RT and the NFL Draft

Q: In 2008, how many starting RTs were drafted in the first round?

A: According to pro-football-reference.com's starter depth chart, 9.

Vernon Carey (Dolphins, #19 in 2004)
Damien Woody (Jets, #17 in 1999 by Patriots)
Willie Anderson (Ravens, #10 in 1996 by Bengals)
Marc Columbo (Cowboys, #29 in 2002 by Bears)
John Tait (Bears, #14 in 1999 by Chiefs)
Gosder Cherilus (Lions, #17 in 2008)
Jeff Otah (Panthers, #19 in 2008)
Levi Brown (Cardinals, #5 in 2001)
Alex Barron (Rams, #19 in 2005)

Naturally, as a Vikings fan I'm looking at this vis a vis the potential of the Vikings drafting Eben Britton in the first round. Looking at it like this, we can almost eliminate most of these names.

Woody, Anderson, and Tait are all vets who have long moved off their original positions (Woody was a center in the day, the other two were LTs)

Columbo and Brown are LT busts, playing RT by default.

Carey's sort of unique. He had been promoted to LT in 2007, but then the Dolphins drafted Long and he moved back to RT. So it's tough to say how much of that is due to Carey's limitations, or the fact his team sprung for a guy considered a franchise talent.

That leaves Cherilus, Otah, and Barron as potential comparisons. These guys were drafted in the 1st round as RTs, or at least 2nd-best OTs. Cherilus is maybe on the fence with that statement, but he was never considered an elite pass protector as a prospect, and was maybe caught up in the OT hullaballo last draft. Otah and Barron were drafted into situations with well established/regarded starters (Gross and Pace) at OT. Outside of these two (or three), it seems the 1st round RT is a rare beast.

Now, the tricky part is I believe RT is maybe the team's biggest need. They absolutely, positively cannot whiff at that position in this draft, not unless they want to fall back on game-but-overmatched Artis Hicks. From that perspective, Britton is an intriguing choice. More than anything, the 1st round isn't necessarily about difference makers or franchise-calibur talents (although you take them when they're there), it's about consistently finding good starters. If Britton lives up to some of his comparisons (Michael Roos, Eric Winston, Jon Runyan), he'd be well worth the #22 pick.

OTOH, this quick and dirty (and hardly infallible) ditty of analysis suggests the vast majority of teams get by finding RTs later in the draft. And if the Vikings do their homework and/or get lucky and pick the right guy out of the 2nd-tier group with guys like Jamon Meredith, Troy Kropog, and Gerald Cadogen, they don't need to burn their first pick to address a problem. (Or they hope a guy like Oher falls, who has a chance to boot McKinney over to the right side.)

I'm honestly torn on this. Given the team needs playmakers, maybe they should hold off on OT til later. But as I said, they cannot whiff on the O-lIne. It's really that bad/thin. And regardless of what position you're discussing, your chances of finding starters decrease substantially the further down the draft you go. Guess we'll see.

So torn...

I want Harvin pretty bad. But, you make a good case. I’m inclined to think, though, that we could still add pro-level strength at RT in the 2nd round. Question is: is that strength that would be ready to start in 2009, as Britton probably could?

I think the Vikings have tried to be suave and land offensive linemen later in the draft, but they haven’t really hit on one yet, most notably with Cook. Their line is what it is mainly due to a pre-regime first rounder in McKinney, a pre-regime 6th rounder in Birk, and a huge FA splurge in Hutchinson (who was a 1st rounder).

That’s not to say they can’t ever do it. I’ve come to the conclusion that unless you’re drafting a potential LT, then 1st round probably isn’t the most efficient avenue towards acquiring an OT. OTOH, given the position the Vikings find themselves, if they try to wait until later and miss, they could be screwed. IOW, Britton’s probably not my first choice, but I’d be fine with him given the downside of the alternative.

Also, I hope they don’t take Loadholt. Too many penalties; probably not athletic enough to play in the zone scheme. If they wait until round 2, I hope they can get a relatively athletic OT.

I say if their WR guy is available in round 1 you snatch him then get a RT and CB later. If hes not take the best player available in rd 1

I’m kind of leaning right now to snatch Oher if he falls to us, otherwise to happily land Harvin in the first round.

As I've said before...

If the Vikings drafted Oher, I would promptly Jizz in my Pants.

Perfectly normal...

Nothing wrong with me, but we’re going to need a clean up on aisle three.

I Think Oher

would be great if he is available, otherwise I think Phil Loadholt is a nice second round option.

Lets just take the best WR available in the first round and the best RT available in the second round. Then get a CB third round. After that I have no clue since in my mind those are the only holes we need to fill. I’d like them to fill the QB spot but that could be stupid given the 3 QB’s on the roster.

If given the reigns i’d probably draft a fourth round Center to compete with Sullivan. Then 5th round go with the BPA, then use the two seventh round picks on replacements for old guys like Kleinsasser.

Take Percy

Hilarius Manimal, Yes RT is a position of concern. MOST games are won or lost in the trenches, but we can’t pass on a playmaker. We should be able to find someone in round 2 or 3 to get the job done, or maybe we already have someone who can get the job done. I personally think Cook is our 2009 starting center. DRAFT PERCY

WR's not the answer

WRs can be found anywhere – and Sidney Rice still has talent, he’s just been hurt. Not to mention that there’s no WR in this draft (past Crabtree and Maclin) who are so good that they can mask our QBs’ deficiencies.

Solidify the lines. Berrian’s good enough to be the #1, and possession guys always – always – slip to the middle/late rounds just because they aren’t sexy and don’t often have the speed that catches eyes of GMs.

And Harvin....

Harvin’s even more frail than Rice, and isn’t the possession guy we need.

I say go OT in the first round.

We need a solid anchor on the line, and we are not going to find it in free agency.

We can wait until the 2nd or 3rd round for a reciever. Harvin may have been drafted in the first round, but then he got high. He was gonna catch the fricken ball, but then he got high.

Even if he is not available in round #2, Brian Robiskie should be there and I kinda like that guy. He seems very intelligent.

I just think there is going to be a run on tackles in the 1st round this year. Britton might be there, but is worth the 22nd pick?

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Apr 23, 2009 3:38 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he’s not going to last until our second round pick, which he probably won’t, then yes. He is. It’d be a bitch to pass on him because the F.O. doesn’t think he’ll be a good value at that pick, and then to watch him thrive for some other team.

by Frost on Apr 23, 2009 8:17 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that he should be a decent RT

I just don’t think he is worth the 22nd pick. I think He would be too much of a reach. Most mocks I’ve seen have him going in the 2nd. I think it would be better to grab a RT in the 2nd round, because that player would have similar talents as Britton, but taken in the 2nd round instead of the 1st, therefor adding additional value to the pick
