#1 Reason the Vikes Need a New Stadium

On what would have been the sure highlight of the day, our beloved AP had the rock punched out from behind because he could not see what was on his trail. Consider this, in a complex such as UoPhoenixStadium, etc., where  jumbo screens are in sight of the players, he surely would have been able to peek up at and get a sense of what was sneaking up from behind. I know #28 was far enough ahead of the pack (lol) where he would have been able to see Pat Buchanon racing to catch him. Although it did not effect the game much, the fumble hurt in the worst ways. Just another comment in the box.

Reason # 1

So the Vikings don’t move to LA.

Reason #2....post above!

Agree above is #1 though…..

LA Vikings???? Puleeezzze…..

We already experienced this once (LA Lakers?)….

Hope folks wake up and smell the coffee (reality)….

Money talks….put up or shut up as Vikings move to greener pastures….

Here here to a new stadium….I will contribute, no issue…..

Has been discussed ad nauseum, I know, I know….but until we get action, we need to keep pushing……

SKOL!

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

Exactly

Any benefits like the one in the fanpost applies to the other team as well. Adrian just needs to do a better job keeping the ball tucked. Although it’s good when it happens in games against bad teams; it serves as a reminder to the player going forward. Hopefully Adrian won’t make that mistake in the playoffs.

A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.

Reason #2

Vikings football in the rain, mud & snow. Outdoors, like it should be.

Jumbo screens are about #20 or so.

Indoors

I understand that nobody may want to pay for a dome, but having a dome in MN makes perfect sense. In a small market, it’s important to draw as many fans to the game as possible, and many will not go to the mid-season and later games (especially in ho-hum seasons). With that goes a lot of merch since many of those fans are women.

And speaking of women, what about the cheerleaders? Outdoors in MN in December, there could only be a few women in snowsuits and Michelin Man-style jackets with pom-poms. The thought that hot athletic women are excited about the Vikings is exciting, but seeing it for myself every week is gratifying. I, for one, hope that they do not make that move.

Exactly. Not to mention a retractable roof is necessary to hosting a Superbowl at some point.

Do we really NEED to host a Super Bowl?

And was the Met empty during the 70’s? Packer’s fans still go to Lambeau in December. Is it warmer in Green Bay?

4 Super Bowl seasons outside
0 Super Bowl seasons inside

Yes.

Minneapolis should get the revenue from hosting a SB in exchange for the public funding that the Vikings will surely require.

So much has changed since the 70s. The cost of an NFL ticket has gone up exponentially beyond inflation (formerly much less than a month’s rent on a decent apartment, now considerably more than that). That means that almost anyone could afford season tickets then, and relatively few can afford them any/every year. It’s cheaper to buy NFL Sunday Ticket, maybe even upgrade the TV, too.

People go to Lambeau because: 1) it’s the only publicly owned team, therefore why not support that which is yours; 2) they’re insane in the frozen membrane; 3) so much beer, so few brain cells; 4) seriously, what else is there to do there?; 5-100) [I really could go on, but I don’t mean to be a hater. I’m just trying to answer your question].

Whether a team is SB good or not has nothing to do with whether it is outdoors or indoors. It’s cold in Cleveland, but they’ve never been to a Super Bowl unless you count the 1 year the Ravens won it. How do you explain why the Giants have had so many more SB seasons than the Jets while sharing the same outdoor facilty? Where are all of Chicago’s SB seasons? They have 2 in their history, all outdoors. Yes, the Vikes had 2x as many while outdoors, but it took the Packers about twice as long to go to their 4th also. Buffalo has 4 SB teams, too, and the only thing that these 3 teams have in common is that BUF was really good once, and so were the Vikings. The Packers had a franchise QB and some great players around him at 2 different times in their history. The Bears had the best D twice, a formula that has only worked for the Ravens once. The Colts could still win a few SBs with Peyton.

1992

>The one and ONLY Super Bowl in the Dome’s 27 year history.
>Good luck getting non-Viking fans to pay for your retractable roof.
>Viking fans drink as much beer as Packer fans.
>If you build an outdoor stadium, they will come.
>I’m sure the LA Vikings would play outside anyway.

skywalks

Why so many downtown skywalks?

Answer: People with money have options, and they tend to choose indoors. That’s just how it is.

The roof doesn’t need to be retractable. Just a normal dome would do. The operating costs of an inflatable dome must be sky-high (no pun intended), so I hope nobody proposes something like that again.

by KC Viking on Nov 16, 2009 4:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Skywalks?

So unless a new stadium is connected by skywalks, nobody will show up? Last time I checked, there aren’t any skywalks to the Dome. Plus I’m sure any new stadium would have luxury boxes for the rich people you’re worried about.

We already have a domed stadium. Again, try selling another domed stadium to non-Viking fan taxpayers and politicians. It’s either going to be open (cheaper) or retractable (much more expensive) and Zygi will have to pay a bigger chunk.

The skywalks were an example of Minnesotans choosing indoors over outdoors to spend their money, and the team definitely wants to attract many of those skywalk shoppers.

There is really no point in going for a retractable roof unless the stadium will have dual use in the offseason (MLS, etc.), but a roof is essential.

