Vikings sign Paymah
From ProFootballTalk:
VIKES WILL PAY PAYMAH’S RENT
Posted by Mike Florio on March 14, 2009, 6:27 p.m. EDTThe “Paymah Rent” tour finally has ended.
According to Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, free-agent cornerback Karl Paymah has agreed to terms with the Vikings.
Paymah, who previously played for the Broncos, visited multiple teams before finally arriving in Minnesota.
So either he was tired of traveling, or the Vikings offered him more than any other team.
Paymah signed a one-year deal, and he plans to test the market again in 2010. He thinks that, with the coaching of defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and secondary coach Joe Woods, his career will take off.
“I got the talent,” Paymah said, “but not the guidance.”
But we hope that he’s getting good guidance from his agent. Before Karl presumes that he’ll launch another “Paymah Rent” tour in 2010, he needs to keep one important thing in mind: Absent a new CBA (or a clause in his contract promising that the team won’t try to hold him in place), Paymah will be only a restricted free agent next year, because he won’t have the requisite six years of service.

no Super Bowl ring... just BORE-RING!
Whoopedee dooo! We signed one of the league’s many mediocre defensive backs, a guy who most of never heard of until about two weeks ago. A guy who we seemingly overpaid. Wheeee!! So far, this has to be one of the dullest off seasons ever, and I almost cannot believe how little the organization has done to build on last season. In fact they have regressed, in my opinion. What the Hell is going on? Do they really want the fans to jump ship? It almost looks that way. If nothing else, this off season has simply been BORING. At worse we are heading for 8-8 really fast.
What the Hell?
What is wrong with you guys? Why do you think we can sign every high profile FA that hits the market? It’s just not possible. Hell, we tried signing Houshmandzadeh, but he shot us down. What are we supposed to do about that? The money we offered him was already to high.
Regardless, you do NOT win championships through free agency. Just take a look at the Redskins.

Reading your reply makes me laugh
I almost can’t believe the over-reaction of you post. Who said we have to “Sign EVERY high-profile FA that hits the market?” I said nothing of the sort. It is my opinion that there have certainly been a few worthwhile FA’s available that would improve this franchise’s chances for next year. And we signed Paymah? Just not very invigorating to the bottom line, or the fan base. I don’t care about one individual like Houshmandzadeh. But they had better be working on a significant trade and bring in Holt for an interview and exam. I can have my opinion and I am not excited about Rosenfels at all, think Jackson is a horrible mistake, and wonder how committed this coaching staff and front office is to actually winning a ring. Patriots signed Galloway, and watch what he does for that team. I assure you that organization will maximize his contribution and his impact. They’ll probably win another Bowl while we might finish first (almost by default due to scheduling and crap division) and get embarrassed in the 1st round, at best.
I’m just tired of watching other, better franchises outthink and outmaneuver my team. It gets real old after thirty-nine years of it…. trust me.
Yes I did overreact. It’s frustrating to see how upset people are about this year’s offseason. Spielman has said all along that this would not be a busy free agency. You know why? Because you build a team through the draft. Not to mention the weak FA class this year. And how can you say our coaches and front office do not care about winning? Really? I’m pretty sure their jobs depend on it. They know a lot more about football than me and you, and are going to make decisions they think will improve our team. Do you know if Torry Holt would even fit in a west coast offense? He’s played in a Mike Martz and Scott Linehan offense for most of his career. Very different schemes than the one we run.
Also, it’s a two way street. Do you know if Torry Holt would even WANT to play for us? Houshmandzadeh didn’t. Our QB’s aren’t that attractive to a top flight receiver. Would Orlando Pace want to play on the right side of the line? Do we really know if the Vikings contacted a guy like Galloway or not? Not everything get’s leaked to the press…
Once again, I’m sorry for overreacting in my first reply…And I hope I don’t sound to negative in this one. It’s hard to convey a certain tone in writing sometimes.

