Erin Henderson Suspended for Four Games

Is your last name Henderson?  If so. . .you might want to keep that to yourself for a while.

Last Sunday in Arizona, we saw Vikings' linebacker E.J. Henderson suffer a fractured femur against the Cardinals, an injury that ended his season and has put his career in jeopardy.  Today, word has come down that E.J.'s younger brother, Erin, has been suspended for four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing substances.

Erin Henderson took his brother's place on the active roster prior to this past weekend's game against Cincinnati, and recorded three special teams tackles in Minnesota's 30-10 victory over Cincinnati.  Now, he will miss the final three games of the 2009 regular season, as well as Minnesota's first post-season contest.

The Vikings have promoted linebacker J Leman from the practice squad to take the place of Henderson the Younger, and have re-signed CB Deandre Wright to the practice squad.

Does anyone have a feeling on this?

Was this a stupid move by Erin, or a vengeful league seeking retribution at the Vikings after the Williams ordeal? I honestly feel it could be either and don’t want to jump to conclusions either way.

Don't know

It did occur just after the court said they won’t revisit the case. That means Kevin Williams and Pat Williams will keep playing through this season including playoffs without a suspension.

We just don’t know. Forget about. Focus on the Panthers.

So, who moves into Erin Henderson’s spot on special teams? Probably Greenway. Just a guess, though.

the answer was stated in this blog

J Lehman

"We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."

Retribution?

So we circumvented their rules and to get back at us they suspend a special team LB?

I highly doubt they would suspend someone as useless Erin Henderson just to serve us revenge. Likely it was because he failed a drug test and a four game suspension is standard for that kind of infraction.

I don't Believe you are supppose to get suspended 4 games

for your first encounter right?

Why Do People Question The Vikings' Status?

by UnBannedVikingholic on Dec 16, 2009 7:03 AM CST up reply actions

Well, in this case, you can

Erin is suspended for taking “performance enhancing drugs.” The NFL has a very wide definition of that. Thus, we don’t have anything to suggest he’s on ’roids. He may have just taken a vitamin supplement that was not approved by the NFL and inadvertantly had some substance in it from the factory it was made in. There is no “first encounter, keep it private” thing for performance-enhancing drugs.

The other possibility is that Erin took a diuretic or something that is banned because it could mask a performance-enhancing drug test. If he took that, they would suspend him as if he took a performance-enhancing drug.

Erin is not suspended for taking any recreational drug, like marijuana.

Insanely Foolish Move by Erin

…unless his intent was to give the NFL drug-testing people a Christmas gift and raise in their holiday spirits with a law and order west of the St. Croix public service announcement.

This golden oldie goes out to #50: “I always feel like somebody’s watching me.”

Yes, dude, what part of those newpaper stories did you not understand?

by Elgar on Dec 15, 2009 6:04 PM CST reply actions

Until we learn what exactly he was suspended for...

you can’t really form an educated opinion about his suspension.

For all we know, he might have just missed a test.

Either way though, this sucks. I’m sure the Viking haters out there will gobble this up and it will re-ignite all the anti-Viking rhetoric we heard when the Williams case was in the news every day.

by EasternVike on Dec 15, 2009 6:08 PM CST reply actions

No, Erin tested positive. If the NFL actually follows the confidentiality portion of its flawed drug testing program, we will never learn what he was found to be taking. If he tells anyone, he can be fined.

by Elgar on Dec 15, 2009 6:18 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmmmmmm.....

Based on the impeccable record of the NFL to now (???), I would question this, but more than likely a brain fart (a BIG one) on Henderson’s part (said with a wry smile)….

I find it HIGHLY unlikely he was not aware of the banned substances out there , and in light of the controversy over the Williams’ fiasco, should know better than to take anything at all….

So……..Brain fart huh? In any case, we likely will never know…..

Move on….note this and see what to do later…

Cat time…..

We will never learn what it was?

Elgar, you know full well that information will be leaked just as the substance the Williamses tested positive for was leaked.

