'98 Vikings vs. '09 Saints
I have seen enough of this year's New Orleans team to make this comparison with the 1998 Vikings. There are not perfect comparisons between individual players--Reggie Bush, for instance, has a very different running style than did Robert Smith, and none of NO's talented receivers are in the same league as the Randy Moss of 1998--and their offensive schemes are somewhat different. However, both teams' overall philosophy for winning games is identical: balanced and explosive offenses that put lots of points on the board very quickly, and enough defensive talent to protect a big lead. That strategy was good enough for the 1998 Vikings to go 15-1 in the regular season. After last night, I do not see the 2009 Saints doing any worse than that. With all due respect to R4F, his conference playoff scenario thread is now probably irrelevant.
This leads to the big question: can the 2009 Vikings play the role of the 1998 Falcons? (Probably without an assist from Garrett Hartley and John Carney, the 2009 Saints' placekickers.) I think they can. The Vikings have a defense that can punch the Saints and their high-powered offense right in the mouth. The Vikings also have enough offense to score on the Saints, and keep things close. The Saints' offense is superior to that of the Vikings this year, but the Vikings are a more balanced team overall, and taking advantage of that will be the key for Minnesota in such a matchup.
I am not guaranteeing a victory should Minnesota play New Orleans in the NFC Championship game; after all, in January of 1999 Atlanta needed, among other things, the absolutely most horribly-timed miss of Gary Anderson's career to beat the Vikings. But I do believe this year's Viking defense can knock Brees, Bush, and co. off-balance and disrupt that pinball offense, much like Atlanta rattled Randall Cunningham in the second half of the January 1999 NFC Championship game. Dan Reeves' team was able to put pressure on a Vikings defense that was used to protecting big leads, and that was just enough for Atlanta to pull off the win on the road. I think this years' Vikings can do the same in the Superdome this January, should it come to that.

Wasn't that great?
Now Saints are in that position, but our Vikings command respect as well…
Really have to say that the NFC Championship game may be more exciting than the SB….
Hmmmmm….let’s see, Vikings versus Colts, Vikings dominate and finally bring home the bacon…..and this AFTER our victory over the hapless Saints in the NFC Championship game!
Has a good ring to it, no?
Two timeless matchups…both with Vikings as one of the opponents…
Can’t wait!

Saints fan's take
I’m not going to arrogantly suggest the Vikings won’t have a chance against the Saints. That would just be delusional. However, I like my Saints chances at this point. When you guys get Winfield back, I think your pass D will improve and that combined with the your run D and pass rush could provide problems to Brees. We’ll also be getting back our two starting CBs in Greer and Porter just in time for the playoffs. With Sedrick Ellis returning from injury last night, our run defense was noticeably better than it was during the four games he missed. RBs were gashing us for big yardage, but I expect that will be limited in future games with Big Sed back in the lineup. The line plays as a much better unit when he’s there. His replacement during those four games was Anthony Hargrove, who is a recently converted DE.
If we stay relatively healthy, I like our chances either in the Superdome or in Minnesota. The one constant this year is Sean Payton’s and Gregg Williams’ ability to come up with creative game plans each week to combat their opponents. I think they kinda relaxed against the Rams and Panthers and almost got beat. I hope they don’t do that against the Skins. For the big games like last night and the playoffs, me thinks they’ll find whatever way necessary to surprise their opponent and win. Still, Brett Favre is downright magical this year, so you won’t catch me saying the Vikings would have no chance. It’s impossible for me to not like that guy. One thing is for sure, the Vikings would play better against the Saints than the Pats did last night. I think both teams are relatively even right now except the Saints have the edge on offense with their multitude of weapons and the Vikings have the best D-line in the league. Also, the Vikings kicking game is wayyyyyyy better than ours. Longwell has been money all year and most Saints fans now want Carney benched in favor of Hartley.
Wow! I can’t believe you guys were actually rooting for the Pats in your open game threads. Well, I guess I can. I would have done the same if the situation was reversed. Only, I wouldn’t have resorted to name-calling. The “Aints?” Come on, guys. That was so 30 years ago. Sorry the Saints disappointed you. :-)

