Not bashing, just asking...
if anyone else heard something about Chili wanting to bench Brett in the 3rd quarter? This loss cannot be placed entirely on Favre's shoulders. His receivers couldn't hold on to the ball and he was being terrorized by Peppers for most of the night (don't know why they didn't send Saucer over to help out). My question is why would Chili come out and say this after the fact? He is the head coach and if he felt Tarvaris or Sage could add a spark than why didn't he just go ahead and bench Brett? Not saying I would have agreed with this, but it seems like he is doing more harm than good by coming out and saying this now. What do you all think? The guy is supposedly a psyche major or something and maybe he said this to try and light a fire under the whole team?

All I can figure
is that Chilli was trying to pull Favre for a play or two after one of the tougher poundings from Peppers. I did think Jackson would have done well in that game. Jackson scrambles well and can throw on the run.
I saw a stat the other day that...
Brett Favre has an astounding 150+ passer rating on bootleg plays (pretty sure it was on the season). Success on a bootleg is directly related to a successful running game. The Vikes aren’t running the ball well, limiting everything based on playaction.
we're baiting the game film...

The Vikings were up 7-6 at the time
Kudos to Chilly for wanting to protect his QB..but also Kudos go out to Brett Favre to tell Chilly no and to gut it out when Peppers was thoroughly p*ss pounding him all night
It's Chilis job to make the tough decisions
Don’t talk about it. Be about it.
Favre's press conference
Apparently in his post-game press conference, Favre said Childress wanted to take him out in the 3rd quarter because of the hits he was taking. Favre refused. Childress didn’t talk about it.
Expect the media to blow this completely out of proportion.
That's because the Packers suck

Three differences....
We beat you with that QB TWO times this year….
We are the NFC North champs for the second year in a row….
We did not lose to Tampa (HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!)….
Therefore cannot sound like Packer fans!
Much more whining and lamentation required for that!

Except those who didn't play
Like Tavaris Jackson.

Yeah, right.
T-Jack would have made all the difference in that game.

Maybe he would have
Chilly lacked the testicular fortitude to make that decision stick, so we’ll never know.

you think having tj in the fourth quarter would have been worse than 20-0?
by iseepurplepeople on Dec 21, 2009 2:17 PM CST up reply actions
I think Favre is a better QB
Your argument is like me asking if you thought making it 40-0 with T-Jack in the 4th would have been better.

not really because 40-0 isn’t really worse than 20-0. both result in a loss.

No, it is
You are trying to say T-Jack could have pulled that one out. I’ve seen T-Jack play, very unlikely it would result in a win.

Wrong again
We didn’t win, but that’s not saying he couldn’t.
i’ve seen tj play and the only thing either of us knows is that favre couldn’t pull it out.I’ve seen him play too, he isn’t good under pressure. Favre still > T-Jack.

It's not an issue of whether T-Jack is better than Favre
T-Jack is DIFFERENT. T-Jack is much more mobile than Favre and brings a different aspect to the offense.
T-Jack was better equipped to get away from Peppers as the O-line collapsed.

I don't think so
That game was entirely the offensive line.
AD had no holes, at all. Favre had no time before Julius Peppers ate him. The defense played well for half an hour then the time of possession disparity caught up to them.
If the Vikings had blocked Julius Peppers they would have won that game.
DING DING DING!!!
O-Line all the way…
We’ve seen our Running game suffer this year because the OLine can’t create the holes that get AP his first 5 yards.
Thankfully, we developed a passing game to overcome this ‘little’ problem.
We’ve run up against 2 teams that can STOP our run and PRESSURE our QB at will (Peppers earned his paycheck last night)… and guess what?
Failure to Launch. 2 Big Losses. (I’ll even throw the Steelers loss on this pile – but we looked better then)
Do we meet any other teams that can do both on Defense to us the rest of the season?
IF we meet the Cardinals in post-season… we better have an answer. (We won’t meet the Panthers, so there’s that)
Something needs to happen on the OLine… They need to execute better.
I BELIEVE...

Not only O-line, but coaching adjustments
Kleinsasser should help blocking Peppers, not catching passes. It’s too late in the season to be cute. It’s time for smash mouth. And the O-line got it last night.
But the frustrating thing (avoided a F-word there) is that the coaches never adjusted, they never brought a back or TE in on a regular basis to double Peppers. Like other teams to do Jared every week. (avoided another F-word there).
How effing stupid can coaches be at the pro level?
Favre said that Chilly tried to bench him in the 3rd Q
However, he also said that he felt he could try harder, to turn it around and win the game.
I give Favre a lot of credit for not being a damned quitter. For not giving up and whining and crying about it, he took responsibility for his part. But sometimes they have your number and you need to give it a break.
But this was Chilly’s decision to make and we’ll never know for sure if it would have helped, or not. Chilly failed to be the Head Coach.
What could have been the outcome? The Panther’s weren’t game-planning for a highly mobile QB like Jackson, Peppers would have been at least partially nullified. Things could have been quite different.
I think Favre needs to learn when to back down and accept that he doesn’t run the team, and Chilly needs to dig deep, find a ball, and make his decisions stick.

