Quarterbacks
Just a guess but there probably isn't anyone on the board that is satisfied with the QB situation. This brings me to my question...what QB would you like to see the Vikings take in the draft.
I'm under the opinion that JDB is pretty worthless. I'd like them to take a guy in the 4-6 rounds and work with him. Some guys I like:
Nate Davis
Stephen McGee
Rhett Bomar
I've seen all of these guys play (Live in Nebraska and go to the university) and they all strike me as intriguing players that might be worth a later round pick.
Davis in particular I feel is being thrown under a bus for a supposed learning disability.
McGee is a phenomenal athlete that isn't prone to making mistakes. I really want this guy above all the others.
Bomar has got several tools. He's a strong dude but an unorthodox throwing style bothers me.
So who do you guys want if you can draft anyone at QB?

I pick...
None. The QBs simply suck in the lower end of this draft.

Except, of course
for Tom Brady.
and Matt Cassell.
and Brad Johnson.
and Marc Bulger.
and Trent Green.
and Derek Anderson.
and Mark Brunell.
and Mark Rypien.

Really, they’re going to be available this draft?

The thing is, most of the guys were probably over-looked by people who thought that there wasn’t any point drafting that far down the order. I’d add Kurt Warner to fourstick’s list.
Something to consider though is that Johnson, Bulger and Warner all got time to develop in NFL-Europe (and maybe some of the others too). If you draft a late round QB, where do they get a chance to develop these days?
I can’t see the Vikes taking a late QB having taken Booty last year.

Yeah, they probably were. But look how small that list is. The odds of finding that good QB in the lower rounds is highly improbable, which is what makes Tom Brady’s story so intriguing.
And no I don’t see the need for us to waste a pick on a QB either.

It's a crapshoot.
It’s always a crapshoot-just goes to show that putting us in this position is another crappy Childress move.
On to the QBs…. at that level you could get a star or a shmuck. There is no guarantee that any of the college stats or even films are going to identify the right pick.
I think that once a QB is selected, it becomes a race to make the offense work-he needs a line that can protect, he needs a running game that can mix it up and take the pressure off, he needs the O-coordinator to call a game to his strengths…..and the list goes on.
I watched Tim Couch go down in flames after a stellar career in college and what did I learn? It’s the rest of the offense that allows a QB to reach his potential. Why do you think Dan Marino bought all those pigs gloves for Christmas???? Had to show them the love…and keep their hands warm in south Florida, in December…..I’m out.

QB Development Time
When we’re talking about drafting QBs, it’s the rare QB who has the ability to step straight from college into NFL shoes and lead an NFL offense. It happens, but those guys are rare phenoms and you can’t even expect your #1 draft pick QB to be one of them. Most NFL QBs take time to develop, 1-3 years carrying the clipboard, learning from mentors (QB coaches, veteran QBs), and even when they’re ready to step out and actually play, it still might take a few more years before they catch fire.
Even if this year’s draft was filled with great QB choices (which it isn’t), that’s what the Vikings would be facing; another 3 year development project. By the time we roll down to #22, the 3 really good looking QB prospects are likely to be long gone. Anyone that’s still around come round 3 is not going to be worth wasting a draft 3rd round draft pick on, not when the Vikes have other needs that have a higher percentage of working out with that 3rd round draft pick (WR, RT, CB, RB).
Part of the problem seems to be that the past few years have seen damned few truly good QBs coming out of college, so many of the ones that were supposed to be great prospects turned out to be long development projects or busts or just mediocre. The Vikes aren’t the only team out there with a T-Jack. As a consequence, it’s ridiculous how many teams are on the hunt for a good QB, they came out of the woodwork when Cutler went up for grabs. Mention the QBs in this draft and teams you thought were good to go are suddenly interested (the Redskins come immediately to mind). For some reason the little leagues aren’t turning out great prospects for QB these days, maybe a smart team will look a bit further afield. The CFL is definitely a possibility there.
Anyway, my point was, forget the QBs in this draft, at best that’s pie-in-the-sky. At worst, it’s flushing away a draft pick to get something the Vikings have already made clear they don’t really want.