I would be willing to bet that he and EJ rolled up a huge blunt the first chance they had after EJ’s injury, and Erin had a random a few days later.

I agree...

Someone, somewhere will open their mouth and it will spread like wildfire.

I like your theory about him smoking it up with his brother and if it is indeed the case, I can’t say I blame him.

I broke my back when I was in high school playing varsity football. Needless to say, I bought as much as the stuff as I could get my hands on at the time. It really is one of the best pain relievers there is.

doobie brothers for sure...

just chillin’ and getting a jump on the healing…

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Dec 15, 2009 11:15 PM CST up reply actions

If that's what they did, the Vikings should dump them both

Don’t wait for EJ to heal, don’t let Erin play later.

J Leman, wow

I thought he was really good coming out of Illinois. This is his chance to shine.

Go get ’em Jay…I mean, uh, J.

J Leman

All he did in college was produce on the field (and off the field as well, where he was an Academic All-American). His 40 time and Rose Bowl injury (perhaps unfairly) killed his draft stock.

The Vikings are usually spectacular at finding & singing gems from the undrafted free agent pool — I thought they did well with Leman & Radovich back in ’08 and I was pleasantly surprised to see them back on the practice squad last week.

Leman is apparently one of those “high motor”, good-leadership players, which is a polite way of saying he lacks superlative natural athletic ability. At the very least, he could be a special teams ace in the mold of Heath Farwell or Kenny Onatolu (I’d prefer to see him taking Erin H.‘s role on special teams over Greenway, only because I remember that’s where Greenway got hurt his rookie year).

I don’t expect to see him in any defensive packages, barring a total breakdown. Farwell was worked in early in the season and Onatolu more lately, but because the Vikings just never have more than 3 LBs on the field, and often enough only have 2, Leman’s shot at any defensive stats will be limited unless he really impresses the coaches during practice — or that aforementioned meltdown occurs.

But yes, nice add, particularly for a team concerned about long-term depth at ILB. But that’s what he’ll be, for now – depth.

Leman spent the preseason with Carolina

And I was disappoitned they let him go. He had a GREAT camp and preseason for us. He’s a tackling machine but just lacks the top end speed the NFL is looking for. I think he will play well for you in run support. Its his pass coverage where he can get exposed. Again, one of the bright spots in the Panthers camp.

J. Leman

I been pulling for Erin to come thru for us… But I hope Leman shows some of what he did in college, He almost single handedly beat my Buckeyes a few years ago, I thought he was a beast!!! (I also thought the same of Eramus James, who terrorized us as well)…

Negative Publicity

Well – with Erin getting suspended the Vikings have been taking a lot of heat about being considered a bunch of cheaters. If we look at the situation, we do not necessarily know what particular situation he is in. Did Erin know he was taking a performance enhancement drug? Was it something that masks the performance drug (Like StarCaps)? Or was it something he took that was on the banned list, that he was unaware of? Many possibilities.

Erin Henderson maintains his innocence

In defense of his good name, Erin Henderson says he did nothing wrong. He suspects that either the test was wrong or something inadvertantly got into some medication he took during training camp.

I support Erin Henderson, especially after reading this story. That said, everything just needs to focus on beating the Panthers right now.

Thank you for the post!!!!
But Henderson said if he were guilty, he would have accepted the suspension and served it at the beginning of the 2009 season because he already was sidelined with a calf injury. But to clear his name, he hired a lawyer and a toxicologist to help him with his appeal, even though he knew his chances of “beating the league was slim to none.”

That’s because the league handles the testing, penalizing and appealing of the policy.

“I could have easily served my four games during that time and been done with it, and I could be playing right now,” Henderson said. "But in my heart of hearts, I knew I didn’t do anything wrong.

“If I was wrong, if I did something wrong, I would served my four games like a man. I wouldn’t have killed my team, like I am now.

- Twin Cities.com

"

Now THAT sounds like the Erin Henderson we’ve come to know on the Vikings.

As a fan, he has my support until if and when they prove that he did something wrong.
