How to Win On Your Bye Week

Step 1 - Watch Jeff George v2.0 and the Bears get completely undressed at home by Kurt Warner, Larry Fitzgerald and company.

Step 2 - Watch the Green Bay Packers ensure that there will be NO winless teams in the National Football League in 2009.

And. . .well, that's all you need, really.

So, if the Vikings play .500 ball the rest of the way. . .the Bears would have to go 7-1 to catch them (and, presumably, hope that that one loss isn't to the Vikings), and the Packers would have to go 8-0 in order to catch them for the NFC North division title.

I don't want to say it's over. . .but there's a rather large woman off-stage there getting her vocal chords warmed up.

And head on over to the Buc’s page and give them some congrat’s as they deserve it not only for their first win, but having it come at the expense of the Pack!

The Pack go down….down go the Pack, you know you got to love it. With the Bears losing today the Viks are on their way to another NFC north division championship.

Never would have guessed that the Bears would lose at home AND the Packers would lose against the last winless team in the NFL – Absolutely Spectacular!!!

Oh, and here's a fun little comparison

Cutler – 182/286 (64%), 2046 yards, 14 TDs, 12 INTs, 83.7 QB rating

Rodgers – 164/260 (63%), 2255 yards, 16 TDs, 5 INTs, 103.2 QB rating

Favre – 174/256 (68%), 1925 yards, 16 TDs, 3 INTs, 106.0 QB rating

Rodgers’ QB rating is enhanced a bit by the fact that he’s held onto the ball long enough to take 37 sacks in the Packers’ first eight games. Cutler has been sacked 19 times. Favre has gone down 18 times.

But, yeah. . .glad we have the best quarterback, the best offense, the best defense, the best special teams, and the best coaching in the NFC North in 2009. By far.

So much for Aaron Rodgers being the best QB in the NFL

That’s the one tag line that the Packers fans clung to all week long after the loss to the Vikings. Now they don’t even have that to reassure themselves. Rodgers is very good, and I suppose that he has a better than 50-50 chance to be great. But in close games with 3 minutes left and the Packers needing a score, he just doesn’t yet have the ability to throw the team on his back and carry them to a win. That’s an intangible that both Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco have already demonstrated, and today Josh Freeman did too. It’s not necessarily a talent that is dependent on experience, and it cannot be taught. Either you have it or you don’t. So far Aaron hasn’t shown consistently that he has it.

by Belarus on Nov 8, 2009 4:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Rodgers is a good QB, but

he’s holding on to the ball for too long, and it’s starting to cost them games. McCarthy & Company better get on that if they want any chance at a WC.

The Line is terrible, and it's good that Rodgers is patient,

but he’s given up a guesstimated 11 unnecessary sacks between the Vikings games, and this last game against the Buc’s. Rodgers is an efficient QB, but he’s gotta throw it away sometimes.

The officials are to blame for Chicago’s poor offensive showing in the first half.

There aren’t words

by TEXVIKE on Nov 8, 2009 3:56 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Of course it is

It can’t be the fact that their defense has gotten by on nothing but reputation since 2007, or the fact that their wonderful “QB of the future” is a whiny, pouty crybaby bitch, or the fact that they have no wide receivers, or the fact that Matt Forte might be the most overrated offensive player in football, or the fact that their offensive line is a joke, or the fact that their defensive line is incapable of generating pressure, or the fact that their secondary is one of the biggest jokes in the league.

Nope. . .it’s the officiating.

Possible Trifecta in the NFC North

Arizona Cardinals in an away game, beat the Chicago Bears 41 – 21

Green Bay Packers in an away game, lost to the Tampa Bay Buc’s 38-28

In a late game, in the 1st Qtr, the Detroit Lions are ahead 14 – 0, against the Seattle Seahawks.

What a weird bye week for the Minnesota Vikings!

Rookie QB Josh Freeman, in his 2nd NFL game, and his first game as the starting QB, beat the Green Bay Packers. QB Aaron Rodgers was sacked 6 times by the Buc’s.. The Buc’s ran back a blocked punt for a TD, then later ran a another punt back for another TD. Tampa Bay Buc’s were wearing their throwback uniforms, to honor the 1969 Buc’s that got the team into their first Playoff. Rookie Head Coach, Rookie Quarterback, playing the Green Bay Packer’s and their franchise QB Aaron Rogers, and the not go great Green Bay Packers, who after their first week in the 2009 season, have fallen on very hard times.

