Should Viking Fans Start Learning How to Spell Houshmandzadeh?

UPDATE:  Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer is reporting that Houshmandzadeh is planning on sticking to his deadline of making his decision this evening, and Judd Zulgad is reporting that it looks like he's staying in town.  The limo that brought him to Winter Park earlier has departed, and it appears as though "it is NOT headed down 494 and towards the airport."

Josh at Cincy Jungle has been all over this story all day long.  It looks like we're going to pick up the best WR in free agency for the second consecutive off-season.  The original post begins below.

Allow me to channel my inner Disney fan for a moment. . .

T.J. Houshmandzadeh
What a wonderful phrase
T.J. Houshmandzadeh
One pass-catching craze

He means "big upgrade"
For our offense's plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
Is he our big signeeeeeeeeeeee?  Quite possibly!
T.J. Houshmandzadeh

Man alive. . .if Tim Rice was dead, he'd be spinning in his grave at a high enough speed to burrow to the center of the earth.

Star-divide

But apparently Houshmandzadeh is still in Minneapolis.  He arrived yesterday after having visited with the Seattle Seahawks, and got the usual trip to dinner with the Vikings' higher muckety mucks.  I can only assume this included Zygi Wilf, Brad Childress, Darrell Bevell, a few players, and the proverbial cast of thousands.

I didn't really talk much about Houshmandzadeh in the days leading up to free agency, largely because I didn't thin we had a real shot at him.  I just assumed that a team like the Eagles would back an armored truck up to his house, tell him to take what he wants, and that he'd be out of Minnesota's reach.  Apparently, however, that hasn't been the case thus far.

According to Pro Football Talk, Houshmandzadeh. . .see, I figure if I type it enough times, it will drill the spelling into my head. . .will be making his decision this evening.  The Giants are also thought to be in the running for his services, as are most recent employers, the Cincinnati Bengals.  Our friends over at Cincy Jungle, however, seem to think that Houshmandzadeh's decision will find him wearing purple. . .and, as you can see in the linked post, he's not alone in his assessment.

Man. . .I'm downright giddy over here.  Signing Houshmandzadeh and the trade for Sage Rosenfels. . .which I'm feeling better about the more I think about it. . .should make the Vikings a much better offensive football team.  Yes, Housh is a possession receiver.  You know what?  The Vikings need that.  They got a very good deep threat last year in Bernard Berrian, and Houshmandzadeh could play the underneath complement to that.  He's also the kind of guy that Sidney Rice could learn a lot of good stuff from.  It would also allow Bobby Wade to move into the #3/slot receiver role, which he's always been the best suited for.

We'll be monitoring the situation from here as best we can. . .and if anything happens, you'll hear all about it right here.  Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, and keep hitting the F5 key for any updates!

Yep, I was frantically checking PFT, NFL.com, Star Trib, and even (shudder) ESPN to see if he had left MN yet, and I found nothing that said so. Apparently they’re giving him the Bernard Berrian treatment, refusing to let him leave. Zygi, I love you.

I seriously do love Zygi!

Best thing other than A.P, Allen, B.B, well best thing in our front office/owner category since Bud Grant! Doing great things Zygi. Love you like a younger grandpa… lol

Fingers Crossed

Along with other stuff :)) .

And if we get Housh (my compromise name), what’s that do for our draft prospectus?! Hah! It frees up that #1 pick for just about any one. I know we talk about BPA, but if the Vikes are suddenly WR-rich, we may be looking at BPA-Other-Than-WR/RB.

TJ still in Minny

The NFL channel just reported that TJ is still in Minneapolis visiting the team facilities and receiving the grand tour.

They said that Seattle, the NY Giants, and the Bengals are still showing interest. But it has to be a good sign that he’s still visiting with the Vikes. I’m hoping for good news on this front by the end of the day.

by Norse Force on Mar 1, 2009 11:15 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah, if he’s STILL in Minnesota, especially getting a tour, I’m sure he’s here to stay. I’m ready to chalk him up as signed already.

Top recieving corps

I gotta think this puts the Vikes in top 5 receiving class if they get Housh. I’d put Arizona, and New England comfortably ahead of the Vikes but other than that it’s kind of a crap shoot. Indy(mostly because of Wayne), Dallas, Pittsburgh, and possibly a few others would have arguments for the next spots but the Vikes would be right in the conversation as well. Talk about going from a weakness to a strength.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

B.B, Houshmandzadeh, Rice, Wade and...

Don’t forget Maclin or Harvin!!! I say Housh has a 3-4 year contract with us, so bring in Maclin, Harvin, Darrius Heyward-bey, and have them be our #2 with B.B! We gotta get Housh!

Housh..

I sure hope this goes through. It will replace the sick feeling in my stomach I had this morning when I saw KC scored Cassel AND Vrabel for a stinkin’ 2nd rounder.

by MAJTwister on Mar 1, 2009 12:25 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

KC-NE trade

Yeah, it seems like a bargain, but wait until that 35th overall pick of the draft rolls around. I don’t think Vrabel will help the Chiefs very much or for very long, and Cassel could become very mortalized away from the Patriots’ talent and system.

