Thoughts from Sunday/Call Derrick Brooks?

First. Unless I missed something isn't Derrick Brooks still out there. Older yes but we need a guy familiar and experienced in the middle. He has played the 2 coverage and the last I heard he was keeping in shape for such a scenario rather than risk what is left of his carreer on a cheap contract. Playing Jasper at Mike isn't a good idea unless it is all we have. Brooks would bring in the mental experience needed. Much like BF does, management experience.

2nd- I had posted how the D seemed to let down against a couple teams (Balt. for one) and seemed to put the accelorator on coast. Then we have two overwhelming wins against weak Seattle and Chicago teams. I just don't think there was a sense of intensity. Not only the D line but everywhere. Seconadary looked weak. Once again we didn't seem to have a strategy or alternative plan (coaching)until we hit Percy deep, and a little too late, we really didn't test their deep coverage. That could lso be cause the route running looked horrible. No one seemed intent on putting on the burners or decoying away from the play. This left Favre with no check down options.

Third- I agree with Gonzo and his "Panic button" article. Do you remember out record last year at this time? Like teams like Pittsburg who didn't look Super Bowl material, late season lessons made them tough when it counted. We must use this and realize talent alone just doesn't do it. Maybe this is what we needed to get realistic. Every game from here on must be won with more heart and urgency. Maybe this is what it took to get us to realize that no one will bow down and quit. Washington, Oakland and even Tenn. showed us that this past weekend.

It is time to start playing playoff mentality ball if we want to have that carry into the playoffs. I don't know what the coaches are saying but I would have a big time "Come to Jesus" meeting with these guys and lay it on the line. Sorry to say but my favorites need to be taken to the woodshed. Adrian, hold that damn ball right and hit that line and create holes. You looked like you wanted their D to just let you pass. Jared looked like he was playing with a hangover and Edwards had a chance to take advantage and didn't. Where was kevin? Phat Pat was the only guy who looked hungary. Secondary, you better study a lot of film cause this is what Brees will bring to the table. Sid and Bernard, you have to make the corners think the ball is coming to you even when it isn't and for heavens sake, make evey route deceptive. You may be the 2nd or 3rd option. Going thru the motions won't break a big opening.

Time to take this to the classroom. Teams that win will learn from their errors. Players look inside themselves and say "what did I do wrong" No the other way around.

We are not sunk, but unless we take this to school, it can easily be one and out in the playoffs. We know we are better than that.

Prayers go up for EJ. What a discouraging feeling he must have right now. Guys. You can send letters to players via Viking front office. They do get them.. A stack of get well cards from his fans would help some

I heard

that the tentative plan was to use Jasper Brinkley as MLB in the base formation, subbing Ben Leber in the middle during nickel/dime/etc packages. I think we may be okay, as Brinkley is supposedly stout against the run (or at least was in college), and Ben has been decent in coverage. Thoughts?

Purple is the new black.

We still should pick up another MLB

To back up Brinkley or to start in case he doesn’t cut it.

Bet that options are being worked on right now....

If we need someone, will happen quick……

I would rather be IN the Arena than watching from the stands...That is my life!

To be fair, Jared Allen was being double teamed most of the time (mostly by adding a TE). But I was equally astonished at how poor Ray Edwards and K. Williams played. Phat Pat is a runstopper, not a pass rusher so him batting down passes is still impressive. Where the other D-linemen were at in the game is anyone’s guess.

Ray edawrds fell down about every play

And i didnt see anything from kevin williams

Brooks

was primarily outside. I remember him working the middle in tight formations. Though he technicly wasn’t the designated Mike he was often positioned closer to the middle in some of TB’s schemes. It wouldn’t be an awkward transition and I belive he filled in there a few games.
I would guess they are gonna shop around. If they feel Leber can handle the middle, then why not bring Brooks in?
I agree cutlass, and it seemed Jared just pooped out way too fast. But why didn’t Ray take the opportunity to shine?
Sometimes I like Brian R heart a little more than Edwards.

If he can transition to MLB

He could potentially be a good addition. Older LBs can still be very productive in the middle. It would be great to see him in purple, he is probably the best tampa 2 LB of all time.

Yep. I wish we would rotate in some subs or young guys when the energy is lacking. Sometimes it works to have guys not normally out chomping at the bit to get playing time; doesn’t have to be permanent, but it might be worth a try.

He should be a top ten pick, in my opinion. Very impressive though.

Absolutely on McClain

I love EJ and was thrilled when we drafted him. Jasper has had serious knee problems. This may change the whole makeup of our draft stategy. I was hoping we could get McCoy as many have him dropping faster than Aaaron Rodgers. Hmmm! Would that be a deja vu? At least we know Bretts time is limited.
Then I think of Gerhardt (is it?( from Stanford). What a moose of a fullback that kid could be. Blocking and a FB that would be a hell of a lot better than AD on short yardage runs for the first down.
Don’t get me wrong but I stated it before and read a similar comment from Dave Osborne. AP is a patient/wait for the hole runner. That killed him Sunday night. I also think it keeps AD from getting anothe 200 yards a season. Sometimes on days like that I think AD should stop slowing up in the backfield and just crash a hole.
Back to the picks-If we could get McClain, Gerhadt and MCcoy along with a great Safety/corner I would trade away the rest of the draft.
Let’s not be discouraged. I am thrilled with 10-2. I just hope I see signs of a wake up call. Hopefully by kicking Cincy’s butt.

for some reason i'm in love with all of alabama's team

Mccain and Arenas could both help us next year in the future. For some reason since mccain is just a junior i can see him returning next year for his senior year

Interesting article. I have no desire for EJ to rush his rehab though and hope he doesn’t put undue pressure on himself to return quickly. No sense in taking chances.

Here's the upshot quote;
A Twin Cities doctor who has worked with the United States ski team said Vikings middle linebacker E.J. Henderson’s fractured femur likely would not end his career and that he could run in about two months.

“Assuming everything is as it should be, my guess is he’ll be participating in training camp,” said David Thorson, a physician who works with the St. Paul Saints, Twin Cities Marathon and the U.S. ski team. “The bone heals fast, and he’s a healthy guy.”

D. Brooks -

I hate to say it brothers, but chicago has been totally depleated in the Linebacker position. They were all but desperate to bring in a veteran. They brought Brooks in 2twice to try-out for the position ans still was NOT signed….I do remember the stout Bucks D of several years ago but I am afraid that his time has Passed……Brinkley is a stud, and I think this could be a really big opportunity for him, God bless E.J……. Brinkley will surprise everyone, and I mean in a good way!!!!!
SKOL!!!!!

Thanks and interesting

I just think with Derrick it is a matter of $ and contract time. You are up there in years with time fading. Taking a small one year contract to risk lifelong injury is what he is thinking. He is a smart guy. I got to here him speak when I volunteered at Super Bowl activities last year. Got to speak with him a few minutes. He gives you the impression he has a buisiness degree. Very smart.
I think the Bucs did him a disservice. I am not a Bucs fan , but living down here he is one of those guys that put his heart into community service. Much like I saw Wade do.
PS Cleavor name. I wouldn’t want a name to show hate toward teams I don’t like but it is unique and I have a good sense of humor.

Maybe...

He be willing to take a concession to play for a contender. If I was in his position I would make sure the bears made it worth my while financially, but the vikes can offer a little bit more without putting money on the table.

Wouldnt hurt to bring him in

and see how much tread is on his tires

"We Szekelys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland the fighting spirit which Thor and Odin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the werewolves themselves had come."