QB Aaron Rodgers now leads the NFL with 37 sacks, with 8 more games, until they get to go home and watch the playoff in their family room with the wife and children.

Keep your eyes on the prize

We need one of the top 2 seeds — want that bye week (and old fogies Favre and Williams will probably NEED it), and then the home field for second playoff weekend.

We have to keep playing full htrottle until we at least have #2 see locked up. Giants losing to Bolts tonight helped that along a little bit. And of course one of Cowgirls and BEagles will lose tonight, that will help too.

Home field throughout would be nice too, but it is a MUCH bigger leap from 3 to 2, than 2 to 1.

by puddnhead on Nov 8, 2009 7:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Giants losing to Bolts tonight helped

Actually, I thought that loss was a detriment to our playoff aspirations. We play the Giants in Week 17 and I would love nothing better than for the Giants (or ourselves) to have locked up their playoff spot already by then. That way they will be obliged to rest their starters and assure us a victory. Now they’re in fighting-for-their-lives mode and that can be very dangerous to play against.

by Jayrome007 on Nov 8, 2009 7:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

By Week 17?

Hell, at the rate everything is going, we could have our playoff spot locked up by Week 12.

Home field advantage, on the other hand, could potentially be in play in Week 17.

I guess I'm just concerned about locking up a bye week

And an AFC team beating the Giants is a step towards that. Sounds like you’re worrying about Giants having to play hard to get in playoffs. I’m just worried about taking care of first things first — knocking Giants further down the list of NFC teams that have a chance of catching us.

Besides, have you paid any attention to NFC East? The idea that Giants could have that divison championship locked up by week 16 seems pretty preposterous to me, even if they had won today.

by puddnhead on Nov 8, 2009 8:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The idea that Giants could have that divison championship locked up by week 16 seems pretty preposterous to me,

As in what happened the last game of last year when we played the Giants? Remember, we essentially won that game and stamped our playoff ticket because we were facing David Carr and the backups. How quickly we forget. It is that senario i had hoped for this year. But, as I said, it now appears unlikely.

Right now the Saints control the 1 seed we control the 2. Lets keep winning guys. Even if we had to play the Saints at their house I think we can win it. It won’t be easy but we can put pressure on the QB. I get the feeling that AP. would be a real differance maker in that game.

Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy in Trouble

Ted hitched his wagon to Dom Capers in the off season and allowed the Packers to switch over to a 3-4 defense. Now at a critical juncture in the season the Packers have had 76 points hung on them in two games. During those games they have only 1 sack and 1 INT to their credit. Ted’s foresight in handing over his defense to Dom, and his failure to add enough productive pieces during the past two off seasons could cost him his job.

Mike McCarthy was already on the ropes after a poor 2008 season and losing to the Vikings twice this year. Many GB fans are calling for his head. I can easily see them losing at least another 3 games this season. Will TT scapegoat MM to save himself? I’d watch my back if I were Mike.

by Belarus on Nov 8, 2009 4:30 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

TT scapegoats everyone and anyone if he feels like it

So does MM (he’s been outcoached all year and was never very good). They both need to go for Green Bay to have a chance in the future. They never needed to switch defenses in the first place. That is what bothered me all this time. Injuries are what hurt the Packers last year, not the defensive scheme. A huge chunk of blame goes to TT for not putting the right players in to protect Rodgers. I’m still in shock about the Tampa Bay loss. I know you guys love it. But I’m pretty bummed out. That’s football and that’s the way it goes. It’s just a game after all. The Packers had a chance to get the right players for a SB run or two with Favre, but TT ruined that.

by starmark on Nov 8, 2009 4:42 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If it's any consolation

Try to look at it this way: this season is probably lost, but you still have the quarterback, as long as he dos not get killed in the next 8 weeks. What Packers need is better personnel decisions about the nonskill positions and better coaching. AKA new GM and HC. Losses like today put them closer to getting that rock bottom over with, so things can be put back together again. A very bright silver lining on that dark cloud, IMO.

by puddnhead on Nov 8, 2009 7:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They might ax some assistant coaches after the year, but I’d be surprised if they do much else. They’ll use their usual technique of having their PR staff and coaches talk off the record how this was really a transition year to the new D and they had too many injuries.

