Vikings/Cardinals Fourth Quarter Thread

Things have continued to get uglier for the Vikings, as the Cardinals have extended their lead to 17 with a couple of Neil Rackers field goals.

Brett Favre has never overcome a deficit of more than 14 points. . .but, hey, there's always a first time. . .right?

Right!?

Cardinals 27, Vikings 10 as we go to the final quarter of play.

Who to blame for EJ?

With 10:30 left 4th down, down 3 scores, Childress voted to punt. They gave up. And what happens?

EJ breaks his leg.

I still can’t believe Chilly punted mid 4th quarter or so. It probably wouldn’t have made a difference. But I’m reminded of last year’s loss at Tennessee. Similar situation, where Chilly punted and essentially ended the game. He said he’d do it differently the next time after that game. So…?

Hats off to Arizona, though. They gave the Vikes a thorough beatdown.

Reading the posts here and following the game only on gamechannel (yahoo) graphically seems they really did not have their stuff together almost right after the excellent start….

Happens, and as stated before, not the end of the world…..We had lost one, ok now we have lost another…..

Think the team, will now refocus and get back to playing well what they do best….kick butt football…..

Let’s see what happens next weekend….another good test to get ready for the playoffs….as soome have also said, pressure definitely off regarding running the slate now…

Now we can focus on getting in shape for the playoffs…..

Too early to say that from this team.....

Look back on other teams that have won….did they lost a few games? Yes…..

Did they fall apart? NO….they fixed the problem areas….what the Vikes need to do…..

This is life….Rome was not built in a day….and when it is built in a day (figuratively) look what happens….

Dubai is a good example…..all so fast, comes tumbling down (again figuratively)….Better to have a solid foundation (Vikes have this)….and work on issues as they arise….(Vikes can do)….

by gerkvoltage on Dec 6, 2009 10:48 PM CST reply actions

Let’s hope there’s not something on film on what Cards O-line did. Favre had a bad game, no doubt, but turnovers ARE rather flukey, and he wasn’t going to finish the year with just 3 picks. I thought he’d regress a little. Let’s just hope the December thing isn’t a shoe ready to drop. If it is, nothing you can do, I guess.

But the Minnesota D-line was completely neutralized. That’s the concern in this one. So like I said, let’s hope there’s nothing schematic there.

by jianfu on Dec 6, 2009 10:51 PM CST reply actions

the DL had no time to get on top of em anyway

by GB Nordic on Dec 6, 2009 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

Well, they weren’t doing a 3-step-drop-and-throw-to-the-flat, exactly. The Cards offense really got clicking in the second quarter, showing how precise timing can beat good coverage. But that’s downfield stuff, too. Takes time.

A lot of people are questioning Allen, but I thought this was easily the worst game Kevin Williams has played in a LONG time. I’m a big Williams fan and think he’s their best defensive player. But tonight he just didn’t have it. There were several downfield strikes by Warner where the edge rushers were getting up the field a bit, but there was zero push in the pocket. So, ride Allen and Edwards out of the play, and let Warner sit in the pocket.

I don’t mean this to sound like whining, because I thought the Cardinals played incredible and absolutely deserve credit. They earned this win big time. But I wonder how much effect the field had. Kevin Williams relies a lot on his explosiveness, and he just seemed to struggle with his footing, slipping and even getting knocked to the ground by one-on-one blocking, which never happens.

by jianfu on Dec 6, 2009 11:09 PM CST up reply actions

Let's hope they figure it out

Accuse me of being a whiner, but the coaching staff is what worries me. Great as Bud the God was, he took 4 terrific teams to the Super Bowl and was quite effectively out coached each time. I mean, the Vikes were never even close. Chili has terrific talent too. But at this level, the margin of error is too small. Can’t win on simply talent alone, especially in football. But I would love to be wrong.

Favre's throwing too much

How many passes has Favre thrown over the last two games? A hundred or more? At the beginning of the season, Childress was all about limiting Favre’s throws, conserving his arm. That went out the window when the passing game started clicking. An air attack is important, but Favre is still 40. Even if he’s not throwing very far down the field most of the time, repeating the motion takes a toll. Tossing a lot of passes catches up with you. Favre looks 100 percent better than he did last year. The operation was obviously a great success. But I’d get back to conserving the arm. Odds are, they won’t make it through the playoffs if the passing game is 80-90 percent of the offense. Most teams don’t. It also ups the chances of jamming a finger, cracking a hand on your own lineman’s helmet— not to mention suffering the effects of a brutal sack from the blindside. Maybe this was just a bad game and Favre will shrug it off. I hope he does. I’m pulling for the guy. But Childress could help him out a little, too. The Packers didn’t go all the way when Favre was chucking the ball all over the place. And the VIkes probably won’t either if the game plan doesn’t change.
