A free agent CB is coming to visit! Get excited!
OK, maybe not that excited. Somebody named "Karl Paymah" is visiting the Vikings over the weekend. Here's the report from the Pioner Press:
Free-agent cornerback Karl Paymah is expected to visit with the Vikings this weekend.
A third-round pick out of Washington State, Paymah started just five games for the Denver Broncos in four NFL seasons. Paymah struggled when given a chance to replace injured perennial Pro Bowl cornerback Champ Bailey last season, and he was replaced by rookie Josh Bell.
But Paymah is considered a standout special teams player, and he could provide much-needed depth for the Vikings at cornerback.
Paymah is reportedly visiting with the Baltimore Ravens today.
So we got that goin' for us, which is nice. Personally, this is the very first time I've heard Paymah's name, ever. And I'm pretty sure that's the case for most people outside the Greater Denver Area.
Unless the Ravens poach another guy away from us, maybe we can get a solid special teamer to replace Heath Farwell (if/when he leaves) along with a little depth at corner.
We're not exactly lighting the world on fire here, but hey, it's something...and I even incorporated a cheap way to link to one of the best scenes from Caddyshack. Enjoy the rest of your Thursday everyone!

Well, if it was for defense, oh hell no especially being cut by a team with one of the worst D’s right now, but since he seem’s to “stand out on special teams”, I’d try anything to improve on the crap effort of last season.

Special teams guy = Good. CB, still needs to be filled.
I like Chris Carr from Tennessee. We’ve showed interest in him and I like how tenacious he is.

I think this means
that the Farwell situation is unsalvagable. He must be ready to sign with the Browns, and we’re drafting his hopefully-as-productive replacement.

Let me check
My God son played with him at Wash. St. I’ll see what he has to say about him. Ok, maybe this is a bargain basement deal that might work. If he is good on special teams and has some secondary experience he could also serve as injury insurance. Then again, some of these guys are late bloomers and we get really lucky. Not exactly a flashy profile bu tmaybe this shows signs of activity in the front office.

S Roy Williams
He just got released. He is only 28 years old, he can take Darren Sharpers spot and keep tyrell johnson on special teams.
We got the cap room! Sign him then a WR, OL, CB in the Draft

Why would we want to keep Johnson on special teams?
Sure, let’s take a hard hitting safety with cornerback speed an just leave him on special teams.

Not a big fan of Roy William, but I suppose if we do nothing else in free agency it wouldn’t hurt…

Roy Williams is the most overrated player in the NFL
He’s terrible

Not better than an unproven rookie?
Oh I get it, he isnt worth the dough according to you.
Why do you think that?

He can't cover anyone, he is only good at stopping the run and thats not a problem for the vikes
Jared Allen is to football what Jason Voorhees is to Lake Crystal.

What?
Roy Williams is trash. Why do you think that Dallas had to pull him out of the lineup on 3rd downs? Give me a break. Just because we are slow in making some moves doesnt mean we have to collect trash just to say we did something.

Is that a response to me or are you just replying to my post to keep the comments nice and neat? Cuz if it’s the latter I appreciate that. And if it’s the former I don’t want Roy either.

Cowboys...
Are evidently making cap room while getting rid of cancers like TO. I don’t think Roy falls into that catagory. However the Boys are looking to make some new chemistry that is obviously lacking. Watch see if they start hitting the FA market for bargains to build a team that is cohesive. Romo better watch it or he will be on the trade block. Something is happening in the Big D. They may be sucking up a year to rebuild and FA might be more alluring than this years crop

If there is anything to get excited about, it’s that they’re doing SOMETHING. Why they aren’t working on the RT and C positions I’m not sure.

Paymah has a lot of upside.
Basically, we are getting a special teams ace with the potential to shore up our shallow cornerback roster.

Seems like a pretty insignificant signing though
I don’t begrudge the FO for trying to get better ST players, but is that where you want to start free agent signings? Part of the reason we’ve been left with our pants down at center is because we’ve done so little in the last couple of offseasons to get depth behind Birk. Now it looks like we might be doing the same thing for Winfield.
If it’s just a ST move, I guess it’s alright, but if we think we’re getting a future starter at CB in a bargain-basement castoff, that’s pretty discouraging. Not unusual, as that’s the way we’re going at the QB position too, but discouraging because that may be the way all our moves are going to be too.

Better than Bennie Sapp
I agree with you that ST only is almost always a bad criteria for a FA; however, I do think Paymah would have to be a better replacement CB or dimeback than Bennie Sapp, who is barely that at his best. (I was impressed and amazed that he had an INT last year, although that had been deflected by the receiver, as I recall.)
Hopefully, Tyrell Johnson will be either starting at one of the safety positions and/or playing nickelback for the Vikings…or move Griffin to one of the safety spots and start Tyrell at CB.

I hope we don’t start messing with that type of stuff (switching Grif’s position) now that it seems he’s finally starting to come into his own. Let’s just be like Childress and not get creative, keeping Tyrell at safety and Grif at corner.

I would say it is a special teams move with the hope that it may someday translate into a future starter.
We are probably going to lose a few special teams guys, and we could use a faster ST specialist on special teams, that’s for sure.

Lol... That was quite redundant.
I meant to say “a faster ST specialist on punt returns”…

Fowler
is a free agent. I don’t know what his condition is. I know he is old bu tcould he help short term if the price is right. Mike Goff is another interesting angle with an old age label. He is one big boy who could hold the inside of the line. A good OT in the draft and using Goff at guard thenHicks at both positions if needed might be the answer. I know we bash Cook, but he did play center and it is pretty hard to jump off side or make a false start from there. Sullivan may be the real answer but what if Cook actually can play center?
I’m beginning to wonder if a big a— guard on the rt side might balance things out. Sullivan and Cook battle for center. We pick up the young Rt.OT if he does well and starts, we have a back up center and tackle in Cook. If the rook doesn’t start right off, Hicks goes in.
This is playing chess, I know. Maybe a big guard might be a temporary fix and a vet like Goff might work. These are just scenarios I ponder as I know we all feel the OT spot must be dealt with. There are a butt load of O-line men out there. If they saw something in Paymah, maybe they might find a diamond in the rough with some of the younger O-line guys in FA.
Thanks for baring with my speculations. They are just passing thoughts

Report on Paymah
Spoke with my god sons dad. He said Paymah played on a very strong Wash St. defensive secondary. Not sure why he hasn’t cracked a starting spot yet but it could be who he was behind and how the team was doing. In Paymah’s defense he played behind Bailey, and may not have been doing well so they put the rookie in to give him experience. A matter of flipping players to see what worked.
Sounds like he muffed an opportunity but that doesn’t mean he is bad in the secondary. He is a good ST player, hard worker and loves to hit.
My friend thinks its a great move for the Vikes. Especially at a reasonable price

Umm....
From Access Vikings:
Spielman said the team has not had any free agent visits other than T.J. Houshmandzadeh and don’t currently have any visits scheduled.
What’s going on here?

And of course, five seconds after I post it:
Chip also has confirmed that Denver free-agent cornerback Karl Paymah is scheduled to visit Winter Park next week. Paymah is scheduled to make two stops before coming to Minnesota, meaning there is a chance he could sign elsewhere first.
Makes me feel dumb.
Also, Farwell re-signed.

Farwell signed?
Thats huge. I really like that kid. He is playmaker, plain and simple. Best move of the offseason!

Well, seeing as how the only other moves we’ve made are resigning Jimmy K and not resigning Birk, that’s not saying much.
