Should we pursue Torry Holt?

I was thinking it might be a great idea to attempt to aquire the freshly-released former Ram, if we can get him at the right price. In one sense, he'll be 33 next year and his numbers took a major hit last season. (796yds, 3TD) On the other hand, we have this proven stud reciever who played on an awful Rams team that had an injured Mark Bulger/washed up Trent Green combination. I believe he will be coveted by other teams, and wouldn't be suprised to see him wanting top dollar on a short-term deal.  I think the purple should strike. Any thoughts on this?

Certainly not opposed but Harrison might command less $.

Yes, but...

Would be a good move short term, but would rather see a major play for Boldin who has plenty of gas in the tank left and also more playmaking ability than Holt. Could get Holt pretty cheap and would be a solid #2 receiver behind Berrian.

Not Boldin...

His price will be too high, both in terms of material cost and, more importantly, in what we’d have to give up draft-wise.

YES!

But don’t break the bank for him either. It would be great to have a pro’s pro here to teach our youngsters on what it takes to be an NFL reciever. Rice and Allison need to learn how to run precise routes and how to make it out of there breaks. Holt could also teach Rice a little bit on how to stay healthy and Allison how to hang on to the ball.

by nmvikesfan on Mar 14, 2009 1:17 AM CDT reply actions

Yes and pay him a little less than Housdjfdkjfdkljmah …why not? Holt knows he will see less coverage with AP in the backfield …why not once again….

We are not picking a WR first unless someone falls and we are sure a OL we like will be there with 2nd rounder

by majinman on Mar 14, 2009 1:35 AM CDT reply actions

Yes.......

and I dont think he will demand near as much as Housh, but still worth a more then a few pennies.

Yes

Mainly because drafting wide receivers seems dicey. (See Troy Williamson a.k.a Sir-drops-a-lot)

PLEASE STOP W/ THE WR TALK!!!

Fellow Purple Peeps,

Please let’s stop talking about adding WR’s…
We still don’t have a QB. Vikes, should be thinking of a QB NOW, so we can WIN NOW!

Add, the add’t WR in the draft with 1st round pick of HARVIN or NICKS.
OR…maybe fill it with HOLT or HARRISON later after the other needs are addressed.

I’m a QB and I know how much we need a QB. That’s, That and if the Vikes aren’t looking to get a QB in some “secret meeting”—then I’ll come out of retirement!! At least I can get us to the Super Bowl!!!

Let Me Get This Right?!

You are saying that there is no sense in improving the positions that we can improve because we can’t improve another position?!

This thinking would really hurt our chances to even get back to where we were last year. The passing game is made from the talents of virtually every position on the offense. The OL must block. The RBs must keep Defenses honest with hard running inside, catch passes, and block. The receivers must create separation and run precise routes. The QB must throw good passes, create plays when things break down, and protect the ball. The coaches must find weaknesses in the opposition so all the other players can do their part.

The point is that the passing game is made up of about 20 people in total. In my opinion, only about 10-12 of them are doing a good job on a regular basis, and many fans act like the only way we can improve our pass game is by adding a really good QB (like they are just falling from trees to begin with).

Would the passing game improve if our OL did a better job of protecting the QB?
Would the passing game improve if our receivers, as a unit, stayed healthy and were more consistent?
Would the passing game improve if our coaching staff did a better job of putting our players in a position to succeed?

The bottom line is that we need to improve the passing offense where we can. With the players available this offseason we should be able to improve the OL, receivers, even perhaps the FB, but there isn’t crap in the way of a QB out there.

Sometimes you just have to do what you can do to improve things. If you want to improve QB play, you can improve the people around him. With receivers who get open more often and blockers that give him more time, the passing game will improve.

You can't underestimate the importance of a good quarterback

If Tjacks passes were on target and he could hit receivers in stride the entire offense would look better. There is no point in putting alot of money into a great receiver if Tjack is going to consistently be inaccurate.

by njcathey on Mar 14, 2009 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I guess that would be a concern if he were consistently inaccurate. — If you have proof to support that I would love to see it.

Improving the play of the OL with the addition of another quality receiver would only serve to further improve his accuracy numbers which are already quite solid when comparing him to other QBs in our offense and others around the league.

See, in Jackson’s last 13 games he has been over 60% in 10 of them. That is FAR from being “consistently inaccurate”. In fact, it is close to being “consistently accurate” by standards used for NFL QBs today.

Improving the quality of players around the QB will only further improve the play of the QB. It’s a simple, undeniable, FACT.

by Forty-Four on Mar 14, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Absolutely.

