Around SBN: Odds On Peyton Manning's Next Home Includes Three Teams

Schism between Ole Man Gruff and Scuffy Beard???

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press Favre is "at odds with Childress" Full Story after the Jump.

Star-divide

Brett Favre confirmed what Brad Childress would not. They got into a "heated discussion," according to Favre, when the coach tried to pull the quarterback in the third quarter. Favre had been under a lot of pressure, as the Vikings offensive line struggled. "Brad wanted to go in a different (direction), and I wanted to stay in the game. This will only fuel the perception that Childress can't control Favre. And, despite his contract extension, Childress has to be careful about his credibility with the rest of his players, who are going to be around a lot longer than Favre.

I would assume that if this came from Favre's mouth that it is true. I hope we are NOT seeing Chilly losing this team.

Well just one more devastating pill to swallow after that HORRENDOUS PATHETIC and MIISERABLE Performance last night.

BUT I am a die-hard Vikings fan. They will be right back next week on MNF to .... lets put it this way make Cutler their B*^c#, and DOMINATE DAAA BEARS!

Anbody who thinks that the Vikings are falling off, are going to be lucky if they make it out of the first round and all that other sillyness NEEDS a good smack upside the head. Either you're a fan or you're a Bandwagon Jumper and right now our Wagon could use the room so get off.

Get rid of Chilly

That should have been the 1st option… He wanted to take Favre out to protect him…How abt putting someone over to help out on Peppers to protect Favre..

by WVVikings on Dec 21, 2009 11:14 AM CST reply actions

I hope Childress doesn’t actually think this is HIS team…that would be a grave mistake to make as long as Favre is out there…

by TrevorR on Dec 21, 2009 11:14 AM CST reply actions

And THAT is a huge problem right there

It’s not Favre’s team, it’s Chilly’s team. Chilly is the Head Coach, he has the authority to decide who plays and who rides pine.

But if he doesn’t have the guts to make the decision and make it stick, he’s worthless.

apparently that’s not true. chilly wanted to pull favre, did you see anyone else play qb last night?

favre made the decision to stay in, so he stayed in.

Stop selectively quoting

I also said this about Chilly;

But if he doesn’t have the guts to make the decision and make it stick, he’s worthless.

The HC is in charge of the team, that’s why the call him the Head Coach. If Chilly’s not the HC, maybe we all need to know that. But you need to have some proof before making that charge.

what's the difference?

if he’s not the head coach, then we saw it last night because favre stayed in. if he is the head coach then

he doesn’t have the guts to make the decision and make it stick, he’s worthless.

there’s not selective quoting because there’s no difference.

Head Coach Epic Fail

Because Chilly IS the Head Coach. That’s the position he’s in, that’s what he was hired to do.

You make it sound like Favre’s really in charge of the team, and I don’t buy that. I think this is a case of Chilly not being able to stand up to Favre, and that’s Chilly’s fault and failure.

I’m not trying to be an ass or get a reaction out of you in any way but how do you feel about the Childress extension? I personally think Favre is a lot of the reason you guys are where your at right now. His experience and knowledge has been key for you guys, and I think has been able to hide the fact that Chilly doesn’t usually put very good offensive gameplans together.

by packallday555 on Dec 21, 2009 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

i think the extension sucks. i would have waited til after the season.

by iseepurplepeople on Dec 21, 2009 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

The issue shouldn't even have been in question til after the season was over

I’m with the above two on this one, packallday.

In fact, I was kinda torqued to hear that Chilly had been negotiating for his contract through the regular season, when he should have been focusing on the team and winning games more convincingly.

If he takes the Vikings all the way, then I say give him a 5 year extension. If he doesn’t, shop around.

again, what’s the difference if i make it sound like favres in charge? i blame both of them. favre for not doing what he’s told and chilly for not having the guts to stand up to him.

again what’s the difference who has the head coach title? in the end who over ruled who?

cmon...

Do you think Chilly actually said ‘Brett, old buddy… I want you to sit’?

nah… it was probably more like… ‘Brett, my boys on the line suck and you’re getting hit… I’ll let you sit if you want to… do you want to sit, Mr. Brett’?

Chilly may have brought up letting Mr Brett sit… but I doubt he was thinking it was the best thing for the team.

If this were the case why did they

term the discussion as heated? If Brad did indeed try to bench Brett than it says to me that Brett has a problem with authority. Maybe Brett is the better QB, but TJ is the better soldier.

by KC612 on Dec 21, 2009 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

Brad wanted to go in a different direction and I wanted to stay in the game.

if he wanted to stay in the game, what was the ‘different direction’ brad wanted to go in?

yeah i think chilly wanted him to sit and favre said:

’I’m staying in the game, I’m playing.’

there’s those ‘staying in the game’ words again. why do you think favre keeps saying he wants to stay in the game unless chilly was wanting him to come out?

do you think they were both arguing who wanted him to stay in the game more?

my quotes are lifted directly from the article linked to on the front page.

