Trash the run first concept....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

The 2009 minnesota vikings are not a run first team period!  Adrian Peterson is a beast (inspite of last night) but, you have one of the best signal callers in the game right now, I think it will be in the vikings best intrest to insert the no huddle offense IMMEDIATELY and let Mr. Favre go out and earn that paycheck, he knows what he is doing. (19 yrs in the bizzzz )  This the NFL, you have to keep everybody guessing. Name one team in the last decade that was a run first team and went on to win the SUPER BOWL........We have an excellent team and by now the coaches should understand that we have to allow the pass to set up the run and not the other way around. Three and Four wide receiver sets the rest of the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but....

are you sure you want our defense on the field that much? I dont. they cant cover a crack in the cement let alone an opposing WR.

We need to run to slow things down. Long drives are what we killed teams with early in the season. We dont do that anymore.

I dont get it.

I’m totally stumped at this team’s sudden ineptitude.

I don't think

that is what Pat is implying. It is a given that the ball goes to AP right off the bat. The play calling is so predictable. At least put Taylor and Peteron in the same backfield once in a while. If the ball goes to AP taylor can lead block or give the ball to CT on off guard runs. He seems better fit for that. You can also have have AD swing out and chester stays back to pick up a blitzing LB on short 1st down pass play.
The run is great but Chilly telegraphs everything. Brett knows this. espcially in the red zone where Chilly was slowing it down and letting the D adjust. BF had a play and wanted to hit the line before they could adjust.
Tempo has to be dictated to the situation. Plays need to be made variable enough so the D doesn’t have it pegged from the get go.

Peterson is no longer what he once was...

The fumbles make him just not worth it. He cost us a huge game last night and there is no reason to think he won’t continue to do so throughout the playoffs. Factor in his utter disappearance the last several games and you have a player who just isn’t worth the hype. His worshipers will cry foul and say retarded things like “No way – if you say that you just prove how dumb you are…blah, blah, blah” but he’s the fumbler, he still refuses to do simple things to protect the ball and at the rate he’s going, will fall to like the 6-7th (or worse) on the rushing leaderboard.

Just not the RB you want to have for a playoff bound team.

Let’s switch things up, make CT our primary and go from there. He can catch passes FAR better and by the looks of it, can roll off good chunks of yardage nearly every time. Something Peterson can’t do as consistently.

I’m done rooting for AD’s fumbling ass and hopefully the Vikings will bench his royal lameness in favor of a player who can protect the football. \:(

Why didn't he just go out of bounds

There was no hurry. By trying to push it I’m sorry, he blew it. We didn’t need a last second heroic play. Just make the yardage and tire their defense.

Some of you guys are talking crazy! Saying AP is “no longer what he once was” is ridiculous. Benching AP in favor of Taylor would be the downfall of your team. With AP in there teams gameplan to stop him, first and foremost. Teams put 8 in the box against him, which opens things up for Favre and co. They showed Favre’s Qb rating on PA passes, and it’s near perfect. Any idea who has a large effect on that?

I think you guys should play Taylor more too as well but it’s hard not to have a guy out there who can potentially break one for a TD at any time.

As to PTAmaddenking, abandoning the run first would be a horrible idea. Just look at what has happened the two times teams didn’t have to worry about your running games. (Arizona and Carolina) Neither of those teams had to load the box up, and your passing game struggled as a result.

by packallday555 on Dec 29, 2009 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

Well...

I’m not saying we should permanently bench him but he definitely needs to get less carries for a while, until he sorts himself out. :(

And I think teams are (unfortunately) starting to wise up to not needing to flood the box anymore. At what point do they stay afraid of AP with his recent performances? Once they realize that he’s not the same danger that he once was, we’re in even more trouble.

Hopefully he straightens himself out and that’ll be that. No need for debate if he’s on fire.

Most of his fumbles come downfield after he has a nice run. Teams aren’t just going to say well we can gameplan for Favre and just hope AP fumbles it after he runs for 10-15 yards on us. He is still the same danger he has always been.

Except when CT

lets the ball bounce off his hands and into a defenders (see Steelers game).

by KC612 on Dec 29, 2009 8:52 AM CST reply actions

Dude, you're an idiot

2000 Baltimore Ravens – Totally a pass team, I forgot! Trent Dilfer lobbing it up to Qadry Ismail and Travis Taylor. Perfection.

2001 Patriots – Even though they had Tom Brady, he was still young and inexperienced here, and was throwing to Troy Brown and David Patten. Antowain Smith (RB) had almost 1,200 yards rushing. You can argue they were a balanced offense.

