Is Darrell Bevell a bad OC?

I'm being sarcastic by asking a question, fyi. I've never liked him and certainly never had confidence in his abilities as an OC.  He's, imho, one of those OC's that's great early and mid-season but terrible late season and post season after there's enough game film to watch.  He doesnt adjust and it seems like he out thinks himself.

After watching tonights game I came away with the impression that we lost because 1. we were the visitors playing on grass in open air and 2.  Darrell Bevell called a really stupid game.

1.  3rd and 1:  we are a power run team, they were the 27th ranked rush defense.  Pound right up the gut right?  No, lets toss play.  *facepalm*

2.  3rd and 5 just outside the edge of field goal range:  Screen pass to the left?  No, drop back pass and all recievers going on intermediate routs......*facepalm*

3.  An entire first half of 1 on 1 against Julius Peppers.....*facepalm*

4.  Brett's holding the ball a bit and the CB's are playing off.  Quick slant, Quick screen then a delayed handoff?  No, lets keep taking 5 step drops.

It was excruciating.  Thoughts from the crowd?

It's Chilly's fault!

I’m kidding. Not sure it was the play-calling…
execution sucked… mostly on the line. something is ‘up’, wish we knew how to fix it.

I BELIEVE...

yes.. bu they just seem sluggish on grass

..i agree on bevell, always thought other teams had much more ingenuity on plays and play calling.. but that being said..we just were not executing today.. i cant help but think weare a step too slow on grass.. if we face phi on road in playoffs (now a real possibility)..we are over and done..

Yes Chilly sucks

Unbelieveable conservative play calling and let Peppers control game.. Missed tackles and dropped passes not his fault…Rest is

by WVVikings on Dec 20, 2009 10:46 PM CST reply actions

Well

Multiple defenders in the backfield on every play doesn’t exactly allow you to do anything anyway.

It all starts upfront. The line got it handed to them tonight.

by medicineball on Dec 20, 2009 10:51 PM CST reply actions

Hold on

Let me take that back. Through most of the game, Julius Peppers was not double-teamed. That is a mistake that falls on the OC and HC.

I had anticipated seeing Kleinsasser doubling-up on Peppers for every offensive snap. Why can fans see this clearly and our coaching staff not understand it?

by medicineball on Dec 21, 2009 8:45 AM CST up reply actions

Poorly called game

I agree with you… We are a power-running game and should have pursued it. The OC, I think, got scared and tried to rely on the passing game and Carolina saw it. AP could have done better with what he has given. Peppers was the worst threat and we didn’t double team him at all. McKinney is good but really, they had double teams all over Jared! Poorly coached game that will contribute to ANOTHER one and done!

Correction

The Vikings USED TO BE a power-running team.

Everyone keeps calling for that to be ‘pursued’, and blaming the failure on not running the ball enough.

But when you run the ball, and you come up with squat, you have to do something else. That’s what the Vikings did.

Oh, and McKinnie no evidence of being 'good'

Average at best.

This isn’t the only game where he’s been handled, or where he’s failed to give Favre time, or where he failed to pursue the play.

We are not a power running team...

we’re not even a running team. When is the last game AP carried the ball more than 20 times? It was clear early that this was a game to stick with the run until we established something. Chilly and Bevell were too stupid to realize that, even after halftime “adjustments”. I think we go in with a specific plan and we just stick with it all the way down the toilet if that’s where it goes. I agree entirely with your assessment of Bevell’s playcalling tonight… what a friggin moron.

it seems like

the Vikings have gone away from the high percentage plays and throws that were working all season. They have also gotten away from the concept of staying ahead of the chains. No need to go deep on 3rd and 4.

Bevell and Favre

I wonder if there’s some sort of subconscious thing going on with Bevell putting everything into Favre’s hands. Bevell was a large part of pushing for Favre to come here, so he obviously was on the “QB is the missing piece” boat.

When the going even gets slightly tough, it seems like we abandon the run and make Favre throw for the win. Maybe it’s just his subconscious thinking Favre will make everything alright, so he keeps calling pass plays.

AD is one of those backs who wears down a defense and gets strong as the game goes on. 12 carries doesn’t cut it.

Bevell's playcalling called into question NOW?

i understand what you’re all saying but this is the first time i’ve heard Bevell’s play-calling being questioned. at 11-3…i mean…what about the 11 wins?

by belairjeff on Dec 21, 2009 9:27 AM CST reply actions

well it has to be something right?

by iseepurplepeople on Dec 21, 2009 11:29 AM CST up reply actions

Could it be that DCs are figuring our tendencies out?

We should be able to do something different when it’s clear they are shutting down what we’re doing but we aren’t doing that. Under high pressure, and when the OLine clearly can’t handle the pass rush, dropping back and waiting for an open downfield receiver doesn’t seem like the best plan. Harvin is excellent at turning the short ones into long gains but last night I see him on fly patterns.

I can’t believe that with a great QB, RB, and receivers, we can’t do something against just about anybody. Who can we blame that on, if it isn’t the coaches?

by Bodysuit Man on Dec 21, 2009 5:21 PM CST reply actions

I’d love to go with this notion but there’s more to it than that.

They should be able to figure out what the Vikings are doing, and STILL not be able to counter it.

They still only have 11 guys out there, to the Vikings 11 guys. That gives them 1 extra man in play when the QB is out of play. We’re almost talking 1 on 1 here, if our guys are such super-studs, why can’t they cope?

If our O-line put up even average play, AP would rampage through the opposition on every single play. But they don’t.

fire him

another game same bad play calling. i thought pro teams had more than 3 plays and at least 3 different ones every quarter.

by illinoisviking on Dec 21, 2009 8:22 PM CST reply actions

honestly...

I never figured out what they were doing bringing him in as an OC. He was a decent QB coach but he really didn’t even do that for all that long. He had NO experience as an OC or even an assistant HC or anything like that. Maybe that is what Brad wanted though…someone raw that he could tell what to do. If that is the case, anything that happens is even MORE childress’s fault.

by TrevorR on Dec 23, 2009 10:02 AM CST reply actions

Well I wouldn't shed a tear

Seeing him go. I might even dance a bit. Or a lot..

A good OC would do wonders for this team. The question is, does Childress see himself as the OC and the real OC just being his assistant.

Tough call.

by Grime on Dec 23, 2009 12:41 PM CST up reply actions

We've been poor...

… with the play-calling for years now. We just seem to lack invention, more or less winning on the strength of the roster alone. If firing Bevell and bringing in an OC who can scheme creatively takes us to the next level I’m all for it. Next season, the Packers will have done a year in to their transition to the 3-4 and if they draft well, they could prove to be a mighty tough obstacle for the predictable offence we’ve been running.

by ViolentSilence on Dec 24, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

Hate to be the santa in your stocking but

didn’t Brett come to the Vikes because of his relationship to Bevelle and liking the offensive system? Isn’t a system adjustable by the QB at the line? Isn’t there more to a team than a couple bad performances on the field?

Relax
We are 11-3
We are NFC north champions
We are in the Playoffs
