Cheerfulness in the face of adversity
Hello, I have been a Vikings fan from a young age, when the Purple People Eaters era was over, and Bud Grant was still coaching. I've seen the Vikings achieve a lot, and face a lot of adversity over this time. The Vikings have been excellent this year. Now, with recent events, and hearing and reading reactions to the Cardinals game, I feel the need to address my fellow fans.
We are Minnesota Vikings fans. As fans, we don't have a direct effect on how our team plays. Our only effect on the Vikings is indirect, through supporting and encouraging our team, and also crowd noise.
Yet, at this particular point in time, it is more important than usual how we react to the current situation. We need to face the adversity of the moment in the most effective manner possible. Attitude determines what will happen next, and if our team takes anything from us the fans, we want them to take something positive.
The loss to the Cardinals on Sunday Night Football was an emotional one. The injury to EJ Henderson horrified us and made us direct prayers and thoughts to him and his family. The pain our defensive co-captain suffered was palpable. We could almost feel it ourselves. Other players were also injured in the game: Phil Loadholt, Bryant McKinnie, Cedric Griffin, and Tyrell Johnson. Two starters missed the game completely due to injury: Antoine Winfield and Anthony Herrera. While the Vikings continue to lead the NFC North, the game has raised questions about the direction of the season.
In his press conference, Brad Childress said that he takes the blame for not having the team prepared. The Vikings lost, Childress said, because they were "out-tempo-ed." Let's give credit to the NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals for a well-played football game. The Cardinals played the kind of game that any fan would like to see their team play, and the kind of game that the Vikings have played at times this year.
The Vikings are engaged in a competitive struggle in which only one team will hoist the Lombardi trophy. At the beginning of the season, we expected to face adversity. We knew it would happen, but not exactly how. Now we know what that adversity is. There will be more challenges ahead. If we fans could look to one source of inspiration at a time like this, we might consider the credo of the British Royal Marines. They are a commando unit that is asked to undertake seemingly impossible missions. They succeed because of their attitude. Their credo is:
Courage, determination, resourcefulness, and cheerfulness in the face of adversity
We fans can look to the Vikings for inspiration that fits that successful template.
When EJ Henderson was injured last year, he faced the end of his season and surgery with courage. He came back this year and continued to play with everything he had, the same as always. Last night, EJ was taken down a new road--a different, worse challenge. Considering the situation, EJ will need to display a lot of courage to go through medical treatment and recovery. We all want the best for EJ and his family. If there is one man on the Vikings who has the courage it will take, he is EJ Henderson.
Yesterday in the game, after suffering a shoulder injury, Phil Loadholt went to the locker room, and then displayed his courage by going back out on the field and finishing the game. Visanthe Shiancoe played the game with a rib injury. Other Vikings played with injuries, too. These men displayed their courage.
Throughout the entire game, Pat Williams played with intense determination. Regardless of the situation, Pat Williams' determination made play after play. Pat Williams showed us what determination is.
On the game's opening drive, displaying resourcefulness, Benny Sapp forced a fumble by the Cardinals' running back. Tyrell Johnson displayed resourcefulness by recovering the fumble. Later, in several situations, the Vikings' defense displayed resourcefulness by holding the Cardinals' offense to three and outs, and at other times forced field goals instead of touchdowns.
It's that kind of courage, determination, and resourcefulness that anyone needs in order to succeed in a difficult challenge. We fans should take inspiration from the Vikings for these qualities.
The other quality that we need to display right now is cheerfulness in the face of adversity. Yes, our team is facing adversity. That does not mean anything more than that, however. What happens for the rest of today, tomorrow, and the days to come is open to change. The best and most effective approach in the face of adversity is to maintain cheerfulness. It helps everybody be calm so that they can do their jobs right. The only thing we fans can control is ourselves. We can't control how we feel inside, which is bound to be pretty bad today. We can control our attitude--how we project ourselves to the world. A winining attitude is critical right now, and if we fans display cheerfulness in the face of adversity, maybe some of it will rub off on our Vikings, and maybe they will get inspired by us, just as we are inspired by them.
It's the job of fans to support their team. It's our job to support the Vikings. We know our team is facing adversity right now. Let's keep things positive and cheer our Vikings on.
So, old chap, keep your head up. Where there's a will, there's a way. Go Vikings!

