Talk about kicking Jay when he's down! This is a photo from outside the Metrodome yesterday. These "Little Norsemen" doing their best impression of what the Vikings did to Cutler inside the Dome just warm my heart. (Image via beargoggleson.com)

True,
I don’t believe that children should be encouraged to display such violent behavior. But, after all…It is Jay Cutler.![]()
"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
Indeed
If these were Green Bay fans and that was a Favre dummy, what would we be saying about those kids?
Way to keep it classy guys.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
Oh no, please don't arrest me classy police!
Gonzo wants us to keep the swearing down because I’m pretty we’ve been told to from the SB Nation folks. The site has a lot more visibility than it used to these days.
But this is just a picture of some kids beating up a doll. If Favre was struggling as bad as Cutler is right now and Green Bay fans were kicking Favre in effigy, I’d probably ask where I could get in line instead of worrying about how P.C. a harmless picture was.
But that’s just me—I have a sense of humor.
by Eric J. Thompson on Dec 1, 2009 10:09 AM CST up reply actions
His Dad approves of the picture...
even if his buddy Chad doesn’t! ;-)
He's struggling?
Do you think that’s the reason they’re beating on this doll, because Cutler is struggling? If he were playing well and the Bears were leading us in the division it might make sense for adult Viking fans to burn him in effigy, or whatever, to vent frustration. But your saying it makes more sense to do it to a player that’s struggling? So is it funnier when kids pick on a handicapped child than a bully, ya know because they’re struggling? That’s the kind of beating you’d get in line for?
Regardless, to incite your children to act like this in public is nothing more than a bad white trash stereotype made real. I’m not offended, nor do I lack a sense of humor, I simply think behaving like a moron, and teaching your children to behave similarly, isn’t particularly funny. Call me and elitist if you like. I won’t apologize for it.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
OK...elitist.
Your comparison of Cutler to handicapped people was both absolutely ridiculous and unintentionally hilarious depending on which way you want to take that statement.
This is a Vikings blog, not a parenting site. I posted the picture to get some laughs (which I did), not as a dissertation about the moral decay of today’s youth. Lighten up.
by Eric J. Thompson on Dec 1, 2009 2:58 PM CST up reply actions
Well let's see
Why would I bring up a handicapped person you ask? Gee, I don’t know maybe this is why.
I realize it’s easier to attack people than admit that you might have made a mistake. But you have been made one of the main writers on this site, and perhaps you could attempt to elevate your game to be worthy of that honor.
This is the kind of humor I relegate to Bears and Packers fans and would like to think we are above in Viking’s country. But I’m probably wrong. Obviously those people at the dome were having a good time acting that way and I doubt anyone spoke out about parental responsibilities at the time, why should I now? And why should anybody ever? It’s all in fun after all.
I have been outnumbered in the comments here substantially so I’ll shut up and listen for a while.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
Yes, it is all in fun.
Thanks for pointing out my other post. Since I’ve been made a co-writer, I’d like to think I’ve made it blatantly obvious that I’m just a smart ass that likes to poke fun at just about everything involving the NFL. (I don’t spare myself either.) No team or player is safe from my lowbrow humor. But what obviously may offend some people is also part of the reason why lots of people read my articles.
I knew coming in that I was never going to please everyone, because even though we’re all Viking fans (sans trolls of course), we’re all different. I can only share what I find funny.
So hopefully in the future, just know that when you read one of my posts, know that you’re almost certain to get a heaping dose of sarcasm and eye-rolling jokes. I’m just trying to get a laugh out of people, not a debate.

