In defense of Childress drafts

Looks like the Vikings, as with most NFL teams, are hunkering down and are focusing in on the draft, now less than two weeks away. Although many fans might disagree, the Vikings feel that their quarterback situation was adequately addressed during free agency, and Sagevaris Jacksonfels is their guy. So, what direction do the Vikings go? I was pretty high on Percy Harvin until revelations hit the presses about a positive drug test (high, get it?) at the NFL combine. Oh, MERCY Percy! (If you’ve never heard U of F radio announcer Mick Hurbert call a game, it’s a treat. Oh, my!) Anyways, if recent track record is any indication, there’s a good chance Harvin has been crossed off the Vikings draft board, along with 77 other turds, malcontents, or injury risks. They’ve been red-dotted, much in the same way the Navy Seals red-dotted the Somali pirates, the AAA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

As much grief as Brad Childress received for his drafting of Tarvaris Jackson, the quality of Vikings drafts has been as good as anyone in the NFL since they bottomed out with Mike Tice’s last draft in 2005, with not one, but two first round busts in Troy Williamson and Erasmus James. 2006 brought Chad Greenway, Cedric Griffin, Ryan Cook, and Ray Edwards. Greenway and Griffin have become key components for a top notch defense, and Cook has become a false start machine at RT. Seriously, in fairness to Cook, the kid never played tackle before the NFL, and he managed to beat out two veteran NFL tackles to win the job. He’s no All-Pro, but he’s not terrible, either. Give him a little slack. 2007 brought us Purple Jesus, Marcus McCauley, Brian Robison, and Sidney Rice. Rice had a promising rookie season and emerged as a serious red zone threat. He was slowed by a knee injury last season and never looked comfortable, but I think he has the ability to be a solid NFL receiver. Robison and Edwards rotated in at both defensive end positions, and have provided quality depth in Kenechi Udeze’s absence, combining for 9.5 and 7.5 sacks in two seasons. 2008 was a draft that was highlighted by the Jared Allen trade. It was costly, yes, but it netted…Jared…Allen. With their remaining picks, the Vikings drafted Tyrell Johnson in the second round, who looks to take over in the secondary for the now departed Darren Sharper. They also snagged backup QB JD Booty and the heir apparent at center in John Sullivan, a 6th rounder who will try to fill some might big shoes of another 6th round center that anchored the Vikings line for 10 years or so.

So all in all, I have no worries in the Vikings ability to manage the draft. I expect a starter or two, and quality throughout. It has become the trademark for Childress, Spielman, and Studwell, and I tip my cap to them.

You forgot to mention Allison

Who by the way had a very solid rookie year for our Special Teams. The Vikings have done quite well with their draft picks as of late and I credit Chilly, Spielman, and Studwell for it. They have picked quality talent and good character guys as well. For the few low picks we had last year I still think they made the most of it in picking two potential starters and some serviceable backups who could work their way onto the field within time. I am looking forward to who they bring in.

Can't complain about the drafts

In the 50/50, hit-or-miss world of the NFL draft, I definitely agree with you that the Childress regime has had significantly more hits than misses. I still have a few issues with the K.A.O. and game management, but I’ve been very pleased with the drafts of the past few years.

Adrian Peterson

I’ve noticed in the past a lot of people in the past have wrote off the Adrian Peterson pickup as a “duh” type of pick which is just dumb. There were 6 teams that passed on him and the Vikings already had a solid back in Chester. So really that was a great pick looking back.

Greenway is probably my favorite player on the Vikings, real life and in Madden.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

Lets stop falsely

attributing draft results to Chilly. Yes the drafts since Chilly has arrived have been of a higher calibur, however, Chilly is the coach, not director of player personel, not the Director of College Scouting. the Only draft where Chilli had any significant influence was his first and that influence was to reach for Cook and TJack.

I am all for giving credit where credit is clearly due, but I do not like attributing success in one area to others simply because they have a recognizable face and name.

gvie credit to Spielmen (who actually has final say on all picks), and Studwell the man responsible for scouting the players.

+1

Spielman and Studwell are the genius’ behind our recent draft success. Props should be to Childress for hiring Spielman, but that is where the props stops.

Let’s look at the players 3 years before Spielman and 3 years after Spielman started with the Vikes.

3 years prior to Spielman:

2005
Troy Wiliamson
Erasmus James
Marcus Johnson
Dustin Fox
Ciatrick Fason
CJ Mosley
Adrian Ward

2004
Kenechi Udeze
Dontarrious Thomas
Darrion Scott
Nat Dorsey
Mewelde MOore
Rod Davis
Deandre’ Eiland
Jeff Dugan

2003
Kevin williams
EJ Henderson
Nate Burleson
Onterrrio Smith
Eddie Johnson
MIchael Nattiel
Keenan Howry.

Out of those three years, I see only 3 players that made a positive impact on the team. Udeze, Kevin Williams and EJ.

SInce Spielman and Studwell came in, this is how our drafts have looked:

2006
Chad Greenway
Cedric Griffin
Ryan Cook
Tarvaris Jackson
Ray Edwards
Greg Blue

2007
Adrian Peterson
Sidney Rice
Marcus McCauley
Brian Robison
Aundrae Allison
Rufus Alexander
Tyler Thigpen
Chandler Williams

2008
Tyrell Johnson
John David Booty
Letroy Guion
John Sullivan
Jaymar Johnson

Granted, they are more recently drafted. But I would have to say that 14 out of 19 have some real value to this team, or could have been valuable if we kept them off waivers.

