Reggie Bush

Recently there's been speculation that the saints have no intention of bring Bush back next season as his cap numbers would be too high for his production. What would you guys think of bringing in a guy like this if we ended up losing chester taylor in free agency?

Bush isn't a powerback by any means of the word but is fast and dangerous if he gets to the outside. He may compliment Peterson well as we can use him a reciever and jack of all trades, kind of like Taylor. And if favre comes back we would have yet another weapon in the arsenal to tear up the North and the league in general. I'm typing this between classes so i don't have a ton of time to put up a full argument for or against the USC legend. Give me your thoughts, cause this could be an interesting acquisition.

Not so much

Bush could probably come in and contribute on 3rd downs and in the punt return game, but I believe that would be the extent of his value on the vikings.

The vikings have more immediate needs in free agency…number 1 being a replacement for Tyrell Johnson (am I the only one getting on this guys case? b/c he sucks). It will be interesting to see what kind of contract he gets, but he probably wont be worth the price tag unless a team want to sell some tickets.

Not surprising at all

After noticing how they’re jumping over here to put their two cents in whenever the Saints are mentioned, I just thought they had an insecurity complex.

Evenso, the ones who’ve posted here have been pretty respectful and well-spoken, offering thoughtful commentary. Too bad the main site is so different.

There's bad seeds on every sports blog

The Vikings are my no. 2 favorite team behind the Saints and I feel a slight brotherhood with Vikings fans ever since that douchebag Roger Goodell tried to bogusly suspend our players for using a tainted weight-loss supplement. Don’t get me started on that. Even if that weren’t the case, no one with any class should ever come over to a team blog like this one or any other and start putting down that team or its fans. Most Saints fans wouldn’t do that, but there are exceptions just like there are exceptions among Vikings fans. I mean come on—we’re not Bears fans. Those guys are the biggest d-bags on the planet. By the way, I thoroughly enjoyed that beat-down the Vikes put on them last week. I should have been rooting for the Bears to win so the Saints would have a little more of a cushion in the race for homefield advantage, but I just couldn’t make myself do it.

Also, I’ve always liked Favre and couldn’t root against him no matter how many times he retires and changes his mind. He’s just a fun guy to watch. I guess I’ll have to if the Vikings play the Saints in the NFC Championship. If that happens, it’ll be a good game that either team could win.

I've never heard of that guy.

He must be a new guy to our site. He’s certainly not one of the regulars. I’ll have to go find what he posted over there. I haven’t yet read all the posts on that Vikings vs. Saints fanpost on CSC. If he’s using inappropriate language or stupid stuff like that, Saintsational will remove him. He usually doesn’t tolerate that stuff. Most guys over there are smart enough to not flame on fans of other teams and most recognize the Vikings as a great team worthy of respect. My advice is to just ignore the idiots.

Yeah, that’s true, we’ve had our bad eggs too…. but I will say this much for the DN on this account; when our idiots step over the line, you’ll see other Vikings fans put the kabosh on it. No one here is afraid to stand up to foolishness, it’s one of the things that makes the DN a very good blog to participate in.

As for the Bears fans…. unfortunately I have to agree. They’ve been so bad that their SBN blog owner had to be banned from the DN. On the plus side, we’ve needed much less Febreeze around here since then.

Let’s hope thing things stay fairly friendly between the Vikings fans and the Saints fans, that way I can still feel good about liking the Saints whenever they aren’t playing the Vikings :)

I say if we’re going to invest in the future, it should be at CB. Bush would not replace Taylor, if we lose Taylor. And, we already replicate his gifts elsewhere. I’m hoping Young is ready to step into the #2 RB role next year, and that we can secure our (long term needs at) offensive right guard and and CB. Not to mention, we may need to spend this off season debating the QB position once again.

I think you're onto something...

Bush would expand the passing game from the backfield, but he would limit the run production from the backfield in turn. Much of Taylor’s third down production comes from the fact that he is a duel threat; he is just as likely to catch a screen or swing pass as he is to run a draw or take it off tackle. We need an asset like that on third down. He doesn’t make the Vikings better this year, you have to doubt he would next.

by LoveHate on Dec 2, 2009 1:31 PM CST reply actions

For the money Bush would want...

Let’s face it, Reggie Bush could still pick up a nice contract anywhere he goes, probably close to the value of Chester Taylor. So, if it came down to Reggie or Chester, whom would you pick? I would go with Taylor. He will probably be asking for less money, and he is no doubt more solid on 3rd down, where we need him.

‘And the wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws’.

Was about to say the same thing

Bush would be leaving the Saints because of money (dumb) Minnesota even with Taylor leaving won’t have the cap space to sign him and the other people we will need next year. (CB’s, safeties, D Linemen and maybe a QB)

I think going after Bush would be a back wards step for this organization. Plus I don’t like the way he runs he’s to much of a dang pansy. Although this year he has decided to hit people…

Gigantic draft bust still overrated

He was drafted #2 as a running back. He hasn’t put up respectable numbers. Picking him was a bust. The Saints are 11-0 despite drafting Reggie Bush. Bush is very interested in partying and living the high life. I question his dedication to football.