I think you need to relax...
This is a fan website a place to come to read about our favorite football team and to have some fun. I see this no different that other readers making comments that I disagree with. I either ignore the comments or put my two cents worth in why I disagree and then let it drop…
All good advice
If anyone’s curious how this looks to those without purple-colored-glasses here is the same image referenced on a couple of our rival’s websites:
http://www.totalpackers.com/2009/11/30/minnesota-vikings-raising-them-classy/
http://beargoggleson.com/2009/11/29/young-viking-fans-kick-jay-cutler/
You see, I like to make fun of Packer fans. The unabashed alcoholism and overall ignorant behavior gives me loads of material to work with. If this were just a comment or fanpost from a reader it could be ignored, but it was posted to the front page of what is likely the second largest Vikings blog/forum out there and gives them more ammo than I would like them to have while mocking them. These sort of things erode our moral and intellectual high ground.
Additionally do we really want Geaux Bears to have this in his pocket next time he comes trolling through? Sure his team sucks now and he won’t show his face. But IF Cutler and the Bears turn it around in a couple years we shouldn’t be surprised when this picture resurfaces as an example of the average Viking family.
I’ve worked up what I call the Favre defense. Where I claim these children are actually Packer fans whose families defected when we signed Favre and lament that I didn’t realize we’d be getting so many cheeseheads when we signed him. It’s a thin veneer, but it’s enough for now.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
I see no easy answer here
I have lived for awhile now. There have been times in my life when I would have fund the pic funny and enjoyable. At this point in my life, however, I was a bit taken aback by it. Where I am at right now, I would never let my kids do that, and I find such actions sad. Sad because they seem inconsistent with the respect that all humans, even our opponents, deserve, in my view.
But whose to say I am right and you (or me at a prior time in my life) are wrong? Plus, there is something about the game of football that glorifies hitting…..
But, my point remains. If the point of the site is to be “safe” for families to surf it — hence no curse words — then perhaps one might think twice about posting pics that others might find as objectionable as curse words. Me, I don’t care. I can just “avert my eyes,” to coin a phrase, or sigh and move on to the next post. And please don’t think that I don’t enjoy your creative posts, because I DO. I guess I am just suggesting that this one might have called for a second thought.

you guys seem to hate Cutler more than Packer fans. I really liked the stories on him here this week they were hilarious. Now, if you could hate a Bear as much as their fans do, that’d be a real accomplishment.
Yep they are hating on him now for sure....

Just what I want my grandkids to learn....yes and no...
Start ’em off early hating them Bears!? Hmmmmmmm….I picture this:
If I and the grands HAD been there, and come upon this scene ….What to say/do? Remember I am supposed to be the role model here…
Guess would caveat the humor presented (I laughed my butt off seeing this, could not help myself and would do the same with the kids there likely) with the following:
"Kids, MAYBE a bit over the top and PERHAPS bad taste, so don’t YOU go literally kicking them “in the dirt Bears” – or YOU could get hurt, OK?"
Their reply probably would be: " But OPA, YOU are laughing too!"
To which I would reply, “Yep I am…Woe is a Bears fan about now, but I stick laughing only…I never want to kick a (wo)man when (s)he is down!” wink wink…
Get my point? I ask….
To which they probably reply “Yes we know you have taught us to not disrespect women!”
End of story/scenario….
OPA has done his duty….

Kicking dummies and playing video games doesn't cause degenerates
Shoddy parenting does. Is is the failure to reinforce the distinguishing consequences of virtal people and real people that mess kids up. I love playing violent video games, yet have never raised my hand in anger at one person in my 25 years. My parents taught me that real people feel real pain, and virtual people are simply a vent.

Dave Grossman
The head of Psychology at that bastion of commie pinko leftism, otherwise known as West Point, disagrees with you. On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society is a really good book if you’re interested.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
That is a book about the THEORY
Of how/why SOLDIERS can be taught to kill when society says ’’no’’. Headshotting people in Halo 3 and CoD and free-kicking an effigy of Cutler in the cash and prizes are no where near the magnitude of your linked study in regards to the, you know, ACTUAL infliction of death and destruction as mandated by military acion. I can slaughter virtual robots or 30th century super soldiers all day, yet I promise you I’d damn near piss myself if asked to wipe out another person’s life. In fact that book more or less strenghtens my argument that good parenting and role modeling in regards to the instruction that movies and video games are fake and put no sentient creature in pain are/were extremely lacking in the Vietnam era study as linked above. IE If no reinforcement of the barrier between virtual/make believe and reality takes place, you are in for one sick puppy of a child. The kids can watch superhero movies, transformers, play 1st person shooters all they want and if no one informs them that those are just fantasies and can never be realized, then we’d have a generation of cape wearing, Michael Bay directed, SPARTAN soldier wannabe punks on our hands. It is not the media, it is the interpretation by unguided, un-sheparded minds.
Besides the point. Lets talk Vikes football.