What's the difference between your job, and your bosses job?

Sure, it’s just a title, but your boss has the ability to sideline you because he has the authority to do so and if you try to buck him, he can call security and enforce it.

If your boss tells you to do a task and you say, ‘Maybe later, I’m busy posting on the DN right now’, he’s not much of a boss. In fact, he’s more of a biatch than boss and he needs to be replaced by someone with the cojones to kick your chair out from under you and put you back on point.

It still exposes our weakness

I am a die hard , but a realist.
First, this O-line is not as good as some want us to believe
2. Chilly should have pulled Favre and should have the communicationskils to do what he needed to do. "Brett, not you fault. We need you for the next games and right now your line isn’t protecting you. Let’s put the kid in and tell him to wildcat, shake some things up and let him run the rest of the day. Meet with me Monday so we can dicuss things and then gather this team together and tell people some things.
-Favre wanted to tell Chilly what was happening and Chilly needs to listen to the one guy who is out there seeing what is happening. Chill needs to talk and listen to his people.
3. We did nothing to address EJ’s injury. Putting a rookie LB in to lead us to the Super Bowl is not an option. Move Greenway or Leber to the middle and sign Brooks. Old, sure. But knowlegable enough to be better than a rookie.
4. Some of these players act like they don’t care. They are acting like primadonas. Coming in every game knowing theat we can be beat if we don’t put our best foot forward, does not seem to be the prevailing attitude.
5. These coaches have no scheme or variations/adjustments when there are games like this. The play calling was pure stupidity and once again our route running was mediocre. These guys don’t know how to pull away-unless they think they are the primary target. They don’t push themselves. Sometimes you are a decoy. If I am hunting duck I don’t throw feathers on the water. I make the decoys as realistic as possible. If a WR is not the center of the play, he needs to make D players on his side think something is up. Keep attention drawn as if they were the target. Guys that move away from the huddle 1st and walk to their spot just inform the team. “It is not my play”

I love my team but there are some serious problems going on. Maybe we need to bring Napolian Dynamite back for a spell. We are sitting on our hands while teams like Balt. and Philly are starting to peak.
It is not too late. This team needs to put together a last 2 games before the playoffs. Forget resting stars. We need bye week and then these guys can take a day or 2 to relax and heal. Right now they need to pull it together. Not lose a final game just to rest players. They need to build momentum and have 2 games to do it. Do that. Then you have earned a rest.

by WVVikings on Dec 21, 2009 11:41 AM CST reply actions

I think the extension

of Chills contract should have been put on hold til after the end result of this season.
I was hoping the coaching would get better. I would be in favor of Frazier taking this team. Shannahan would not be tolorating some of the stuff going on.
Bienemy could go in that locker room and not worry about hurting feelings.
Contrct ex. for chill pill was done too early. Like his hiring.

by CitrusFLViking on Dec 21, 2009 11:48 AM CST reply actions

That's just sad

I actually would have supported a switch to Jackson in the 4th quarter, just to shake things up if nothing else. Not to mention protecting our 40-year-old quarterback for the playoffs.

Everyone knows Favre wants to play, but that he doesn’t have enough respect for his coach to do what the he thinks is best for the team speaks volumes about a number of different things that may bite this team down the road. This news worries me more than the game itself did. Christmas Eve is coming up and Childress has a history of cutting players that rock the boat at that time. Let’s hope his petty, vindictive side doesn’t come out again this year.

By the way, which one is Ole Man Gruff and which one is Scuffy Beard?

A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.

Agreed
I actually would have supported a switch to Jackson in the 4th quarter, just to shake things up if nothing else.

It makes a lot of sense. If the O-line isn’t holding, then you want a more mobile QB back there, maybe one who can scramble if necessary.

Also, the Panthers had game-planned for Favre, moving T-Jack in would have thrown that off.

I respect that Favre wants to play, wants to finish it, wants to produce the victory. But ultimately the head coach is supposed to have his eye on the big picture and make the right decisions. It’s not Favre’s fault, it’s Chilly’s, for failing to be the head coach he was hired to be.

I’m a Minnesota Vikings fan… and #4 happens to be our best option at the QB position THIS YEAR – Regardless of your anti-Favre opinion.
You can’t blame him for a lack of run blocking OR pass blocking. That has been the difference in December 09 for the Vikings. Not Favre.

