Vikings will match on Tahi
From Access Vikings:
Fullback Naufahu Tahi won’t be leaving Minnesota for Cincinnati.
The Vikings plan to match the $1.4 million, one-year offer sheet the restrictred free agent received from the Bengals last Friday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The Vikings had until today to make the decision. Tahi had received the low tender of $1.01 million from the Vikings and obviously felt Tahi was worth the additional money.
Part of the Vikings decision might have been driven by the fact that free-agent fullback Leonard Weaver decided to sign with Philadelphia last week.
The Vikings would have received no compensation for Tahi if he had been allowed to leave for the Bengals. That’s because Tahi was not drafted out of Brigham Young and ended up signing with the Bengals as a free agent. He landed with the Vikings in November 2006 when they signed him off Cincinnati’s practice squad. Tahi took over as the Vikings’ lead fullback last season after Thomas Tapeh was released early in the regular season.

bleh
Sure it is only for another measly 400k, but I think that it is a waste of money. Should have let him return to Cincinnati if they wanted him so bad. It wouldn’t have hurt my feelings and probably wouldn’t have hurt Peterson’s feelings either.
Thanks for the story Manimal.
I disagree with you guys.
I think people often get frusturated with Tahi just because of the fact that he gets thrown to on those little dump passes for two yards every once in a while. I actually think he is a pretty decent blocking fullback. I was watching highlights of Peterson’s run on the Giants last night and Tahi really showed what he’s capable of on that play.
Think about it, you bring back a guy who is already familiar with the system and with blocking for Peterson. I personally think this is a smart move. In an offense that runs the ball as much as we do, we need someone who can lead block.
point taken
I didn’t bring up the madatory two-yard swing pass per game (16 rec 37 yds 2.3 yd avg 7 yd long)because that may not necessarily be his fault…although he does seem to get tackled a bit too easily for a 250 pound FB.
And you did make a valid point on the one play against the Giants where he actually bolcked well. I remember the TD run, but don’t necessarily remember the block. I’ll have to see if I can find it on my dvr.
But I do seem to remember an awful lot of blocks where he basically just fell down upon contact with the defensive player, and that is what I don’t necessarily care for.
But hey I’m a Viking fan and I’ll cheer like hell for him now that he’s resigned.
Well
we need a FB, and there are really no other options. He already knows the system, so to me it makes sense.
And don’t tell me Jeff Dugan was a viable option to be the full-time FB. He’s not.
V-I-K-I-N-G-S! Skol Vikings, Let's Go!!
Hooray! (Insert sarcastic weak party favor sound here.)
He definitely won’t be an offensive threat any time this millennium, but he’s a serviceable blocking FB. Man, we need the draft to start. I’m bored.

Amen to that.
I can’t wait for something to happen. I even tried getting into that fancy pantsy basketamuhball, but I just can’t quite get it. Oh well. Season starts in, what, six months?
Gah, that sounds like so long.

Skol Vikings!
Woot Woot!
Ouch!
Thanks for putting that one into perspective Manimal. 6 months sounds nothig short of cruel and unusual. Ugh!
Yeah, this is probably a smart match for the team. I would rather have seen Weaver in purple, but Tahi is better than some rook free agent. But, GOD I hope they decide not to throw those dump passes to him. Its a pick or fumble for 6 waiting to happen every time!! Not worth it for 2.3 yards =p
Tahi a MUST Sign
I just don’t get you guys. Tahi is a perfect match for a Brad Childress offense. Who else on our roster is guaranteed to take a 1 yard pass on 3rd and 3? The Tahi swing pass is a staple of Childress’ Kick Ass pass attack - guaranteed to keep you at the bottom of the league in 3rd down conversions.
