CincyJungle Presents: Ask a Bengals Fan!

Hi Norsemen and Norsewomen. I'd like to extend the invitation for you fans to ask me, a fan and blogger from CincyJungle, and my co-bloggers, any questions you might have about the Bengals so you can get to know the opposition before this weekend's Super Bowl preview. I look forward to informing you to the best of my ability.

I look forward to our teams' bout this weekend, as it could tell us a lot about how good the Bengals are - if they are simply a team that plays to the level of the competition, or if the passing attack is so deteriorated that we won't have a chance to make a playoff run. It'll also tell us how we run the ball against a good NFC defense, just how good our defense is against a juggernaut offense, and if we can protect Palmer against elite pass rushers.

Bring on the questions!

Anxiously waiting myself

The bengals were in Superbowl 16, playing against Joe Montana and the 9ers…..That game, is the reason why I started watching football…..I have been a distant Bengals fan ever since…Of course i am a die hard viking fan, this should be a great game, for both our squads….Both our fans have been let down so many times, Do you really think your receivers are not up to task? After our last game against Fitz and Boldin, I question our pash rush, and your D has been scoring me points all season on my fantasy squad.

I think Ochocinco is our only great receiver anymore.

Coles seems to be showing his age, Henry was the only (other) deep threat, and I question Chad’s ability to stretch the field anymore. Caldwell has been off and on, but he’s been great down the stretch, especially in the red zone. He’s been absent in the past few games, so maybe defenses are starting to figure him out.

Carson has been off, from my observation, in the past couple of games as well.

Yeah, I’m in love with our defense. They have had it easy lately, and I will be curious to see how they do at slowing down AP without our top defender against the run, Domata Peko, out with injury. The good news is Keith Rivers will be back at LB.

How do you feel your D line stacks up against our O line?

As we saw last week in our game with the Cards, we can have a bad day….

I have not kept up with the sacks against your team this year, but maybe that is a sign that they are not bad, since has not been in our eyesight so to speak?

Think will be a good test for both teams….

By the way, thanks for your time coming over here….

I knowthe Vikes fans are looking for a revived team coming out for a strong game against you….

Should be interesting!

I think our offensive line can occasionally struggle against solid pass rushers.

It is one of the best run blocking lines in the league, but can leave something to be desired every now and then in pass protection.

That being said, the tempo of the game will probably dictate the Bengals’ gameplan. If we don’t have to play catch up and we can establish the run, I don’t expect to see Carson throw more than 25 passes.

sounds familiar

that is what it was supposed to be like with Mr Favre…but something goofy has happened to our Masterful run game…not sure exactly what it is…yours looks like ours was supposed to be,,,,Adrian tearing it up and Favre managing the game…Now we are in that all on Favrre shoulders scenrio that I think could end up Biting us…Favre is amazing when he doesnt have to do it all,,,,,,I have been thinking this is our best opponent all season…..think it still will be a great game

by PURPLEPUSSYEATER on Dec 8, 2009 1:56 PM CST reply actions

I certainly hope it is a great game!

That’s really all we, as fans, can hope for. An entertaining game with that tells us something about our teams and is a potential win. One of the great NFL games this season could be played in MN this weekend. Hopefully Favre’s arm isn’t falling apart.

Unless LJ turns into a QB, I think you are asking of the wrong guy. Maybe kevin or pat will squish him for you.

The Turn around

Thanks for joining us. We have had some great guests and look forward to reading your comments.
I was astonished at the huge drop that Cincy took. I thought losing Housh would be your death of it. Chad Egocinco the #1???
I liked what I saw a couple years back but then =CRASH!
Aside from Benson growing up and Carsons health improving, What else?

by CitrusFLViking on Dec 8, 2009 2:52 PM CST reply actions

A combination of things.

Mike Zimmer is one of the best D coordinators in the NFL. He took a bunch of guys that no one else wanted (Chris Crocker, Dhani Jones to name a few) and middle-to-late-round draft picks and made a top defense out of them. His schemes are excellent, as are the talents of Domata Peko, Leon Hall, Michael Johnson, Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga.

The offensive line got bigger, smarter, and learned how to run block. Carson’s back, so defenses can’t just stack the box. We’ve seen improvements in every phase of the game. Hard to pinpoint it.

How do you think your D Line will do against our O Line

We’re a bit banged up right now on the offensive line side with issues to both of our tackles and our right guard out last week with a concusion. Does your front four on D usually get enough pass rush so that you don’t have to blitz? Or does your D rely more on blitzing packages to get into the back field?

Oh and thanks for coming over. I’m ‘sure I’ll see you on your site as well. :D

by Grime on Dec 8, 2009 4:19 PM CST reply actions

We've seen a steady pass rush for most of the year.

