Broncos to try and trade Cutler

Well, it happened. Let the speculation commence even further.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos said Tuesday they will grant Jay Cutler his request and try to trade the disgruntled Pro Bowl quarterback.<!-- begin whole table -->

There is no shortage of teams interested in the 25-year-old rocket-armed Pro Bowl quarterback.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen released a statement saying both he and coach Josh McDaniels had been unable to get Cutler to call them back over the last 10 days. Bowlen said he spoke with Cutler's agent, Bus Cook, on Tuesday and came away convinced "that Jay no longer has any desire to play for the Denver Broncos."

Therefore, Bowlen said, "We will begin discussions with other teams in an effort to accommodate his request to be traded."

O god... here we go again!

I can’t wait for this whole saga to be done with. I would love to see him in a Viking’s uniform next year, but I don’t think the Vikings have enough ammo to get him. Not to mention some people in the Viking’s organization are not completely sold on him. Would love for it to happen, but I don’t think it will.

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Mar 31, 2009 8:48 PM CDT reply actions

Makes me wonder even more who in the Vikings organization isn’t sold on Cutler and why…..though I think we simply won’t give up as much as another team to get Cutler.

Vikings out of the running..

according to http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=cr-cutlertrade033109&prov=yhoo&type=lgns .
At the very bottom of that article, they say it would be a far shot for the Vikings to rekindle trade talks, since, upon further investigation, it seems that more than just the coaching staff didn’t like something about him. And now with so many other teams involved, the price just went higher.

So, no more Cutler. Time to move on to other thoughts….Pat White replacing Booty?

by Lofoten on Apr 1, 2009 5:32 AM CDT up reply actions

It's not about ammo....

I don’t think it’s about $$$. I think the Vike’s management made a call on the value over the current QBs they already have and decided it wasn’t worth it.

And if that’s the case, then I applaud them for making that call. Cutler is rated high because he can chuck it deep, but he may lack in other areas.

by newmexvike on Apr 1, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

My guess is he goes to Detroit. They have that extra first-rounder this year, for starters.

Weird, though, that the owner announces this. Maybe some gamesmanship going on…

Could be an early April Fools Joke

But I don’t Think so…For the LOVE OF GOD…we can give up that first round pick…the draft is deep with O-Lineman..1st and a 3rd or a 1st and either Rosenfels or TJack would get it done!.

Make it happen

Window is now. When was the last time a young franchise QB got put on the trading block? (Cassel is a different beast than Cutler) I’d be willing to give up our 1st, Chester, Sage/TJax, 4th.

by Doozer on Mar 31, 2009 9:15 PM CDT reply actions

Chester Taylor?

I wouldn’t even do a straight-up Taylor/Cutler trade.

by newmexvike on Apr 1, 2009 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

As much as I’d hate to see him go, we can dangle Chester Taylor as good trade fodder with some picks. The Shanahan system made good running backs left and right. Now with a new system…not so much. Denver needs a strong back to step right into the new system and flourish. Chester and a 2nd and 4th rounder is my vote.

Here i go again…praying …hoping. It would be to perfect…But i am ready to have my dreams smashed. Childress would get my upmost repect if this could or would happen…The trigger wont get pulled boys, I hope so but dont get all dreamy eyed, like i have so many times before

by frehleyscomet on Mar 31, 2009 9:44 PM CDT reply actions

I could live with either

Chester and the 2, of if really pushed Chester and the 1st.

Sanchez has been falling on a lot of boards, I would not be suprised to see Denver take him with thier pick.

as for us, we do need help on the line, and this draft class is deep. if we keep the first we could still move down into the second to get an upgrade on cook, and if we give up the first, then there is still the second to make the upgrade. I don’t think cutler will command the entire draft board as some seem to think, after all it only cost Kansas 1/2 a second to get Cassel, and while Cutler is way better then Cassel, Denver is now being forced to trade. Green bay only got a 3rd rounder for Farve after all, and he is HOF bound.

I’d rather trade our pick for Cutler than use it on Harvin. That said I’d rather not trade the pick because it hurts the foundation of the team. Then again our QB situation hurts my eyes. I’m torn.

