Ask Revenge of the Birds

Hey guys, Andrew from Revenge Of The Birds here to discuss our Sunday night match up and anything else you want to know about the Cardinals. Yes I am worried because our gray-beard may not play and while Matt Leinart showed some promise last week, the offense is noticeably weaker without Warner in the game. Any questions you have will be answered as quick as possible and I'm sure some other Cardinal fans will stop by to answer as well. Let's hope for a good game on Sunday.

Hey Andrew

With the recent announcement from Kurt Warner that he thought about lying about his head injury because he did not want his team second guessing the decision to not play, and the critcism that Hines Ward layed upon Ben Roethlisberger about not toughing it out, how have the folks over at Revenge of the Birds been feeling about Warner not playing last week and the timing of the decision?

Do you also feel that the team will wait until game day to make the decision on who starts? Finally, which QB has been taking the most snaps this week in preparation for the game?

Thanks

Matt and Kurt have been taking the snaps with the 1st team offense equally

We all assume that Warner is seriously bothered by the symptoms and he would play if he could. No one second-guesses him and we want him to be 100% when he takes the field.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Warner is definitely playing

Nothing can stop Warner from getting out on the field. This is the biggest game on the schedule so far for the Cardinals, and everybody on the team will be there and playing in desperation mode.

pick your poison

Teams have really been concentrating on stopping Purple Jesus over the last few weeks, this has left huge passing lanes for the silver fox. What do you want your team to emphisize more on, stopping the run or stopping the pass?
Thanks

so you're basically asking would we rather be shot in the back or would we prefer to see it coming?

I guess my answer would be…..I’d prefer not to get shot.

In all seriousness the Vikings are one of the rare offenses that are dangerously strong in the running and passing game. That of course means that you can’t solely focus on one or the other and still have any hope of winning. That being said I think they’re defensive game plan might depend on who play’s QB. If Warner is under center then I would bet that the defense is able to take a few more gambles (ie focusing on the run and blitzing) because they’re less afraid of getting into a shoot-out. If Leinart is under center then the gameplan might be more conservative (ie always keeping a safety or two deep and giving up more runs and short passes underneath) because they know that Leinart won’t put up as many points.

I just posted a story on this but my best bet is us having our best game yet

If they Cardinals can play smart and get turnovers, that will be our only hope.

thanks Andrew....

Appreciate the time you’re taking this week to answer queries/provide feedback from a Bird’d perspective….

Now on to the question(s) I have…..

(1) How do see your secondary when it comes to matching up against the Vikings WR/TEs?

(2) Will the Cards D be able to adequately cover the Vikes WR/TEs if they DO put more guys in the box to stop AD?

(3) How do you feel your O line overall matches up against our front four on the D side? Any concerns or weak spots we may see our guys focus on/try to exploit (I am sure both sides will be watching MUCHO game films this week!

Again thanks for stopping by and providing some feedback! Good luck on Sunday (not TOO much, I do hope you will lose lol), and here’s to hoping no major injury on either side nor bad ref calls that can screw the game up for either side…SKOL!!!!

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

I'll let someone else take 1 & 2

As far as how our OL will handle your DL, I’ll say that I think the best gameplan would be pray daily. Simply put, our front five has zero chance against your front four. To make matters worse our LT, Mike Gandy, might miss the game or at least play but not be 100% (so bet on Jared Allen picking up at least one sack). The Cardinals, for whatever reason, don’t like to keep a tight end in to help thier tackles but I’ve gotta think they’ll do that this week. Otherwise we’ll be simply overmatched.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 3, 2009 10:16 AM CST up reply actions

No problem

1) I think that we will have our problems because most of your receivers are quick. I’d imagine Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, easily the fasted DB in the league would cover your quickest receiver. Bryant McFadden is a physical DB so he’d need have to jam whoever he covers at the line and disrupt their routes. After that I’m worried because our DB depth is thin. Adrian Wilson will likely cover Shancoe(sp), which he can have trouble against good receiving tight ends.

2) If we focus on AD then Favre will find more open recievers. i think the Cardinals need to focus on stacking the box, but also bringing heavy blitzes when Favre throws.