For some reason it has excelled against teams like Baltimore but disappeared in Oakland. Not sure why. But the D-Line, especially with Zimmer’s rotations with getting 4 defensive ends in there at the same time on passing 3rd downs, usually finds a way to get pressure. Blitzes are pretty common in obvious passing situations, too.

I’d be more worried about stopping the run without Domata Peko. Pat Sims is good, Tank Johnson is a pass-rushing DT, and we have no other dominant run force on the D-Line.

by jsl413 on Dec 8, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

How does the loss of Domata Peko

affect your ability to stop the run? And if the Bengals completely sell out to stop Peterson, as has been the case in every…single…game, do you have a shutdown defensive back that can stop Percy Harvin and/or Sidney Rice?

BTW, I like your linebacker corps. How are they in short to medium coverage on tight ends and backs in the flat?

"We're used to Favre-a-palooza now. We're engulfed in Favre-a-palooza. It's not even Favre-a-palooza anymore. He's family now."

by Ted Glover on Dec 8, 2009 5:43 PM CST reply actions

The thing our LB sometime fail at is covering TE.

I dunno why. But it’s annoying as hell.

Both of our corners can be shut down, but Leon Hall is simply amazing. One of the best in the league this year, I think he’s given up something like 7 or 8 catches in single coverage all year. You’ll probably see 7 in the box, we had no problems with Ray Rice or Rashard Mendenhall, and Zimmer, I have faith anyway, will have a good gameplan.

Chad

Hey there – thanks for coming over.

Primma Donna’s usually annoy the heck out of me, but I think it’s pretty funny that Chad actually changed his name to OchoCinco.

I only know about him from the antics that make the national media – what’s he really like? Is he a team player underneath it all? Is he active in the community? Or is he really just a distraction (albeit a talented one) that you hope to unload when his contract is up?

by JasonAve6413 on Dec 8, 2009 7:10 PM CST reply actions

Yes,,,,and what does he plan to do with our horn????

I don't think Chad is really that much of a Primma Donna

He’s just loves attention. So maybe that’s something….

He is an incredibly hard worker and his teammates, for the most part, love the guy. He’s our best offensive deep threat, our most explosive player, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch. Marvin Lewis continuously says that the guy works harder than anyone on the team, and this year he’s in phenomenal shape. No more going to the locker room early to get an IV bullshit.

This season and beyon

The Vikes have put together a very talented 53 man roster and have drafted very well the last several years. They may be starting 3 rooks on D this week (Brinkley, Samford, and Asher Allen -I count nickle back as a stater). Offensively, Phil Loadholt has quietly been outsanding and Percy…well yea, he’s legit.

So tell us about some of the young Bengal talent and what we can expect to see in the future.

by Spartan99 on Dec 9, 2009 12:30 AM CST reply actions

My favorite part of the team is the young talent.

Domata Peko is a 3rd-year stud at DT. Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph are among the league’s best and are 3rd and 4th year players. Michael Johnson was a 2nd day pick this year, and has flashed immense talent. As he learns the game, I have no doubt that he can become dominant at the end position. 2nd year LB Keith Rivers has been extremely solid at SOLB for us, and Rey Maualuga has been a thumper at WOLB.

On the offensive side of the ball, nearly our entire offensive line is pretty young. Andre Smith has been good in the run-blocking game the past couple of weeks; Kyle Cook has been excellent in his first year at center for us. Bernard Scott is already a 100-yard rusher in his rookie season. Andre Caldwell has flashed Houshmandzadeh-esque clutch skills.

So there’s a bunch of names!

by jsl413 on Dec 9, 2009 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

Andre Smith

Bengals took a chance on drafting Andre Smith last year because he was so out of shape ( physically and mentally) for the combine last year. He has been hurt a lot this year. Will he be the dominate OT that the draft experts thought he would be or is he a just a big slow OT?
BTW, thanks for setting up this string? We really appreciate your efforts.

by lifelongvike on Dec 10, 2009 6:29 AM CST reply actions

Andre Smith

Broke his foot three days after signing, and has only been active for the last two or three weeks. Right now, we’re easing him in to the RT position, I haven’t heard his name called in conjunction with a sack allowed or a yellow flag yet, and while he hasn’t been overly spectacular, he’s been solid and will make a serious push to start in 2010.

2-Game leads

We currently have a 2-game lead over the following playoff teams.
GB Packers (we own tie-breaker, and they have Steelers & Cards left)
Philadelphia Eagles (Has Dallas next week)
AZ Cardinals (Pending win vs. 49ers MNF – still have Packers to play)

3 games remain….. —
Carolina (Below .500 team)
Bears (Below .500 team)
NY Giants (Could be considered a game to start our own 2nd string)

Next 2 games on the road! — Stay away from injuries, but put the teams away early.
Should be looking good for #2…

I know, that NY Giants fans are now probably MN fans hoping we succeed enough that our last game of the year is not a big game for us.