Go back and look at his career stats. Pay close attention to the number of sacks already this year (31- most since 2000). Add that to our rushing decline this year and try to convince me that Favre is the problem.

I didn’t pay close attention to his December performances in the past and I’m not going to argue that the stats are wrong… but they also do not tell the whole story – It’s tough to win in the NFL, even tougher in December – but it really comes down to which teams you play when and how you match up against them.
2 more games to play… let’s see how those stats ‘shake out’ against the Bears and the Giants.

This controversy is NOT over

That statement is just Chilly doing damage control. Do you think a head coach would ADMIT he was vetoed by a player? “Yeah, I wanted to take Favre out, but he said no, and I guess you saw who has the power by who played (read: FAVRE)”. NO. He is trying to save face. But it does not change the fact that Chilly was pissed at Favre’s play and Favre said “screw you.”

Also, everyone is missing another crucial point. THE VIKINGS ARE NOT RUNNING THE BALL AND FAVRE IS AUDIBLING OUT OF RUNS. He (and his butt-boy Bevell) are subjecting the offense to Favre’s EGO and his desire to throw. For example:

“The Vikings had a 30-20 lead and were running their four-minute offense. The Packers were out of timeouts, and the Vikings called a run play on 3rd and 10 with 3:27 left. Favre changed the play at the line of scrimmage and took a shot downfield that fell incomplete, stopping the clock.”

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4761127

Now Favre is trying to prove that he is not declining in December like all the critics said he would, and ironically, IS declining precisely because he has destroyed the Vikings offensive strength (RUNNING AD) which thus takes away the reason he was having success early on (threat of the run).

I love the Vikings and I know they probably can’t win in the postseason without Favre, but this is the double-edged sword with him. His talent gives you a chance, but his ego can destroy you.

by Ace991 on Dec 21, 2009 5:42 PM CST up reply actions

THE POINT IS.........

Peppers controlled the game…Favre was getting the crap knocked out of him.. Instead of Chilly saying, Brett maybe we should take you out, cause you are taking a beating..Chilly should have put Kleinsasser (who is supposed to be the best blocking TE in NFL) over to help out with Peppers.. But, that would have taken some common sense, which Chilly seems not to have very much of..I am not a Chilly fan..And for the record, have never been a Favre fan.. BUT, Favre gives us a MUCH better chance of winning the TJack does..Chily is way too conservative in plays called, especially on the road and adjustments made during the flow ofthe game is nota strong point for Chilly either..

THE PROBLEM IS THAT WE ARE NOT ESTABLISHING THE RUN

This Favre / Childress power play IS real; listen to the podcast with Chris Mortensen and the video with Dilfer – they have PLAYER sources:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4761127

The issue is not that some other QB gives the Vikings a better chance to win than Favre in terms of throwing the ball. It’s that Favre’s EGO is audibling to pass plays instead of establishing the Viking’s strength which is running the ball and controlling time of possession.

THE VIKINGS DID NOT RUN THE BALL ONCE ON THEIR FIRST TWO 2ND HALF POSSESSIONS. Please explain that to me; the Vikes were winning 7-6 and Adrian had some nice runs to get the TD. POUND THE ROCK. But no, Favre wants to throw the ball to get his glory, MVP, and show that he is not “fading” down the stretch.

This is what Childress is pissed about. His philosophy is to establish the run and play conservatively. Argue with it if you want, but that PHILOSOPHY is what forced teams to (a) respect the run, which opens up the pass and (b) keeps the D fresh. The Vikings are not built to be pass-happy. Childress knows you need to consistently run in order for the run game to succeed. 12 carries for AD? Pathetic.

HAVE YOU ALL FORGOTTEN WHO THE BEST PLAYER ON THIS TEAM IS? It’s #28, not #4.

Mark my words, if Favre wins this power play (which it looks like he is), the Vikings will be 1-and-done in the playoffs. I hate it, but it will come to pass.

Yes...

The Oline is not getting the job done up front… but thank you for blaming Favre.

I BELIEVE...

Favre didn't play like a future Hall of Fame QB last week

You know, it irritates me that I have to defend Favre, it really does.

Favre exactly produce stellar play last week either, a lot of his passes were crap; low, wide, lame ducks, you name it. He was mediocre at best.

But so was everyone else. And Favre’s play was made even worse by the poor play on the O-line. I saw balls dropped by just about everyone, and I only saw Favre able to get to Percy a couple times in the entire game. When you only convert a single 3rd down the entire game, that’s not just 1 guy…. the whole offense was sucking wind.

Trying to blame it all on Favre though, is just silly. He owns a good share of it already without the goat-ropers trying to pile on.

typo in the above comment:

Favre didn’t exactly produce stellar play
