Where We Discuss the Vikings' Pick for the 2009 SBNation Mock Draft

Alright, folks. . .things are moving fast and furious behind the scenes of the 2009 SBNation Mock Draft, the best damn mock draft in the business today.

While our friends at Mocking the Draft are only up to the 9th pick in the draft, behind the scenes we're already up to Tampa Bay at #19.  So, with that, I'm going to open this poll for about 24 hours or so, at which point I'll have to submit the pick to the folks at Mocking the Draft for our selection.  There's one guy that's currently available that I really think will not be by the time our pick comes up. . .in reality, said player shouldn't make it past Tampa Bay at #19. . .but if he is, I might jump on him anyway.

So, as we've done in the past, I'm putting names that I think SHOULD be available when the 22nd pick comes up.  If a player has a majority when it comes time for me to submit the pick and it turns out that he's not available for whatever reason, I'll simply slide down to the next guy on the list.  I've given everyone ten choices to choose from. . .but if you think that's not enough, feel free to try to start a write-in campaign for the guy you'd like to see here.

Discuss here, folks. . .and, like I said, the pick needs to be in about 24 48 hours from now!

EDIT:  Due to some miscommunication, our pick is now due on Monday morning, not Sunday morning.  That just means there's more time to vote!

EDIT #2:  There has been what Bill Pidto used to call a developing. . .situation with this pick.  Please see the FanShot on the right-hand side of the page.

I poicked Harvin...

He doesn’t have to come in and be a game changing WR right off the bat, because of Purple Jesus and a decent WR corps. But Harvin, if used properly, could present a lot of favorable match ups, and I think he would be exceptional as a kick and punt return man.

If the Vikes make a move along the o-line, I can’t really argue that, either. Cook is okay, but could be better. Vontae Davis might be a good pick as well. Antoine Winfield is the man, but he’s only got a couple of years left, so it’s time to start looking for the next generation there as well.

But overall, I think Harvin provides the most immediate impact, and is the best choice.

I agree on Harvin

provided that he’s there when the Vikings pick. Otherwise, I could see going with Alphonso Smith at cb. That said, ORT is still a huge problem as Cook simply cannot man the position adequately. Also, rookie WRs seldom contribute that much the first year or so as they adjust to the pro game. What the offense really needs is for Sidney Rice to step up his game bigtime after regressing horribly (partially due to injury) last year after a promising rookie season.

Take Percy

I think Harvin brings the most to the table. We could use him in a multitude of ways, and he can score on any touch. Nicks would be my second choice, we need help at receiver. Both gone? I’d go with Vontae Davis.

PLUS the name, PERCY, fits in well. It might be Tavaris, or Sage, but think of the other ball handlers names. Adrian, Chester, Jimmy K or Bobby W, Visanthe, Bernard or Sidney. Yeah baby, we need a Percy.

For the record

The name that’s currently on the board that I don’t think is going to get past Tampa is Mark Sanchez, QB, USC.

I really don’t think he’s going to be there. . .but if he IS there at 22, should I abandon what the poll says and take him? Or stick with the winner of the poll?

Take Sanchez

If he’s available at 22, the Vikings will have their pick in about 2.025 seconds.

Sanchez

will still have to sit for a year or two. No way he has the experience to step right in and play. While I like the kid and saw him play a lot here SoCal, the fact that he has only started for a year is a big deal. The Vikings should take some one who will make an immediate impact with the first round pick. Next years QB class offers a few guys that should be able to start from day one and assuming the Vikings get some impact players to go around the QB this year, they can put themselves in a position to move around the first round of next years draft to get one. I think if Harvin is available, he should be the pick.

If Sanchez slides that far, how cool would it be if Detroit took him at 20, then flipped him to Denver along with a future pick for Cutler? Denver gets to do the proper thing of using their pick to try and find an impact defensive player, and they get a more McDaniels-friendly QB plus some future value. Detroit goes from 0-16 to having a good QB teaming up with their franchise WR and their decent RB, two consecutive first round picks shoring up the line (presumably), and an improving defense (keep in mind they acquired Peterson from Seattle, so their LBs are decent; I like some of their young linemen, like Avril…if they used their 2nd rounder on a defensive anchor, someone like Ron Brace… they could be interesting).

Back to the Vikings, I’d be curious to see what they’d do if Sanchez is there. I suspect they’d say they’ve already invested a pick in a QB (Sage) and look elsewhere. But who knows. Eventually they have to take the position seriously. Right?

by jianfu on Mar 28, 2009 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like the Harvin pick. Nicks is going to be good,* but he isn’t a game changer. The Vikings play straight up football (so tackle would make sense too). Harvin would allow them to be more creative, but he can also be successful in a more traditional role contributing in the return game, in the passing game and on third down at multiple position on the field (screens, wr bubble screens, flat routes, etc.). He would pose a threat everytime he were on the field. Fast enough to run the seam to keep safeties honest and too fast for any linebacker to cover in space. He would make life a lot easier for either Tavaris or Sage and of course AP.

yeah maybe alex mack can transform into a silver liquid and use the other special powers alex mack gained from that toxic spill that alex mack was present at.. (really, i don’t have a problem with the pick, i just remember “the secret world of alex mack” back in the day on nickelodeon)

What up?

