Where We Vote On the Vikings' Second-Round Pick in the SBNation Mock Draft
Yes, folks, we're getting to the time where our next pick will have to be submitted. This time, I think I can be relatively sure that there will be no changing, no backtracking, no flip-flopping, or anything of that nature.
We managed to get ourselves a quarterback in the first round of this draft after the dust completely settled, so I'm going to put guys out there for this go-around that play positions we need people at. As the best Viking fans on the planet, we all know what positions we're weak at. . .and, remember, there's always a write-in option to include names of folks that you feel should get a look by the Beloved Purple.
So, without any further ado, the floor is open to debate. I need to have the pick submitted by 9 PM Central time on Sunday, so that gives us about 48 hours to vote, discuss, and debate. Oh, and if it turns out that the guy that wins our poll is already gone by the time it gets around to our pick, I'll just move down the poll results until I find a guy that's available.
Let 'er rip, ladies and gentlemen!

I think they should go with Max Unger, C, Oregon
by HiWayRobry on Apr 10, 2009 6:25 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree
Unger from what I hear can play center , guard or tackle. A great security blanket to cover multiple spots. Especially if Sully or Cook can’t handle the center spot. A couple things to consider. Some mocks (quite a few actually ) have him falling to late 3 or early 4 pick. All depends who you believe. I have read he is fairly good size but one report (I don’t have it on hand) says his size was overly exagerated.
Maybe some of my favorite “wisemen” could shed some light on that for me.
PS That was not sarcastic. There are a lot of you I know will have the answer. So help me out statistic masters :) Ungers true size.

I don't
I think they could get him in third round — and even that might be a stretch. He could be around in the 4th too, although the Vikes don’t have a 4th round pick.
There are a lot of scouts who think that he’s smaller than what he was listed at Oregon and that his feet aren’t all that good for a guy who’s supposes to play multiple line positions.

I love both Alphonso Smith and Jamon Meredith. If the real draft plays out like this and the Vikes land Sanchez and one of these 2, I’d be walking on air.
OT is a more immediate need, so I voted for Meredith. But it wasn’t easy. I think Smith has a near perfect skillset to be an upper, upper level Tampa-2 CB in the mold of Ronde Barber/Antoine Winfield. It’d be hard to pass on him; maybe you could land an OT like Tupog or Parrish in the third round.

Desperate need for WR
I am a huge Fan of the Oklahoma Sooners and have been following Juaquin Iglesias progress through college and I believe he could be an immediate impact starter and compliment Bernard on the other side of the field. He may not be on the top of the list of WR’s in the draft to be taken in the first round, but he has great hands and is a great route runner. As well, he is always willing to adjust routes and extend himself to get the ball. Granted, he had an amazing QB in college so stepping into a program with T-Jack or Sage may be harder to adjust to since neither is very accurate, but Sidney Rice and Allison have had little to no impact since there rookie years so its about time we got someone who can produce!

Iglesias is okay but not great
He is a solid WR and will go over the middle and make the tough catch; on the other hand he is not fast by any means and will have a hard time getting separation, which is a problem we already have. He also is not that strong and could strugggle with bump and run coverage. He does have some experience returning kicks but that’s why we signed Glenn Holt. I could see us taking him in the 3rd rd if we don’t grab a WR here in the 2nd but not us taking him with a 2nd rd pick. Impact starter no but a complimentary WR yes.

the WR value in this draft
like last years is in the high to middle second round. after that there is no value in the WR’s in this draft. if we don’t take a WR in the 1-2 round, then we shouldn’t take one until 6-7 round. otherwise we are reaching for someone unlikely to crack the roster.

1st concern
is the Vikings need to take a RT in one of the first 2 rounds. With the Vikings taking Sanchez in the 1st, the immediate need is OT. The only way around this is if there were quite a few tackle that are still available. But according to this list, there is only one decent tackle left, so he will have to be snatched up. If he is the best RT left, the Vikings would be in a world of hurt if they don’t get him. Now, if there were still some names out there like Loadholt or Tupog, then the Vikings could wait to grab their RT and get a corner. I like either, but I agree with jianfu. Smith seems like a perfect “Tampa-2” corner to me.

Liked this report on Briton from CBS
Although he was able to use sheer size, strength and athleticism to be a force, Britton could have used another college season to hone his game. He started all 37 games he appeared in at Arizona, lining up at right tackle for the first 24 before shifting to left tackle in 2008. Britton is a very bright, high character type who was a team captain and is expected to work hard to get ever closer to his significant potential. His work ethic is reflected in his getting only four penalties in 2,461 snaps, according to coaches stats. His made 17 blocks that led directly to touchdowns in 2008. – Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com
Like what I see in him. If he drops to an early #2 pick should we move up to get him?

Here’s a cool profile examining Jamon Meredith, courtesy of draftguys.com.
And here’s Alphonso Smith.

We should definitely go with Alphonso Smith. The guy’s the next Winfield pretty much. The only knock on him is that he’s too small. If he was about 6 foot, he would definitely be a top 10 pick. I think we should nab him, in the mock draft and the real one.

+1
I am a big fan of Smith (and while I can’t actually speak for him, I think jianfu is too). I think he is the thrid best CB and might not make it out of the first round and if he does, probably goes earlier than the 22nd pick in the 2nd round. If he is there, I say take him. The Vikings have made quite a few trades in the 2nd – 5th rounds and I think that if there is an OT they like, they would be willing to give up some of the later picks to move up and get him, assuming the draft goes like this mock.

I am, though it doesn’t seem all our lobbying is working as Moore’s running with this right now.

UPDATE
As of a few minutes ago, Eric Wood is off the board.
So all three of you that voted for him thus far. . .well, sorry, I guess. (-:

I voted for Meredith
Because of need and his potential but he needs to get bigger and stronger. I have really taken to Smith lately and he does seem to be the second coming of Winfield. If any of you can remember Winfield was taken in the 1st rd ten years ago with the 25th pick so Smith would be a great pick here in the 2nd. I also like DJ Moore at CB but I don’t know if he is tough enough for this defense and what it asks of it’s CBs.

Being that we took Sanchez @ #22...We need somebody who can block for him and give him time to find the open reciever
University of Oklahoma offensive tackle Phil Loadholt fits that description, I mean christ the guy is 6 foot 8 and 332 pounds.
Loadholt has very long arms at 36 1/2 inches to lock out pass rushers, but still managed to bench press 225 pounds 24 times at the NFL Scouting Combine.
At the combine, Loadholt registered between 5.34 and 5.49 seconds in the 40-yard dash and posted a 29-inch vertical leap. He turned in an 8-9 broad jump at his Pro Day workout and bench pressed 225 pounds 26 times…Take him!

Sorry
knew Unger not a choice there. He maybe available as a 3rd. Loadholt was interesting and different folks have Britton falling or stable as a late 1st rounder.
This is gonna be kind of a bizzare draft. I think there will be a lot of surprize moves by teams, especially after the 1st ten picks are gone. This would be one draft that I would not want to be betting on picks. It will be interesting. Smith would be a good pick in the 2nd if available. Just gotta wonder what is going thru their heads at Winter Park.

I Like this guy
Assuming we take a RT in RD1 – BIG assumption I know, I like Connor Barwin. The guy is always making plays – dont see why he has to go to a 3-4 team. The guy is very good.

work ethic
Sneaky speed guy-Nate Swift University of Nebraska. His work ethic is unquestionable and he has good hands and decent size. Plus, he is from the area.