It is just enough to make Kansas Citians hopeful again, though.

Maybe the Vikings could trade for Thigpen now? He should be traded to a team that will allow him to compete for the starting job, in my humble opinion. Somebody needs a marginal starter with some potential.

pride

the vikes wont trade for Tyler b/c that would be pointing out the obvious mistake it was releasing him or trying to sneak him through waivers (whatever happened).

by Spartan99 on Mar 1, 2009 4:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The most recent update I'd found

…reported that TJ had been texting the Eagles some love.

As much as an upgrade at WR could help the Vikings, I’m not sold on a 30-ish FA (unless it’s for 1-2 years) if there is any real chance of drafting Maclin or Harvin in the first round. On the other hand, signing Housh would allow the team to draft a CB in the first round instead, and that would make me VERY happy.

Rosenfels couldn’t be had for a 4th rounder and Housh wouldn’t sign with the Vikes in this offseason last time I checked on Madden ‘09, for what little that’s worth.

by KC Viking on Mar 1, 2009 12:41 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

New Look KAO?

Cutler, Housh, Berrian, Shanko, AP… and who knows, maybe they can do it all while hanging on to CT as well… if so, well… damn… I mean… damn…

Zygi, please push to make all this happen, it’s in your hands now!!

by DCPurple on Mar 1, 2009 1:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

maybe.

I think Cutler is going to be hard to get. The rest is very likely to happen. The vikings will have to give up a decent player that the Broncos see as an above average starter or at the very least a 2nd round pick. I do understand why you would want Cutler, when he came out of college I thought he was the best nfl qb in the draft, clearly at this point I am correct. Also I think the vikings would have taken Cutler out of the draft if he was still avalable a few years ago, maybe they will finally get him. As for CT, I don’t think that they would be interested in tradeing for him. ANd by the way Shanko is nothing special.

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 1:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Shiancoe started to deliver last season. The game against the Falcons put him on the map mostly. Well.. Maybe the Arizona game did, after he had a “wardrobe malfunction.”

by Frost on Mar 1, 2009 1:51 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not saying he's terrable

Shiancoe is an average TE nothing more nothing less.

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 1:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If we had that line up, Shanko wouldn’t have to be special, just solid. And he looks to be coming together, if last season was any indicator.

by DCPurple on Mar 1, 2009 11:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

what.

The vikings just got Sage, why would they try to get Thigpen.

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 1:09 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Of the 3+ QBs on the roster,

…Tyler Thigpen will probably be better than one of them. The Vikings liked him well enough to draft him, but lost him while trying to add him to the practice squad (essentially as a 4th stringer). Thigpen put up better numbers than TJ ‘07 or seasoned veteran Gus ’08 while playing on a terrible team last year, and given TJ’s propensity to get hurt when he’s not awful anyway, a third QB could see the field in 2009.

It would definitely make far more sense for some other team to trade for him.

by KC Viking on Mar 1, 2009 3:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

$$$$$$$$$

you can’t pay big money to two backups. One of those guys would end up making 3 million for being a 3rd string QB.
the vikings had 32 miilion before free agency started.
29 after Sage
19 if they sign TJ Housh?????
and 14 after Thigpen
8 if they sign Birk
that only leaves 8 million for filling in any other holes

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 3:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Big $?

…for Thigpen? Hardly. He made $376,240.00 in 2008 according to SI.com, and wouldn’t be due a $4.7-5M increase. He’s not experienced enough to be an RFA let alone worth “big money”.

It bears repeating: It would definitely make far more sense for some other team to trade for him. We aren’t really arguing, right?

Just the fact that they used the #88 is suspicious to me.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Mar 1, 2009 2:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I’m excited too but even if we sign this guy we still have a multitude of unanswered question:

I’m very concerned about special teams going into next year and I’m not sold yet on the secondary. I like Williams, Winfield, even Griffin, but is Johnson for sure our man in place of Sharper? Is McCauley on the radar for the other corner spot? Is Ben Leber the best player we could possibly start at one of the OLB positions? The of course no one knows what our offense will be like. I’d like more imagination with the play calls but we’re talking about Childress here. I also don’t trust Rosenfels in any meaningful situation.

Seriously we shore up a perceived weakness but don’t really attack any of the questions going into next August.

by mjschaefer on Mar 1, 2009 2:53 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

First of all, the viking are aware of the problem in the secondary. Secondly, I’m expecting the viking to do draft a versitly corner in the 1st or 2nd round, that should take care that. Also E.J and Chad should be good enough that even with Lebar the starting Linebacker crue is pretty nasty. Ray Lewis and Mike Peterson are avalable but there old and expensive. Again the draft might be the answer. I’m not sure about the QB situation. Part of me wants to give TJ another chance and another part wants the vikings to get Cutler.

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 3:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What were the Cutler Vikings rumors anyway.

What do we possible have that would get us their franchise qb?

by LoveHate on Mar 1, 2009 3:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

there have only been rumors that Cutler is on the trade block. there has been no direct rumor that Cutler is comming to Minnesota.

