Udeze a draft bust?

Kenechi Udeze. DE. 2004 Rd. 1 20th Pick

I was readin this article on supposed draft busts and came accross the list listing Udeze as a draft bust.

NBC-Draft Busts

I am not willing to name Udeze a bust. He has been solid at DE and can more than hold his own. Missing the 2008 season after being diagnosed with Leukemia, is sure to bring digress him back a bit but should make a stronger contribution once at 100 percent.

I was wondering what your guys' thoughts were on this. Are you ready to lable Udeze a NFL Draft Bust?

Well, he’s a DE and they’re considered being effective when they get sacks. That said, he hasn’t been productive at getting sacks, and went a whole season without one in fact. The fact he was a first round pick only compounds this “disappointment” so, technically, yes, he’s a bust at this point. But he can still be useful to the team.

I Agree....

he deserves another chance at showing what he might have once healthy again.

hardly!

Yes, the guy went a year without sacks, and another laid up with cancer. In all fairness, nobody got many sacks that year. He’s definitely not a speed-rusher, so he plays on the left side of the line. When he’s been in the lineup, he’s a big reason why the Vikes don’t give up many rushing yards. He’ll never be Julius Peppers (one of the best strongside ends in the leauge), but he’s definitely an improvement over Ray Edwards. Just remember that his job isn’t necessarily to get tons of sacks from that end of the line, but rather to make sure he holds the point of attack against double-teams from those big road-grader RTs and TEs. In that, he does a damn fine job. So, a first-round draft bonanza? Probably not. But a draft bust? Nope.

What he is

Udeze is the new Kenny Mixon (without the alcohol problems). Mixon was a solid D-lineman for many years, especially against the run, and there’s definitely value in that. It’s funny to me how guys on the DL are valued (or overvalued/expected to perform unrealistically, especially as draft picks). The truth is that there are as many or more star DL that weren’t first round picks. Jacksonville gave up more than we did for JA in order to draft a guy who most likely won’t total as many sacks in his career as we’ll get out of JA’s time here. And that’s not being mean—it’s just the reality in the NFL. If a guy gets 5-7 sacks and is a FA, he’ll cash in. If he gets more than 8, he’ll really cash in. The point is that not many guys are Jared Allen, and that a successful DL isn’t made up of only Jared Allens.

Now, having said all that, I’m really looking forward to seeing what Udeze can do opposite Allen this year. With Edwards and Robison also getting some snaps, these guys should be able to play full tilt every snap and avoid getting worn down against huge OL. Playing opposite JA, Tamba Hali averaged over 7.5 sacks a year—and without him he got 3.

He wasn’t drafted to be a LE though, he was supposed to be a RE who could sack the QB. And in that aspect he is a bust.

I personally think hes a bust but hes good enough to stick around in the NFL and be a OK player.

by Zoxide on Apr 27, 2009 4:42 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Some had him ranked as a top 10 pass-rushing DE

By that account, he was a bust long ago, but he had become a pretty good run-supporting LE before leukemia.

I hope he comes back from it and is an even better player, but realistically, he could be done. I wouldn’t personally call him a bust, and I’m glad he’s battled his disease to a non-life-threatening point. That’s the only important thing, really.

I agree

Glad that he is beating Luekemia….. and hope he continues to…… that is what really is important.

Hard to be a dominant DE if the other DE is not semi-dominant as well.

Before Jared Allen, Ray Edwards only got a few sacks. Now that JA is here, Ray is only 17.5 sacks away from Strahan’s record.

Too bad the seasons over.

by Bjorno on Apr 27, 2009 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even before Allen, Edwards had 5.5 sacks. Don’t ask me how that works. Possibly fromAllen getting to the QB just before him, or something. But I never really saw Edwards getting penetration all that often.

by Frost on Apr 27, 2009 9:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Edwards

was billed as a “boom or bust” guy, yet he has been just a ho-hum guy ever since, with or without Jared Allen. Maybe he needs to be a situational pass rusher rather than an every-down DE.

by KC Viking on Apr 28, 2009 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was sarcasm...

Ray hasn’t improved since Allen got here and has never really shown much. Then again, he doesn’t have the advantage of coming from the QB’s blindside so he is not going to get as many sacks.

I wouldn't say Draft BUST

But I would say he is an under-achiever.

Udeze has made some good plays in his career, and he is good against the run. But he certainly has not lived up to his draft status.