Its worth noting that the D coordinator who beat them today, Jim Bates, was a finalist for the HC and probably would have been a better choice. Thompson left him with the impression that he had the job and then hired Jabba the Hut and talked about how they discussed things deep in their souls. Weird. McCarthy might have been a nice O coordinator.

by Salty on Nov 8, 2009 7:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I watched the game & realized that

There were a number of Packers players that were pissed Bates was not seriously considered for that job. And some fans. And yes, Bates himself. He had been dong a pretty good job with that D at the point he left.

by puddnhead on Nov 8, 2009 7:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hey starmark, why all the booing

It all comes clear in the light of day. GB should have used the Rodgers pick on an offense lineman & got behind their HOF QB. Brett may have waffled but he would be leading you guys to the playoffs right now if he had a little help. The guy takes you to 2 Superbowls & the last time I saw him play at the dome he beat us. So you boo him like you never new him?
All B.S. aside, even though I’m a Vikes fan I had respect for Packer fan and their great tradition. You should have gave him a standing O when introduced. Boo him all you want once its game on. Thats understandable. That metrodome is a piece of S#*t compared to Lambeau, but at least the fans that occupy it aren’t.

by iowaron on Nov 9, 2009 1:47 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't boo Favre

I respect everything he has done for Green Bay. Not all Packers fans are the same. Some fans (not me) think Favre betrayed them. That goes way back to the Ted Thompson feud and split when Favre was traded to NY. When Favre unretired again to play for the rival Vikings, to some fans, that was too much. Favre lost the PR battle a long time ago with the Packers organization and this was the icing on the cake. I see through all the garbage that TT and MM (and Mark Murphy) spouted. I never liked what the media had to say when they said Favre was washed up. Your team is proving them all wrong. After all, this is the same QB that took the Packers to the NFC championship game in 2007. What has Aaron Rodgers done but go 10-14 since? (Nothing against Rodgers—I like the guy) This is the same QB (Favre) that was an early MVP candidate and made the Jets into SB contenders before his injury late last season. With a healthy arm, Favre is once again a top QB in the league. Why is everyone so surprised?

Now that you guys have finally finished playing us (unless we miraculously get into the playoffs), I hope Favre gets another ring. If that means you Vikings fans get to celebrate too, then good for you. Admittedly, I would have less interest in the Vikings if #4 were not playing on the team. Yet he is there, and so I step back and watch it all. It is only a sport after all. We have real lives with real life problems to deal with. Sports is something that allows us to take our minds off of things for just a moment.

I'm not sure we should even want Lions to lose

At this point all that losing does is make them better next year (better draft position).

Frankly, I’m not sure there is any reason for a Viking fan to want to see any of the other NFC North teams lose more. Except for maybe the Bears, because we still have to play them twice and if they somehow won both those, life would get more interesting. As for the rest, the only way they catch up on the Vikings now is if the Vikings fall apart so badly that it won’t really matter anyway.

At least that is the POV for worrying only that Vikings win division. If the goal is to be sure they all do not get to the playoffs, hten yeah I guess you want to see them lose more.

It’s weird to be saying this at week 9, but if it isn’t true this week already, it would only take one more week like this for it to be.

Wow

I was out deer-hunting this weekend. I came in at 6:00 PM yesterday to find out that Notre Dame lost to Navy, and Iowa’s delusions of national title grandeur had ended at home against Northwestern.

I get in today, and discover that Green Bay lost to Tampa Bay, and the Bears got spanked by the Cardinals. Life just doesn’t get much better than this.

Did the Yankees get their World Series victory voided? No? Well, can’t have everything…

I loved the Majik Man!

