One Less Potential QB

Well, it looks like Matt Cassel just got traded to the Chiefs. Figures that Scott Pioli would get ahold of the guy, he only spen the last season evaluating him. I was hoping a little bit this guy would be the 4th QB Childress was hinting at, but that's not the case.

I don't really have any idea what they gave up for him, but I think it says something about their confidence in Thigpen that the Chiefs are going to take Cassel. It should be a good fit at least. He's running plays called by Haley, who helped make Warner a household name again. Obviously he'll have some trouble behind that O-line, but I'm sure Cassel will pull through eventually.

Only a few Norsemen saw the “obvious” potential in Thigpen; rooting for him despite his production.

I doubt Cassel’s signing will necessarily stop the mob that thinks we can get almost anyone.

You’re probably right.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

I can't to find out what they gave up for him.

The speculation has been so wild on various blogs and of course from commenters, but even the paid professionals didn’t seem to have a clue what his worth was. I guess Pioli had the inside track in those regards.

Traded for a Freaken Second Round Draft Pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE COULDNT TRADE THAT FOR HIM??? What is wrong with this front office.

by Tony_O on Feb 28, 2009 1:03 PM CST reply actions

Seriously? It was just for the second rounder? Granted, its a high second rounder, but wow. I wonder if they didn’t give Pioli a discount.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 1:14 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe Pioli got a better deal

based on his history with the NE organization, and everyone else had a monimum starting price of a first rounder. But if that’s all it was, and the Vikes could have gotten him and didn’t, I’m stunned.

Not necessarily surprised, but stunned.

John Clayton of ESPN

Was saying just last week that a second round pick will get conversations going, but if the Pats expect a first, they may not have many suitors.

Still, you’d think more teams aghem Vikings would have considered making comparable and possibly richer offers.

by LoveHate on Feb 28, 2009 1:23 PM CST up reply actions

Apparently they sent Cassel AND Vrabel over for a second round pick. If this was any other team, I’d say they got fleeced, but I’m inclined to believe the Pats just gave Pioli a huuuge “hometown” discount.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 2:28 PM CST up reply actions

Hometown or something else?

My tinfoil hat theory is that Cassel and Vrabel got traded for such a good deal so New England can avoid another “Mangini Moment” where Pioli gives up some embarassing Patriot secrets.

by Tuba on Feb 28, 2009 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

Vrabel seems like the classic

‘get rid of a guy a year too early as opposed to a year to late’ player. Just enough left in the tank where the team that’s getting him is getting a good veteran player to provide some leadership to a young team, but only for a year or so. The Pats trade him, get some value in return, and don’t have to worry about a cap hit this time next year when they probably have to release him when he won’t re-structure his contract. Vrabel’s production dropped down to 4.5 sacks and only 40 tackles last year. In 2007, he had 12.5 sacks, and averaged over 50 tackles from 2003-2006. And he’ll be at least 35 when the season starts. Think Greg Biekert when he came to the Vikes. Had one good season, then pfffft.

So it’s essentially Cassel for the #33 overall pick. I doubt the Vikes could have made a comparable deal, because their 2nd round pick is in the 50’s, so they’d be looking at either their first, or a 2nd/3rd rounder, or maybe a 2nd/4th rounder.

by Ted Glover on Feb 28, 2009 3:02 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe the 33rd pick is a good spot, but...

It just strikes me as strange that NE would put the franchise tag on Cassel in hopes for a big return (2 first round picks) and then trade him for a single 2nd round pick. Why not get KC’s 2nd round and a 3rd or 4th round pick? The whole franchising of Cassel looks like a waste of time or a front office blunder.

I guess it is possible that there were no offers for Cassel that were close to what NE was asking for ,and then just dumped him off to KC in fear of actually having to hold on to him and pay the price of a franchise tag.

by Tuba on Feb 28, 2009 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, before they disclosed the draft picks, and I had heard it didn’t involve the +3 overall, I was thinking it was either a 2nd and 3rd or 4th. I don’t know what they were thinking. Maybe they don’t want a huge ammount of draft picks this year or something? They have 3 2nd rounders now, which is pretty crazy, but why they wouldn’t ask for a little extra is beyond me.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

Well, I wouldn't call it a waste of time

Because they ended up getting a high second round draft pick for a guy that had never started before last year, and wasn’t going to play this year, assuming Brady is healthy.

