Where do we go from here?

I know, it is just one loss.  We still have a good lead in the division and a probable 1st rd bye in the playoffs.  But I am really more concerned with how we looked against a Superbowl caliber team and the loss of EJ Henderson.  I only saw the replay of his injury once, but damn.  My guess is that he is gone for the season.  Who steps up for him?

What do we make of our Vikes after a fluffy schedule and high expectations?  Honestly, they looked lost out there.  They took an early lead and I thought that we had it in the bag.  Arizona really stepped up their game and handled the Vikings in every facet of the game.  I know that AD was shut down early, but when the Cardinals are obviously playing the pass do we keep passing?  Whey do we run towards the right side of the line when we are playing 2 backups a 1st year starter?

I am sorry and I know that I may be overreacting, but I was extremely frustrated with how we looked tonight.  The Cards are the type of teams that we will meet in the playoffs.  Home field or not, we have to make a better effort than this.

its concerning, but we beat Cincy next week and we are talking a different game. bad game all around. chili knew that, why the hell leave brett in there? I dont understand

by Marty'sBetter on Dec 6, 2009 11:06 PM CST reply actions

Cincy is the key

You’re right. Let this be a wake up call for the team. If we look bad against the Bengals next week then it speaks very poorly on the Vikings ability to play elite teams.

Everyone was so excited to start talking about Vikings vs Saints last week but we have a lot more football to play before that game happens… IF that game happens!

And it’s only going to be harder without EJ. Thoughts and prayers to the Henderson household tonight.

A good coach makes his team better, he doesn’t wait for a better team to make him look good.

and why

keep adrian in? take as many players out as you can.

by hickenizgriz on Dec 6, 2009 11:10 PM CST reply actions

Your concerns are legit...

but I’ll take the wake-up call now instead of in the playoffs. Outside of the EJ tragedy, this game may actually be helpful for the team.

Its one loss

Some times the game just goes that way. I was able to watch quite a bit of it and there were a bunch of missed or bad calls early. The intercepted pass early negated by the off sides penalty. Its just a game we had to get out of the way. Injuries are a very big concern, we will just have to see how this pans out.

Get Windfield back get some even play calling and who know we will by 7.

it is better to be thought of as dumb then to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

We need Herrera back; Artis Hicks is a good backup, but Herrera was playing well this season. I’m concerned that Jon Cooper isn’t pulling his weight in the run game….thoughts?

by cutlassbob on Dec 6, 2009 11:24 PM CST reply actions

I assume you mean Jon Osullivan

our center? And no, the kid cant get any push whatsoever in the run game. Passing game, our line is just fine. Running game? We are a sad sad lot. That should not happen with a supposedly talent laden line.

Not ''snarky''

Just clarifying, as Jon Cooper is also a vikings lineman.

Turf Toe

That’s what Winfield was out for, originally.

Turf toe injuries require 4-6 weeks to fully heal, or they can come back again and again.

Winfield has been out for 7 weeks now, as of yesterday. In theory, he should have been ready to play against the Cards, but the docs must have decided that the extra week to heal was needed.

CB depth is the ugliest part of our Team...

Griffin kills us. I don’t care what ppl say. Can’t stand him. Sapp is a thug. QUITE CHEATING!!! Have good coverage.

...add #4 to the mix and see what you get... Championship.

by Macdaddy4508 on Dec 6, 2009 11:27 PM CST reply actions

Yes better coverage

but lets not get overboard about the cheating; because if your not cheating your not playing. You play to win, whether its trying to get into your opponents head by slapping him in the face or not.
I played on the d-line in school and can’t even on 1 hand count the number of plays where someone wasn’t cheating. Its only cheating when the refs call it. Sapp got caught, but it could have been because of the home field advantage. Our receivers were getting mugged out there and no calls were made.
Just a bad game all around and it needs to be put behind us. Learn from our mistakes and cleanse our wounds in Lake Minnetonka.
Skol Vikings!!!

..i would almost trade AP for a true shutdown corner..are there any?

by vik74 on Dec 7, 2009 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

Trade AP?!

Because he does everything he can to fit through a non exsistant hole our O line clearly can not create. Our run blocking is literally. average.

by Macdaddy4508 on Dec 7, 2009 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

No because we need a corner badly

We had three injuries last night all of them to our D well two on the O Line as well but they came back in. What the cards did to our D backs was brutal. I seriously think Griffens Mom woke up today with a black eye.

Sapp

The more I watch Benny Sapp, the more I like him.

He’s over-aggressive, he plays hard, and yes, he pushes the rules.

I think I like him a lot.

"They took an early lead and I thought that we had it in the bag."

Seriously?

We went up 7-0 after Arizona fumbled on the first posession. We scored on a turnover. And that was the only lead we ever had. You thought we “had it in the bag” at that point?

by puddnhead on Dec 7, 2009 12:03 AM CST reply actions

Doesn’t some peoples confidence in their team amaze you? One of my Vikings friend texted me after they recovered the fumble and scored and said, “We’re definitely winning this one.”

by packallday555 on Dec 7, 2009 1:21 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

The transition from “we have it in the bag” with a one score lead & 55 minutes to play, to “where do we go from here” after that bag turned out to have a hole, is … well, almost manic-depressive.

