Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

The Vikings addressed their defensive backfield at #86 with the selection of Georgia CB Asher Allen. Linked is his scouting report from SBNation's outstanding draft site, Mocking the Draft.

yeah...

I was initially disappointed because I wanted the still available D.J. Moore…. and I still do. But oh well, I did some research on this Allen guy after we picked him and he looks pretty physical, which I like, but he doesn’t have amazing speed. He’s got the Antoine Winfield type look but I don’t think he has the Alphonso Smith qualities of having a nose for the ball.

For me, first disappointing pick of the Viking’s draft.

He doesn't have the speed

Allen does have exceptional agility, pretty good acceleration, and can change direction and move more fluidly than Cedric Griffin, according to that scouting report. Many CBs have been selected with worse than 4.48 40 times, too.

I was hoping for Moore (or Kevin Barnes, but he was picked before #86) or one of the remaining T/Gs like Herman Johnson since Herrera, Hicks, and Hutch are all getting long in the tooth (and the Vikes may be able to do better than Herrera/Hicks at RG).

So, who gets cut? Gordon, Paymah, McCauley, or Sapp?

Sapp

McCauley. I doubt they’d cut Sapp.

I like this Pick

As a UGA alum, I have watched Asher Allen for many years. He isn’t the fastest CB, but he was a great leader on the D for Georgia. He is a good tackler and a hard hitter and should be a good nickle corner with the potential to be the #2 corner. He will never be a shut-down corner but will fit well into the cover-2 that the Vikes like to play.