Don’t really think that’s a bad deal for the Pats, to be honest.

Happy for the Chiefs

And even happier for the Vikings, that we didn’t land Cassell. I doubt we’d’ve gotten him as cheaply as the Chiefs did, and I’ll be looking forward to watching Cassell’s performance in the year to come. Very interested.

by DCPurple on Feb 28, 2009 2:50 PM CST reply actions

Nah, don't think so

Pioli has a lot of familiarity with the Pats roster, and Vrabel will be a good veteran locker room guy that can help a young team learn how to win.

Idiotic

The Vikings can say all they want that Cassel wasn’t worth it, but I will go on record as saying I would have been more aggressive and traded a pair of 2nd Round picks or any reasonable combination of players and picks to get him. He is better than any of the Viking quarterbacks and we could have obtained him for a reasonable price.

by misterdizz on Feb 28, 2009 2:55 PM CST reply actions

Un-stinkin'-believable

Here we’ve been after Rosen-copter for TWO YEARS and Cassell gets traded to the Chiefs for ONE second round pick along with Vrabel? What are the Pats smoking first off and then what kind of drunken stupor is our front office in as this looks like first offer to Cassell and they take it!!!! Why didn’t our front office at least throw some effort into talks???? He would be heads and shoulders above what we’ve got right now. Boy, that really is disappointing.

by dougvikes on Feb 28, 2009 3:40 PM CST reply actions

Cassell isn’t worth that much, way over paid. He’s not a legit starter. I didn’t want Sage or Cassell, the QB crop was so WEAK this off season, everyone is over paying, we should have stood pat with Tavaris and not wasted draft picks on players that’ll turn the ball over more than Favre does.

by BacksThePack on Feb 28, 2009 3:44 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, the QB Market really was bad this season. Cassel has potential, I’ll give him that, but pretty much every QB has very valid questions about their abilities this offseason. I think Matt was worth the 2nd rounder at the very least, because he did show this season that if you get him a good O-line and a couple good recievers you don’t need to worry about the passing game. Bowe is probably excited about this. They just need to get somebody to play opposite him now.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 3:53 PM CST up reply actions

Glad he's a Chief

I don’t think the Vikes would have obtained him for that price and now we have the $$$ to sign TJ Whosyourmomma. Thigpen will be starting at the end of the year you watch and Cassel will be the highest paid backup in the league. Let’s see how many times he gets sacked behind this O-line.

by nmvikesfan on Feb 28, 2009 3:54 PM CST reply actions

Did any of you ever WATCH Cassel play???????????

His mechanics, instincts, throwing motion and decision-making sure looked light years better than Tarvaris’ to me, and I say that after actually watching them both, with an objective eye. How many of you guys who now sound off like “we didn’t need him anyway” actually watched some of his games before spouting all your “wisdom”. It sounds like sour grapes to me, and that is the legacy of this coaching staff and front office in regard to the quarterback mess we have now. I am as loyal as any of you, but at least I can be a man and admit our situation is lousy, and without a bonafide QB we are not going far.

Sour Cassell

I’ve watched Cassell play, and he looks good. In situ. And the environment to play in is a set piece that he’s been practicing in for years, with a top-notch supporting cast. Maybe he’s the next Montana and we’ll be sorry we didn’t get him… but maybe he isn’t, and that’s the problem. No one knows for sure whether or not Cassell was going to be worth the price tag that it appeared would have to be paid to get him. The Chiefs picked him up for a song, who knew? Something smells rotten there, but whatever, they got him, more power to them.

I don’t expect him to do half as good with the Chiefs for the simple reason that he won’t have the supporting cast he had in NE. He’s going from a top ranked team to a low ranked team, he’s going to have to learn to like the taste of the turf at Arrowhead Stadium, and accept that the fact that he no longer has a receiving corps that makes Randy Moss look average. The Vikes will probably be able to pick him up next year for even less than they paid for Rosenfels, if they want him.