2005: Marcus Johnson was a useful lineman, although not as helpful as a 2nd round pick is expected to be.

2004: Dontarrious Thomas was useful, Darrion Scott led the team in sacks one year, and Mewelde Moore was a very effective player anytime the Vikes actually bothered to give him the ball. Moore is also one of the best Viking punt returners in team history. Jeff Dugan was still with the team last time I checked, which is about all one can ask of a 7th round blocking TE. I’ve seen him on the field, so presumably he’s thrown a few key blocks somewhere along the way.

2003: Nate Burleson led the team in receiving yards in 2004, and Onterrio Smith was the steal of the draft. He would have been the Vikings’ starting RB (and saved the team some $) in 2006 had it not been for the Whizzinator incident that basically ended his NFL career.

Scott Studwell has been in the personnel dept. for a long time, not just in the Speilman era.

Although I want to consider Sidney Rice useful, so far his best attributes are in the Madden universe. In the real world, he has accumulated only 46 catches for 537 yards in his first two NFL seasons. Todd Pinkston had 52 catches for 767 yards in his first two seasons, and he was no great shakes. We’ll see what happens this year, but it has to be a make-or-break year for him.

Spielman’s tenure has received criticism from day one.

A couple of more Corrections

first off, Chilli did not hire Spielmen, Zigi did. Studwell has been in the orginization for years and hhas long been regarded as a good if not great scout. differences in good drafts and bad drafts are more likely to be attributed to those who made the final descisions on the picks.

the second correction is that Speilmen was not here for the 2006 draft, so one can not attribute the success or failures of that class to Spielmen.

I didn’t suggest that Chilly did hire Spielman. (In fact, I think the article I liked to made that much clear at the very least.)

Fran Foley was in charge of the 2006 draft, and was dismissed shortly thereafter for lying on his resume (and for clashing with Childress, it had been rumored—odd considering that trading up for TJ and trading for Artis were clearly moves that Childress would have wanted).

No, I suggested that Childress had hired Speilman

I was making the assumption that Childress had brought in his own crew, and was not that up on the details of the front office.

I was happy to see Mewelde Moore go to the Steelers and get some actual touches.

I forgot to include him in my total of 4.

That is not saying that some of these people have produced an occasional good year or two, there was also the caveat that of course more recently drafted players are going to be starting.

Well said

I didn’t find those 2003-2005 draft particularly terrible. And I’ve long been a bit bothered by the Mewelde Moore thing. Moore is actually quite similar to Chester Taylor in that they’re both versatile backs (and Moore has the higher career per attempt averages in both rushing and receiving), but when Childress and, I think, Foley took over one of the first things they did was throw many millions at Taylor and bury Moore, who has since left but has been plenty good elsewhere. For the sake of argument, Even giving the Vikings the benefit of the doubt and Taylor’s the better player, is he really $10 million + better?

Anyway, without looking at any analysis, I’d guess the Vikings have a been a middle-of-the-road team in the draft. They’re definately not in the Indy/Pitt/Baltimore zip code, but they’re not Chicago either.

True...

If Taylor wasn’t as good as he is, I would have been much more upset at losing MeMo.

He is not only a great reciever/runner, but he can block as well. I remember watching him pancake Defensive Ends on occasion. Tough for a small guy.

by Bjorno on Apr 16, 2009 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed

he was too good to be a #3. But he could not crack the #2 spot from Taylor. Taylor has got to be the best #2 in the game. I think he’s got more talent than at least 10 #1’s. He runs the screen with the best of them. And he can still get it done between the tackles.

I wouldn't go that far

First, MM had a great year with the Steelers, who also had a great year as a team. So did the VIkings the last time they gave MM a decent share of touches, but that must be a coincidence.

CT only averaged 4.0 yards per carry in 2006 with perrennial pro bowl FB Tony Richardson blocking for him. I saw something on advanced football stats or football outsiders which ranked him the 33rd or 34th best RB in the NFL that year. He is an outstanding #2 and 3rd down back, though.

(2007’s 8-8 record doesn’t make Childress look very good given the fact that he had the rookie AP, CT, and T-Rich and MM, which must be one of the best offensive backfields in years and could possibly rank high all-time.)

I Love It...

Credit where its due! Childress gets credit for Cook and Jackson, subsequently the two players perceived to have underachieved and/or failed to live up to expectations. Others get the credit for draft choices who, conversely, have panned out.

It is brilliant.

by LoveHate on Apr 15, 2009 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

In the First year

we had the Triangle of Authority with Chillie, Fran Foley and Berzynski(sp?), all takeing equal decision making authority. then Foley was exposed as a liar and fired. Foley was not just replaced by speilmen Zigi scraped hsi triangle, Spielmen has sole authority on personel decisions including the draft. So Chillie gets at least partial credit for the success of the first draft. less so in subsequent drafts.

Agreed.

People’s perception of Childress skews things. But that’s only natural.