Please, quick: somebody name me the last Superbowl winner who did not have one ugly loss during the regular season. I personally thought the ’06 Colts might be able to claim that, but Iooked it up and saw that they lost a divisional game to Jacksonville 44-17, and yes they were playing all their starters — in fact Jacksonville still had a chance to beat the Colts in the AFC South after that game, so it was a game they should have been up for.

I wonder how far back we’d have to go? To the 72 Dolphins? I dunno. The 85 Bears lost to the Dolphins 38-24, that game was 31-10 at the half, and 38-17 (three TD) until a bear TD in 4th Q garbage time (kinda like Vikings second TD last night). Maybe the late 80s/early 90s 49ers & Cowboys teams had no bad games?

by puddnhead on Dec 7, 2009 10:19 AM CST up reply actions

So many of us kinda over-looked this game!

And I think the Saints going 16-0 or even 15-1 helps us, as much as this lost will!

Why Do People Question The Vikings' Status?

by UnBannedVikingholic on Dec 7, 2009 12:39 AM CST reply actions

If anyone "overlooked" this game, they were fools

Or, more charitably, had not been following the Cardinals recently. Once Warner was playing, it was clear it was gonna be a tough nut. He missed last week & the Cards sagged, but the previous three weeks, they’d been incredible.

by puddnhead on Dec 7, 2009 10:21 AM CST up reply actions

Your overreacting

You guys are still 10-2 and currently in position to have a bye the first week of the playoffs. If a caveman came on this site with no knowledge of what’s happened so far in the 09’ season, it would probably seem to him like you guys are 2-10!

by packallday555 on Dec 7, 2009 1:20 AM CST reply actions

Not Overreaction

Of course Viking fans are worried. For the first time this year we played poorly and lose. We have played poorly prior but managed to snake a couple out there. This time you had BF throwing interceptions when he wasn’t rushed. Little run blocking from the O-Line. An exposed secondary. Little extra effort from anyone.

This, in my view, is a classic case of players believing their own press clippings. They simply forgot to play. Happens to every team. Eagles and Steelers lose to Ravens. GB loses to TB. We are not immune.

So lets forget about New Orleans and playoff scenarios and start playing football one game at a time. We have injuries just like every other team. Lets not make excuses.

Lets go Play to Win the Game.

Looking too far ahead

We lost sight of the ball…

Busy calculating playoff positions and home field advantages, and when we’re going to play the Saints…

Busy worrying about other team’s records and just assuming we were going to nail the rest of our schedule. Even here on the DN, look how many posts we have where we’re watching other teams games… it’s starting to look more like a general football blog than purely a Vikings blog.

People are even demonstrating more concern and worry about their fantasy football teams than the Vikings games, and hoping that players on other teams do well even when playing against the Vikings!

Too much talk about the game in February, and assuming we’re going to have the 32nd pick of the draft.

Yeah, we’re looking way too far ahead, we’re assuming and complacent. Anyone who’s been a Viking fan for very long knows that Thor doesn’t like that…

Unfortunately, from the interviews with Viking players that I’ve seen in the past week, the fans haven’t been the only ones doing this.

Time to put the future-blinders back on and focus, game by game. Stop taking anything for granted, this is the NFL and every team is just a hand-ful of mistakes from going from contender to wanna-be.

I was cussing at the screen after EJ went down and I saw Favre come back on the field.

I was starting to get worried for a second or two.

by midnightwonder on Dec 7, 2009 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

Tired...

Of hearing people complain about Cedric Griffin. Cedric isn’t Winfield and we all understand that, but he is good in his own right. He has the most picks on the team, He’s certainly a better tackler than most corners in the league, and he make plays. Last week he picked off Cutler in the endzone which halted them from getting it close to start and then we pulled away. Last year in the playoffs he picked off Mcnabb which kept us in that game. My point is, Many many cornerbacks, even the elite in the league, get made to look bad against Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald. And with the safety support not being the best, with zero pass rush in yesterdays game, don’t blame Griffin and the secondary. Nobody can cover Boldin and Fitzgerald for 8 seconds.

by NordicRealist on Dec 7, 2009 11:37 AM CST reply actions

+1

Not only that Boldin and Fitzgerald are freaks. Do people forget just how big and strong these guys are for receivers. It would be llike Detriot having 2 Calvin Johnsons that can run like AP after the catch.
Lets stop pointing fingers and picking out people. The Vikings lost as a team yesterday. The whole team failed and I hope it stung real bad so they can remember it and get better.

by midnightwonder on Dec 7, 2009 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

Yep, the whole team lost, not just the DB's.

ST’s gave-up that huge return that resulted in 7-points…..(again)
The O-line was shook-up early w/injury’s, and they never recovered from that.
ADAP only had 13 carries for only 19yrds…what the hell happened there? Can’t control the clock w.out a running game.

The D-line couldn’t get to Warner, and that resulted in the Vikings DB’s getting burned. It seems like nobody can make a solo-tackle. (except Winfield).
Phat-Pat showed up. B.Sapp made few plays too, but I don’t recall seeing anyone else. I never feel safe w/Sapp on the field anyway. He plays w/so much emotion that I’m always waiting for a personal foul to be called on him. But hey, I guess it’s better than watching Payma get burned…lol

I think it’s safe to say that Chilly and the Vikings were out coached, and out played in every part of the game last night.
At least the Vikings still control their own destiny, and it’s still early enough in the season to make adjustments.
