Torry Holt?
Does anyone have a theory on Torry Holt? I would have thought that acquiring him would be a no-brainer for the Beloved Purple. His price tag is well within our $30-some million available cap room. We wouldn't need to sign him long-term, thus leaving plenty of space for future signings. And, notwithstanding the belabored quarterback discussion, we (in my opinion) have huge needs at receiver. I don't think that anyone can confidently say that Rice is our answer. And few would argue that Berrian alone can frighten a defense. Holt would seem to add instant flair, practice wisdom, and depth. I've been awaiting the news of his signing and am surprised by the general silence, not only on our part, but across the league. Any ideas?

Blows my mind
We would go after TJ Houshmandzadeh and then not after Holt. Last years stats
Tj REC 92 YDS 904 AVG 9.8 TDS 4
Torry REC 64 YDS 796 AVG 12.4 TDS 3
To me if you throw tory the ball 28 more times he is far ahead of tj last year stat wise.
THen i looked at there carrer stats WoW keep in mind holt is just one year older then TJ.
Tj REC 507 YDS 5782 AVG 11.4 TDS 37
Torry REC 869 YDS 12660 AVG 14.6 TDS 74
thats a pretty big differense for just one year dont ya think. Im just guessin hes askin way to much money or else some team would have grabed him already.

It could be
that the Vikings like a WR in the draft that they would prefer to get and, theoretically, be more productive over the next 4+ years.

There is the fact that he said he is on vacation.
And will not be entertaining any offers for now.
Holt is someone we should go for if the price is right. He has some durability issues, but we are probably not going to use him as a #1 guy anyhow.
Whether or not we make a run for him is a whole different question.

Exactly!
I have not heard of him visiting ANY teams so it is way to early to call the vikes out for not pursuing him.

Yeah...
But I’m still more bothered by their lack of interest in Shaffer. I just don’t get it: he’s good, is still just 29, would bring a vet presence to a line with a likely first-year starter at center already… I’m baffled.
Seems like in FA, they either shoot for the stars or they go for the depth/special teamers types. Merely solid guys who could address a need—the Shaffers and Holts of the world—don’t seem to interest them much.

visiting Jax
The Jacksonville Jaguars have wasted many a draft pick and dollar of late in search of a quality wideout.
In 2004, a top-ten pick was devoted to receiver Reggie Williams. The following year, the Jags pulled a page from the Lions’ draft book and picked another one, Matt Jones. A fourth-rounder from 2004, Ernest Wilford, arguably was better than either of them. Last year, the Jaguars gave a big-money contract to free-agent Jerry Porter.
None of these players remain on the roster.
(Against this background, it probably makes sense that former Jacksonville V.P. of football operations James "Shack" Harris was hired by Detroit.)
But there’s hope in Jacksonville. They’re getting the first crack at veteran wideout Torry Holt, who was cut by the Rams earlier this month before earning a $1.25 million roster bonus.
According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Holt will visit the Jaguars on Thursday.
Other teams that have shown interest in Holt include the Titans.

I could see Jacksonville throwing a good amount of money at Holt. They literally have NOBODY to throw the ball to in Jacksonville. Garrard needs some help, big time.

Would have been a great complement.. but Rice is more than a side dish
As long as Torry wasn’t asking too much, I believe the Vikes made a mistake not signing him. In that same light, I am not giving up on Rice as an eventual respected 2nd WR. The guy barely played last year with at least a moderately sprained/partially torn PCL (or MCL, can’t recall). There’s plenty of GREAT, even elite receivers that disappear for long stretches when facing that similar injury during a season. Sidney still caught 4 TDs. High reception count is not his game, from what I see on the Vikes. Making big plays will be.. so I still believe. C’mon.. The guy’s seemingly BEST of pals with AP. Do you see who greets AP first on TD’s? AP does as well for Rice. What better player to buddy up with and help push you..?? This will be his 3rd year. I’ll quiet down QUICKLY if he makes little impact this year. :) (healthy, that is)
Oh yeah.. last two cents on Hoosh. I go out on a limb sometimes and could be WAY off mark. But Hoosh has some overrated risk to him for sure. Does anyone remember Alvin Harper’s production before being shipped to Tampa? 85 drew the stud corner all those years, and much of the secondary scheme to boot.
