2009 NFL Draft Open Thread - Day Two
Alright, folks, we're about 30 minutes away from Day Two of the 2009 NFL Draft, and there's still plenty of talent to be had. As it stands right now, your Minnesota Vikings have a third-round selection, a fifth-round selection, and two seventh-round selections.
I may not be here straight away, as my long-neglected yard is going to get the mowing it needs before it gets too hot outside, but rest assured, I'll be here.
Until then, feel free to discuss Day Two right here!

If D.J. Moore is somehow there
When we make our third round pick, we need to grab him, I think.

Gilbert for Chicago? I thought he was more of a 3-4 d lineman. Maybe they like him as a DT because he is too big to play DE every down in a 4-3.
I don't know
Richard Dent was a big guy and was….ok? Imagine Gilbert and Edwards rotating in and out for us…fresh and hard-hitting.
Bit of a reach for the Cowboys
But I guess the Vikings’ had some interest in Williams, too.

Oh sorry..
It wasn’t Al Davis, it was Matt Shaughnessy crying that he was taken by the Raiders. He REALLY didnt want to go to them. I told him to suck it up for a couple years, then move to another team.
Marv Lewis..
I think, listening to Marv Lewis right now, that I understand why the Bengals have had such off the field problems recently. He’s really trying to rationalize Andre Smith right now.
Do the Lions not care that by not drafting a tackle...
They are signing a death warrant for Stafford? Seriously, Allen will tear the entire offensive line to shreds.
I’d be very disappointed if I were a Lions fans.

I thought O-Line might be a possibility, but Spielman’s said they only look to suit up 7 or 8 linemen. So: McKinney, Hutchingson, Sullivan, Herrera, Loadholt, Cook, Hicks makes 7. Am I forgetting anyone?
I’m a Jamon Meredith fan. He can play 4 positons, and some think he has starting LT potential, as he’s athletic and long. And he stood out in the bad @ss SEC. Might be good value, given their chances of solving their line issues increase with two new guys in the mix, and if he and Loadholt both pan out, maybe you suddenly have a valuable trade chit in McKinney.
But that’s probably getting too far down the mine shaft, given their other needs.
Couple of Guards in a row, but I don’t think the Vikings were looking to get one. Come on Moore, keep hanging in there.
But neither of them
Were Duke Robinson, who I like a lot.
If Moore isn’t there, Robinson wouldn’t be a bad get for the Vikings.

New England’s draft look pretty good – S Chung, DT Brace, CB Butler,OT Sebastian Vollmer and WR Tate. Those are some darn good players.

We took Allen over Moore
Because of his toughness and he is a much better tackler which is a requirement in our defensive scheme for CBs. Allen played this year with a broken hand and didn’t flinch at contact, in fact he brings it. He is also great at the return game which is an added plus. Moore is slow and not tough by NFL standards but he does have playmaking ability. We’ll see him twice a year with Chicago and find out who was the better pick. Allen also has better closing speed.
asher allen
he is a kick off return specialist, set single season Georgia record for kick return yards
Asher Allen scouting report from Mocking the Draft
http://www.mockingthedraft.com/2009/2/11/756841/scouting-report-asher-alle
Strengths: Allen is a strong cornerback who can match up nicely against bigger receivers. Possesses very good agility, which he can utilize against quick, shifty receivers. Might be best lining up on the inside at the beginning of his career. Played strictly in man coverage at Georgia, which helped him develop the tools of a top cornerback. For a cornerback, Allen excels at playing the run. His strength allows him to get off receiver blocks and make a play. Has good speed but it takes him a bit of time to get up to his top gear. Added value as a kick returner.
Weaknesses: Lack of height hurts Allen the most. He’ll often lose out on jump balls against taller targets. Needs to do a better job of reading his receiver instead of the quarterback. Too often bite a quarterback’s fake. Hands are average, but Allen will be downgraded in this area due to a broken hand in 2008. Still, he only had three interceptions in his career. Catches in his body. Gets overly aggressive and get beat to the inside.
Final word: Allen didn’t have a lot of passes thrown his way during the 2008 season following his stellar 2007. That, combined with a broken hand, make him look like a puzzling early entrant. He may have improved his draft stock some by returning for his senior year, but Allen will be a solid starter at the next level. Packed with upside. Named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and the Lott Trophy. Played really well in Georgia’s last two bowl games.
Round projection: 3
Sounds like they’re looking for Winfield’s replacement to me.