What we really need are some good,

sabrmetric measurements to properly evaluate college players. especially for QB’s so that we can better predict future success then just willie nilly picking crappy QB’s in the first round. I am not sure on sanchez. I would feel a lot more comfortable taking him in the 3 round, wich is where I think he would go if he stayed in school for his senior year, instead of coming out early.

I'm on the Nicks bandwagon

Just watch, if we don’t take him, we are going to regret it. He will be ROY

Being a Penn State Fan

I’d like to see us take A.Q. Shipley. But I’m not opposed to Mack. I really hope we don’t take Laurinaitis, I think he’s overrated.

I'd say Harvin but...

There is a lot of talk about how creatively he could be used in our offense. All I can think is that won’t happen while Chilly is around. Our offense has zero imagination in it and I can’t see how the addition of Harvin would change that. I doubt Vonte will get passed the Saints, but if he makes it to 22 I think that’s who the Vikings should take. He can be a nickle/dime corner and Antoine’s eventual replacement. Check out this video at the 1:10 mark. He makes Joe McKnight look slow. I’ve watched an inordinate amount of Illinois football for the past two years and Vonte is a beast. He’s a linebacker with corner speed.

Completely agree. I love Harvin and his ability but he doesn’t really fit into Childress’ current scheme. Would ol’ Brad be willing to actually alter his KAO to utilize Harvin? I have my doubts.

Phil Loadholt I see us trading down to 26-29th

Drafting Phil Loadholt, 6’8" 343 lbs! This beast dominates at times and will start day 1 at RT! He played LT but projects right. He is massive and is a punishing run blocker & handled the premier RDE’s well during passing downs. I believe he will be a perennial Pro Bowl RT for years to come. Now if we can only get teammate Duke Robinson, G, 6’5" 330 in rd 2.

SKOL! Dawgs

by WarriorViking on Mar 28, 2009 4:25 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Pettigrew

He fits in perfect with our offense. He is a punishing run blocker and has great hands and size to move the chains. He would help the passing and running game instantly and that would allow Jimmy K to move back to his H-Back (TE/FB) role and we can then cut newly resigned Tahi (his contract isn’t guaranteed or would go against the cap if we cut him). I like Nicks more than Harvin but either one would be great and Davis won’t be around so I’m not going to fool myself. Loadholt is a good pick if we trade down and get more picks. OG is not a need for us this year or anytime soon.

I voted for OTHER

I voted for “Other” because I think the way to go would be to take the best available OFFENSIVE TACKLE on the the board. Britton is good, but if there is a better one available, go for it!!!!! The right tackle spot needs to be strengthened.

by iowa_cyclone on Mar 28, 2009 4:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I said Britton

but honestly, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of those choices, although I’m not crazy about Vontae Davis or Alex Mack in the first.

by Bodysuit Man on Mar 28, 2009 5:26 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

If we are going for our #1 need yes but

He would be a reach at #22. Our RT spot needs to be addressed though.

by nmvikesfan on Mar 28, 2009 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I try to move the pick for a #1 in next year’s draft. Four words: Sam Bradford Colt McCoy. I want to hoard as much bait as I can for a shot at one of those two, and having extra picks to bundle would potentially help.

Last year the Eagles traded the #19 pick to Carolina for Carolina’s 2nd rounder, 4th rounder, plus their #1 in this year’s draft. (They really wanted Jeff Otah.) A deal that good might be wishful thinking, but who knows? Otherwise, just try to get an extra first next year. Dallas has no first this year and a bunch of middling picks. At the very least, maybe you can get their 2010 first rounder plus a 2009 3rd or 4th for the trouble.

But since that’s probably not an option for Gonzo, I chose “other.” I like Ole Miss DT Peria Jerry. He could caddy for fat Pat on passing downs (moving Robison to DE, giving the Vikings a fierce pass rush up and down the line), step in on a full time basis during the potential suspension, and be a longer term solution as Pat Williams is no spring chicken.

But realistically, I think they consider trading down.

by jianfu on Mar 28, 2009 9:30 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

They used him a lot at DT on passing situations last year.

very true

I was just making a nit-picky comment. lol

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Mar 30, 2009 1:50 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

No WR's

I didn’t look at the other comments. Didn’t want them to cloud my rant. I have a rule. No WR’s in the first round. We got lucky with Moss.

I repeat… NO WR’s in the 1st round. But it looks like the voters are not in agreement.