No need to apologize
You have every right to your opinion. I was trying to clarify my concern. I know quite a bit about the NFL and football in general, and I know that you need to utilize ALL the available channels (Free Agency, the Draft and Waivers) to build from. Obviously the draft is the backbone of ongoing success; BUT, it is not the ONLY avenue for enhancing the team’s personnel. My point is that, while some of your comments may ring true (I don’t know how an individual like Torry Holt is thinking or if he could adjust to a different scheme) I would also never assume any of those roadblocks are insurmountable! C;mon, there are two sides to every story and I never said anything that implied I was arrogant enough to “know” which player might fit or who would be signable. I am merely looking at the Vikings as objectively as possible, and I have significant concerns at key positions on the roster – and if they ONLY rely on the draft to plug those holes, then this is foolhardy. I don’t care who we draft, they will most likely NOT have immediate impact – and that’s the point here. The timing is also a major part of building a franchise (assuming a championship is the goal; maybe this organization is content to be a playoff team and not a Super Bowl champ – there is a difference in attitude necessary) and Childress will be fired after the season.
If this franchise truly wants a ring, they need to recognize that there is a window of opportunity open to them right now, and that means they need to use every means available to put the right players in those positions of concern (i.e., QB; RT, WR, CB and Special Teams overall) I want the Vikings to win as much as anyone, having been a loyal fan since 1969! But I am perplexed by the lack of activity on the Free Agent market this year, especially given their financial situation with ample funds to work with.
Before someone else insults my intelligence, please don’y suggest I am saying to “sign ANYONE” just to spend money. Please, do me that favor and please give a shred of respect for my experience. I am merely concerned that what activity I see is not addressing those issues I see as problematic; and I do NOT believe we can draft 2-3 IMMEDIATE IMPACT rookies. Even if we lucked out and a couple of draftees make the starting lineup, that may not be even close to enough. I feel that the QB situation is a major weakness, and until that is remedied I cannot have faith in the team being Championship caliber yet. But…as I hope I clarified, that’s also only one significant position to reinforce. WHEN are they going to address the other areas…in the DRAFT??? Oh, did we acquire some addiional early picks I don’t know about? If so, maybe there’s hope… and I am just ignorant.
HIS over-reaction? lol You used the phrase Whoopedee dooo! lol
Personally i like the signing. Many sources say hes an ‘untapped talent.’ I think he could be a nice little addition, (and an almost certain upgrade from Benny Sapp.)

you do NOT win championships through free agency
…unless it is your backup QB who formerly had been bagging groceries.
…unless the QB in question is named Brad Johnson
…or Trent Dilfer (but not because of him, obviously, but the Ravens had relied on FA 100% that year)
…unless your team has Deion Sanders’ services
…or those of Plaxico Burress or Kawika Mitchell
…or Jerome Bettis…too many to list, really.
Why is jerome Bettis
on this list? Bettis had been playing in Pitt for 10 yrs by the time they won the Super Bowl.

I think the point was...
You can’t COMPLETELY build through free agency; you have to use the draft primarily and use free agents as a supplement.
The ‘Skins try to completely build their team through big spending, and it doesn’t seem to work. Home grown teams, like the Steelers, bring in a few guys and draft the rest, and it seems to work. That’s the way I took it anyway.

Skol Vikings!
Woot Woot!
Come on now..
Do you honestly think those teams won only because of those players? I didn’t say that free agents are always a bad idea.. Hell, I think we were pretty active the last three years. We can’t do that every year.
by PurplePeopleEaters on Mar 16, 2009 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions
No, but...
Those teams didn’t win solely because of those players, but FA was definitely an important part of the recipe more often than not (to the best of my recollection, anyway).
That may be good news for the Vikes, who haven’t been as successful at drafting lately and have added quality players via FA (Winfield, Sharper, Pat Williams, Madeiu Williams, Leber, Berrian, Allen, Hutchinson, Chester Taylor and/or any Viking fullback in the past 2 years, maybe Bobby Wade and Shiancoe count as quality players…that’s almost half of our starters!). Hopefully, the Vikings are more in line with the SB teams which acquired 45-55% of their starters via FA rather than the teams which acquired 45-55% of their starters through FA and became an expensive mess.
It's a decent signing
Hey we finally brought someone in and signed them from another team. He is good on special teams, remember how bad we were last year? I like the signing because it puts Marcus McCauley on notice. He has been a bust for all the talent he has maybe this will light a fire under him now that he has to fight for his job and earn it.
Good Special Teams sign
My reports from a good souce says Paymah is very good. Yes, I would like to see other move to bolster the team but lets look at some things regarding Paymah
1. The Vikings probobly choose the 1 year deal as he will be an UFA. If he doesn’t work. They aren’t obligated. If he shines. They have a right to match an offer. Good deal for both player and team. *Maybe a little too much $ but if he compliment sHeath on ST’s it is a deal.
2. He played for a crappy D in Denver. Leading me to believe that puts extra pressure on the secondary. So they start shuffling the secondary around and opt to go with the higher paid youngstet (rookie) no matter how bad they are they don’t want to make their high picks look bad *Remind you of T-Jax? or Cook?
3. Paymah has great speed which we need badly on ST. He thrives better in cover 2, he has great confidence in himself and works very hard. I could esaily see him giving Sapp a run for his position. Sapp is lazy and thinks only of himself on the field. Look back on his stupid antics on the field that cost us in games. Paymah will make the hit before making selfish decisions to make an “iffy” pick.
I certainly hope we make some more moves, but don’t knock a Paymah signing
What if we could get Pace to sign a 2 year with a 3rd year option?. Does Holt want to play with oour QB’s? Are the Vikings sitting on Garcia til he gets no offers than get him at a bargain basement price?
Frost and I debated the draft issue and I floated his way on one thing after studying OT’s. There is a consensus that there are a lot of potential 2nd rounders that are game ready. More than many other years. Get the best available at round 1 and move up in round 2 to get the OT. There will be a big gap between the big 4 and 2nd round OT’s.

