The Crystal Ball: NFC Playoff seeding & WC weekend results

NOTE: This was written before Zona lost to 49ers Monday night.  Now there is a good chance #3 and #4 will flip.  This means, for most part, possibly swap "Eagles" for "Cardinals" in the following post.

---

Although there are still three weeks to go, now that we got past Bengals I feel fairly confident to predict the following NFC seeding:

  1. Saints
  2. Vikings
  3. Cards
  4. Eagles
  5. Packers (WC top seed)
  6. Giants (WC 2nd seed; though they are trailing 'Boys right now, I'm predicting Romo & Co lose to both Saints and Philly, and Giants already have tiebreaker)

I don't want to jinx Vikings, so I won't predict past divisional round (for now).  But here's what I can come up with for results of WC weekend:

  1. Giants at Cards (or Cowboys, if it does turn out to be them): Cards win
  2. Packers at Eagles: Toss up, since each team has proven themselves capable of winning -- or losing -- any game.

This means the divisional round will be:

  1. Cards at Vikings
  2. Packers or Eagles at Saints

Note if Cards are #3 and win, and we are #2, it does not matter what happens in other WC game, we play Cards at home.  If Cards lose, we play Eagles if they win, and if they lose along with Cards (both home teams lose), we play Packers.

And to be honest...

This is what I’m hoping for! I really would like to see the cards again. That lose hurt. I believe at home we would bring the pain. I like the giants making the WC. This week was my deciding factore on the boys. If the giants would have won and Cowboys would have won, it would have been Dallas’ East! but sadly… its the Eagles. Honest to god the only team in the playoffs I don’t wanna play. I really don’t want them to get that 3 seed. But who knows? The giants aren’t a bad team. They could knock the cards off, and then were still looking at gettin the Eagles.

My ideal playoffs is: Giants/Cowboys @ Cards, and Pack @ Eagles. Cards win. Pack wins. So Cards @ Vikes, and Pack @ Saints. Vikes Win. Pack win. Pack @ Vikes.

Brett Favre and Co. would hand Ted Thompson and the Green Baby suck bags one final loss of the season, as we skip, and hop to Miami!!! YEEEEEESSSS!

...add #4 to the mix and see what you get... Championship.

It'd be a good storyline, but..

I doubt it will be as easy as the other games this season against them. Their O-line is doing markedly better at protecting Rodgers since we put the hurting on him a second time, and the defense, now that Kampman is out of there, seems to actually be decent. It’d be a good game, but I’m not sure I’d want to face them again.

I have a feeling that Dallas gets in

and beats the Cardinals, and the Eagles beat the Packers, but I agree that the Philly-GB game is a toss up and could go either way. But I like McNabb over Rodgers in that. Playoff pressure and all.

That makes Dallas at New Orleans
Eagles (or the Packers) at Minnesota

I like Minnesota’s chances against either Philly or Green Bay.

Dallas beating Cardinals?

Well, stranger things have happened I suppose. For me I guess that’d be my safest call in all probable match-ups, but going the other way.

GB is weak

They will lose the WC round as though they were playing the Bucs.

by KC Viking on Dec 14, 2009 6:21 PM CST reply actions

They've looked really really good!

I just can’t believe they have the number ONE defense (for yards I believe?) cuz we absolutely destroyed their D! Didn’t we score 38 friggin points in Green Bay? I just don’t see them with a 9-4 record getting the 6th seed. They’ll be the 5th. Which is the best playoff team for not winning their division. I strongly believe the Eagles will be the 4 seed. They finish with the 49ers, Broncos and Dallas. The Cards finish up with their game tonight vs the 49ers, Lions, Rams ( i know…) and Green Bay. The Cards will be the 3. So MilCardFan I think your right with Green Bay going to Philly, and Dallas going to Arizona. But I think Arizona is coming to Minnesota. The Saints can have Philly.

...add #4 to the mix and see what you get... Championship.

I would prefer AZ

I think I would prefer AZ to Philly, but I not mind Dallas or the Giants either

One Game at at TIME!!!

pleeeeez!!!

3 games to go… so much could happen. Let’s focus on the Panthers and another W…
let the post-season ‘fall as it will’.

GO VIKES!!

I BELIEVE...

LOL, we’re fans, posting on an internet board. What we “focus on” doesn’t matter squat as far as what actually happens. The players need to focus on Panters, yes, but we can talk about and do whatever we want here & it won’t make one iota of difference :)

Call me superstitous but I agree

Well to a point. I don’t want to see Philly though they have killed us in the playoffs a lot. And I think Reid still has Chilly’s number when it comes to coaching.

