Brad Childress just got Richer!

It's finally happened. After much speculation about when they would sign him to an extension it happened this afternoon.

According to Kevin Seifert (NFC North Blogger at ESPN)

The Minnesota Vikings reached a contract extension with Brad Childress that will keep the coach with the team through the 2013 season, a source told ESPN.com Thursday

Financial terms weren't immediately available but it is believed to be between $4 million and $5 million a year, the source said. In 2006, Childress signed a five-year, $10 million contract, which was scheduled to expire after the 2010 season.

The Vikings are off to an 8-1 start with Brett Favre at quarterback. His record in Minnesota is 32-2. The Vikings made the playoffs last year and are trying to get the top seed in the NFC.

Both sides have been working on a deal for the past several months. The agreement came together Thursday morning.

As a team, the Vikings are loaded. They have 22 players on their roster who are in the top five in fan voting for the Pro Bowl

Star-divide

I can live with Chilly for a couple more years. He's been a great coach here.

This contract extension is about three months too early.

We have to ask the question: Does Brad Childress make this a better team?

IMHO… he does not. The talent he has put on the field is what is winning games, not his coaching or game time decisions.

And his record in Minnesota is 32-25. Hardly the type of record that would garner a contract extension with the talent we have.

Realistically, his record would be more like 43-14 if he had done what any smart coach would do and sign a quarterback worth his mettle. I mean, it took him three years to figure out what we all knew, that we could not win with Tjack. At least not this early in his development.

The fact that he put our team in the hands of a guy who even he said was a 3-4 year project in his first year tells me that he doesn’t have the decision making skills required to run a team.

I give him credit for helping build this team, but it is easy to stack a team when the owner is willing to spend the money.

The talent he has put on the field is what is winning games, not his coaching or game time decisions.

Well IMHO, the talent he and the front office have put on the field is more important than his game time decisions. Coaches don’t win games, players do. However, coaches can lose games with their decisions (like Belichick did last week). Childress has dramatically improved his game coaching skills, and has shown that he understands how to stay out of the way and let his players win games. The Vikings are now 17 – 4 over their last 21 regular season games. The talent he has helped put on the field is directly responsible for this success.

I think more energy needs to be devoted to supporting the Wilfs and Childress. Getting behind a new stadium and keeping the Vikings in Minnesota should be our primary concern right now.

Take away the great players, and what do you have?

Take away Adrian Peterson, Chester Taylor, Brett Favre, Steve Hutchinson, Phil Loadholt, Bernard Berrian, Percy Harvin, Sidney Rice, Visanthe Shiancoe, Jeff Dugan, Naufahu Tahi, Ryan Longwell, Jared Allen, Ray Edwards, Jimmy Kennedy, Brian Robison, Cedric Griffin, Tyrell Johnson, Madieu Williams, Ben Leber, Benny Sapp, Hussain Abdullah, Kenny Onatolu, Asher Allen, and Chad Greenway, and what do you have? You have a team that is not that good. You have a team that probably can’t even put 11 men on the field on both offense or defense. This proves that Childress is overrated. I’d like to see him win with 8 players on the field!

Chilly-backers can say what they want about Chilly. The bottom line is if you take away all of the great players, and their improving play over the years, all you have left are a few backups, some holdovers from the Tice era, and some West Coast playbooks. Need I go on?

This post has been brought to you by sarcasm.

lol

Have to say I’m not the biggest Chilly fan but you sir are correct. The team is damn good and be it because of players or coaching (well it’s because of players obviously)…

Now the big test will be when we play an actually decent team and see the chillster pull out his KOA! But then we’ll never know if it’s him or Favre…

Tongue in cheek....

Terrible job, getting that less than steller batch of “mediocre” players mentioned on board….

Or perhaps better said, getting the Vikings management/owners to work to get these washed up players signed/paid/playing terribly….

How in the heck is this team 8-1….miracle I guess….

It is hot over here in Dubai….BUTExpecting a cold front here Sunday night….

Right about kickoff time in the ’dome!

Put the failures where they belong

I don’t know that citing all the great players that the Vikings have, and giving them all credit while giving Chilly zero credit for their selection and coaching, is very fair or reasonable. The HC is part of the process in both cases, or why bother to have coaches at all?

There’s plenty of other criticisms on Chilly which are much more valid…

  • His overly conservative play-calling
  • His failure to adapt his vision and playbook to maximize the capabilities of the players
  • His failure to obtain and train a franchise-quality QB when he’s supposed to be a QB guru
  • His failure to build a solid secondary in 3 years of acquisitions
  • His failure to meld the players into a real team rather than a collection of talented individuals (it took Favre to accomplish this)
  • His beard and stewardess outfit

I’m sure there’s others that didn’t come to mind immediately, but those things, to me, are a heck of a lot more valid than saying he gets no credit for the personnel acquisitions and those guys would do great without him there.

I mostly disagree with his contract extension based on the timing. These aren’t minor considerations for an employee and employer, especially when this much money is at stake. That they’ve been going on for at least 3 months kinda irritates me. Chilly should have been putting 110% of his focus on the TEAM, and his JOB, during the season, rather than being distracted by contract negotiations. The Vikings 8-1 record is due more to the relatively easy schedule and the leadership/ability of Favre at the helm, than it is to Chilly’s head coaching. If Chilly was doing a better job, we could have been 9-0.

Only the end of the year’s result will tell whether or not Chilly really deserves this, and closing the door on other HC possibilities, this early, makes me think that something’s panicked Wilf.

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