Have you read it?
Just curious, it sounds like you may have or just read the synopsis and some reviews on Amazon.
Headshotting people in Halo 3 and CoD and free-kicking an effigy of Cutler in the cash and prizes are no where near the magnitude of your linked study in regards to the, you know, ACTUAL infliction of death and destruction as mandated by military acion.
He actually addresses both of these, well not Halo or Cutler specifically, but the use of video game simulations and the transition to human shaped targets (effigies) from traditional concentric circle targets and several other examples of dehumanizing the enemy by proxy to make soldiers more comfortable pulling the trigger. The last chapter is about how these same tactics, with an emphasis on FPS video games, is having a similar effect on society as many of their recruits are now coming in pre-conditioned. Which works out great for the military but he closes with the question of whether it’s the best thing for society.
It doesn’t have much to do with the original topic, but you brought up violent video games not being responsible for degenerates and thats what it reminded me of.
But as you say below, you wouldn’t direct your children to behave in the way we’re talking about anyway, and as long as you offer guidance on the things you’re talking about then I’m preaching to the choir. But all too often bad parenting does consist of letting children play ultra-violent video games without supervision or guidance and letting them behave badly in public without repercussions. If these parents aren’t going to teach their children any better I fail to see how it helps to post pictures of bad parenting in action and talk about how hilarious it is.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
Agree....
Sorry, I know is just us boys and girls now….and ’jes saying…I am not comfortable with the message sent to those kids by whoever allowed them to do this in the pic….Not saying anything against the picture taker….He/She was capturing the moment….
Why? In my mind is ok to have the normal banter between teams/rivals….but when it comes down to it, I wil tell you that I have seen atrocities (sp?) for no apparent reason…and the result is numbing…Whoever the parents are, allowing them to do this sends a message to the kids their action is OK…and IMO is not….
The kicking when down photo for me brings me back to scenarios that I have witnessed that are quite frankly unappetizing to put it mildly…call me a peacenik or whatever, I do not care….I love a good inter-division heated conversation as long as certain boundaries are not broken….
Good rivalry and lots of BS between rival fans is good and fun…but personally I would draw the line at the point I see young kids kicking an effigy of the opponents….this goes beyond for me what is acceptable….sorry and is only my opinion I know….
Somehow we have to get them to realize the difference between video games and reality…NFL is hard and nose to nose….but life is harder….yes I can say this from those around me and my own trail through life….

I would hope to have the opp to let the kids know the difference between my tongue-in-cheek reply prior to the above answer….
Again, I do find the photo funny at first blush….but what I alluded to in the post for the grands holds true in the first post and as clarified above….
Just more expanded version second time around….the kids know that from me, and causes them to think I hope….others may not…

But to be fair?
Would I direct my children to do that in pubilc? No. Because I would make a sound parenting decision that with so many adults following suit around him and what are asured to be several intoxicated and obnoxious people around putting forth who knows what language, the child might come to think that such behavior would be ok if that were in fact Jay Cutler in the crowd. Who knows, there might actually be some hicks in that crowd who want the REAL Cutler to be killed or hurt. God forbid my children learn from them!

Sure hope that he doesn’t see this picture, or he will probably break down crying like a baby ………… oh wait, never mind, he already did after the game in media row!
Funny pic.. and anyone who is offended by it should probably leave this blog just my suggestion. Its funny the kids did it probably didn’t think about it later on will look back at the pic in 10 years and laugh. To many uptight people here pretty sad world where you can’t make a simple joke..

and the woman I am starting to see, not official g/f status but looking positive, laughed when I sent this to her (Along with my best friend who is a Packers fan). Funny thing is, not only does she see humor in things, she’s also a nurse, but I guess she must be Kevorkian’s nurse with her seeing the humor in the pic. I just wonder how many times folks like these watched “America’s Funniest Home Videos” and laughed when the poor dad got walloped in the nads by a whiffle bat. Oh well, hypocrisy rules the world.
