WR options (poll)

Housh and Washington off the board so will the MN Vikings make a move to acquire another Wide Receiver?  I have moved past disappointment and anger and am now looking ahead.  I am not even sure where WR really is on our priority list but it seems reasonable to assume that having identified this as a need that we will be active somehow to fill the WR need.   Personally I would rather not spend a darft pick unless the best player available is a WR.

i would sign laveranues coles but i would also draft one if one of the top WR where there at 22 i would defently Peria Jerry if he is still there i would take him Pat is getting old for football but if he is not i would draft Hakeem Nicks or Jeremy Maclin

Yeah!

I love Hakeem Nicks, and I hope our powers that be are impressed by him too. He is that big possession guy we desperately need.

Nicks

Exactly! Or Harvin, he can solve or WR and Return Specialist Needs.
But I would Lean towards getting Nicks.

by LAviking on Mar 2, 2009 10:55 PM CST up reply actions

Plus

Nicks was really good on NCAA Football 09 (I was UNC for my Dynasty because the Gophers were rated so bad). That has to count for something, right? :)

Surprisingly good options available

I know Galloway and Harrison are getting old but both can still produce especially in the roles the vikings need. Harrison quietly had a decent year last year with 60 receptions all while recovering from a knee injury and competing with Dallas Clark and Reggie Wayne for balls, not to mention Gonzales and Addai. I think Marvin has something left in the tank and could upgrade the Vikes.

There are no more top flight guys but there are guys out there who would upgrade our wide receiver corp. I think if I were the Vikes I’d look into Laverneus Coles or see if they might be able to work out a deal with the Saints to sign Lance Moore. He’s a restricted free agent and I don’t know what level of contract he was offered so I’m not sure what kind of pick the vikes might have to give up but it might be worth it to get a young possession receiver to complement Berrian.

Either way there are options out there, however I want nothing to do with Devery Henderson, big play threat only and we already have a better version of him in Berrian.

  1. Coles
  2. Moore
  3. Harrison

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Mar 2, 2009 7:41 PM CST reply actions

I like Harrison, yet

He is in the twilight of his career. If this had been 5 years ago, oh hell yes. But now, no, this I would pass on. Coles, second choice. I say go for Henderson, keep Rice as 3rd and on special teams. Maybe Wade just incase but would be expendable, everyone else, see ya.

Harrison left Indy because he wants more money…I’m not sure he is worth the price.

Coles

Coles is 3 months younger than Houshmandzadeh

by halfchest on Mar 3, 2009 12:04 AM CST up reply actions

Henderson

I think he will come cheaper than most. I think he filled in well when Colston was out and made some plays that looked more than just a deep threat. Although he does tend to look for that big one too much. He might be coached into running shorter patterns-if we had some offensive coaches. Oh! They are just that-offensive!
Coles-maybe. I like the idea of Jayson Taylor. Package a trade to Denver with Edwards, T-jax and a 2 or 3 rounder for Cutler.
PS= Here I had hopes that Houshbag was using his head to think over his choice. Seattle will be no good. TJ just joined ageing vets, mediocre core players and a team trying to find some youth. They might be a little better but with no RB they will not be what they used to be

by CitrusFLViking on Mar 2, 2009 8:01 PM CST reply actions

Isn’t it the deep threat that is going to keep safeties from habitually crowding the line of scrimmage?

by LoveHate on Mar 2, 2009 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

You don't have higher draft pick option

They can still get Harvin in the first round. Deep threat and a playmaker.

by Josh_D on Mar 2, 2009 8:05 PM CST reply actions

Harvin

If he is still around at #22 odds are he is best available talent and the Vikes should probably draft him. Go watch some YouTube videos, the kid is playmaker. I’d like to sign a capable veteran OT(possibly John Sinclair from the under the Bears nose) which would make the vikings more comfortable drafting a WR.

by Spartan99 on Mar 2, 2009 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

Henderson

is just another Sidney Rice.. hes been feeding off of Colston’s double teams and the onumber 2 WR.. i cant remmeber his name tho, had him in FF… but i dont think much of him

Lance Moore?

In AP I trust

by FarvaForTheVikings on Mar 2, 2009 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

Mark Clayton. He can work underneath. He’s got pretty decent hands. Not a troublemaker or a diva.

by mjschaefer on Mar 2, 2009 9:47 PM CST reply actions

Marvin didn’t leave Indy cause he wanted more money, he was cut.

I was sold on Houshouldabeenwearinpurple because BB already stretches the field and he was billed as the big, speedy, precise route running, sure handed playmaker who can execute the interim catch (more than 5 yards less than 40 yards).

Not sure if Marvin will even play, and I have read some things about Coles not having the best attitude and to be honest I don’t know a darn thing about Hendersen.

Who is Lance Moore and why do you like him?

Ps I hope the reality of his mistake is dawning on Housh now. You coulda been a contender kid.

Lance Moore stepped up for the Saints in the absence of Colston.

by mjschaefer on Mar 2, 2009 9:52 PM CST up reply actions

He's a solid possession reciever

The guy is a good route runner and is a goto guy for short quick routes. We’ve got our deep threats in Berrian and Rice what we need is a guy who can be out there every down and catch 80 to 90 balls a year. He started out last year as a backup but ended up starting with the injury to Colston. He ended up with 79 catches and over 900 yards last year. Given he did have Brees throwing to him but he also had tons of other recievers to fight for catches like Colston, Henderson, and David Patten.