'Aints is just like us getting called the Queens
I don’t see any harm in it, only good natured fun. Hell, I call them the Queens from time to time. What I saw last night- A very smart QB picking apart a very young D for several big “oopsie” plays on the Pats D, and capitalization on said plays by the Saints and a Saints D that loves to play with the lead and take more gambles for turnovers than say, our Vikes D. Different philosophies. Obviously the homers in us are going to skew the matchup in our own favor, but to be perfectly honest I see this matchup as if we played 10 games at neutral field, it’d go 5-5 or 6-4.
by Jepp The Viking on Dec 1, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions
Agreed
We’re all homers for our favorite team, so we’ll definitely skew the matchup to suit what we want to happen. At this point, both teams are pretty evenly matched and either could win on any given Sunday. The Queens? I’ve never heard the Vikings called that. I don’t understand that one.

they call us the Vi-queens (Vi-kings)

No, I wasn't
I’ve never heard anyone refer to the Vikings as the Queens. Maybe I just need to get out more.

Theres a difference though
Now I’m not saying its right to use name calling but! U guys came up with that one yourselves or even use it. The Brown Paper Bags with “Aints” written on them in (IF I may quote Chris Berman) “Nawleans” was Saints fans doing not Vikings fans, we’re simply following by lead.
But with that said I am sorry for making fun of your team. Have a Meryy Christmas mate!

Going with the Vikes.
I know I’m a homer. I watched the Saints kick the Pats but I can’t see that same thing against us.
The Saints were up big time for this game because they haven’t played that many good teams.
I’ll admit the Vikes schedule isn’t the greatest but the Saints is even easier. People may think I’m crazy but the Vikes are a better team than the Saints period. Statistics lie. A horrible tripping call against us against the Steelers is the only thing keeping us from undefeated ourselves. Games come down to the trenches. Our lines both offense & defense are better. Both teams have plenty of playmakers. The longer the Saints go without a loss the more pressure they will face. Satchmo26 you said we have the best D line in the league. So do you think that the best D-line in the league is going to let Brees stand back there and pick them apart? Brees will make some plays but he won’t make enough.
Favre has been in a lot of big games. How many has Brees been in.
Eerie
I was thinking the same thing last night as I battled insomnia — maybe we could do to the Saints what the Falcons did to us in ‘98? The parallels are there, right down to Carney’s missed FG. I can practically picture in my mind Allen beating the tackle and reaching out batting the ball out of Brees hand at the end of the 1st half…..
TiggerSr
Will be an interesting Championship game....
No doubt…
May the best team win…and I think will be the Vikes….
This Viking team has a little more power than that 98 team….on all sides (O + D + ST)….
Statistics be damned, is in their blood….ask JA, BF, PH AP, CT, Hutch, Berrian, Winfiels, Rice, Shiancoe, Loadholt, Williams trio, McKinneym and etc.
The NO Saints better be ready…..I know I am!

In order for that to happen
BOTH teams need to make it there. Thats not that easy this day and age for the Number 1 and 2 to both make it to the Conference Championship Game. Jus sayin.

It's tough for me...
…as I’ve always liked the Saints as one of my backup teams for when or if the Vikes fall flat during any specific season. I’m happy for New Orlean’s fans but I’m bummed that we finally put together another great team, only to be overshadowed by the Saints unexpected splendor. Sigh.
Still, all things being equal (play on words intended), I think we’d have a very exciting match-up vs. the Saints if we both made it to the NFC Championships. Whoever would win such a game would be the team I’d pick to win the SB. :)
If you pick things apart a bit, it’d go like this (imho):
Defensive Line – Vikings
Secondary – Saints (though I see our Vikes improving in this area)
Offensive Line – Vikings by a smidge
Special Teams – Vikings by a smidge due to better kicking and Harvin’s capabilities
Offense – Saints by a smidge (slightly better running stats and higher scoring average)
X-Factor – Vikings (Harvin)
So it’d be a pretty tough game for either team and it will probably just come down to home-field advantage, which it seems likely the Saints will possess when the time comes. Sigh.
Are we forgetting INDY