I was so mad when we traded for Brett Favre. Then Don Majkowski got hurt and Favre started the next game. I guess I changed my mind somewhere along the line. Maybe it had to do with the fact that Favre turned into a SB champion and a HOF player and broke about every record there is to break. I don’t know, somewhere in there I changed my mind about the Majik Man. I still like him simply for the memories. But Favre is Favre. Majkowski was what he was until he got hurt and was never the same. Now we know who is the best QB in history. (not Majkowski…)

A little exercise

1. Compare winning percentages of Bret Favre vs. Aaron Rodgers over the last two years. Especially as it pertains to how their respective teams performed while under the previous Quarterback(s).

2. Do the same comparison between Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler. This is especially fun to compare with their respective predecessors as they are each other.

This does not mean the evidence proves Aaron and Jay are losers but… look at their college records too. Maybe they are losers.

by Odin on Nov 8, 2009 7:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Between Orton and Cutler

I think Orton win’s the battle of who is better hands down. I will admit, I actually did like the guy, he was stuck on what we see now as a mediocre team. When he was the starter of the Bears, he made that mediocre team competitive and they even had a shot at wining the division last year until we won the last game of the season. On the flip side, even with a collapse at the end of the season last year, it would appear that the Broncos were actually helping Cutler then him helping them. While on a good, not stellar, team, his stats do appear to be that of a good QB.

Now that the roles have reversed, the Bears have truely sunken to their mediocre play abilities. Cutler seems lost and bewildered and looking like the average at best QB I think he is. Orton on the other hand, has gone from a mediocre team to a good one and is playing like a Pro Bowler. His ratings and TD’s have taken a boost yet his INT’s has dropped. Definitely better receivers in Denver as well so that does help. But, at this point, seems like Orton was doing more of the propping up of a team and now seems to be enjoying himself being surrounded by a good team that he can equally contribute too, not carry.

I would venture a bet that at years end, Lovie Smith is gone along with Jerry Angelo and in about 3 years so it Cutler leaving the Bears in the basement and wishing they had their draft picks back. During this time, Denver will be one of the teams to beat in the AFC, still being led by Orton.

I kind of like Orton

but Cutler is way better. Bears are dysfunctional. Cutler can’t overcome all their problems including not much in the way of receivers.

by Salty on Nov 8, 2009 10:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair

Cutler has a better skill set and more talent than Orton, the biggest issue is just how bad the Bears really are. That offensive line, running game and receiving corps. is atrocious. If Orton was still their QB… Well, they might have actually won a couple of the closer games, but lost ones that they’ve already won. So… They’re just a really bad team overall.

by Eric The Viking on Nov 9, 2009 1:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention the fact that Denver’s offensive scheme is a good amount different than Chicago’s. It’s not going to be as easy for him as it was for Favre.

That said, we will see what kind of qb Cutler REALLY is next year when he has had a full year to adjust. We have all seen what he can do on a team with a shitty defense and great WR’s.

Though, their recievers and offensive line will need some MAJOR upgrades.

Maybe they will get fix it with their first round picks in ’09 and ’10.

Um… Oh yea… Nevemind they traded those picks for Cutler.

by Bjorno on Nov 10, 2009 4:47 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Only problem

is that Orton would be doing just as bad no matter what the O-line situation is. Yet, with more or less the same lack of talent on Chicago, he was being more consistant. So kinda hurts the arguement about Cutler having a rough first year when Orton is doing the same and he has improved himself over his years in Chicago as well as the Broncos improving. Now, on the flipside, you can say the coaching change has helped in Denver, which it has, but there has been no major overhauls of the overall scheme’s offensively. Right now, given that fact, and that Orton has the same crap receivers in Chicago and seemed to do a bit more with them, I am presently seeing Orton as being under rated and Cutler over rated. Not by physical which I see as being very good, but what is killing Cutler and I think he won’t ever get over, is his Crybaby persona and the “me” attitude and that is what makes him more over rated.

"That is the craziest sonofabitch I ever saw, how many more like him do you think are up there?"

by VikesFaninNM on Nov 10, 2009 10:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I can see that.

But Orton had a few years of work with those receivers in Chicago and Cutler has not. The Bears passing attack relies on timing, and it takes a little while to build that relationship with a receiver.

But when you have a guy like Marshall, who you can just throw the ball near him and he will come down with it. Timing be damned.