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

This has basically been the strategy used by opponents so far this season. The Bears did exactly that.

Re: Shank (see how I avoided the spelling), he’s been lining up as a receiver some, I think to see if a LB stays with him. Once again, see Bears game.

Thanks for doing this, Andrew

1. Beanie or Hightower, who is carrying the load at this point, and can they make an impact against the Vikes run defense?

2. Can you effectively shut down the run game or the pass game?

3. How far into the post season do you see the Cardinals going this year, and can they compete against New Orleans and/or Minnesota if they have to go on the road in the post season?

"We're used to Favre-a-palooza now. We're engulfed in Favre-a-palooza. It's not even Favre-a-palooza anymore. He's family now."

by Ted Glover on Dec 2, 2009 5:20 PM CST reply actions

1 – Good question with no clear cut answer. Hightower is the starter in the sense that he is on the field for the first play of the game but after that Whiz simply rides the hot hand. Beanie had been getting more carries leading up to the Titans game but an early fumble sent him to the bench for a while. Either way they’re carries will likely be in the 8-12 range and if we can manage to grind out 80 yards on the ground, I’ll be impressed.

2 – Can anyone effectively shut down both?

3 – That’s an impossible question but I’ll simply say that if the Cardinals play their best game, they can beat anyone. It helps that the Vikes and Saints play in a dome so I don’t think that simply playing on the road eliminates their chances of winning. It’s also worth noting that we have a better record on the road this year than at home.

Right now we don't have a back carrying the load but

I’d say Wells will have the better game, and that’s assuming the Cardinals don’t abandon the run. Wells is much more quicker and explosive and against your D, that would be better to have.

will the Cardinals take it out on the Fudge Packing Packers for that embarrassing loss in the 3rd preseason game this year?

I sure hope soooooooooooo! Even if you guys have sown up a playoff spot by week 17!

Thanks for doing this, Andrew

I haven’t had much of a chance to see the Cardinals this year (other than a bit on Redzone). Looking at their record and the scores, from the outside it looks like a very up and down kind of season. Does it seem that way watching them as well? Is there a lack of consistency week to week?

They seem to have a much better run defense than pass defense, which is also what I’ve been hearing all season. Do you think they’ll take their chances on their standard run D against Minnesota, or will they stack the line as other teams have and take their chances against Favre?

by Migrant lurker on Dec 2, 2009 8:05 PM CST reply actions

Inconsistency has been that name of the game in Arizona ever since they’ve been here pretty much. The positive thing is that they’re good more often than their bad these days.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 3, 2009 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

Well to start the season they were inconsistent

But they’ve won 6 out of the last 8 games so that’s saying something. The run D was very good at the start of the season but has faltered since then. I’m hoping they get their act together on Sunday ; )

Part of it is because of injuries.

They shut down some great RBs like Maurice Jones-Drew and Frank Gore before a couple of the starters got hurt.

Question

Last year Tarvaris Jackson ripped up the Cards for 4 TDs, much to the delight of the sea of Vikings fans in attendance.

Has the Cardinals secondary improved from last year and do you think the Cardinals can contain Brett Favre?

by EasternVike on Dec 2, 2009 8:49 PM CST reply actions

As long as Favre only throws at DRC's side of the field.

by JoeCB1991 on Dec 2, 2009 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

True, Favre did have a really good game with the Jets but

We were on the road in the rain, and Kurt Warner’s turnovers padded that total. DRC was a rook last year and has since improved.

It could go either way at thats been part of our problem this year

We could limit Favre and he could have the worst game of the season, or he could go off and throw 5 TDs, but I don’t see anything in between.

What a refreshing post

For the Card’s defense to be successful do you think that they will continue a trend that has been used against Minnesota and stack 8 or more in the box OR will they have enough film of the Vikings to realize that Brett Farve did actually come out of retirement and play for the Vikes.

Adrian Peterson...Beast Mode

by Grape Drank on Dec 3, 2009 1:21 AM CST reply actions

It's tough to say.