My preference would be to keep Chester Taylor, or find somebody like him.

2nd the keep Chester.

I would keep Chester, deep six Berrian, let some of the other F.A.’s go and use the money to resign Chester if he wants to stay. Of course, that would also matter on how much Berrian would count against the cap if we cut him. With the emergence of Rice and Harvin, they can easily take over #1 and #2.

Keep Berrian

The only veteran wide receiver we have other than Greg Lewis.

by medicineball on Dec 2, 2009 10:38 PM CST up reply actions

Being a veteran is not enough

I like BB, I think he’s a good WR and an asset to the team, but he has some liabilities too;

He was brought in to be the #1 WR, the ‘speedster’, but he hasn’t turned out to have the speed. He’s a great route-runner, he takes advantage of opponents mis-steps to get open because he doesn’t have the speed to break-away from anyone. He’s a good #2 WR, not a #1.

He’s fragile… and this one really hurts. The guy pulls a hammy just running down the sideline, un-touched. He’s been hurt about as much as he’s been healthy, and we just need a healthier WR in the #1 slot.

Finally…. BB was VERY expensive. Letting him go and replacing him with someone faster, and younger, would free up a lot of cap space. Or, if a veteran is critical, let’s see who’s available in FA next year, I’m sure someone suitable will turn up.

Then we would need some other veteran WR that runs good routes

and has good character. Is there a less expensive version of BB available? Did you see what Antonio Bryant is getting paid this year? We need a veteran starting WR with good character and work habits like BB so that we keep our mostly young WR on track. Maybe BB is paid a lot, but so are a lot of wide receivers around the league.

Fitzgerald, the Man Who Should've Been in Purple

Boldin. He’s pretty impressive, but we already have Rice :)))

No, the one we want is the one who SHOULD have been a Viking to begin with; Larry Fitzgerald.

Fitz is one of Minny’s native sons, his dad’s a Viking sports writer and he used to be the waterboy for the ‘90s Vikings. I read about how he used to bring the player’s cars around for them, and he got to talk with Denny Green and Cris Carter. That’s why, when Denny went to AZ and he saw Fitz was available, he knew what he was getting when he snatched him up.

Unfortunately, Fitz re-signed with AZ last year, so he’s out of reach.

by Grime on Dec 4, 2009 9:10 AM CST up reply actions

LOL! I wish!

No, I’m saying we really do need a #1 WR, someone who can outrun most of the secondaries out there. A Maclin-type WR… The Vikings need to keep their eyes open for him. It won’t be Fitz, or Bolden, both those guys are locked up, and I don’t know who’s going to be available come FA time this year…

I'd like to keep Chester but...

The main reason Chester would probably leave, besides money, is that he may want another chance to be the starter while he’s young enough to handle the load.

I agree with letting Berrian go to save some money, depending on how much that would save us. Rice has shown as much leadership quality as BB has. We have Greg Lewis for age and young talent (speed) in Jaymar and Renaud (It’s too early to look up the correct spelling of their names) looking at the #3 spot.

As for catching the ball out of the backfield and/or taking a few snaps to give Adrian a breather, Since we kept both Young and Ian Johnson (practice squad) the coaching staff must have some faith in them as assets.

A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.

The thing is, I’ve seen no indication that CT is that self-centered that he’d leave a good situation which extends his life-expectancy in the NFL, just to have the starting position on a less talented team.

I could be wrong tho….

I do agree that we have some great youngsters waiting in the wings, and Albert Young looked very good in the pre-season. And we still have Ian Johnson on the practice squad.

Our offense isn’t really designed to have a ton of Reggie Bush type players. I mean we already have a very explosive offense I don’t really see the value in adding another running back.

by Grape Drank on Dec 2, 2009 6:27 PM CST reply actions

Bush is a poor man's Percy...

taken ~20 spots earlier in the draft. Reggie should be a receiver in the NFL doing the occasional motion into the backfield to catch a dump-off or something on third down. Unfortunately, he’s too big of a wimp to go across the middle or run as hard as an NFL RB has to in order to be successful between the tackles.

Besides, we already have a better Reggie Bush who has proven to be just as if not more versatile and much, much tougher. To seal the deal, give me migranes over knee problems any day.

by drew10 on Dec 2, 2009 6:33 PM CST reply actions

Also, as has already been mentioned...

Any potential money used for Reggie Bush would be better used on re-signing Chester, only I think I’ve read that he wants a chance to be the main ball carrier somewhere? If that’s the case, the man is totally entitled to do that as he has been nothing but perfect for us as a Viking despite being in Adrian’s shadow.

by drew10 on Dec 2, 2009 6:39 PM CST up reply actions

No Reggie, Please

I like Reggie Bush but not for the Vikings. He isn’t a running back. His production is basically a receiver. Harvin already fills this role. Sidney Rice was a late 2nd round pick and Chester Taylor was a 6th round pick. A great team like the Vikings doesn’t have to pay huge amounts for such free agent players anymore. They should continue to draft and develop them. I keep waiting to see Albert Young this year but so far its all Chester.
The Vikes won’t keep Chester. He is 30 years old. The magic age for running backs to decline. Some team will pay him that needs a good running back ( Seattle or Kansas City). He has been a great Viking. I hope he gets a great contract. But the Vikes will have little trouble filling the shoes of a back up running back. I suspect this year we will draft two running backs in the draft. But who knows. Albert might be ready Now.