I agree with your assessment, Cutler is overrated and Orton is underrated. But I still think that Cutler is a legitimate franchise QB and if his attitude does not get the best of him, we are going to have some issues with him in the future.

I don't know if this was prompted by the Bears' loss last night

And it was well deserved.

But back to AP. It’s pretty clear he’s the best back in football. He makes your entire offense significantly better than it otherwise would be, and he ends up helping the defense too but contributing to a positive time of possession. Take AP away, and you’d still be good, but I bet you wouldn’t be 7-1. So any comment that AP is overrated is clearly the product of an emotional reaction instead of a rational one.

If you put this years Vikings offense in last years playoff game, Vikes would walk away winners…If that makes any sense? :)

IMO, This years Vikes can hang/beat any team in the NFL. If I had to chose between playing the Cowboys and the Eagles, I’d choose the Cowboys. The Eagles have a good football team, and they usually win their first playoff game.

Why Do People Question The Vikings' Status?

by UnBannedVikingholic on Nov 8, 2009 9:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The Packers and Bears are playing like

the Vikings have in recent seasons. Play well against top teams, play down to the level of your competition, and they play a quarterback that might put up great numbers but can’t make the clutch drive to tie or win a game, a la Daunte Culpepper.

Which is why the first half of the season has been so damn fun. The Vikings (usually) dominate teams they should (Cleveland, Detroit, St. Louis) handle your business in the division (Green Bay twice), and win the games you should win at home against good opponents (SF, Bal). Too often, in recent seasons, the Vikings would play like the Packers or Bears did today, and I am ecstatic to see them get over those hurdles.

And goddamnit, isn’t it nice to realize that we’re not playing for a playoff position, but home field advantage, with 8 weeks to go? It will be intersting to see how the Vikings handle a lead like this.

"We're used to Favre-a-palooza now. We're engulfed in Favre-a-palooza. It's not even Favre-a-palooza anymore. He's family now."

Our final goal has not yet been reached

Indeed the Vikings will probably win the NFC North Div.,.

But I hope that is not our final goal?

Because winning our division and selling all of the tickets, has been our only goal for the past 30 years,. That is no longer good enough.

Making it into the play-off’s is no longer good enough for this team, or us fans. At least not this Viking fan.

I want them to win during the play-off’s as well.

Then I want them to win the SB like they should have and could have those other 4 times.

And so, they must push on, and continue to improve each week, across the board, like a finally tuned engine..

There should be no complacency, no relaxing, no satisfaction, no celebrating, until after the SB..

One game at a time. We are approaching the half way mark.

Our goal isn’t selling all of the tickets for each of the following games. Our goal is to win the Super-Bowl for the first time in history. And then my friends we can celebrate all we want to.

That is our final goal, isn’t it?

by vnbushman on Nov 8, 2009 11:13 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Not at all

The reason why Wilf and Chilly went after Favre was to win it all, not just the division. We did that last year between a career back-up and one that may wind up being a career back-up. Right now, Favre is definitely giving us a shot at getting into the Super Bowl and perhaps next year. Hopefully, if he last’s 2 years and does indeed get us the ring we have been wanting for so long, we will have figured out our long term QB situation.

Hey vikesfansd

No way Favre wants any part of G.B. He would get killed behind that line. Brett needs to stay right where he is, wrapped in his nice cozy purple blankey.

by iowaron on Nov 9, 2009 1:27 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Favre was right last week when he said it turned out best for both.

I think he knows tht without Rodgers youth and speed, he would never survive there, Packers would be worse off. And of course so would he. As do I.. Packers are better off with Rodgers, even right now, forget about in 2-6 years.

The only thing that is in the way of “all’s weel that ends well” is the attitude with some Packers that Favre is still their whipping boy. You would have hoped they would have learned this in high school, that once you dump someone you lose the right to whine or criticize who they “date” next. And in fact a truly mature person even wishes their exes well in what they do next, especially if they were the ones doing the dumping. Like what was seen here with Birk for the Ravens game, there was no hostiliyt here that I saw, even though he chose to make that move, he wasn’t traded.

Maybe, someday, that segment of the Packers fans learn that high school lesson in proper conduct.