I think if the Cardinals put more defenders in the box, it will be to slow Peterson, but if the Vikings pass more, they’ll use the defenders for all out blitzes. Not blitzing last week killed us against the Titans and I’m hoping the Cardinals learned.

How will your O-Line stop the defensive ends of the Vikes?

I see a weakness in your offensive line. They seem to rely on Kurt Warner getting rid of the ball quickly as opposed to holding their blocks for him. Do you think it will be safe for either of your quarterbacks this Sunday? The DE’s of Minnesota have been so tough this year. What’s your plan to stop them?

We know about your offensive weapons...what about the D?

Hey Andrew, most of us are well aware of Warner, Hightower, Beanie, and your trio of top-tier WRs (thanks in most part to fantasy football I’m sure…thanks Larry!). But what about your defense? From what I’ve seen of them this year, it’s been pretty streaky.

One one hand, I’ve seen your corners making a lot of big plays. On the other, I’ve seen them give up a ton of yards at times. Who are the main players to watch on the Cardinals defense, and how do you feel about their performance thus far in 2009?

by Eric J. Thompson on Dec 3, 2009 11:52 AM CST reply actions

DRC, Antrel Rolle, Darnell Dockett, Adrian Wilson, Calais Campbell

Those are the guys you probably want to look for the most.

one thing that hopefully plays out is that they like to use the "bend but don't break" motto

We give up a ton of yards (24th in the league) but we’re pretty decent at keeping opponents out of the endzone (13th). Names you should know though (and hopefully they’ll show up)…

 - Darnell Dockett – Believe me he’ll have a good game. He think he’s the best DT in the league (even though he’s now an end) and with the Williams Wall in his backyard he’ll have some motivation.
 - Adrian Wilson – Best safety you might have never heard of.
 - DRC – Best young corner in the game.
 - Karlos Dansby – Will be the best LB on the free agent market this offseason.

I’m obviously over selling a bit but those are the faces of this D.

Be careful....to a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

by Bezekira on Dec 3, 2009 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

They have been streaky

Watch out for Darnell Dockett – Had 3 sacks last week and 6 in the last 4 weeks. Can disrupt a lot of plays

DRC – Very fast young corner and likes to go after the ball. If Brett puts one up in the air he can make a play.

Antrel Rolle – He’s not the best free safety in the league but if he picks off a pass, he’s a threat to take it back.

Calais Campbell – A young player you’ve never heard of that can play with a high motor and he’s 6’8

What? I didn't break it, I was just testing its durability, and then I placed it in the woods becuase it's made out of wood and I just thought he should be with his family.

Thanks guys!

I would imagine that the Vikings will double Dockett since we have a first-year starter at Center, which may open things up for the rest of your d-line. Hopefully we can keep Dansby guessing whether he needs to help cover Shiancoe or chase after AP all day.

And as for your corners—if Favre decides to have a “Gunslinger” flashback, I’d imagine this would be the worst team to do it against. Sounds like your secondary will make us pay for any errant throws.

Should be a good game; I’m excited for Sunday night!

Purple Presence

I’m surprised that no one has brought this up yet but what is the expectation of fan turnout for the game?

I flew out to Phoenix for last years game and conservatively I would estimate that 1/3 of the fans in attendance were wearing purple. Heck even the port-a-johns outside the stadium were purple.

Prior to this season, I was talking with my buddy (who is from AZ) to see if another trip west for this years game was feasible and he said that this year the Vikings game was in a “Protect the Nest” package. That meant that if you wanted to buy individual game tickets for the Vikings game, you had to buy some additional low selling tickets.

I know that the Vikings do the same type of thing for Packer home games in an attempt to keep the vermin out but I’m surprised that the Cardinals would enact such a policy for a non division opponent.

Norm Green still sucks!

I think he will play next season.

Or he might use up the last year of his contract to stay on the sidelines and help Leinart get used to starting again.

Either way, I think after his contract is up he will be done playing in the NFL. He doesn’t want to get hurt too much since he has 7 kids and he is thinking about what he wants to do after he retires along with the crapload of charity work he does already.
