brady(notes) could, too. They might not win the championship or get to the playoffs, but they would make that team better. Those wide receivers who are struggling would be better because they would make them better."

Tarkenton then went on to say that the best way for Cutler to prove him wrong was to march into offensive coordinator Ron Turner's office and "tell that coach [expletive]." Tarkenton related a story in which he told the young Dan Fouts to tell his offensive coordinator to kiss off. Of course, one of the guys responsible for Fouts' development was Bill Walsh, San Diego's offensive coordinator in 1976, and I sincerely question the professional future of any quarterback dumb enough to pop off to Walsh.

If he can take it as he dishes it out, I think the best advice for Tarkenton could be taken from that noted philosopher, Sgt. Hulka: "Lighten up, Francis." The pressure on these guys is bad enough, even when it's self-imposed, without former greats copping headlines with their "Grumpy Old Men" routines at the worst possible time. Telling guys like Favre and Cutler to "get off my lawn!" just stings Tarkenton's own legacy, and that's a shame.

Here here...

“Peanut Envy” is what I call it…..

Second x explanation (did once in another post)….

An affliction similar to penus envy as depicted by Freud and comments normally associated with the people in the stands, or the “peanut gallery” as I used to call it in the Army….

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

Soooo...
“I really question whether he can play. Quarterbacks need to make their team better. If it’s a bad team, they can even make a bad team better.”

He’s saying the Vikings are a bad team? Or Favre’s not making the Vikings better, maybe? Still, this isn’t as bad as his comments last May.

Tarkenton was a great QB in his day, but he needs to watch what he says.

He is rapidly losing my respect

if he can’t say anything decent about the Vikes or Favre, he needs to just shut up

Tarkenton Was Spot On

Tark doesn’t suffer fools or pussies gladly, and he calls it as he sees it. Yeah, I’m an old guy who remembers that Tark used to speak with his arm, not with his mouth, and all the records he held when he retired did his speaking for him.

I don’t see what all the whiney bitching is about this time. If a QB is good, he’ll make a bad team into a better team. Anyone seriously want to argue with that?

As for too much pressure on young QBs, give it a rest already. If those guys can’t handle the pressure, maybe they’d be better off quitting the NFL, taking off the big-boy pants and go back to hiding behind their mommy’s high-heeled boots. You coddle a pansy, you’re not going to turn it into a man.

+1

if you grew up watching football in the 60’s or 70’s (70’s for me) then you can understand where guys like him are coming from.

you didn’t not play unless you physically couldn’t play. if you could walk, you played. and you did it for 50 thousand not 50 million.

there are very few players like that in the league anymore. i think most of them are playing for the vikings this year.

It was a different era indeed...

I remember watching Billy Kilmer when he was QB for the Redskins, playing with broken ribs, once with a broken ankle, and never a complaint. Man, that was guts-ball, you had to respect the guys who carried on for their teams despite the pain. They had a powerful loyalty not just to the franchise, but most importantly, to their teammates.

I can’t believe the media is giving Fran all this attention. I sure wish he would retire quietly! Go Brett!!!!!

to all those bashing fran

he’s earned the right to his opinion any time he wants to give it. as have all the vikes from his era. and i’m pretty sure most guys who played in his time agree. the nfl today is pretty pansy compared to when they played.

if you actually read the article, he was talking about cutler in the second quote. the first quote was from preseason and if i remember right, a lot of us here agreed with it at the time.

Favrephilia Fever!

It’s pretty rampant with an 8-1 record. I like Favre a lot more now that I’ve had a chance to watch the guy play for the Vikes, I think he’s a great QB and a great leader. Hopefully we’ll do good things with him at the helm.

But that doesn’t blind my ability to reason, pay attention to other things, or give me a tingle down my leg.

(Disclaimer: The Woman says no one but her gets to cause the tingles, lol)