If there was a betting pool, I’d place my money on Tampa Bay.

what do they have to lose

I don’t see why chilly and co. don’t just pull the trigger already. your going to tell me that this coaching staff isn’t sold on cutler, but they are all totally sold on TJ and sage! get real. Chilly if you pull this off you may actually save your job. If you don’t, and we can’t make it past the 1st round this year you are gone. How can you get away with not addressing the most important position on the field for this long, and considering how much talent is on the rest of the team it shouldn’t be acceptable.
come on Vikes, make me proud. go get a pro bowl QB, instead of the collection of wannabes we have now!

This is how I'm going to treat Cutler rumors from now on:

Glance at story, laugh, and walk away. That’s it. Glance, laugh, walk away. Because I am tired of Cutler. Whatever happens, happens. At this point, I consider any more roster moves simply as nice little surprises, because I’m really not expecting that much more. I am content, and I shall stay that way no matter what comes up.

In AP I trust

Franchise qb. Franchise qb. Franchise qb. Let’s hitch our horse and let’s go.

Get this done. Sage, a first, and fourth.

not happening...

the broncos will demand a good quarterback to be included in any trade….we have enough ammo for a decent offer but denver would not consider any of our qb’s as an adequate replacement….the only other way is a 3 way trade but i can’t see it……i am willing to give rosey a chance…….just a gut feeling but i think he has the tools and he knows this is his one big crack at the big time……p.s….the off season sucks!

Finally...

a voice of reason.

To anyone who thinks that Sage or T-Jack has a trade value higher than a 4th round pick has grossly over-estimated their worth. And to label them as a replacment for Cutler in Denver? Are you kidding? What would you say if you were a Denver fan?

If the Vikes somehow make the trade for Cutler, these two men will have little to do with it. It will be more along the lines of Chester Taylor, EJ Henderson and a package of high draft picks.

In my opinion, the Vikings should stay clear.

by timeloop13 on Apr 1, 2009 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions

While I agree...

Now that they’ve admitted Cutler is on the trading block, it’s going to be a little harder to demand anything. They’ve annouced to the world that Jay Cutler will not be a Bronco next year. They can just take the best deal given at this point, and if it doesn’t involve a good QB, there’s not a whole lot they can do. Now, I think whatever team trades for him will give up some sort of QB, it’s hard to imagine they will be anywhere near Cutler statistics.

Another option would be to orchestrate a trade with someone with a high enough draft pick to get Mark Sanchez if the Broncos like him. The Jets come to mind. Perhaps the Broncos could get the Jets number one, maybe a three, and trade the picks they receive to move up a spot or two to ensure they snag him.

As timeloop13 said, a high profile defensive player could also work, as Denver needs all the help they can get on that side of the ball. That’s a definite possibility, but I still think Childress is content with Tarvaris and Sage.

Whatever happens, Cutler would look awfully good in purple, and Denver admitting they are trading him makes my imagination wander in this long, slow offseason. Do I think that Minnesota will end up with him? No, not really. But it sure would make things interesting, wouldn’t it?

So, while a defensive player could work, I still don’t think anything will come of it. I can’t wait until he ends up somewhere so this story can finally be put down.

Franchise QB? How so??

I don’t consider a guy who has a paper thin ego, put’s up nice stats but can’t get his team to win a franchise QB. At least not one who I would be willing to sell the farm to aquire.

Some of you guys need to quit playing your XBox long enough to realize that it don’t work like that in real life.

VikeGuru is a doofus!!

by Unclebillybonz on Apr 1, 2009 8:03 AM CDT reply actions

Um...

They had one of the worst defenses the league has seen in a long time. It’s not all Cutler’s fault. Maybe you need to get off your Playstation and realize it’s not all on the QB. You can’t outscore everyone. Even the Patriots had an average defense when they went 16-0.

Now, I’m not for selling the farm, but it would be silly to at least not look into it now that he’s officially on the trading block. He would be an obvious upgrade.

A little overstated, considering both Kansas City and Detroit had worse seasons defensively, based on a yards per game basis.

I think if/when he gets traded we will see how good of a QB he is. Remember, he threw the ball over 600 times this season. You are bound to throw for high yardage with that many throws. Statistically speaking he was 16th in the league with a QB rating of 86.0 rating, which was worse than Seneca Wallace, Matt Schaub and Shaun Hill.

Cutler definately has talent and he would obviously be an upgrade, I am just not sure I a want to give up major pieces of our team for him.

by timeloop13 on Apr 1, 2009 8:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Definitely agree and understand...

And I was using a bit of hyperbole there; when I saw them play it sure seemed like their defense was just standing around. Allow me to rephrase: Based on my personal experience with the NFL, it looked to me that Denver had one of the worst defenses I have seen in this league in a long time.