FYI, I voted Vontae Davis. I will now read the other comments. : )

by Odin on Mar 28, 2009 10:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Of all the players listed, Vontae Davis is probably the best single talent. If they truly draft BPA and he’s there, then they’d pick him.

However, the offensive line is in trouble. They were mediocre-at-best even with Birk, and now he’s gone. They ranked 28th in sack rate; they ranked 15th in Football Outsiders’ adjusted line yards. And again, they just lost the face of their line. They essentially need to add at least one instant contributor to the line.

So in all seriousness, I think Gonzo should either go for Mack or Britton, and I think the Vikings will do something along those lines. I wouldn’t be surprised if they took 2 linemen in the first 3 rounds. We all talk about the deep OT class, but there’s actually a few promising centers, too.

by jianfu on Mar 29, 2009 12:48 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Vontae!!!

If Vontae Davis is available we will take him. Sorry Percy fans. But we didnt need a runningback in 2007 and look what taking the best player available did for us. Vontae Davis is a pure athlete and giving him a couple years to play behind Winfield and Griffin will be great. He would be a stud on special teams and has return ability. I realise that a good combine workout means nothing (see brother Vernon), but Davis is one of the best Athletes in the draft and would be a steal at #22.
I do think that was the person that Gonzo was talking about saying he thought he would be gone,. If he is gone I would take a guy like Eben Britton or Harvin.

A suggestion for the future...

Gonzo, something I’ve never seen a mock do, but that would be pretty effin’ cool, would be to allow people to trade up and down. One of the things that’s gotten a lot of press is what to do with our #22, since it seems like kind of a no-man’s-land at our position needs. SB Nation could make history by developing an approach that would allow us to competitively slide and advance. A suggestion for the future?

by Anthony Carter on Mar 29, 2009 11:11 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually

We tried that for the first draft that DN was a part of SBNation for, back in 2007.

I can understand where it would be good to be able to do that sort of thing. . .however, it presents a couple of problems.

1) Fans tend to overvalue players from their own teams. Because of that, you can get a lot of somewhat unrealistic trade offers, which can lead to animosity and so forth.

2) Logistically, it’s a tremendous pain in the ass. We’ve generally had one or two people working as overseers for the mock draft process, and they’ve got enough to do without having to sort through trades and all that other good stuff.

So, while a mock draft that would allow trades would be fun, I suppose, doing it this way allows us to do it in a more timely manner, which is what we’re shooting for here.

Make sense? (-:

Yeah...

It makes perfect sense. I figure bloggers hate and love their own with less than tempered sobriety. It would not provide an exact snapshot of reality, since roster players often figure into trade packages, but I was thinking more in terms of trading draft picks specifically, which wouldn’t entail, for example, getting rid of a guy like CT — who the front office is clearly committed to — even though a number of people here have called for his disposal. But, I sympathize with the logistical nightmare. It would be nice to hear your reflections after you select, whether their might have been a deal you would have considered, either to trade up or down.

Hey, everybody?

You know that thing that I talked about potentially happening that I didn’t think had any chance of happening? Remember, with that one guy that I didn’t think could possibly fall to #22 overall actually landing in Minnesota’s laps?

Yeah. . .we need to seriously discuss what action to take if that happens. Because, behind the scenes, we’re one pick away from that happening. And since I don’t see Philly taking a QB at #21. . .well, you know. . .

There will be a FanPost up shortly.

by Gonzo on Mar 29, 2009 4:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Dunno. Is this supposed to be your (or DailyNorseman’s collective) take, or are you trying to guess what the real Vikings might do?

I don’t think it’s so far fetched to imagine Sanchez falling this far in real life. He’s seems to be in that Brian Brohm/Aaron Rodgers/Brady Quinn class of QBs that teams are uncomfortable springing an early pick on. I’m not sure about him, personally, but I’m not on the payroll.

BTW, WalterFootball’s latest mock has the Vikings landing Eben Britton in the first and CB DJ Moore in the 2nd. That would be sweet. Of course, in this mock Alphonso Smith goes the very next pick in the 2nd after the Vikings’ Moore pick. I think they’d switch that, which would make the draft even better. Smith has his limitations, but his skills are almost tailormade for the Tampa-2. I think he has shot at being an elite Tampa-2 corner in the mold of Ronde Barber or Antoine Winfield. It’s also why I don’t think it’s that unrealistic to think he may slide. Maybe not that far, but far enough where the Vikings could manuever to get him. There just aren’t that many Tampa-2 teams these days, so maybe they’ll have a shot at getting two of the names on your list. I’d love it.

2nd round

If we take a RT in the first round – PLEASE TAKE A RT – Connor Barwin would be a great pick in the 2nd. Hes not what we need,aTE/DE/LB/special teams ace – but he’s a great football player who always makes plays.

Gonzo...

If Sanchez is available at 22, I don’t see how the Vikings could pass on him. My vote would be for Sanchez if he is available. He might not be able to start this year, but with a year or two under his belt, he could be a good QB
