Will the Vikings soon play their last game at the Dome?
The last Vikings home game of the 2009 regular season is coming up against the New York Giants in Week 17.
Will that be the last Vikings game--or perhaps the last Vikings regular season game--ever played at the Mall of America Field at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome? It is very possible. While the Vikings have a lease to play at the Metrodome through the 2011 season, that could change if the Vikings and their landlord agree to change it.
There are hopes that a new stadium agreement and plan could be finalized in 2010. The Vikings, the Minnesota state legislature, and the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC, the owner of the Metrodome which leases it out to the Vikings) are all very interested in getting the stadium situation resolved. One proposal is racinos. This would allow slot machines at the race tracks. The revenue would pay for a new stadium, plus other state expenses. The Native American tribes don't like that, though, because they want a monopoly on gambling in Minnesota. The Indian tribes that profit so enormously from gambling in Minnesota have a significant financial interest in seeing that the Vikings get a new stadium, because if they don't, the goodwill they have enjoyed in the Minnesota legislature could turn quite sour. Imagine if the Vikings were forced to move to California primarily because of one special interest group. Lots of legislators would lose their seats to challengers who would not be friendly to Indian tribes' interests. I think everybody will be on board to support a new stadium.
The retractable roof option would create a world-class stadium in Minnesota at a relatively bargain price, at a time of cheap labor, cheap materials, and low interest rates. It would employ many, and spark new growth in the state.
If a new stadium plan were entered into, the Dome could be imploded as soon as winter or spring of 2010. From that point, the new stadium would take about two years to construct. The new stadium would be built on the same site to reuse infrastructure and save money. The Vikings have indicated that, if this scenario were to occur, they would like to lease the TCF Bank Stadium, where the Gophers now play, until they can move into the new stadium.
Furthermore, if this scenario comes true, the Vikings will be playing outdoors next year. With a retractable roof stadium, they will be outdoors in the future quite often.
Recently, the Minnesota Twins celebrated the end of their days at the Metrodome. Twins fans will always remember "Game 163," the extra-inning tiebreaking thriller that the Twins won at the Metrodome to clinch the Central Division. That was the last regular season Twins game that will ever be played at the Metrodome. Previously, the Twins had many celebrations throughout the year of the Metrodome. They knew well in advance that 2009 would be their last year inside.
Perhaps the Vikings should hold a mini-celebration of their seasons at the Metrodome before or after the Giants game just in case. This could be the last chance to hold that celebration. The Vikings could theoretically hold a celebration during a home playoff game, if the Vikings get one, but everybody would be more focused on the playoffs at that point.

Didn't Vote
Didn’t vote, but no, the Vikings are not playing their last season in the Metrodome.
Regardless of what deal is or isn’t reached to keep the franchise in Minnesota, they aren’t going anywhere next year.

New $870M "No pay plan" stadium proposal by the MSFC
Linky. Retractable roof, 65,000 seats, 148 luxury boxes and could be ready by 2013.

65,000?
I would have gone with 68,000 minimum, more like 70,000 like the Vikings proposal. Do they have any plans up to view? Given the lower amont of seats, Im a bit wary of it until further review and I can see why Wilf might be a little aprehensive as well. Deferring judgement till a later date

On seating
I agree. there should be 70 -75,000 minimum. More revenue and I think that ,given their performance this year, the loyal fans of the Vikings will show up in droves! At least, I would hope so. And my own personal opinion, I really like the design of the new stadium, especially the retractable roof. Let’s let ’em play in 0 degree weather and some snow, like they used to. i think it would make them tougher. Look back…I think that there is one team with a Super Bowl victory that plays in a dome, the rest play outside.

Eh
Found the plans here “”http://www.msfc.com/tour.cfm" target="new">Metrodome Next". As far as seating, on par with Lucas Oil Field and some of the newere ones. Didnt read in depth on the proposal as of yet, just a quick gleam over so Im not all that sure if seating is expandable. But from what I saw, Im sorry but that is one ugly ass design.

That's not bad.
I would still prefer a roofless design with a lower price tag that they can actually sell to MN taxpayers though.

Going topless may happen
As the Vikings still appear to be exploring their own thing around town. Who knows, they may find one of the Burbs to play in and go without a roof. The MSC is the ones who are adiment on a roof. If the Vikes take care of themselves and leave the MSC out of the loop, so be it. Then they can have the Dome all to themselves to do as they please!

Retractable roof adds about $200M
A fixed roof adds about $125K. Source: MPR

That's a lot of dough...
I hope if given the opportunity, Ziggy would forgo the roof in order to get the stadium and keep the Vikings in Minnesota.
Personally,
I hope Zygi skips the MSFC and builds an open air stadium in the ’burbs.

Isn’t IKEA ‘nordic’? Hmmm… the Mall of America Field at the IKEA-Dome…

As I said, Topless could happen
He has not made a roof a demand and said dome or open stadium are both welcomed. Its the morons at the Commission that want to keep a dome. I say, let them keep the Metrodome and Wilf and company build a new outdoor stadium somewhere else.

Damn that's an ugly stadium
Time for them to go back to the drawing board.
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Vikes are contractually obligated to the Metrodome until 2011
If there is no stadium deal in place by then, they will move.

Vikings have apparently already rejected this plan

Well
They didn’t reject the plan. They just want a stadium and the MSFC is jerking them around and wasting time.

the arch in the center
Reminds me of the St. Louis arch. I have an idea, make it dip down in the center call it double arches stadium and get the money from McD’s for the stadium!

this may not be as far fetched as it would seem
The corporate head of Mcd’s is from St. Paul she married the old man and took over after he died. Graduated from Humboldt in the late 60’s.
