Cutler 09, Shanahan 2010?

Childress, I am a purple fan and thus you have my support at least one more year.  Most people think if Childress does not advance past the first round of the playoffs he will be fired.    Now I have faith we will advance, BUT IF we don't...

We will be looking for a new coach in 2010.  Mike Shanahan might be a good option.  Which at least to me seems yet another great reason why we should make a play at Cutler.  Sage should be part of that deal (we would be keeping our word to him giving him a chance to compete for a starting job). Sage and multiple picks spread over a couple years.

We definitely need something new to talk about if we’re talking about how to make a play at hiring a coach A YEAR BEFOREHAND…

This isn’t against you or anything, I’m just saying the complete lack of anything to talk about is dragging me down.

something to talk about......

save Winfield and Chester Taylor. Winfield needs to get locked up quickly. Losing him would set the Viking defense back a bunch. Also, Chester Taylor is a big part of the offense. He was clutch on 3rd downs. When I hear people putting him on their own personal trading blocks, it makes me sick. How do these people not see the need for 2 good RBs on an offense??

by newmexvike on Mar 22, 2009 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

In reference to Chester, a lot of people want to trade him because their’s a very good chance he’ll be gone when his contract is up after this season, so they feel would should get something for him now instead of getting nothing next year.

I agree that we should do everything we can to keep Winfield though.

Exactly...

He is better than the best complimentary back and obviously you attempt to resign him immediately, but…

taylor in the offense

Taylor would be an even better part of the offense if Childress ever put both him and Peterson on the field at the same time…

by SammyG on Mar 22, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

taylor

I agree they should get him out there with Peterson, maybe even like a wing back. But even if they don’t, as long as they pay him enough, I can’t see him leaving. I think the question is, will they pay him what anyone else would be willing to do? And I say, do it. He deserves it. He might be the best #2 in the game and his versatility is huge.

Go ahead take a shot against me, my point is valid and I stand by it.

20 years of mediocrity is bringing me down.

We are close and need a QB, and if that potentially helps us in the future … like I said it’s just ANOTHER reason to trade for Cutler. You trade for Cutler now because he helps us get the superbowl now not because it helps us attract a hall of fame coach, BUT … Cutler and Shanahan have man crushes on each. If bringing in Cutler helps attract Shanahan in the future should the need arise … that’s gravy and like I said just ANOTHER reason to go after Cutler not the only reason.

Cutler is not the answer

There is a lot of hype surrounding Cutler. I think this is due to the fact that is he the best QB (somewhat) available right now. Just because there are not any other legit QBs looking for a job, does not make Cutler more likely to be successful.

The Pros on Cutler: cannon of an arm and entering the prime of his career.

The Cons on Cutler: self-centered, me-first kind of thinker. Got into a pissing match with Rivers on the field, where both looked like idiots. Could not win one of the last 3 games this last year to secure a weak AFC west division title.

If the Broncos were having this problem with a real franchise QB, they would never trade him. Although one might argue, a real franchise QB would never put himself in this situation. He would wait out his contract and leave with a little class. He might privately ask to be traded, but he would not take it to the press.

I would rather the Vikes try and get McNabb (or wait til his contract is up) or Favre if they need another QB. But if they can’t get a proven winner (Cutler has not proven he can lead a team), give Rosenfelds a try. We’re already ready to replace the guy and he hasn’t even played for a team with the Viking’s quality of a supporting cast.

Cutler is not a sure thing, but he’s gonna want sure thing kind of money. And he’ll cost a lot to get him out of Denver (trade). How do you think he will respond to being benched if things don’t work out? Childress and the Viking brass has a history of doing just that.

by newmexvike on Mar 22, 2009 11:08 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah. I’m going to go-ahead and absolve him from some blame for his TEAM’S collapse. His defense was miserable and they were using their 1321789th string running back.

by mjschaefer on Mar 22, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

They have that many running backs? I thought you could only have 53 players on a roster. Some one should look into this.

