Post super-bowl reactions.
Man... I wish we kept Tomlin.
It wasn't the best Super Bowl I'd ever seen, but I'd rank it solid third, behind the Rams/Titans and last year's flat out awesome game.
The best commercials went to Hulu's Brain Drain, followed by Conan O'Brian shilling for Bud Light in Sweden.
All in all, good game, I'm glad I watched it, now I'm gonna go let the Nyquil do it's trick.

Man I wish the Cards won...
Oh yeah, the Steelers win their 6th super bowl! Now that franchise can wear rings on both of there hands! I don’t feel happy for them at all ( I do feel happy for Tomlin and Moore)! Harrison’s personal foul (should have been ejection), practically no penalties called on the Steelers – it all makes me feel like the Refs jobbed the Cards, like they jobbed the Seahawks in 2006! I’m emotional and of course my comments aren’t justified! I just wish a “never had before super bowl appearance” Cardinal team of Underdogs could have won! I would have been happy for them, but I can’t be happy for a 6 time world Champion team that seems like they paid of the refs and have cheap shot players like Harrison! Go Steelers: Congrats on winning, but not deserving it at all, just kidding, but am I? : )

Wish I could agree
Or disagree. . .but, I’m checking in here from the USO at Los Angeles International Airport. I’m escorting my step-daughter so she can get her flight back to Australia, crashing here at the USO, and leaving L.A. at about 0630 tomorrow to fly back to Mississippi.
Nothing like taking the scenic route. . .I’m going from L.A. to New York, New York to Atlanta, and Atlanta to Biloxi/Gulfport.
Our flight from New York to L.A. tonight was a Delta flight that had Dish Network in each seat, and NBC was one of the channels they had. . .and as soon as the National Anthem finished, NBC cut out and didn’t get back on the rest of the flight. I had to get score updates while watching the replay of Federer/Nadal on ESPN2.
I’ll have to find the game online somewhere and do a reaction to it after that. One with commercials, even.

Great Game!
One of the better Super Bowls, definitely. The game could have gone either way, and in the end, the Steelers were just a little bit hungrier.
It was great to see Mewelde get the Ring, even though he’s in Steeler colors now.
Refs did make one bad call that I could tell; at the end, Warner’s attempted pass was ruled a fumble, recovered by the Steelers, and I think he had forward motion on that arm. I saw the motion, the ball slammed forward from his hand, seems obvious to me that it was an incomplete pass. We’ll never know if there was a successful Hail Mary left in the Cards or not.
Every time I watch Fitzgerald, I can’t help but think to myself, ‘He should be wearing Purple’. Only reason he’s with the Cards is because Denny Green snapped him up in the third round, which also means the Vikings could have grabbed him. Considering that they knew who he was, since he had been a towel-boy for the Vikes, and the son of the Vike’s Trib coverage reporter, and from all accounts really wanted to be a Viking, I can only presume the Vikings didn’t think he was worth drafting that high. Our huge loss. Fitzgerald was a beast of beauty out there, and had the Cards won, the likely MVP.
Cardinals played a lot better than I thought they could, hat’s off to them for representing the NFC so well. And congrats to the Steelers, and Mike Tomlin, and M&M!

To be honest, I didn’t really find it that interesting until about 4th Quarter. It was just too one-sided up until that point. The refs were calling practically anything they could on the Cardinals, Arizona’s defense was letting Pitt’s offense do whatever they wanted, and their offense wasn’t click. Then the 4th Quarter hit, and we FINALLY got to see a good game. I tried to stay neutral during the whole thing, but I was pulling for the Cards near the end.
And I absolutely LOATHE how the Cardinals had to not only throw 2 challenge flags, both of which lead to overturned plays, and how the Warner “fumble” wasn’t even reviewed. If it wasn’t in the 2 minute warning, you can bet that third challenge flag would have been thrown. Way to go Refs. You only added fuel to the flames of the Ref-Steelers love affair.
But Grats to the Steelers. Your defense got torn to shreds, but you did just enough to win, and you had a tough regular schedule. It was a well deserved victory.