I think this leukemia thing will really give him the motivation he needs to become what he has the ability to be, and that is a top-20 DE in the league.

Don’t forget there are 2 starting DE’s, so saying he is top 20 is like saying he is top 10.

by Bjorno on Apr 27, 2009 8:24 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely not

He came in to upgrade the pass rush, and he did. In 2003, Lance Johnstone had 10, Kevin WIlliams, a rookie, had 10.5, no one else had more than 5. Johnstone was a situational pass rusher and not an every down guy, and he could be flat out dominated on the run. Kenny Mixon was just okay, and would disappear for chunks of games.

In Udeze’s rookie year of 2004, he was solid against the run and got a respectable 5 sacks, but if you look at old games, he brought consistent pressure from the perimeter, and he had a lot of hurries. With no one other than Kevin WIlliams and Udeze, it was easy to isolate those two with a C-G double team on KW, and tight end or RB help on Udeze, because God knows Chris Hovan couldn’t shake a block to save his life.

2005 was a knee injury, if I remember correctly, that took away most of his season.

2006 was coming back from the knee injury, stats were down, but again, he brought consistent pressure from the outside and had a fair amount of hurries.

A healthy 2007 saw him register 5 sacks and remain solid against the run, and of course, last season he was out while he battled leukemia.

Keep in mind he’s had little help, other than Kevin WIlliams, but in 2009, he’ll have Williams, Williams, and Jared Allen, who makes other people pee themselves from fear. If Udeze is healthy and still has his quickness, I can see him getting double digit sacks in 2009.

When I think of BUST

I think of someone who was drafted to be dominate and ended up out of the league in a few years. Not every player that is drafted in the first round is a pro bowler so I think a solid player that comes out of the 1st round is not always a bust. His trouble with cancer isn’t a injury problem but more of a freak occurrence. I hope he comes back and plays some good football, but either way it is hard to call him a bust because his best football might have been sidelined by a problem no one saw coming and that he had absolutely no control over/

Not a bust

Udeze has been a solid player for us when he has been on the field, though he has not been a spectacular player racking up double digit sacks. He does all the “little things” right, the type of player every team wants. The bust label comes from him not being able to stay healthy and remain on the field which is unfair because no amount of training could have prevented the cancer. He is a class guy and I hope to see him on the field this year healthy.

So far - Bust

His first year performance was mediocre at best, which is not what you expect from a 1st round draft pick of a lineman.

His second year was gone due to illness, but can he realistically expect to be gone a year of minimal exercise and no working out, then return and be a better lineman than he was when he was drafted?

Anything could happen, and I wish the best to Udeze (and the Vikes, of course :) ), but if he survives the roster more than the next year, I would be pleasantly surprised.

How much do you expect from a rookie DE?

Highly productive rookie DEs are few and far between.

He had a pretty good rookie season. It was the following seasons that make him a bust, in my opinion. Especially ’06. Not a single sack. For a first round DE, I would expect at least 8 sacks or so a season. Especially given how often QBs throw on us. Sack rates should be higher.

I said, 'So Far'

The jury’s still out on Udeze, and I really really hope he returns this year and can kick some serious tail on the field. His story isn’t finished, so it’s too early to hang a tag on him.

Kinda like Vick in that regard; will Vick be worth anything after a year and a half out of the NFL? The dirty birds tried shopping him around for 7th rounder and no one would bite, and Vick’s been offered an Arena Football contract. That might be his level of play now, it’s hard to be out for that long, and come back strong.

I’m pulling for Udeze tho :)

by DCPurple on Apr 29, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Arena contract! Hahahaha

Isn’t that contract for like 200 bucks a week? and 50 a game? Wow. To go from making millions and millions to making less than most of us do. That’s just disrespectful! And I heard he has to donate 100,000 to the local humane society. Don’t know how he can do that on 200/week, considering the fact that he’s bankrupt. LMAO

by PurplePeopleEaters09 on Apr 29, 2009 1:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

200/week, an extra 50 if they win their game.

by Frost on Apr 29, 2009 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

For arena?

That does not sound right at all.

We have a northern league team here in my hometown and they get paid $300 plus a win bonus.

The games are not even televised.

Udeze...

well i believe it is unfair to label Udeze a bust, just becasue of what he has been through. Hopefully he can get back to 100% and he returns to the vikes to help out our wounded defensive line thanks to the Star Caps incident. Get better Kenechi.