And the Ravens take Webb at CB after the Asher selection. Something must be up with Moore. I understand he had a disappointing offseason, but he was considered a top 4 or 5 CB when he declared.
Asher’s supposed to be a stud in the return game, too. Maybe they won’t need to rush/risk Harvin in that role.
I’m not sure if I would have gone for CB depth, but if Asher can beat out guys like Sapp and Paymah in their nickel package and bring some juice to the return game, he’ll be ok.
Anybody remember former Vikings CB Corey Fuller? Don’t know much about Allen, but Fuller was definatly “fiesty.”
Yeah, or after a certain point, you wonder if teams just get suspicious, since he’s slipped this far. And it almost becomes a snowball situation.
Or maybe he was just overrated by the blogosphere…
At any rate, I think he was an underclassmen. That always sucks to see an underclassman slide.
I wasnt sold on Pervin earlier
But after listening to his pre-draft and post-draft interviews, and reading a UofF poster’s (Natty something) about how his life was like at the school, all-in-all….I think he will be perfect for us. (Plus Cris Carter likes him).

Should we try to move up a little in the 5th if Kropog is on the board? Ther is also Harrell, and the Dude from Sam Houston St. I liked the film on him. And the other was Brohm from A&M??? Cincy is doing pretty good
Who do ya’ll think has the best draft so far?
by CitrusFLViking on Apr 26, 2009 11:22 AM CDT reply actions
3 answers to that question
1st answer: Us! Because we are Vikings fans and the picks were pretty good for what we need.
2nd answer: New England by virtue of their wheeling and dealing led to 4 2nd round picks and a ton of other picks, both this year and next year. Since they have a solid team and a proven record as winners, they can afford to keep messing with their draft and get a ton of non-1st rounders, finding that diamond in the rough.
3rd answer: Arizona. Arizona because they added two spots that hurt during the Superbowl (RB and Def). Gives them a good shot to get back there, even without Boldin, if he doesnt stick around (think Steve Breaston). Cincy has made some great picks as well.
Amen on the US
Don’t get me wrong I like our picks a lot. Was just trying to get a grip on teams like us who are efeectively addresing needs.

Man, I've gotta say, I like our draft A LOT.
by Anthony Carter on Apr 26, 2009 11:23 AM CDT reply actions
I’m still shocked they didn’t take Oher. (Potential franchise LTs don’t fall to #22 everyday). For that reason, I feel a little weird about it. If Oher lives up to his potential, Harvin might have to become the next Eric Metcalf—a once in a generation gadget guy/slot receiver—to make it worthwhile. (Which, to be fair, some might say is Harvin’s potential.) Oher could’ve also made McKinney a valuable trade chit.
But I agree they’ve done decent. A lot of upside, but a lot of risk, but maybe they figure they’re a 10-6 team that needs to roll the dice. They really attacked their needs. And their offense should have a whole new dynamic. For as much fun as we poke at the KAO, it is predicated on guys taking those 3-yard passes and creating something out of them, and the KAO has never had a guy with Harvin’s potential to do that at a highly dangerous level. Let’s hope he does that, and gives them enough juice to be the type who can stretch the defense horizontally and give AP more room.
And I’ve got to hand it to them: they read the “runs” perfectly. That is, they took a WR in the 1st, and WRs went early this year, and they sprung for their biggest immediate need in the 2nd, when the OTs were just hanging around. It was the polar opposite of last year at those positions.
I think Seattle’s had an underrated weekend. Curry, Unger, Deon Butler (whom I like a lot), and an extra first-rounder. Outside of them, I like New England.
Is it the best, not sure.
But we’ve had a huge talent/position ratio at exactly the positions we were targeting.
by Anthony Carter on Apr 26, 2009 11:24 AM CDT reply actions
and the winner so far...
I would go with denver as the best draft so far…just cause they picked so many players in first two rounds thanks to the cutler fiasco
not the Raiders?
You just wait and see…their 7th round draft picks that went in the 2nd and 3rd rounds will be this year’s super MVPs and will single-handedly take them to the SB!

Signing in from Kuwait
Hey guys,
I haven’t seen a single pick but want to thank you for the colorful commentary. I know the Vikes selected Harvin, Loadholt and Asher Allen. So far it is decent. I wonder if the Allen pick was a little motivation for Antoine to get his extension signed? I hope so, then the kid can learn from the best small corner in the business.
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a Viking to raze a village.
I think Allen was more incentive for McCauley to get his ass in gear than it was to send a message to Winfield.
Could be
Plus the kid will have at least this season to watch, absorb and learn as much as possible. We will know how good he is by seeing if he can win the nickleback role.
You may be right about McCauley. He showed so much promise two seasons ago, then drop off the planet last year.