Hurry-Up Drill
That’s when the Cards were at their best. When they didn’t give the Steelers D a chance to rest up, but kept pushing, they forced the Steelers to use up their time-outs just to catch their breath.
I understand how they thought not going to Fitzgerald earlier was a good idea, letting him pull the attention off everyone else…. Reminds me a lot of how the Vikings have held AP in reserve. But in the end, using Fitz as a WR was more effective than using him as a distraction, and maybe Chilly needs to take note of that too.
According to what I saw of the preliminary listing of the Vike’s 2009 schedule, we get to play both the Cards and the Steelers this winter :) .

&!#% being sick - further commentary
I remember wondering about that myself. Watching the replays, it appeared to me that the ball was coming out of Warner’s hand while it was still going backwards. It was definitely close though.
Regarding Harrison not getting ejected, I agree 100%. You beat on a man when he’s physically prone, and you should be ejected. This is football. Not MMA. Cut that crap out.
The one thing that had me confused, was why was Fitzgerald not standing for either the anthem, or the Star Spangled Banner? I saw Fitzgerald sitting on the bench and another Cardinal working on the cycle. Was it nerves, or a protest, or what?
When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Yeah, when he was beating on the placeholder, I think that’s who it was, he definitely should have been ejected. It was ridiculous. You had the guy pinned on the ground, for Pete’s sake you don’t have to beat on him as well. Maybe he was trying to send a message to the Cardinals, since he knew that getting the 15-yarder wouldn’t give them an automatic first down.
But geeze, who else thought the ammount of yellow flags hitting the ground was ridiculous? Granted the holding calls I was okay with, they were pretty bad, Gandy, but some of the personal fouls seemed like the refs just wanted an excuse to continue the Steeler drives.

The Penalties
Appeared to be legitimate in my opinion. What was not cool, is that they were so one-sided for most of the game. And drive extending; the Wilson penalty on the FG that resulted in a first down inside the five yard line was ultra bogus. He didn’t hit him hard and was at least blocked into him.
Given the two goal line stands (one of which was 7 cracks) forcing Steelers FG’s, how did you find the game wasn’t interesting until the fourth?
by LoveHate on Feb 2, 2009 12:59 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It was just too one-sided for me. In the first half, it was nothing but Steelers. The third quarter was nearly the same way. And then BAM! 4th Q hit and Ike Taylor decided he didn’t wanna cover Fitzgerald anymore. All the penalties on the Cards didn’t make it much more interesting for me either.
It was the most intense 4th Quarter I’ve seen in a SB, but, overall, I just felt like this one was a bit of a flop.

I should have added
Any time you have well matched opponents, each will commit rule infractions. I didn’t take issue with the calls against the Cardinals, only that the referees failed to flag the Steelers for the majority of the game. Calls are missed all of the time, but you can’t only missed them against one team.

Gandy reminded of one of our own ‘beloved’ lineman…with all the yellow flags I thought perhaps Ryan Cook had squirmed his way on to the field somehow.

Blatant BS
That’s the one thing that really irritated me.. the Steelers just got a slap on the wrist for that, and Harrison’s actions, caught in total on film, were way beyond justifiable. To me, that really took away all the shine from his 100 yard rumble earlier on.
On the ref calls, though…. you know, I don’t care if they have to take 30 damn minutes to review the issue from every angle conceivable, just get the call right. There’s times when the refs need to take the time to work that out, whether or not one of the teams complains. Unlike when the Vikes are playing, though, the Cards seemed to get a fair shake on the reviews. On the last play, the Cards could have called for a review but accepted the fumble call, so maybe Warner knew better than we could see, what happened.

Well, I don’t know. I thought it was an incomplete pass, but it was definitely much closer than the first incomplete ruled a fumble. Warner’s arm was going forward after he was hit, I think he was trying to throw it away. I mean, the defender didn’t knock the ball forwards, Warner threw it forwards. Add in the 15 yard penalty for the unsportsmanlike conduct (I think its stupid that you get 15 yards for removing your helmet, personally) and I think the Cards are at the 25 yard line with 5 seconds left. Fitz or Boldin could catch a 25 yard endzone pass.
But its water under the bridge.