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 3:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

and the vikings will sign 10 to 15 players to contracts that can fill in on special teams. special team players can be cheap so I really wouldn’t be worried about it at this point.

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 3:20 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It’s not the players it’s the coaching. I guess the coach is no longer there but they were awful at filling lanes last year.

I'll hold him down

i think Houshmandzadeh will sign with vikings because i’m hearing that he is going to sign with a team tonight he is still at Winter park and i’m loveing it geting Houshmandzadeh and Berrian should opean up some holes for AP, and CT the two biggest need then going into the draft RT wich is the biggest i just dont think there any good freeagent OT and Vikings need to re-sign Brik

Just a Thought

Reading between the lines here, but a west coast team could be any team that runs the “west coast” offense. Which if I’m not mistaken, most if not all the teams TJ is considering run some version of that
offense? Maybe he feels that with his skills, he could be really beneficial to that type of offense?

IF he signs...

what number do you think he will wear? 85, 86, 88, and 89 are available (I think) Would be kind of funny if he chose 85, wouldn’t it

I know!

At the beginning of the off season, I didn’t think TJ would be an option, so I didn’t even think about it. But now that it is so close, I’m gonna feel like Will Farrel in Step Brothers when he got the raw hide wallet instead of the hulk hands!

ha ha.. a great reference to step brothers, cant think of a better anology

Jared Allen is to football what Jason Voorhees is to Lake Crystal.

nice quote

I just saw Friday the 13th last night. Overall, I’d give it a C, but with all the boobies in it, It automatically goes up a level to a B+

I should be doing something else instead of this

But it’s Sunday in the NFL Offseason, before baseball, before NBA and NHL playoffs and Tiger’s out.

Here's a copy of what I read

There were indications that Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh might not make the call until Monday morning instead of Sunday night as the Bengals wait word on the fate of their third all-time receiver.

One thing is certain. The Vikings are making a huge push to get a Houshmandzadeh deal done before he leaves the Twin Cities and it doesn’t look like he’s leaving any time soon. The red-carpet treatment from Zygi Wilf, the Vikings owner, began Saturday when he dispatched one the club’s private planes to pick up Houshmandzadeh in Seattle, and has been characterized as “a full-court press.”
This is from a Bengels site. I guess if he is spending the night in Minnesota it has to be a good sign. Zigi proboly got him and the family in a nice suite and letting his kids go nuts at the Mall of America

WTF!

Just sign or move on, TJ! If he signs, that would be a huge upgrade for the Vikings. But it’s not like we’re in trouble if he doesn’t sign. Either way, just make a decision already!

Gut Feeling

I think an agreement is done. TJ flew the coop in Seattle pretty quick to make me think he liked what he saw. He could have been running to another team by now. I think they are just doting the i’s and crossing the t’s and planning an afternoon press conference. Otherwise why would he still be in Mpls. ? The warm weather :) Something is up!

He wants to win as well. That’s why Seattle would be of no interest. Holmgren is gone, they have no other players…you can count Hasselbeck maybe. Maurice Morris had potential but he is gone.

Seattle doesn’t have the passion.

that do think about the cassel trade

would you give up a 2nd round pick and maybe Ben Lebar for cassel?

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 7:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well, it appears he is spending the night in the T.C.’s, so the little voice is telling me this is a very positive sign. Now, if the other voices would just shut up…….mwa hahahahaha

lol God this guy is loving the attention, I think. He’s definitely milking it at this point. He probably has his mind made up already.

you could read this two seperate ways.

Carl Landry had 12 points off the bench for Houston. … After a day of negotiating with free agent WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf and vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman watched the game from courtside seats.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jRpHoeF_BbCAiZcgEvPOQU8VwmwQD96LK4O83

Is it saying that Zigi Wilf and Rich Spielman are watching the game, or is it saying that TJ, Zigi, And Rick are watching the game?

by Wrench on Mar 1, 2009 8:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The question is did they seem happy cus they had rapped up TJ?

Jared Allen is to football what Jason Voorhees is to Lake Crystal.

by SDviking on Mar 1, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

pretty sure

they are watching it without him, although I don’t think that means anything bad. I hope anyways

Ugh, Come on

Why is he waiting until Monday. Now I’m going to have Hakuna Matata stuck in my head another 24 hours.

Hey, now

Would you rather I have busted out “Someday My Prince Will Come” or something like that?

Hakuna Matata is a nice little song. There are far worse things to have stuck in your head. And if we sign him, you’ll have the new lyrics in your head, too. (-:

pretty sure

the comma would be after ‘negotiating’ and there wouldn’t be a ‘with’, if TJ were at the game.

It says it's down to the Vikings and Bengals...

I understand wanting to be loyal to the Bengals, but Houshmazilli is getting up in years, and Cinci isn’t winning any titles anytime soon.

I honestly did post this comment before reading the whole thing, even though it sounds like I blatantly ripped off one of the paragraphs in the story.

This article pretty much sums up the contracts. If we lose him over $2 mil (I believe it’s $2 mil total, not per year) I will be sick.

Hopefully the Vikes throw a little icing on the cake tomorrow morning to seal this deal.