Why Do People Question The Vikings' Status?

by UnBannedVikingholic on Nov 8, 2009 11:27 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'll say it for you

Gonzo, you don’t want to say its over. That the fat lady’s clearing her throat. Gonzo shes singing so loud right now I can’t hear myself think. Da Bears & the Pack are already checking out Mel Kiper’s big board. No chance at the division & probably not much of a chance for a wild card either. Rodgers is going to be lucky to get though the season with being injured. He’s taking a beating.

by iowaron on Nov 9, 2009 1:21 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Hey

did anyone mention that Rodgers’ 3 interceptions were as many as the old man has for the season? That must be a statistical fluke because his fans keep saying he’s a better decision maker and more accurate.

I was hoping he’d get a 4th on the hail mary to end the game. I wonder if any of the Bucs asked him to autograph their balls. That just doesn’t sound right.

by Salty on Nov 9, 2009 8:16 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Rogers played better than Favre in the preseason!!!

Honest Question? When was the last time Rogers led a 4th quarter comeback victory?

by solafide on Nov 9, 2009 8:24 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think it was

the last time he autographed my balls

by loafrat on Nov 9, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Easy now.

We all know that just as most of Allens sacks come in the fourth quarter when we have the lead, most of Aarons interceptions come when he is playing from behind.

Favre is plenty prone to throw picks when we need to come from behind to win, we just haven’t had to do it very often. That Favre to Lewis throw could hav just as easily been an int as a TD.

Comments like that will come back to bite us.

I like Rodgers

Everyone who knows me knows that. But let’s be straight — two of Rodgers three picks last Sunday came with the Packers up. the first on their second possession, with the Packers leading 7-0, the other one I can’t remember exactly when, but the Packers were still leading.

He may or may not be a diamond, but if he is, he is still a diamond in the rough. He needs to get better at a couple things before he can be declared good.

Strange Things Happen in Week 9

Tampa Bay Buc’s beat the Green Bay Packers, with the Buc’s wearing their Orangesicle Throwback Uniforms! QB Warner, on the Arizona Cardinals, threw 5 Touchdowns, to beat the Chicago Bears at Chicago. Detroit Lions were ahead in the 1st Quarter against Seattle Seahawks, at Seattle before Seattle came back to win the game.
San Diego Chargers beat the NY Giants at the Meadowlands (NJ). Why do the two New York NFL teams play in New Jersey?

Minnesota in their Bye Week, did not play, but increased their hold on the NFC North (Black&Blue) Conference.

With Week 11, we start the Flex Scheduling, and I expect that the Dec 29th Monday Night game, with the Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears to be rescheduled to a noon Sunday game. With a East Coast NFL teams game.

As we get deeper into the NFL Season, the line will become as confusing as “Abbott & Costello” , “Who on 1st” monolog!

Everyone we meet in life give us happiness, some by their arrival, others by their departure!

Because...

Game 163 was scheduled to be played at the Dome the same night that the Vikings played the Pack. MNF trumps division-determining baseball said The Powers That Be, and the Twins played the following day.

by fischean on Nov 10, 2009 2:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yea, but that had nothing to do with it being MNF.

The lease for the metrodome clearly states that the Vikes take priority over the twins.

That said, the reason MNF is not able to be flexed is because a different network owns MNF rights than those on Sunday. They are not going to be able to negotiate a change between two networks especially when it is a big game.

At least, that is my understanding.

by Bjorno on Nov 10, 2009 5:09 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Only games that can be flexed are Sunday games. Monday Night games are left alone.

The thing that made Sunday all the better?

Not only did the Bears lose, I was starting Warner in fantasy football on a whim because my opponent was starting the Chicago D. 30 points for Warner for me, and negative points for the Chicago D later, looks like a good pick!

Not letting up.

I think of GB’s game yesterday against the winless Bucs (btw, our local 1-A team who is #2 nationally and is 8-0 played the same way Saturday against an 0-9 team, Idaho State, and only by way of a FG with two ticks left, avoided spoiling a potentially perfect season) and my fear is that the Vikes will let up “ever so little” against the feckless Lions. Number one, it is a well known fact that you are much more likely to sustain an injury when you are easing off in your intensity of play than when you are playing “pedal to the metal”. Number two, not one of the teams in the league is incapable of beating any other team on a given Sunday. I hope they come out like they are playing the Saints or Pats; jump on top, and put their foot on Detriot’s throat for 60 minutes.