Plus

You sound like you’ve at least been to MN, but you forget who we in the upper midwest are. Ever hear of ice fishing? Deer hunting? Cross-country skiing? Snowmobiling? Ever hear of the 1967 “Ice Bowl?” 50,00+ people attended a game in -13℉ on New Year’s Eve at Lambeau.

People don’t go to games because the team sucks, not because it’s outside. I’m too lazy to do the research, but I’m sure we’ve had more blackouts in the Dome than the Met did.

Ask the Gophers how they like their new stadium! Ask the Twins about their new roof!

Also

The Rams went to more SBs (2) while playing their home games in a dome.
The only time the Falcons went to a SB, their home field was a dome.
The Colts won a SB while playing their home games in a dome.
The only time the Cardinals (the oldest franchise in NFL history) went to a SB, they played their home games in a dome.

Assuming that there had ever been a curse of domed football teams, it has already been broken a few times.

Is it just me

The jerseys looked darker in the past is that right? Can I get a witness?

by iowaron on Nov 16, 2009 2:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes they have changed colors....

The purple is more bluish now….guess this is a “modern” purple? Also a LOT more dirt, mud and footprints on the old uniforms week in and week out seems to me…..outdoor effect, snow, rain, real grass, etc….maybe more open air stadiums back then, plus latter year games dirtier w inclement weather?

This factor (weather) used to be a factor that warmer-cliimate based teams had to plan for with away games at MN, as in Lambeau (sp?) now and still….Bud toughened our guys up for it….other teams did not have that luxury…not sure if hurt us or them more, but suspect them…

I used to go out and play neighborhood hockey during half times near the end of year games….Depending on the year, Rainy Lake at times froze over prior to snow falling, what a BIG skating rink! Oooof, nowadays probably would use the opp to have another cold one (when in Germany anyway) LOL…Gives you an idea though what the team must have been going through….

Understand though why today in these times the open air stadium is probably the least desirable option, based on need to generate monies from activities, etc….Have to cover the huge costs in an NFL team, plus draw in the events such as SB….Maybe if we all go out and buy another jersey will help? Doubt this will do it, but a start I guess….and keep writing pols too…

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

If I recall correctly, the stadium had no sideline heaters at all, Grant wouldn’t allow them. Vikings kept warm by playing hard. Other teams had to bring their own, or stand in the cold with the Norsemen.

Teams like the Dolphins and Rams were never, ever, happy about playing the Vikings in December…

Darker

and more of a flat cloth look than the shiny polyester.

Whatever the jersey material or color, can it really be so difficult to match the helmet color? I’ve been baffled by that for years. I think the Bengals are the closest that way.

The fumble was on Adrian. Period.

Stop making excuses for him. Im not to bitter because we still ended up winning by 17, but the fumble was APs fault not the metrodome’s. When he felt Buchanon’s hand on his back he should have grasped the ball with both hands. I think he wanted to score a bit too much on that play.

by Jayrome007 on Nov 16, 2009 5:48 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

How do you want to score "to much"?

Just curious but isn’t that what you want him to be thinking and doing?

by lifelongvike on Nov 17, 2009 6:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

No, not always

Check out Maurice Jones-Drew’s kneel down play for confirmation that scoring isn’t the only thing players should be concerned about. I would put ball security and time management above scoring in terms of priority. Granted, you need to score eventually but if Peterson was tackled at the 10 we still would have scored eventually.

by Jayrome007 on Nov 17, 2009 9:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it was AP's fault

He thought he was in the clear and let the ball hang out while he ran all out. I don’t think he expected anyone to run him down from behind…. mistake, and one that hopefully he learned from. No one ever said that he was the fastest man in the NFL.

Make an impact on getting the Vikings a stadium deal!

Hey STV.org supporters! Things are looking good on the field with the Vikings going 8-1 after the bye week! I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on what is happening off the field with the Stadium issue.

The biggest news to report is that your efforts are working! Just last week, Margaret Kelliher, gubernatorial candidate proposed what she calls a "Purple Ribbon" panel be formed to discuss the stadium issue regarding the Minnesota Vikings.

Kelliher’s spokesman was quoted by the Star Tribune: “More and more Minnesotans are asking about the stadium situation,” said Andrew Wittenborg, a spokesman for the House Speaker, a DFLer from Minneapolis. “We really need a public place to talk about what happens next.”

Let’s keep up the emails to our Representatives, Senators and Governor which will show the public and fans desire to keep the Vikings in Minnesota by building a new stadium! Information on finding your State leaders contact info and a letter to send at www.savethevikes.org/huddle-up/ Takes about 5 clicks and less than 5 minutes to make a positive impact and it DOESN’T cost you a cent!

Posted now on http://www.savethevikes.org/2009/11/14/the-vikings-fan-stadium-defensive-and-offensive-playbook/ are 10 things you can do to help convince the opposition and 10 things you can do to be proactive in helping the Vikings get a stadium deal in place. Please check it out and put into practice!

That’s it for now, please continue to post links on your Facebook and Twitter feeds and share with all of your new friends and followers!

Thanks for your continued support, BIG news coming later this week to watch out for!