The winner gets to play Indy. How is this team being overlooked as one of the best in the decade. Its one thing to get a large lead and have a game get out of hand. Its another to make a comeback week after week. Whoever plays this team will be no huge favorite.
"Everyone has a plan 'till they get punched in the mouth." - Mike Tyson
The Vikings have a defense that can punch the Saints and their high-powered offense right in the mouth.
Yep. That reminded me of the Williams Wall, with Jared Allen on one end and Ray Edwards on the other, backed up by EJ, Greenway, and Leber… That’s a fair punch in the mouth. And that’s what we’ll need to do to counter Bree’s high-powered air attack.

From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.

The way I see it
is in order for the vikes to win, they need to be able to pressure Brees without a blitz. He is just too good to not be able to find the check down on a blitz. If we can do this and not turn the ball over more than once…we win. If we can’t get pressure and not turn the ball over…we lose.
by TheEvilProfessor on Dec 2, 2009 9:01 AM CST reply actions
because lets face it
if the QB doesn’t have alot of time, there won’t be any deep passes for the saints and if our O keeps out D on the field too long, they will get tired and eventually get burned when the pass rush slows down and coverage gets a little softer.
There isn’t an LB on the field for the Saints that can cover harvin or Shiancoe. This is a game where the vikes pound the rock, do play action, dump off passes to Harvin and probe the middle of the field all day. I will conveniently not talk about how we match up on D with the Saints….:)
by TheEvilProfessor on Dec 2, 2009 9:04 AM CST up reply actions
lol
Good call… I think that is the way we would need to win this game get our front four pressuring Brees solidly, and stopping the run (a heavy load) send the rest to keep him honest. Then run and dump the ball on offense so we tire their D out and rest ours as much as possible. I wan’t Phat Pat to be fresh in the 4th quarter when they are trying to make their come back :D
But personally, been a fan to long, I just hope we meet someone in the NFC championships… These eggs havn’t hatched yet folks!
Yep....
A lot of football left to be played to get to that point….
We will be there though, I do believe that….
This Vikings team is hungry….
- as is NO….
We will see….soon….
In the meantime we have some great games coming up….
Starting on Sunday with Arizona….
That is where I am putting the main focus on at the moment….while a bitttttt of me is allowing myself to look further down the road….

I Don't Think We're Eligible for The Role of '98 Falcons
The Vikings are clearly one of the very few elite teams in the NFL, with great balance and the ability to dominate good teams on both sides of the ball. While the Saints are looking terrifying right now, they’re not obviously, significantly, better than the Vikes. Contrary to ‘98, when we had NO BUSINESS losing to the Falcons, it wouldn’t shock people if the Vikes were to knock off the Saints in a playoff matchup. Chris Chandler, people. He’s not Brett Favre, let’s just say that.
Unfortunately for us, Sean Payton’s not Denny Green, either. And I also don’t see Pierre Thomas running out of bounds at critical moments.
Don't forget
the Falcons were 14-2 that year, so it’s not like we lost to a team that was lucky to be in the playoffs

A buddy of mine is a huge saints fan
And I kid with him that Sean Payton is Mike Martz v 2.0. In reality they looked scary good the other night. But NE looked equally opposite and awful. ;-)
"We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Paul allen made the comparison.
The saints play like the 98’ vikes and we play like the 98’ falcons. I guess we know how that went.
So sad, but so true.

Time of Possession
I see this is a weakness in the Saints vertical attack. Brees is very good on the vertical, he strikes deep and fast… and gives the ball over to the other side. There’ve been a number of very high-scoring teams that coulda shoulda gone to the Super Bowl and won it (anyone remember Dan Fouts and Air Coreyell?), but it didn’t happen. Consistently, it didn’t happen.
Favre’s bread and butter is ball-control. I think that in a matchup, he’ll own the clock for much longer than Brees, he’ll control the pace of the game and he’ll wear out the opposing D, and keep our own D that much fresher. That’s going to the key because our D is very high-energy and I think they were wearing themselves out early when they were on the field too much. A fresh Jared Allen is something that Brees is not going to like.