Here here!
Said better than I could have, and oh so true….This journey, ladies and gentlemen, ain’t easy, and sometimes it hurts, and it takes tenacity to achieve what you are striving for, especially when stormy weather such as a L like this causes….
The Vikings for me have been a central theme of my history – Minnesotan, Northland Dude, Mid-westerner Dude, mostly exemplifying my efforts to be a good soul, living in this big world and traveling to many strange and interesting places….They represent who I am to an extent….what I want to be, and even if facing adversity, not quitting….
Mark my words….This team will now show their ability to stand up when knocked down, as they were a little last night….They will stand a little bit smarter, more wary, and more ready, and maybe a bit angry as well….There is simply too much talent and hunger for it to be any other way…
Please read Man in the Arena by Teddy Roosevelt…..
- Teddy was a true American Hero, Noble Peace Prize Winner, and Inspiration still today, almost a century after his time….
- We as fans can either be the timid souls in the arena stands watching he alludes to – or voice/show our undying support in our small way, figuratively standing with them…
- Last night was a shock to me with the sky is falling reaction from the fans….Too many of these….I tried explaining my stand, but was more or less drowned out by the lamentations of woe is us…
- Hopefully these fans will have had some sleep now and time to digest what was, what can be, and what will be…..life goes on, another battle and more battles loom…
- This team needs our support, not our admonition….in tough times more even than when all is hunky dory….The good time fans better decide what is really important here….Worrying about what the other team’s fans will think, what the pundits will say, or supporting our team undyingly….
So the big questions:
- What will you do?
- Which will you be?
- Let me bring it a little closer and more personal….Do you abandon your loved ones when they stumble? I think not…
So let’s show that we are not the poor and timid souls watching them fight their fight as we adandon them to whatever fate….They can lose a battle as they did last night and STILL win the war (SB)….Will they? I do not know and neither do they, BUT they will have an easier time of negotiating the coming battles it knowing that many of us fans stand behind them….
Remember, they are professionals, they know what went wrong and also how to fix…Let them do their job, and let’s do ours in a professional and truly supportive manner!
GO VIKINGS!
SKOL!
I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

We lost?
I don’t remember much, I did wake up with a fifth of candian club laying empty in my hand in a puddle of my own vomit. Sort of did wonder what brought that on…
Well if we did lose and my headache is screaming it’s true don’t worry. People lose it’s only thorugh adversity that true strength can be acheived. There’s nothing to fear but small bunnies with grenades taped to their backs.
I’m sorry I think I need to go back to bed.
LOL
I hear ya! Had a caffeine OD here….was buzzing around all day – crashing soon -
People ran into today wanted to give me chill pills…..
Had to explain I had a serious family “situation” come up – a Viking problem…..
Then they understood lol!
Now back to earth…..with a headache too, like you!!!
Oooof……
I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

Thanks Medicineball
that was just the dose we all need to get us back in perspective. Our warriors are returning home and we must show them how appreciative we are that the put their bodies on the line every week to bring us a win to get us closer to that elusive Superbowl victory.
Skol Vikings Go!!
Right on :)
Our support can be meaningful. It’s one thing to complain and criticize as if we were the coaches, but when it comes to the team, standing behind it is what defines a fan. It’s easy to be a fan when the sun is shining and the W’s are rolling in, that’s when the wagon starts groaning from the weight of everyone who’s jumping on. It’s the bad days, the bad seasons, that separate the stout-hearted from the casual riders and the faint-of-loyalty.
Vikings have overcome far worse than this in the past, and this is one of the best squads ever to take the field wearing Purple. They had a bad day, it was bound to happen sooner or later… maybe it’s better that it happened now when it’s recoverable, than later in the post-season, when it’s not.
Time to look forward, to next Sunday!
Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!
SKOL!
Now this is thread,
I’ve been looking for today. 100%
"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
And the Rec I gave it,
is for the entire thread.
"What is best in life?"
"To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women."
I rec'd also....
Need to rally the troops here…..
There is no reason to worry the end of the Vikings world is at hand…..
Posts here paint a slightly different picture )more positive) and perhaps one that we all should be projecting!
SKOL VIKINGS!
TEAM: FIX THE PROBLEMS AND COME BACK TO KICK SOME ARSE ON SUNDAY AGAINST CINCI….BE MAD, VERY MAD……AND USE THAT TO DO WHAT YOU DO…..WE ARE HERE FOR YOU…ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT (IN MY CASE LOL)…..
I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!