Since this is my first post, in the spirit of confession: I used to hate Minnesota and my favorite team on any given week was whoever was playing the Vikes. Now if their game isn’t televised my Sunday is practically ruined.

I agree

I don’t want the Vikings to take the Lions lightly, we seem to always have an issue with them year in and year out. The Vikings need to come out, throttle them the entire game, and make Matt Stafford have a repeat of this week (5 INTs in the second half), hell, I’d like to see him have a full game like that (can anyone say 10?) Our team is better than the Seahawks at every position, we should be able to out do them. I don’t want the Lions to have any breathing room this Sunday, let’s see a blow out, let’s see a massacre. Let’s give the Lions fans more of a reason to boo Matt Stafford and their front office. I want the type of game that would make the Ford Family want to sell the Lions to the lowest bidder the next day.

Anything less, and I’ll be disappointed. The Vikings need this game to go smoothly, they need this game to be a brutal, outright smothering of the Lions. If they play like the dominant team they are, they can set the pace for the rest of the year. Let’s see nothing but Purple making plays on the field this Sunday. That’s all I ask for.

Yeah - that was a close call for Montana

I’m an ISU alum (not totally proud of that when it comes to football), and I couldn’t believe we almost pulled that out against Montana. Jared Allen was in Poky for the game – apparently he inspired the Bengal defense.

Why the change of heart.

Azvikesfan, It wasn’t an overnight thing. Going way back …to the time of Tarkenton and Eller, etc (the ‘60s and ’70s), the Vikes were one of my favorite teams. I guess I just got so disappointed, so many times, I eventually got to the point where I wanted them to lose every game. My interest, and belief in them returning to a real SB contender came when Moss was signed. Randy had, almost single handedly IMO, beaten our local team for the 1-AA National Championship when he played for Marshall.. When he was drafted, by the NFL I found myself following his pro career (I’ve always had an affinity for the likable bad guys: Moss, Matuzak, Daly, Agassi, etc. Of course, he has moved on, but since then I have still seen continuing potenial in the Vikes. Not that there haven’t been some continuing frustrations. But they have also made some great aquisitions and look to me like a team that is determined to be a force to be reckoned with for the long haul.

Even when the vikes weren’t that good, i still watched and got frustrated as hell, but my being a fan never waned. even after 98 when i just lost it, still was a fan, and i had a whole 7 months to get over it.. that’s the beauty of the offseason, it gives you time to forget (at least partially) about what happened the year before. ALWAYS love the vikes, no question! SKOL!!!

Let's not start counting our chickens....

The season is only half over. Yeah, we’re in good shape but winning the division is not what we’re shooting for. We did that last year, without a decent QB.

If anything happens to the ol’ man from Mississippi, we’re in trouble—-and everybody knows it.

Yeah, of course we like to see our rivals lose. But rubbing it in and gloating about it, basically putting your name on the trophy at the midpoint is premature at best and asking for trouble—-we don’t need any bad luck around here.

One game at a time, friends. Slow and steady wins the race.

Every team is an injury away from ordinary

I’m hoping that the Vikes can get some playing time for Tarvaris Jackson, Ashley Allen, Jasper Brinkley, Jon Cooper, Jamarca Sanford, and Albert Young. If we can have a great first half maybe we can see how the bench is progressing.

by lifelongvike on Nov 9, 2009 3:29 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

Here’s to hoping we can clinch home-field early and have some fun watching the youngins play the game.

I am excited to see Allen, Sanford and Kenny Onatulu against first stringers.

I also want to see if Tjack has progressed.

by Bjorno on Nov 10, 2009 5:12 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

The cool thing about the Vikings this year

Is that they may be two, maybe three injuries from ordinary. Winfield being out could have been devastating, he is arguably the best player on D (yes, maybe better than Allen — there is at least an argument). But it hasn’t been.

Seriously, there is a lot of depth. We have Chester behind AP, and although I would not want to go back to Jacksonfels, it still is better than what many other teams have. Like I said, Colts and Saints are much more vulnerable at QB than we are.
