And, Gonzo picks...

There you have it folks, Percy Harvin!  Sanchez, indeed, fell to us and Gonzo employs the "win now" attitude of Vikings fans to justify why he wasn't chosen.  I'm inclined to agree with him here, though not because I driven by a "win now" attitude.  I think the upgrade Harvin gives us at WR is more substantial than the upgrade Sanchez would give us at quarterback (and he would doubtless take some time to develop).  I'd be interested to hear from Gonzo whether trade options would be available to the Vikings with these players available to them, where he thinks a trade might come from, and what that would position us to do differently.

Nope. Bad choice.

Sorry, but Sanchez looks pretty fricken good. Way to much upside to pass at the QB position with a #22. It would be one thing if we already had a proven even-slightly-above-average QB…But as is… Sanchez should be the pick here.

I would have to second this.

Sanchez may not give us as much “win now” factor, but he would be the safe pick by the organization. Imagine if he turns into a stud for a different team, it would be hard to justify the Harvin pick. If Sanchez is a bust, then you can’t fault the Vikings. Selecting a QB would suppress the hatered of some anti-Childress fans (I said some), create a buzz with the fan base, and overall is the safest pick both from a public relations stand point and the future success of the team. Win-win.

You could say the same for Harvin

Hell you could practically say that for anyone. If one of the 4th round QBs goes on to be great, people will find a way to fault Childress for that too. If Sanchez is a bust and they take him no one will ever let Childress live it down and picking him wouldn’t suppress any hatred for the man. Hell, according to some he hasn’t ever picked a QB that has worked for the team, why trust CHildress’s judgment if he thinks that Sanchez is that guy?
Either way, Sanchez wouldn’t be an immediate impact player and Harvin could be. I wouldn’t be surprised if Harvin could mirror Hester when he first came in, only Harvin is a better athlete IMO.

you could practically say that for anyone

Yes I know, hindsight is 20/20. That’s not what I was saying with my post. What I am saying is if we pick Sanchez and he is a bust and Harvin is the next Steve Smith (the Carolina one), that is much more forgiveable then if it was the other way around. Especially with the public perception that QB is an immediate need. Sanchez would be the safe pick and in my opinion the correct one if it was between him and Harvin.

I'm telling you guys

It doesn’t matter who we pick here at all. They won’t go WR in the first. I’m not sure they would go QB either. They may go OL, or DB - and that is my guess…

They will pass on QB and WR…

Sanchez would barely be a second rounder in next season’s draft and WR, well they just don’t draft WRs in the first round when the second and third round WRs work out nearly as well anyway, and they are half the money in later rounds.

You should be able to get a top OT or CB in this draft at 22. Shoot, maybe we could even move down a way and get the 4th rounder we gave for sage back…

If Harvin Was...

strictly a wide receiver they probably wouldn’t give him a second glance but his versatility makes him more valuable. Here is a player who can shore up more than one weakness on the team. He is a PLAYMAKER. This alone is a reason for the Vikes to consider him at #22 if he’s still available.

That would be a mistake

Going for a lineman, in this draft, in the first round, when the Vikes need more fire power at other positions, just doesn’t make a lot of sense.

WR or OL...

Would be fine with me. You have to build from the inside out. Absolutely have to. Ask Joey Harrington, David Carr, etc, etc. While the Vikings Offensive Line is nothing like the Lions or the Texans in those respective times, upgrading at that position is never a bad thing.

I think it all comes down to who is available when the Vikings are on the clock.

Make no mistake, an OT would be a solid, if un-sexy, pick that may not be flashy, but very, very practical. One pick for 10+ years? I’ll take it.

Weighting the Odds

I should clarify; I don’t mean that a lineman is a bad choice, only that unless you’re getting a monster, it’s probably not the best way to go in this draft. This draft is supposed to be deep and wide with good quality players at the lineman positions, and much thinner for quality players at the WR, QB, etc. With that in mind, if there’s a hot WR available when #22 rolls around, I think they should grab him because his like will not be available again til next year, maybe. On the other hand, there will still be good linemen available even in the third round.

That makes sense. I agree with this, it’s what they should do. I can see us doing this. Obviously they may think WR, because we brought in Housh. So they aren’t content with our recieving corps.

But yes, we could pick up a quality OLman in the second or third round who could come in and compete still.

Agree

I believe Minnesota picks a solid player for the front line or defensive back, which ever player is rated higher on the board. Childress has enough QB’s to train