He was offered a 2nd round tender by the Saints. So this means the Vikes would have to give up their 2nd round pick and make an offer large enough that the Saints wouldn’t match it. He’s young and could be had for a decent price hopefully. I disagree with the people so high on Henderson. To me he’s a product of having other better receivers (moore, colston) drawing coverage away so he could break deep gains. I just don’t think he’s the type of receiver the Vikes should be looking for. They need a good hands guy that will make a mediocre QB look better. TJ was probably the best option but I see Moore, Coles, and even Marvin Harrison being the Vikes best options. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what they do though.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

by halfchest on Mar 3, 2009 12:23 AM CST up reply actions

BB's Lack of Speed

Berrian isn’t bad, has good hands and all, but he doesn’t have breakaway speed. I know a lot of folks are sold on him, especially since that 99 yard TD, but if you look closely at that play, he was almost caught from behind. That happens a lot to BB, he gets chased down, or the secondary drapes all around him like a second uniform. The only time he gets free to make his catches is when the secondary screws up, turns away at the wrong moment, and BB can take advantage of that.

I think it’s great that he’s in Purple, he’s a solid #2 and maybe a bit better than that, but he lacks breakaway speed and that keeps him from being a premier #1 WR.

by DCPurple on Mar 3, 2009 8:49 AM CST up reply actions

I was just responding to hickenizgriz about who the #2 Saints receiver was when I mentioned Lance Moore. I don’t think he’s even available.

Moore is a restricted free agent

So the Saints could match anything a team offers him.

“Buccaneers re-sign WR Mark Clayton”

Hmm guess I am confused per the apparent error in the Star Trib headline.

Mark Clayton of Baltimore?

by aceinthecorner on Mar 2, 2009 9:59 PM CST reply actions

Isn’t Baltimore Clayton still under contract or restricted?

agreed tackle and center (if no birk) > wr need.

having watched that Percy Harvin highlights youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt68j3UjyZI I am intrigued, but his numbers are average seems plausible he could be there at 22.

Again props on the purple koolaid avatar.

He’s an RFA.

I presume they wouldn’t match but I don’t know for sure. He’s technically available.

Nate Washington of the Steelers…. did he get signed yet?

by skiumah06 on Mar 2, 2009 11:20 PM CST reply actions

Lance Moore?

Lance Moore: 5’9" 190lbs RFA New Orleans

2005: 0 games, 0 games started: -————————————————-
2006: 4 games, 0 games started: 1 rec, 10 yads, 10 avg, 0 TD’s
2007: 16 games, 4 games started: 32 rec, 302 yards, 9.4 avg, 2 TD’s
2008: 14 games, 11 games started: 79 rec, 928 yards, 12.0 avg, 10 TD’s

He obviously had a bigger year last year because Marques Colston went down to injury but he showed he could be a legit number two wide receiver.

by Festivus Miracle on Mar 3, 2009 11:54 AM CST reply actions

Would take Lance Moore...

But I’ll pass on Henderson. Vikes don’t need another BB type receiver. Why do people say Rice is another deep burner? He is not a downfield threat. He is a Housh type WR. Vikis will be fine if he comes back healthy.

Marko Mitchell in the draft

But maybe I’m just a homer, he’s from a run-oriented offense and is always among the national leaders in YPC.

Has had drop problems in the past, but Kaepernick has been known as a hard thrower.

The more I think about Percy Harvin the more intrigued I am, he looks like he’d be good kick returner too. Need center, corner, and RT more at this moment.

Our WR not helping our QB and vice versa.

I hate to be a downer for us who’d like to make a big splash with a QB, but I dont’ see it happening. I see us rolling with what we got…

A good QB can make due with an average lot of WR’s, and vice versa. What we have is a QB no defense respects and a bunch of WR’s that D’s that don’t rip it up like some can.

So in my mind, I’ll take either a WR improvement or a QB improvement. Whats left though? Housh would have helped in my mind at least… Coles? I’d rather have Bobby Wade – it may not be pretty, but he goes on inside slant routes.. I’d have loved to have Washington…Could care less about Galloway… I’d take Harrison, I know he’s not what he used to be, but he’d make a nice poss. receiver alongside Wade and Berrian. ( I like Rice, but until he proves he’s durable, hes a liablity, not an asset..)

But say we do get a WR – one like I mentioned. Is it going to make a defense respect our passing game any?? I seriously doubt it.

I know TJ isn’t a stud, and Sage is unproven. I know every QB learns differently and both options mentioned have have had chances, but I’m not willing to write them off completely. My reference is Eli Manning. Until he won the superbowl I thought he was terrible and looked like TJ has looked last year. I AM NOT suggesting it will happen with TJ or Sage like it happened to Manning, but what I am saying is that it takes a lot of time, more than many realize to get the NFL game to come to them. The big Q is: Will it ever?

As a lifelong Vikes fan I’ve never felt like we’ve had a better team but I also feel like until we get some STUD on either the WR position or the QB spot, we aren’t going past the first round….