To play a bit of Devil’s Advocate, you could say he was throwing so much because the defense did not allow them to run the ball very much, and they had, I think, 37 running backs* on the IR last year, so that attributed to the massive passing attack as well.

You could look at it as a plus; he threw that much, everyone knew he was going to throw that much, and he still put up decent numbers. It would be interesting to see how he does in an offense where he is only required to throw 15 times a game or around that number.

Again, I don’t want to trade a lot; I don’t even think the Vikings will make an effort, but he would be an upgrade. His circumstances (bad defense and 37 running backs* on IR) surely caused their offense to become somewhat one dimentional. Just something to think about.

Really?

For all you who think this trade is dead because the Vikings can’t offer Denver a quarterback in return… all I can say is, “Really?”

I thought it had been established that almost any Cutler trade would have to go through either Cleveland or New York or even Tampa Bay. I thought we had covered that…

Little Known Stat About Cutler's Record

Since I live in Denver I hear this seemingly every other day, but if I remember correctly Cutler is 13-1 as a starter when the defense allowed 21 or fewer points. Take that stat for what it’s worth. I personally like Cutler, but I don’t see him coming to the Vikings.

If the Vikings could get it done, I would deal Chester Taylor along with the #1 pick, possibly the second rounder for 2010 with an escalation clause to the 1st depending on performance. Again, I think it’s a long shot, but it’s worth a shot none the less. I love Chester Taylor as much as most Vikings fans, but with his contract running up after this season, we lose him anyway. Also, I think a Chester Taylor/J.J. Arrington backfield is far more appealing than Arrington/Buckhalter.

I doubt we'll even talk to Denver

We had our chance, we turned it down. Why would we suddenly change our minds?

Honestly, I just want him traded already. He can either go to the Jets or the Redskins. And apparently the Redskins are in the lead. I’d hate to see him end up with the Bears or Lions though. Unless, of course, he sucks outside the city of Denver, where they don’t have him throw the ball 40 – 50 times a game.

Who knows. Nobody can really be sure how he’ll do outside of Denver. Like somebody brought up earlier, when you throw the ball a ton, you get a ton of yardage. Which is why I’d rather focus on completion , which would be harder to maintain with a huge ammount of passes. And Cutler’s is. . . 62.3. Which is pretty damn good for 616 passes.

Yeah, Seneca Wallace and whomever are backups may have the higher rating, but they didn’t throw the ball anywhere near as much as Cutler, meaning their stats are going to be inflated a little bit.

To wrap it up, I’d love to get him, I doubt there’s anyone who really wouldn’t, but I doubt the Vikes would enter talks again, and at this point the price would likely be steep. I find it highly unlikely that whomever wasn’t sold on him before, after reading how childish he’s been acting, feels differently now.

Cutler Sweepstakes

At this point, even teams that weren’t looking for a new QB (e.g. the Redskins) are suddenly showing interest in Cutler. It’s a full-blown auction now, and he’ll go to the highest bidder. And while I think the Vikes could have done a viable deal, apparently they aren’t interested (if Chilly was the cause of blowing a 3-way deal that would have brought Cutler to to Minny, it just adds to the list of offenses on on his shiny dome).

If we’re going into the season with T-Jack and Sage… well, I want to see what T-Jack can do after another off-season. It really is possible that T-Jack will finally be ready, he was fairly close last year and he has shown steady progression.

by DCPurple on Apr 2, 2009 7:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’m kind of looking forward to seeing how Jackson does this next season too. I’m tired of being teased with glimpses and small stretches of games. Hopefully this is the season he stays in all 16 games and takes us to the playoffs, finally showing everybody he’s warranted all the time spent on him.

by Frost on Apr 2, 2009 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Call me crazy...

but I’m more excited to see what our 4th round pick this year can do when given the chance to have a full camp with the likely-hood of him becoming the full time starter. He’s never had that chance in his 8 years in the league.

The good news for me is that there is no way we will trade for Cutler for a number of reasons. The biggest one being…..if we wanted the guy it would have happened before anyone heard about him being on the trading block anyway. Clearly this team doesn’t want him.

It will be interesting to see what happens with his new team though. Much more interesting than watching Favre tote his old ass around NY. Its not often you think of a young pro bowl QB as a boom or bust prospect, but I really think he will be wherever he goes. I’d say 70/30 for success/failure rate with new team.