Question?
Being I was in the hospital a long time last year I wanted to know if we do a live blog during the draft? I was turned on to this great site after I was mentally and physically ready to get back on line but that was long after the draft.
I enjoy talking with all of you and I am a draft day fanatic and hope I can join in the fun if we do that.
Have a blessed day everyone. and Skol Vikings!

Just More Impatience
Answer me this…
If the Vikes had signed housh, and then the highest payed LT in FA, and then the highest paid DB on the market…
What would the Vikes do if Cutler does become available? We wouldn’t have the option of a big draft day move at all. I just don’t get how shortsighted many Viking fans are.
Free Agency and the offseason is not a sprint to use up every resource you have. Spend all your cash today and you may just miss out on the deal of the century.
It’s not as if we entered this offseason looking to find replace half our roster. We are just a couple of smart moves away from being a really good football team.
*+1*
No one has argued any particular value the Vikings have missed out on. Just a general malaise of having few transactions.
How many moves have been made by teams with similar or better records than the Vikings? Free Agency has been slow all over and for a reason.
If this team weren’t focused on the draft just a month out, there would be a serious problem.
Amen
Forty-Four’s right. The reason we may not have heard of any big moves by the Vikes is that they don’t want to shoot their wad before draft day. Remember that Jared Allen wasn’t signed until April of last year. I know this sounds old but be patient…
Is that you Chuck?
If so. I spoke with you in Tampa super bowl week. Hello again. If not. Then I’m gulible.
Good viewpoints tho.
John Clayton reports that no teams are big on FA QB’s. They seem content to stay with what they have before spending big $.They seem to be waiting on like you said-deals! None of them are worth a big spending spree. I still think Leftwitch might have something to offer, but then again don’t spend the bank gambling hin. Deals will come at QB if we choose to go that direction.

Good Point Lovehate
I confess I was one who became frustrated with our FA ateempts, or lack thereof. Reasonable mind here see exactly what you and 44 speak of. The overall picture. If we do enough now without breaking the bank or throing away picks we secure young palyers and keep cap $ for hopefully a better group of heelpful players next season. I still think as time passes the bargaining price goes down on a couple players who might help now but not at a stupid asking price.
The more we look at the big picture, maybe management is doing the smart thing. I sure hope so
Meh...
Brings depth and competition, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, with Gordon coming off an injury, and Benny Sapp one inopportune 15 yard penalty from driving me insane.
I agree that the off season has been underwhelming, but really, the Vikes didn’t have a lot of needs coming into the off-season. The defense is pretty much set, save depth, which was addressed. The offense needed a QB and arguably a RT, so it was a matter of holding serve on current team members that were hitting the market, and that turned out 2/3 for the guys I thought the Vikes should have kept, keeping Jimmy and Farwell and letting Matt Birk walk.
We can argue about whether or not Rosenfels was the right move, but QB was addressed. Sage doesn’t set my world on fire, but at worse he’s a younger more durable Gus, and at best he and TJ push each other for the starting job, and whoever wins is a top 15 QB. And really, to make a deep playoff run, they just need a good, not great, QB.
Thoughts on the Vikings, Buckeyes, and Cardinals

QB's
Lots of teams have made or won the Super bowl with mediocre QB’s. Grossman, Johnson, Plunkett(a little above mediocre but not a superstar), Delomme and Doug Williams. That is not to knock him being the 1st black QB to win the SB but not really a superstar. So if Sage blossoms into something better than what we have had and the supporting cast does their job-who knows
I do consider one thing with Sage. He has never come into a camp with the idea of him being #!. Maybe that will make a difference. Not sold yet. Just looking on the optomistic side I guess.
Paymah's stats?
Can anyone confirm this? According to NFL.com, Paymah played in the game against Miami last season and recorded 13 tackles and an interception??? I watched the highlights of this game and they didn’t even mention the guy’s name. I suppose this’ll be a battle for the nickel pos. between Paymah, Gordon, and Sapp.
Were they passing tackles?
I wish tackles were broken down into run play tackles and pass play tackles because of this very thing. (I also wish catches & TDs allowed were real NFL stats rather than Madden stats, but oh well.) 13 passing tackles and an INT means that the offense picked on him and mostly got what they wanted except for the INT. 13 run play tackles and an INT means that the offense either didn’t throw his way much (and/or completed a few that got away from him for TDs) and when they did he made them Paymah.
He must've gotten picked on.
I was thinking he was most likely being picked on, cuz he hasn’t actually started many games at all, but he must’ve been playing the number 2 cb that day. Thanx for the input….I just wanted to see a second opinion.

Paymah is a good zone CB
but he doesnt have the skills to play man coverage! Good pick up though he is a good player when used right!