But would Cassell have done as well in Minnesota as he did in NE (11-5)? I don’t think so. If he doesn’t do as well, then he’s no better than what we had with T-jack and Gus (10-6). And that’s not sour grapes, some of us have been leery of Cassell all along. Would the Vikes have gotten the sweetheart deal that the Chiefs got? I don’t think so.

In sum, I don’t think it’s a fair comparison at all, and whether I agree with you or not, it doesn’t put my manhood on the line :)

by DCPurple on Mar 1, 2009 12:30 PM CST up reply actions

Cassel does love ..

… the taste of tur. thats the only explenation i have for his incredibly high sack rate of 8.3% I bet that goes up next year, when he’s lining up behind the awful O-Line at KC, as opposed to the pretty good one he had in NE.

Will the Real Thor Please Stand Up ... ?

by the Real Thor on Mar 1, 2009 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

It's not just the picks, it's the moola

If I understand correctly no matter what Cassel is getting 15 million this year and still needs to sign a contract beyond that. He’s going to get a ton of money and he might be worth it but he could also be an awful money sucker. Now If Cassel was signed to a decent contract say 6-8 million a year for 3 or 4 then I would be pissed too. I would rather toy with TJack and Sage then have the money to resign Birk, possibly upgrade the O line and maybe even add an impact player like T.J.

Cassel was also throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker, that’s enough to make any QB look much better. Even look at Brady. He was always a solid QB and led his team to a lot of titles but just look at his statistics once you added those two. He threw 50 TD’s after never throwing for more than 28 previously. He threw for 4800 yards after previously throwing for 3529, 4110, 3692, and 3620 in the previous four seasons. A QB rating of 117.2 with a previous high of 92.3.

So it will be very interesting to see how the year goes for Cassel now that he doesn’t have the best WR tandem in the league. It really depends on how the Vikes use the cap room they’re saving in getting Sage over Cassel before I make my decision on whether I like this move.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Feb 28, 2009 5:03 PM CST reply actions

Sure did

Saw him look great against weak passing defenses and very poor against good ones. The Pats should have made the playoffs so he would have faced some great passing defense and then all this Cassel talk would stop. Why did NE give him away so cheap if he was that great? They even threw in Vrabel to make KC not think about changing their offer.

by nmvikesfan on Feb 28, 2009 5:07 PM CST reply actions

They shouldn’t have traded him. Apparently there was a three way deal going down. Broncos would have taken Cassel, traded Cutler to the Bucs, who’d have then sent something to the Pats. It probably would have been a better deal for the Patriots, AND it’d be a juicy story to add some spice to this free agency period.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 6:38 PM CST up reply actions

Cassell for Cutler?!? That’s got to be the biggest risk, lowest reward equation I’ve heard in a long time, lol.

by DCPurple on Mar 1, 2009 12:35 PM CST up reply actions

lol No one said it was a good idea, but according to the report that’s what would have gone down if they had reached Bellichik before he pulled the trigger on KC.

by Frost on Mar 1, 2009 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Questionable Moves

If it’s true, this will be the second questionable action by Bellichick, and that really makes me wonder about him… and wonder how many others there may have been that were never caught or made public. Is perhaps the best coach in the NFL actually a fraud and cheat who’s real skill is an ability to get around the system to obtain the right players? A depressing thought.

by DCPurple on Mar 2, 2009 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

What I'd be more upset with.

Is that the Vikes didn’t get in on Lito Sheppard. He’s making in the 3-4 million range the next three seasons. He’s pro bowl quality, only 27, and it is believed the Eagles got a conditional pick in 2010 and a midround pick this year. So depending on the details that could end up being a player the Vikes truly missed out on.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Feb 28, 2009 5:21 PM CST reply actions

totally agree

the vikes really missed out on Lito. It’s reported he got traded for a 5th and a conditional pick next year. Steal of a deal for the Jets. He’s a Philly guy. Wonder if Chilly even inquired about him. Probably not. But on the flip side, there had to have been some reason why Lito was benched last season. I know Samuels was brought in, but that doesn’t explain why Lito was in the dog house all year with Reid.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Feb 28, 2009 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