I would prefer Jason Cook
Per CNNSI:
POSITIVES: Terrific lead blocker with outstanding vision and skill. Quick out of his stance, accelerates into blocks, and removes defenders from the action. Displays the ability to get around the corner and creates space for running backs. Nasty and looks to hit as many defenders as possible on every play. Displays good blocking vision, picks up blitz assignments, and effective in pass protection. Shows good hands on the few occasions he is asked to catch the ball.
Here is the rest of the report:
NEGATIVES: Rarely asked to handle the ball at Mississippi.
ANALYSIS: Cook flew under the radar screens for most of the past three years yet on film he looks as good as any fullback in the country. Despite his marginal production handling the ball Cook possesses the athleticism to help out as an offensive threat. He’ll likely fall into the late rounds of the draft yet could easily make a roster at the next level.
PROJECTION: Fifth Round
The guy is an upgrade over Nafahu F**kin Tahi..
I hate Tahi with a passion..Yes i want this guy with our 5th round pick
I’m not saying that it doesn’t get use at all but rather people just respond with a new post every time instead of staying under the same topic. It makes this hard to read.
Well its a live blog atm. If this were more of a discussion, you’d see the reply used alot more. But since it’s about live action, using the reply button means you likely lose out on some discussion because people may not be scrolling back up to see what they’ve missed. I know that I’m not really doing it.
I wanted Mitch King
the guy will be a good player for a long time and will prove himself.
Here’s a report-
POSITIVES: Tough, run defending inside linebacker who projects as a two down defender. Plays disciplined football, stacks well against the run and wraps up tackling. Stout at the point, holds his ground against blocks and effectively uses his hands to protect himself. Forceful up the field and plays with authority.
NEGATIVES: Marginal skills in coverage and does more chasing opponents down the field rather than defending the pass. Lacks the quick change direction and plays with just average speed.
ANALYSIS: Brinkley looked like a star in the making after his junior season in 2006 but was set back by the knee injury the following season. He’s best playing downhill and could effectively fill the inside linebacker position of a 3-4 alignment.
From Mocking Dan at Mocking the Draft
Vikings trade up to take Jasper Brinkley. That’s a very good choice. Brinkley slimmed down and was healthy during offseason workouts. He has a chance to be a premier run stopper at the next level.
Brinkley sounds like a special teamer
It’s an interesting pick. . .I can’t necessarily explain it, but it’s interesting.

My theory
Here’s what CBS Sports says on him:
02/07/2009 – PRO POTENTIAL: LB Jasper Brinkley — Two years removed from a 107-tackle season, Brinkley made 65 stops in 2008 as he bounced back from an injury that cost him all of 2007. He’s probably a late second-day pick at this point.
Player Ratings
Position Overall…Pos….Rank…Proj. Round
ILB……………………. 94……….. 4…………. 3
My theory is that our only decent linebacker backups are Heath Farwell (great heart but a little small) and Erin Henderson. I think the Vikings were looking for another quality backup and a little more the right size. He is listed as 6-1 5/8, 249.
Also, I’m sure they want him as a second Farwell on special teams.
It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a Viking to raze a village.
Off-topic real quick

It’s about damn time some of these companies get smart. Security guards cost alot less than the millions they have to pay in ransom, as well as the money they lose from cargo that is sitting in a pirate port.

Hey Lof
A while back I wrote something on Favre pulling something off. How I am not on that wagon but it still made some sense. Briefly, Farve didn’t want to go toNY and distanced himself, played well enough for 9 games and mysteriously has a sore arm, retires with no tearful conference or fanfare, Brett wants to play in Minn and realizes they wil pick up another QB probobly at a high price (Sanchez it turns out. Bet you one month after Sanchez gets his $ Brett calls the Jets and says “I’m unretiring” They can’t pay 3 QB’s and tell Brett no. He gets his release.
I am really starting to think that might happen. Do I want it ?-only to stick in GB’s face. Other thant that, no. But I would not be shocked to see it come down.
I Don't Doubt You
It’s not a stretch to believe that the wheels in Favre’s mind have been turning ever since Green Bay traded him. I believe he’ll do almost anything to get back at them.
Agreed
I remember your post on that and believe that he may be thinking of something in those terms. However, I am not sure he will be received as well by Viking fans this year as he might have been last year. I dont want anything to do with the drama of “will he or wont he retire”. I like stuff that looks solid for the long haul, and Favre aint it.