Too many penalties
Way to many penalties is this game that did not need to be called. The first instance was the running into the holder call. It was obvious that he was tripped into the holder and could not control his momentum. If he had hit the kicker it would only have been a running into the kicker call. This is a rule that needs to go, and it could have changed the complexion of the game drastically for no reason.
15 yard penalty for taking off the helmet? Stupid, even if the refs properly reviewed the fumble, the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty should not have been attached. There are times in a game when extreme joy over takes a person and it is acceptable. It is why people play the game. He was not showing off, showing up the other team, bringing disrespect to the game . . . he just recovered the game winning fumble in the final seconds of the super bowl. He should be excited to that degree.
On the other hand, prop using does show up the other team, it does bring disrespect to the game. That Kick off should have been set back to the 15. This was about the only time in the game the refs did not call a penalty when one should have been called.
Poor refs
Rothlisberger was in the endzone in the first quarter. Even if he wasn’t, there was no evidence that indcated his knee ever hit the ground.
Warner fumbles. I understand the idea that it is safer to call a fumble under the idea that a mistake can be fixed with a challenge, but when it is blatantly obvious that it was a forward pass and it would cost a team a challenge to challenge the play, it is a bad call.
Final touchdown, did he have two feet down? Who knows. I think he probably did not have both feet down but it was not evident from the reply. The official had a hard call to make on the field, whether he made the right call is disputable, but there was no indisputable evidence to overturn it.
In the end it was a terribly called game. Sure the Cardinals would probably not have scored on the hail mary, but didn’t they at least deserve a shot if Warner did not fumble. Even the Steelers admit that Football is a 60 minute game. not a 59:54 minute game which can be called if a team is down by 4 on the 50 and probably wont catch a hail mary. It is not as if a hail mary has eve been caught anyways.

Corner Endzone TD
I watched the replay on that very closely. At first I wasn’t sure if his toes were touching the turf or not, but there was a moment where you could see them go down a little, then both bounced back up again together. That was the money-shot, only way that could happen is if his toes hit something, and the something was the turf. Kudos on that reception, it was tough and he played it tight. Cardinal defenders, on the other hand, 3 of them standing around, all out of position on the play.

For some reason, the refs missed Holmes making his tribute to LeBron James (or “putting hotsauce on a rabbit” if you’re Cris Carter), using the ball as a prop and the 15-yard penalty that’d come after. They just seem to have an infatuation in the SB with missing Steeler’s calls.

Great point Frost.
I was thinking the same thing at the time. Boy, that 15 yards could have helped…or maybe not.

Go Steelers!
All I have to say is this: The main reason I was cheering for the Steelers is because I did not want to see the Cardinals win a Superbowl before the Vikings. Congrats to the Cardinals for making it to the dance. But go Steelers!

Commercials and Warner
You forgot the e-trade baby commercials. I love them and the 2 new ones were great! Love the “shankopotomis” line.
If the Vikes wish to do something big ( I believe a Card play mentioned it) the Vikings need a consistant pass attack. Signing Warner might be a step in the right direction til we can develpo Jax or Booty or maybe a good young pick next year. Sure, Kurt is old but not immobile like gus. I like the idea of picking Nix from NC and then the best available guard , tackle or center. The kid from Oregon seems to be a good multi purpose choice. Plays both Center and Tackle. Small by some accounts but very athletic

I doubt they’ll let Warner go. I mean, he tore apart the Steelers #1 ranked defense. Just shredded them. Plus we don’t have Larry Fitzgerald, who may have just surpassed Andre Johnson as the league’s best reciever, and Anquan Boldin quality recievers. About the only thing Warner might find attractive in Minnesota is a phenomal running back that’ll open up the passing game for him more than in Arizona and a defense that could actually maintain a lead in the 4th quarter.
Man though, could you imagine how they’d have done if they had taken Peterson in the draft instead of that OT?