2nd and a 4th

The Chiefs traded their 2nd rounder for Cassel and Vrabel. The Vikings traded their 4th for Sage Rosenchopper. Wonder who got the best deal? I would have gladly given up a 2nd and a 4th for just Cassel. He is way better than Sage or T-Jack. Just look at his stats. Unfreakinbelievable. I guarantee the Vikings didn’t make a serious offer for Cassel because Childress thinks the Vikings don’t need to upgrade that position. It amazes me how stupid this guy is, yet he’s still a head coach in the NFL.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Feb 28, 2009 5:22 PM CST reply actions

according to http://blogs.nbcsports.com/home/

REPORTS: BRONCOS ENTERTAINED TRADING CUTLER
Posted by Mike Florio: Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:22 PM
Adam Schefter of NFL Network and Vic Lombardi of CBS4 in Denver report that the Broncos have been shopping quarterback Jay Cutler.

Per both reports, the Bucs and Broncos were trying to swing a three-way deal pursuant to which Matt Cassel would have been traded from the Pats to the Broncos, Cutler would have gone from Denver to Tampa, and the Patriots would have been compensated presumably by the Buccaneers.

According to Schefter, the Lions also approached the Broncos about a trade for Cutler.

And here’s where it gets interesting. Schefter’s version creates the impression that the Broncos didn’t initiate the talks, and merely responded to the offers presented. Vic Lombardi’s version suggests that the Broncos were and are shopping the eleventh overall pick in the 2006 draft.

“I’ve heard the rumors,” Cutler told Vic Lombardi. “I know what they’re trying to do. Even though I love Denver and I’d love to remain a Bronco, I know how this business works. If they want me to play somewhere else, so be it.”

Despite Cutler’s generally P.C. comments, Schefter contends that Cutler was angered by the news.

There’s a consensus in league circles that Cutler has plateaued after showing some improvement early in the 2008 season. He has been criticized in some circles for having a nonchalant demeanor.

The reality is that, whenever there’s a new coach, there’s a chance that he’ll want to pick his own quarterback. Regardless of whether the Broncos initiated the trade talks, the fact that the Broncos said anything other than “hell no” suggests that new coach Josh McDaniels wants to go in a different direction.

hmmm……

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Feb 28, 2009 5:32 PM CST reply actions

Boy would I love that

I was pissed when Denver traded up to get him in the draft because I thought he was falling right into our arms, but I am still very happy with who we got in that draft (Greenway). Nonetheless, I would love to see us make an offer for him if we could, along with bring in T.J., then all we’d need is a new coach and be Super Bowl bound…. nah, time to stop dreaming…

Lower Deck Tickets on 50 yard line behind Vikings bench = $119.00
Parking by the Metrodome = $25.00
Souvenir Soda = $6.50
Being there for 296 = Priceless

by Skol Vikes on Feb 28, 2009 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

I dunno. I guess the Broncos think he’s as good as he’s going to get. Granted, it’s still better than what we have. I didn’t even think he’d be available, but apparently they were entertaining the idea of trading him. It likely won’t happen now, though. They don’t have any servicable QB backup, they were only going to trade him if it meant getting Cassel.

by Frost on Feb 28, 2009 6:40 PM CST up reply actions

Cutler in Purple

Hmmmn… how could that be a bad thing? How much should the Vikes be looking to part with for a QB of his ability?

I can’t believe he’d be a real possibility, but it’s an entertaining thought. Very entertaining.

We need a center and a tackle more than Cutler, that said I can’t help wonder what Cutler’s asking price is.

Birk will be back

Now that Jason Brown is off the market, Birk will re-sign. RT is definitely a need, and will probably be drafted in the 1st round this year. How about this wild and crazy trade scenario… trade CT, a 1st and 3rd for Cutler and their RT Ryan Harris. He is a Minnesota native, and a 2nd year player. A Definite upgrade over Cook. Would we give up a lot in draft picks? Yes. But when you think about it, can you get a better QB in the 1st round at #22? No. Would losing Taylor hurt? Yes. But the gain from Cutler would out weigh the loss my Taylor immensely. It would fill all the needs of the team and give us the franchise QB we are looking for. I’d do it in a heartbeat if I could.
