BOOM! Madden Retires
Somewhere right now, Frank Caliendo and Brett Favre are weeping.
Longtime coach, broadcaster, and (in my opinion, most importantly) video game icon John Madden is hanging up his microphone. It was quite a run for the 73-year-old Hall of Fame, bus-riding, Favre-loving master of the obvious. He had been in the booth announcing NFL games for various networks since 1979.
Say what you will about the guy, but there is no questioning that he has been a gigantic (no pun intended) part of the NFL's image for...well, at least my entire 27 years on this planet. He coached the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory over...some team from Minnesota that you may have heard of. I believe this is why I've been genetically predisposed to be eternally annoyed by the guy, but I will say he was an excellent coach. He still holds the best winning percentage of any coach in NFL history. Even better than Childress! Amazing!
Of course, my generation reveres John not for his coaching or broadcasting acumen but for the wonderful gift he and EA Sports give to us each August. Yes, the one place where the Vikings hold roughly a .996 winning percentage all-time on my consoles throughout the years--Madden NFL. The video game juggernaut has given football fans countless wasted hours, reasons to call in sick, and sore thumbs since 1993. (Note: I know the franchise began before that, but they didn't get the actual NFLPA teams and names until that year. I consider everything prior to 1993 "Madden B.C.") So sure, like me, you may be rejoicing the fact that you'll no longer have to hear John's "analysis" consisting of reiterating what you just saw with your own eyes. Just remember what he has brought to the game--both real and virtual.
While I can't say I'm incredibly sad to see him leave the booth, I'll still give credit where credit is due. John Madden was, is, and will be an NFL icon. This turducken's for you big guy.
Feel free to share your favorite (or least favorite) Madden memories in the comments section below.

I personally love the Maddenisms in the game. Granted, they get a bit redundant after a while but there are limitations in the amount of sayings they can load on those discs.
I for one, hope John spends a good 4 months recording new Maddenisms for future games, it just would not be the same without him.
I still think he should do 1 or 2 games a year.

I am so incredibly happy now.
I mean, it’s funny to listen him talk every now and then, but please, I want to actually, you know, learn something valuable that I don’t already know. Or just be told what’s happening on the field. That’s fine too.
But I will always be thankful for his video game ;D

I liked Madden...
He was a great announcer and his slow descent into dementia was equally entertaining.
“Ninety percent of the game is half mental.”
Yes it is, John, yes it is.

Madden said it...
In one of the Madden games on the PS2. Maybe it was 2003? Or 2004? Something like that.

John Madden was the most overrated "analyst" ever
to curse a microphone in the NFL. I’ll never, ever forget his total idiocy in the Pats first Super Bowl win when he was advocating that they play for OT when it was painfully obvious they were wearing down and the Rams coming on. Good riddance although his bride must be disappointed.

I will miss those
comments that were so obvious it was funny. However, I think his reason for retirement may actually be Favre… if you know what I mean…

Haha… now they can retire to a nice quite life in the country together.

Favre's hands...
How was he even able to hold on to the football with those?? And Madden’s…bet he left a nice mark on you-know-who’s backside after the weekly “Good Game” swat!
Major props on the pic.

Is that how it works? I figured Favre would be the man in that relationship. Nice bit of photoshopping though!

Now I can watch Sunday night football!
Being old enough to remember the Vikings getting beat by Madden’s Raiders, I have always hated him. I have hated him more for stating the obvious during TV games. Like after a team needed 3 yards for a first down and only got 2 yards, coming out with something brilliant like “I don’t think getting 2 yards on that play is what the team was looking for.” Really, I thought they didn’t want to get a first down because they need their punter to get more kicks during game conditions!

I was actually happy about the news until finding out Collinsmouth is the replacement. Maybe Madden learned something from his idol and he will come out of retirement right before the season starts.

"When a reciever catches a pass in the endzone, that's a touchdown."
Truer words have never been said, John Madden.

See, the team with the most points at the end of the game will be the winner.
Au revoir, John Madden. You drove me insane, but you’ll still be missed on Sundays.

Finally
I’ve disliked him for decades, yes decades. One elbow equals two feet. I’m not gonna miss the guy at all, what a TOOL. My Thanksgivings will all be brighter, and I’ll give thanks that he is gone.

Damn right and we'll never again have to hear that slob
blabbering on Thanksgiving Day about “turduckens”. He was also vastly overrated as a coach since as everyone knows the Raiders were, are and will be (as long as he’s alive) Al Davis’s team. Everyone remembers the truly great coaches for some innovation be it Lombardi’s “Green Bay sweep”, Tom Landry’s “flex” defense, Bill Walsh’s “West Coast” offense, Don “Air” Coryell and Joe Gibbs’s “counter trey”. Can anyone name one Madden innovation? I cannot.

“Now the center…he’ll snap the ball to the quarterback. If he hands it to the runningback, it’ll probably be a run. But he keeps it and drops back, he’ll probably throw it.”

I am very sad right now.
Madden was the reason I tuned into Sunday Night Football. He was the male version of “Lady Redundant Woman.” I could always count on his general cluelessness to bring me a laugh.
My younger sister was brought into football purely because she loved the way Madden talks. Trust me, she can do a killer impression.

Super Bowl Dispositions
I’ve never liked Madden all these years because of that game, never even considered buying a game with his name on it. But truth is, the hate-on for Madden was nothing compared to the hate-fear-respect I had for Tom Landry. Thank God that man’s gone, although at the same time, I thought it was pretty crappy the way he was dumped by Dallas at the end. Madden knew the game well in his hey-day, I’ll give him that, but as an announcer, he wasn’t nearly as much fun as How-ward Co-sell. All in all, it’s a good thing this announcement about Madden was made, otherwise I might not notice that he’s gone.

I still remember...
… one of the comments Madden made in one of the EA games. Something about ‘most coaches build their teams around their offensive lines but every now and then a player of rare talent comes along and a team must build around him. Randy Moss is THAT kind of player’. I’ve probably gotten the words all wrong but the meaning is the same. He always gave the Vikings credit for being a good team and has on more than one occasion called the ’98 Vikings the best offense ever. He also loved to talk about ice fishing whenever he covered the Vikings and I especially remember the Vikings win over the Cowboys 46-36 on Thanksgiving ’98.
Being from the UK, and therefore starved of decent coverage, Madden has become an icon over here. Al Michaels has only just started to get known over here (though I first heard of him when he did the comentary on the old Joe Montana’s Football game ’he’s at the 5, the 10, the 15, the 20, the 25, the 30, the 35’ and so on, way back when…), and I’m not sure anyone could really take the place of Madden alongside him. I for one hopes that Madden will still turn up with his Turducken for Thanksgiving, regardless of who carries the games.

Frank Caliendo...
Is probably the saddest one of all. Someone should put him on suicide watch. Frank should send John a basket with a few Turduckens or something, because Madden basically made Frank’s career!

I agree with the sentiment that he won't be missed
except for the idiotic things he said. But Troy Aikman is still doing games, so he can grow old and stupid like Madden did and no one will ever know the difference.
The thing about Brett Favre is, as a quarterback, Brett Favre can be your quarterback in sticky situations. When he gets the snap, you really want the ball in his hands. But later, you want it in the receiver’s hands, or if not, you’ve just had a run, and a run by Brett Favre isn’t as impressive as a pass by Brett Favre. But there’s no doubt in my mind that when you look at the greatest quarterbacks that have played the game, Brett Favre is not only right up there with the best, but he’s got to be rated among the very best ever.