Broncos RB's were just like Seatle's WR's

I remember watching a Seahawk game last year. They were down to like their 7th WR, Don’t remember his name. He entered the game and on the first snap, he got the ball thrown to him. He caught a 15 yard pass only to be taken out at the knees. He did a flip in the air. Landed on the turf, and you could just see the horrific pain in his eyes and face. He got into the game for one snap and was out for the year. Seattle was down to their 8th string. hahahaha… stupid seachickens.

“Could not win one of the last 3 games this last year to secure a weak AFC west division title.”

“Or Favre if they need another QB”

Did you not watch the Jets at the end of last year? Bringing in Favre might be the worst idea that I have ever heard.

by Skoaldybi on Mar 22, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

the AFC east was not weak and Favre finished the year with a torn biceps. If the Jets would have had a decent backup, Favre would not have been on the field. Before he hurt himself, he was having a good year. I would rather have McNabb, but Favre could lead the Vikes.

by newmexvike on Mar 22, 2009 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Cutler's share of the blame...

I will admit Denver’s Run D was awful. I think it was a big part of their demise. But a franchise QB should be a leader. Those were important games that slipped through their fingers. I find it interesting to hear that Cutler is free of blame, yet Jackson had everything to do with going 0-2 and losing to Philly. I’m not trying to say Jackson didn’t, but we’re being too easy on Cutler to say he wasn’t part of the problem.

All I meant to say is that I think a lot of people have him graded out as a grade A QB. When he’s really more of a B-/C+ kind guy. Don’t think Denver doesn’t know this, because if he was grade A, he’d go nowhere. And if he was grade A leader, they would have won one of those last three games against CAR, BUF or SD for the playoffs.

If the Vikings want Grade A QB, their best chance is to overpay for McNabb. The next best option is to give the Jets a decent QB so Favre can come out of retirement and the Jets will have to cut him. Have you noticed the Jets have not resolved their QB situation. I think they know Favre wants to be cut loose and come to Minnesota. But he would rather retire than play for the Jets again.

If neither of those things can pan out, the Vikes are better off sticking with what they have. I want to see what Rosenfelds can do. The Vikes don’t need a grade A QB to take them to the Superbowl. They just need a leader that can manage a game and play a decent play-action game.

B-/C+

Better than two D+’s

by LAviking on Mar 23, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

If Cutler is a B-/C+ QB, I’d hate to see what you rate Jackson and Rosenfels!

Have you looked at the stats from the last 3 games Denver played? I’m pretty sure Cutler did everything he could to help his team win. If he was on the Vikings and put up the same type of stats he did, they would have won.

Vs Carolina: 21/33 – 172 – 1 – 1 Not great stats, but typical Viking QB stats. But Denver’s D gave up 30 points, something the Vikings D wouldn’t have done.

Vs Buffalo: 25/45 – 359 – 0 – 1 Great passing yards. No TD’s through the air, but he did have 2 rushing scores that game. Yet Denver’s D gave up another 30 points.

Vs San Diego: Cutler 33/49 – 316 – 1 – 2 Good passing yards. 2 picks are bad, but Denver gave up 52 points that game! I don’t blame Cutler for those 2 picks. He was trying to put the whole team on his back and win the game by himself.

And how can you call yourself a Viking’s fan and want Favre to play in purple and gold next year? He led the NFL in INT’s again last year and the Jets didn’t go anywhere with him at the helm. No way I want him in Minnesota. I wouldn’t mind McNabb, but I don’t think he is going anywhere.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Mar 22, 2009 3:51 PM CDT reply actions

just for you....

PPE09,
Those stats stink, way too many INTs and not great yardage when you consider the offense get the ball back every time the defense scores. Considering he was playing for a playoff berth, 4 INTs to 2 TDs is a major choke. If you are going to defend Cutler, you need to find some games where he got more TDs than INTs.