by lifelongvike on Dec 3, 2009 7:40 AM CST reply actions

You don't want Reggie

As a Saints fan who hasn’t given up on him just yet, I don’t think he would fit well into your system. I wouldn’t believe that Yahoo article about the Saints cutting him loose this offseason anyway. The d-bag writer of that article is jumping to conclusions and has proven in the past that he is not a reliable source. Yes, the Saints have no intention of paying Reggie the $8 million he stands to get next year, so they have said for some time now that once the season ends they want to renegotiate. Sean Payton still sees him as a valuable weapon. It’s possible that Reggie and his agent won’t agree, but I think that it’s unlikely that they and the team won’t agree on something to keep him here for a little less moolah.

Mostly, it will all depend on the Saints evaluation of Reggie’s health and his ability to stay healthy throughout an entire season. He has been injury-prone most of his career and he knows it. I can’t see him demanding they pay him $8 million next year and getting released. Certainly, no other team would want to trade for him, considering his injury history and price tag.

To back up All Day, either stick with Chester Taylor or find another young RB hungry for success on a great team like the Vikings. There will be plenty out there once the season ends.

You’re pretty much on target with CT, the man’s just a perfect fit in the offensive scheme in Minnesota. I think the Vikings need to make the effort to retain him.

I haven’t been watching Reggie Bush enough to track is IR pattern, but I noticed that he isn’t doing kick and punt returns this year. He was smokin’ hot on returns last year (and burnt us pretty badly!), I’m surprised the Saints aren’t letting him reprise that role.

He is returning punts

When healthy, he has been the primary punt returner. You haven’t heard anything about it because he hasn’t had a good return all year. He hasn’t come close to breaking one like he did last season. I’m thinking his surgically repaired knee has reduced his quickness just enough to make him less elusive.

If we lose Chester, we need to bring in someone just like him

A reliable blocker and receiver that plays smart and can still get some tough yards rushing. I really hope we can keep Chester next year, but I also realize he could start for half the teams in the NFL.

by Eric J. Thompson on Dec 3, 2009 11:00 AM CST reply actions

Exactly

We gave CT 3 million a year to be our starter. He has done well. We didn’t know AP would be available to us the next year. It’s impossible for a team to pay two running backs the kind of money these two are worth. We need a younger running back to replace CT for two reasons.
Age= less production in running backs.
A young up and comer protects the Vikes if injury or contract dispute develops with AP

The real value in CT comes from his extremely gifted ability to pick up the blitz. He has saved Farve on many occasions on third and long by blocking the blitzer. This comes from experience and is not easily replaced. When CT is gone you will see AP in more often on 3rd down.

by lifelongvike on Dec 3, 2009 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

Age not as much of a concern with CT

As far as age is concerned, I would look more towards the rushing attempts per season. Look at when Larry Johnson formerly of the Chiefs broke down, it was after his 400+ rushing attempt season. Chester Taylor got the most carries of his career is 2006, when he rushed 303 times. He then rushed 157 times in 07 and 101 in 08. Main point is, Chester Taylor has very fresh legs that the majority of NFL runningbacks, especially those in their 30s, do not.

This free agency class, running back is not really a premium position. Due to injury concerns, I would rank CT higher than Ronnie Brown or Willie Parker. Darren Sproles is not a franchise RB, and never will be. Lendale White and Cadillac Williams both pretty much suck the big one. All in all, I give CT the nod as the best free agent RB who will be ready to contribute come day one. Seahawks need an RB desperately, and Chester Taylor has the capabilites to come in and start for a team such as them. I think CT walks, starts somewhere else, and has a couple of productive seasons.

All we need to do is have Brett Favre master the statue of liberty play to Ian Johnson, and run that into the ground.

Thomas Jones

I heard his contract is expiring after this year. 8,000+ career yards and still going strong. He might be a good option if we can’t keep Chester Taylor.

by medicineball on Dec 4, 2009 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

Don't Know About That

Thomas Jones has 2188 career rushes in the NFL thus far, and now is in the middle of his 10th season in the league. While he has been a solid veteran, I see his production at this point starting to slip (he’s on pace to finish with almost 320 touches this year) He has reached the point where RBs truly to start to fade into obscurity. Given his past performance, he would demand more money than I think the Vikes should dish out for that position in the offseason.

CT going to greener pastures this offseason has less to do with a paycheck or playing on a championship caliber team. How many times since the drafting of AP have you heard a comment about how CT could be a starting running back on basically any other pro football team? He wants to prove himself, show that he is capable still of being the one who drives the offense for a team.

*Edit: I looked up on the free agency market for 2010 via walterfootball.com, and T-Jones is under contract until 2011. Leon Washington is the Jets RB who will be a free agent after the season. If we try to grab Washington, we’re in essence grabbing a poor man’s Reggie Bush… or more accurately, a poor man’s poor man version of Percy Harvin.