2002 Tampa Bay Bucs – With Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott in the backfield, and Brad Johnson at the helm of the offense, do we even need to debate what their offensive philosophy was?

2005 Pittsburgh Steelers – Willie Parker had over 1400 total yards, and the only receiving threat they had was Hines Ward. The younger version of Rothles-douche didn’t go out guns a blazin’, he simply he didn’t lose those games.

So… you were saying?

Not a problem with running, but running from tight formations

This team clearly performs better in a spread offense, both running and passing. Even the MNF crew recognized it last night. CT manages to get a few yards through trash when AD tends to get nothing. But with more room, AD is the far better runner. For some reason he hasn’t been given the opportunity as often recently (until the second half last night). While I’ve been unhappy with Peterson’s fumbles, I don’t see the OT fumble last night as Peterson’s fault. It was simply a great defensive play.

by ChemErik on Dec 29, 2009 9:12 AM CST reply actions

Nope, it was AP's fault

He should have simply run out of bounds – that’s a critical period of the game. You don’t stupidly fight for one more yard that really won’t change the field position that much. At that point in a tight game, it’s all about protecting the ball, something that CT does far better than it appears AP will ever do.

I agree that overall AP is a better runner but if you’re going to fumble and cost us the game, I’ll take the less talented player every time who protects the football.

except...

we were all cheering him on while he was ‘running angry’ and planting Bears in the turf.
can’t have it both ways. fumbles happen.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Dec 29, 2009 9:25 AM CST up reply actions

Not really true

You can root for someone to do well but if they’re sucking and having the same issue over and over again, you sometimes have to sit back and take stock of things. This is clearly one of those times. He needs to ride the pine until he can sort out his issues, I’m afraid. :(

by Wytefang on Dec 29, 2009 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

I haven't argued benching AD either way...

and the only time he sucked last night was when he fumbled.
hindsight is 20/20, my friend.

I BELIEVE...

by ArizonaVikingsFan on Dec 29, 2009 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

Well imho...

there were a few times he was close to losing the ball. I could see it on the replays and I was VERY concerned. :( It was a better game for him but he still doesn’t break open any big runs anymore. And when he does get into the secondary, he is usually caught and brought down without getting into the end-zone. :( :( :(

C’mon AP, get it together wild-man!!!

by Wytefang on Dec 29, 2009 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

Haha it wasn’t like he was fighting for extra yards with the ball swinging all over the place like he sometimes does. He was simply falling forward and had Hillenmeyer make a hell of a play on him.

by packallday555 on Dec 29, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

agree that our formations are predictable...

we saw the potential on our last running TD.

I BELIEVE...

SIMPLE _ COACHING

This post is correct….The pass set up the run, simple…We say.." we need to go out and establish the run" they stack the box, demolish that theory…Then we get the pass going and Low and behold….gaps open up and we are moving the chains…How does it take this million dollar collective football mind "coaching’ 3 quarters to figure that out…..its embarrassing……..I hate to compare, but that is why the Eagles are competative every year……You NEVER see Andy Reids team get out coached like we do……HUH

Fumbler

At every level fumblers eventually get benched. Pop Warner, Middle-school, High school varsity, NCAA Div. anything, and Pro.

Ernest Byner comes to mind. AP choked. Plain & simple. You notice he wasnt offering any lame excuse about “just let me keep getting the ball & I’ll quit fumbling”. Nope. He was, and I quote, “sick”.

He knows he’s got a problem. And now the whole world is on to it. Too bad he’s such a physical beast cause’ when he runs he’s scary. You want a young stud like that ramming in to people.

But if the “kid from Caddyshack” Hunter “I have a supermodel’s name” Hillenmeyer can just punch the ball out at will…….houston, we have problems.

by Viking64 on Dec 29, 2009 10:01 AM CST reply actions

Well AP will fumble

and Brett Favre will throw picks. Oh wait… If we can get Favre to stop throwing picks we can get AD to stop giving up fumbles. I’m all for you running people over, keep getting that last yard good times! But here it is, when you are in traffic, and you have people all over you and your trying to eek out that last 3/4 of an inch wrap that ball up baby! Two hands two arms! Hold it tight! You cannot one arm the football in the NFL when your being tackled I don’t care who you are.

by Grime on Dec 29, 2009 3:03 PM CST reply actions

What's really ironic....

…is that AP is turning the ball over more than we thought that Favre would turn it over via INTs. How sad is that? :(