Decision was wrong
Benching Favre was not the answer. Blocking Peppers was the answer and Chilly never adressed it.. Replacing McKinnie was not the answer, unless he was hurt. Putting Kleinsasser over there to help was the answer….That was clear, very clear to see for everyone, except Chilly

’Sasser on the left, Dugan on the right, and with a 7 man front line, AP might have seen some daylight, too.

Seriously...
How does Peppers not get the attention J.A. gets game in and game out? Why no in game adjustment. I get expecting everyone to do their jobs, but come on, at some point you have to realize no one on your team is up to the task.

If we had committed to run the ball we would have won.
Sure we might have gone 3-and-out, 4 or 5-and-out (um… actually we did!), but we would have taken some time off the clock and made sure our D stayed fresh enough to play. We held them to 6 points for 3 quarters. If each possession had used up 3 mins more then that’s a final score.
More importantly, we WOULD have eventually found success, then the more open intermediate stuff would have been there, and we would have had the rythym to execute. This was a great opportunity to re-establish our run game and we failed because we kept trying to force a higher skilled finesse scheme into a smash-mouth game.
Double sad
That Chilly can’t enforce a decision and that Favre isn’t willing give someone else a chance to play, even a few series, at this point in his career.
I hope they talk it out this week and decide who the coach is going to be.
A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.
I wonder if Chilli wasn't just trying to get some people fired up.
Not saying you’re wrong, but Chilli is smart enough I wouldn’t ignore the possibility it was about motivation.
Especially with the "beating" term
Get the O-line fired up?
One can only hope.
But the corollary is when somebody incredibly talented is killing your O-line, you bring in help. Like Jared has faced most of the season.
How hard of a coaching decision is that?
That is what troubles me most.
Chili is supposed to be the Head Coach.
Meaning he has final say. I think he needs to grow a pair. I know he needs to grow a pair.
just sayin' a thing
I was quite aware that the wheels of this dream season might be a loose lug-nut from popping off…but that’s just from being burned over the decades as a fan o’ the Vikes.
Nevertheless, it has been a great season – one of the best! We have a really entertaining team this year, on both sides of the ball. And as an added relief, Longwell missed a FG yesterday -and he’d been soooo amazingly accurate, I really wanted him to miss one late in the regular season…to get that monkey out of the way for the playoffs.
I was really interested in the Cards game…(up into the 3rd) if only to see if this squad could play from behind. Yesterday seemed to show a lack of understanding in how to play in a close game. Those are two things that’ll get tested p.d.q. in the playoffs.
That said, we’ve got a very dangerous team this year. I’m not worried about beats from Pitt, AZ, and Carolina…and it’s an amazing time to be a fan.

He is an idiot. Every coach entering the playoffs hopes he gets the unchanging man. He can be out smarted by a can of soup

Maybe a LITTLE smarter than a can of soup????
For the record, I look at these losses as opportunities…..
Opportunity to learn, to get better, to prepare for the playoffs….
Of course painful, but nonetheless better now than in the playoffs?
A can of soup?? C’mon man…..

Unbelievable Thread
Seriously lets start with the fact that Chilly hired a 40 year old experienced QB who has played remarkably well all year. These men are more equal than a 23 year old rookie and a 50 year old coach. If I’m chilly I am working with Brett, not trying to Jam something down his throat.
Chilly " Hey Brett its cold and our O-Line is not going to get better tonight. You can get hurt out there. We already have the division locked. Lets let T-Jax run around and maybe move the ball that way"
Brett " Coach, This game is still important to this team. I think I know how to win this game. I’m playing unless you demand otherwise"
I really want to thank Chilly for not destroying the relationship that he has with Brett. This team would not be 11-3 without him.

That would be a much better scenario.
Wanting to sit Brett down because of concern for his physical well being rather than sitting him down for performance related issues. I do think Brett did as well as one could expect him to under those circumstances although it probably wouldn’t have hurt to have a much more mobile QB in when the line couldn’t provide the protection Brett needed. It is a much different thing for Brett to say, “Coach I’m OK, I’m not hurt and I want to finish this game”, than having him say “Screw you it’s not my fault we’re sucking and I’ll leave this field over my dead body.”
indeed and I have to think that's how it went down
Because if I don’t think that then this team is really in trouble.