I would rate Jackson a D+ during the first two games, a B- during his 2nd regular season performance, and an F in the playoffs. He did good after coming off the bench, but I don’t think the Vikes ever really put the game in his hands. The Philly game was a major set-back however and it just got worse as the game went on. It was hard to watch because I want to like him. I think in time he could be a good QB. But he should be a backup for a while.

Rosenfelds is hard to grade because he was a backup. Coming off the bench is not the same as a starter that the defense prepared for all week. I think he has the potential to be better than Jackson’s current play or Frerotte’s play (I give Frerotte a C/C-), but the jury is still out. If I had to guess, I’ll bet he’s a B level QB. What you read about him, is what you have to go on at this point.

As to Favre, I used to hate this guy. Ask anyone in my fantasy football league I would bash him like any good Viking fan would. I really used to love those Randle commercials where he sowed the Favre jersey for the chicken. That was a classic. However, his fallout with Green Bay and the torment he put Packer fans through was a pure joy. I live in New Mexico and at my work, I am the only Viking fan, there are four Packer and four Bear fans. I loved seeing the pain they were going through as Favre denounced the Packers and Ted Thompson. There is no denying the fact that he has played some great football over the years and is an established leader. I think things went bad for the Jets when Favre hurt is arm, but they did not have another QB that was worth starting. When the Jets were 8-3, Favre was having a pretty good year. I think if the Vikings got that 8-3 type of production from their QB, they would be over the top.

Favre sticking it to the Packers in Purple would be better than Moss mooning Lambeau. Imagine Culpepper winning a super bowl with the Pack, it would hurt a little more, no?? That’s nothing compared to Favre. Trust me, I hate the Packers, I think Favre does too at this point, so that makes us allies in my book.

by newmexvike on Mar 22, 2009 10:32 PM CDT up reply actions

All a matter of opinion.

Favre in purple would copmletely disgust me. Even after the messy divorce, he IS the Packers. Give me Randy and his mooning back over Favre any day.

read my entire post, dont just look at the stats

The game against buffalo, cutler ran for 2 td’s. So his td/int was 4 and 4 in the last 3 games. You also have to look at the facts that denver’s d game up 30, 30, and 52 points respectively. And they had no run game. Cutler was their entire offense. That’s a lot to ask for a kid in his 3rd year, and he still had them in position to win most of the time until the d let them down. That wouldn’t happen in minny.

And as far as favre goes, no thanks. He can stay in new york. You think he will be 8-3 with the vikings? Remind you of anyone? Frerotte maybe. Both old as hell, both threw picks left and right, both need to just retire.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Mar 23, 2009 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

entire post read

so 4-4 is good? no. you are first person I have read to defend his performance in those games. As a QB, you have to take responsibility for a slide like that.

by newmexvike on Mar 23, 2009 3:19 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think 4-4 is excellent.

All I’m saying is that most people tend to look at the final score, and not the whole picture. Let me ask you this. If the Vikings are down by 5 points, with 2 minutes left in the game, who would you want under center? T-Jack? Sage? Cutler? I don’t know about you, but this question is a no-brainer to me.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Mar 23, 2009 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Wow..

That’s quite a few turnovers. Sure, his yards are good in the pass-happy offense. I can tell you we will never pass the ball around 40 times a game though. And even 33 is a bit of a stretch. Who knows, that might cut down on his ints. I would hope so, because that many from a guy people are saying will supposedly take us to the SB is terrible.

I mean, you could easily argue that Jackson’s last 3 games were better than Cutler’s, and they were all against playoff teams. Looking back at Cutler’s stats, the yardage suddenly doesn’t impress me that much. Of course when you throw the ball 50 times you’re going to get around 300 yards.

Sorry this is off topic, but I want to celebrate!
Why they want Tahi is a mystery to me, but I am happy to see him go! The only question now is who will replace those 16 catches for 37 yards with the versatility be bad in run blocking as well. Those guys are tough to find.