It makes me wonder if people who comment about Jackson’s supposed poor play have seen a Bears, Seahawks, Lions, Chiefs, Raiders, Redskins or even a game where Brett Favre was the QB in recent years.

by Bjorno on Mar 14, 2009 6:23 PM CDT up reply actions

There is plenty on these forums about the QB situation.

But there is no news, other than the Cutler rumors, that a viable, Franchise-type QB is available anywhere. So we are talking about a guy who is a great player, a good guy and still has some gas in the tank.

Hey Fran,

Let’s say you are on a long trip in your car. It starts blowing white smoke and generally loses power. You bring it into the shop and they tell you that you have a blown head gasket and your right front wheel bearing is about to separate and the wheel will fall off.

You have 250 miles to go, and the mechanic tells you the car will likely run for another 500 miles before it dies with the head gasket the way it is, but there is no way to know how long the Wheel bearing will last. He does not have the gasket you need in stock, but tells you there might be a shop on the way that has the gasket and can fix it on the way.

You are on your way to Miami, for the Biggest event of your life.

You could fix the wheel bearing with the cash you have and continue on your journey, most likely finding the head gasket you need along the way. Or, you can say F@*& it and not fix the wheel bearing, wait until you find the head gasket you need, only to find out that the only place that has the wheel bearing you need is the place you just left.

What do you do?

Man, that started out as being a simple analogy, and morphed into something way longer than it needed to be.

by Bjorno on Mar 14, 2009 1:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think this is entirely accurate

I’m assuming the head gasket is analogous to the QB and the wheel barring represents the receivers. In that case, the only way to evaluate the wheel barring would be to replace the head gasket and see what happens. I don’t think I saw a receiver catch a pass in stride once in the entire 2008 season. These guys could be be awesome if they were given a chance to catch a ball from a real nfl quality qb. I don’t think anyone can definitively say we need an upgrade at the wr position from looking at last years performance. Now I wouldn’t mind seeing a Housh or a Holt hang their hat in Minnesota, but I do think the most important place to spend some money is getting a qb that is more accurate and doesnt make his receivers stop to catch the ball, or try to catch it behind their bodies on almost every throw.

by njcathey on Mar 14, 2009 4:29 PM CDT up reply actions

PFFFFFT!!!

Did Jackson kick your dog or something?

You Kicked My Dog

“catch it behind their bodies on almost every throw.” Pathetic claim which is unsubstantiated and subsequently untrue.

more accurate and doesn’t make his receivers stop to catch the ball

Other bad passes by Jackson

by Forty-Four on Mar 14, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but...

When he’s not accurate, he’s really inaccurate! Or something.

You can hardly waste time rebutting all of the short sighted critism on the web. Those whose job it is evaluate and develop talent do so for a reason. It’s unfortunate a division championship hasn’t garnered these guys any benefit of doubt or breathing room from the critics who apparently could be doing better, but for some unknown reason haven’t been able to get an interview.

by LoveHate on Mar 14, 2009 7:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Umm obviously you weren’t watching too many games, because I saw PLENTY of passes that hit the WR in stride. From Frerotte and Jackson both. I mean, yes, there were inaccurate throws at some point, but you’re making a ridiculous hyperbole.

To: Bjorno>Car Analogy.

Hey Bjorno,

I cannot comment on the “Car analogy”, as an expert … as I ride a Bicycle! … a Purple Schwinn to be exact… with big white-wall tires, a fat seat and a horn—-just like Pee Wee Herman owned.

Thanks. though—-and I’ll remember all of this, when in December we’re fighting to make the playoffs with the “wheel barring” operating at 100%—as we continue our journey in search of “the head gasket”…

however, when I reach Miami for the biggest event of my life, I’ll probably find others from Pittsburgh, Indy, NE, Philly, Arizona, etc….that have beaten me to this big event.

As mentioned in the oddly sorted reply that ended up below this one, or after the other guy if someone else replies...

It’s not that we don’t need to fix the head gasket, or QB situation eventually.

But there is nobody available that is good enough to make a run for at QB.

So you take the best available player at a position that you need and position yourself for another QB option.

by Bjorno on Mar 15, 2009 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't over-analyze it.

The analogy is not saying that we don’t need to fix the head gasket eventually. It is saying that we don’t necessarily need to do it right now.

There is a good wide receiver on the market right now, and a bunch of middle of the road QB’s still available. Those QB’s will most likely still be available at the end of free agency.

But Holt will not.

We need to make a move for the best available player at a needed position, and right now that person is Torry Holt.

by Bjorno on Mar 14, 2009 6:18 PM CDT reply actions

With ya Bjorno

Fix the bearing go and get H.G. fixed down the road,no telling what might fall in our lap round 6.