I wonder

Does anyone who voted “too early to predict” now want to change their vote now that Zona lost to the 49ers?

by puddnhead on Dec 15, 2009 8:45 AM CST reply actions

GO EAGLES

This thread gets me excited about a potential Eagles/Saints match up. Given the close calls of the Saints recently against sub-par opponents, I think the Eagles could hand them their first loss in the divisional round, which would leave the Vikes with Home-field advantage. I’m a fan of the Eagle from this point forward.

by Rodeorat on Dec 15, 2009 10:03 AM CST reply actions

Careful

The way it looks now, WE will be playing the Eagles in week 2 of the post-season

by mjmrad on Dec 15, 2009 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah a lot has changed now that Arizona lost last night

Teams we match up well against: Dallas, Giants. Although both have solid defenses, their offensive schemes play into what we do defensively.

Teams that we might struggle with: Arizona, Philly. Now if Westbrook and Maclin are still out, then Philly could probably bump up to the other category.

Dark horse: GB. You know what they say about how hard it is to beat a team 3 times in a season. You dont have to look any farther than GB. Back in 04 they swept us in the regualr season, only for the FULL MOON to shine on them in the playoffs.

"We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Yeah

No arguement. I really expected the Cardinals to run another 3 wins straight, they had a really soft schedule weeks 14-16 I thought. Hence I thought they had the #3 seed locked up.

Oops!

Now I’m thinking it has to be Philly thta has the inside track on #3 … meaning we get them, if they win week 1 (given they play Giants or Cowboys at home, a safe bet).

by puddnhead on Dec 15, 2009 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

Looks fairly correct.

I see it basically ending up as what is shown above. The 3-way NFC East run – is what it really will come down to. I think GB will finish with the higher WC seed. Even though they have Pittsburgh & AZ Cardinals. – Steelers isn’t playing their best ball, and Cards may rest starters. Could be a game played for no reason to have starters in.

I think I would rather end up against the Giants than the Eagles. I don’t think the Cowboys will make it. – But if they do, they won’t be so bad to go up against either.

The WC Game will probably come down to the Pack Vs. Eagles & Cards Vs. Giants
I’d rather play the Giants, and I’d rather see the Pack beat the Eagles.

I think the Giants would be an easier team to beat over the Cards. Cuz if the Cards are ON – good luck beating them, if they are OFF – and turnovers are frequent, it should be an easy W.

GB has a more similar offense to what we’re used to, and we’re more similar matched. I’d rather see the Pack go up against the Saints to see how well they fare. If they win, sweet! NFC championship in the dome, if not, least we can prepare better.

by Deek on Dec 15, 2009 11:26 AM CST reply actions

one thing

we don’t want to play the packers in the playoffs.

i don’t know what it is, but it’s VERY (and i’m using caps so you know i’m serious) difficult to beat the same team 3 times in one year. it’s only been done once or twice.

we match up well with the packers but i’d rather not play them again. call it a superstition or whatever. we match up badly against arizona on offense and defense so i’d rather not play them again. we match up badly against the saints on defense but okay on offsense. everyone else i think we match up okay with.

by iseepurplepeople on Dec 15, 2009 12:08 PM CST reply actions

Out of those 3....

We are likely to match up against one of them.

Only scenario where wouldn’t match up against them is…
Giants go up against AZ and win.
GB goes up against Phill. and loses
Phill beats the Eagles
We beat the Giants
MN/Phill NFC championship
Could it happen? Yes, but now we’re stuck against an Eagles team that some would not care to play against again.

I believe our team is confident enough to beat the Packers a 3rd time. Favre plays his best in high-emotional games & I can not see him doing bad at the Metrodome vs. the Packers who are on a late stride of continuous victories. Could be bad for the Pack, may want to take a loss there to keep them in check otherwise they may have a sudden stop.

Cards can beat us if they’re game is ON
NO can beat us if they have a stellar game – their offense is explosive, so they could be up 14 points on us real fast.

Eagles, Giants, Cowboys – I would not worry about
Saints & Cardinals – I sort of do
Packers – only cuz you are partially correct w/ the 3rd time thing.. Revenge will be wanted, really really bad. — But what better way to have a playoff game then to play someone within your own division, since you know it’ll be a good game.

a 3rd time beating the packers will make this a very successful season

by Deek on Dec 15, 2009 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

i wasn’t saying we couldn’t beat any of those teams, we most certainly can. include the pack for a third time.

by iseepurplepeople on Dec 17, 2009 4:23 PM CST up reply actions

Just my opinion

The Vikings can play any team, anywhere, anytime, and I will like their chance to win.

Now let’s beat the Panthers.

by medicineball on Dec 15, 2009 1:43 PM CST reply actions

Couldn't agree more...

When the Vikings play to their full potential, there isn’t a team on that list that they couldn’t beat.

by EasternVike on Dec 15, 2009 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

I am confused by all of this apprehension towards the Eagles.

We will literally kick the snot out of that weak-ass no tackling afraid to hit anyone defensive secondary of theirs. All around, we are better and more physical. The only reason they put up such big numbers Sunday was because the Giants secondary wore the same skirts. I swear, that game looked like flag-football to me. It was like everyone was afraid to fall down.

by Jshore on Dec 15, 2009 3:30 PM CST reply actions

I agree with you

I think the apprehension comes from the Vikings losing the last 5 games to the Eagles, and not beating them since 1997.
