Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

Are the signs pointing to a change in ownership?

Now before anyone freaks out, this is just my observation. When the Wilfs bought the Vikings in 2005 for $600 million they opened their wallets and made the statement that money would not be an issue when it came to accomplishing their goal of winning the Championship. Since then, they gave unheard of money to an offensive guard while coining the phrase “poison pill”. They brought in a rival kicker that had many times broken their hearts with last second points. They welcomed a second string running back that would later show why he was worth the money by rushing for over 1,200 yards in his first season. They mortgaged a draft on a defensive end with a mullet. They gave a wad to a receiver that many questioned was even worth it. There were many others that were signed in the hopes of finally bringing the Vikings to the promised land. As I see it, the Wilfs’ “5 year plan” has been a bust.

Star-divide

This season has seemed completely different. No more are we seeing the cash flow freely. It’s as if their money tree has developed root rot. They did attempt to sign the “Who’s Your Mama Guy”, but gave up when their bid limit was reached. The report that they were partly to blame for the whole Cutler-Cassel fiasco was completely overshadowed by the fact that no one even knew about it until shortly before The Bears gave up the ranch for one of the top 5 QBs. Then there was the unwillingness to resign a 6 time pro-bowl center until it was too late. They also were unwilling to resign a great team player that unselfishly sacrificed personal stats at the safety position to better help the team as a whole. Now they have broken off talks for a contract extension with one of the best shutdown corners in the league. I feel a change is near.

The signs are becoming clearer. As a consequence of a poor economy, it does not appear that the Wilfs will get new stadium legislature passed at least for the next couple of years. The Vikings team remains competitive, yet is still the least valued team in the NFL. Only a new stadium will change this. I believe the Wilfs believe that they have reached a point where they will get the best value for the team if they sell now. The Vikings are now valued at around $840 million. That is a cool $240 million profit in just 4 years.  What would a sale do for the Vikings and for Minnesota? While I believe Ziggy when he says that he has no intentions of moving the team, I would not put it past him selling the team to an owner that only wishes to do just that. Now these are only observations, and they may only be in my mind, but let us hope that the Vikings continue to win and they can continue to show the folks in Minnesota how much they deserve a new stadium. Long live the Minnesota Vikings!

Actually, what do you think the chances are Cutler will lobby for Shannahan next season?

by Frost on May 12, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that our GM Jerry Angelo basically bought himself

more time with the Cutler deal, but right now the focus has switched entirely to our OC Ron Turner, and to Lovie Smith. Angelo said after the draft that he had done all he could do, with the free agent signings, adding Cutler, and having a seemingly decent draft, and that it was now the responsibility of the coaches to best utilize the talent.

In my opinion, that is his way of saying that their arses are on the line. Turner has plenty to work with, and Lovie has been assigned the defensive play-calling. If either of them fails, they might be shown the door.

As far as Shannahan goes, who knows? There are some who think that Shanny would only return to the NFL as a GM+HC, although that obviously didn’t work out in Denver. But you also have to look at the recent history of the head coaches in Chicago… thay don’t really go out and find high-profile guys to fill the spot. Besides, Shannahan would require an enormous paycheck, and I really don’t think the Bears would pay him what he would require.

Shanny working again?

He was fired and has a ton of money coming to him on that contract. He could cool his heels for a couple of years and wait for the opportunity that HE wants. Although it wouldn’t surprise me at all if he ends up in Chicago.

Norm Green still sucks!

I love your statement at the end of your postings and agree unilaterally.. The only thing that I would add is to ask people to learn how to spell offence offense and defence defense. ;)

if Cutler kills it, i doubt Lovie goes anywhere

if he shits the bed, Shanny coudl be on his way. He’ll just need a new tanning place to go to. I’m sure Chicago has a few options

Zygi Wilf

Battle stations. This is not a drill.

The opera isn’t over until the gravitationally challenged lady sings. Having stood face to face with Mr. Wilf in public, my take is that he sincerely both loves football and hopes to win Lombardi Trophies for Minnesota; however, he is also a successful businessman who knows the best laid plans will sometimes go south on you, and you need that Plan B.

As people in Cleveland in the 90’s rediscovered (see Rams, Cleveland Rams), just because the team name has always had your location in it does not guarantee that they won’t win that first Super Bowl as the Baltimore Ravens or the LA Purple Cruisers.

Just because players are on the market doesn’t mean they are a good investment at any price. The cash flowing in has to out pace the cash flowing out. If your town is not bristling with cash to begin with, don’t be surprised when you leave the art auctions without the Rembrandt.

Like in football, the clock is running, and the prudent and trailing will always break into the two-minute drill before the final gun goes off. Please hold your collective breath, because when they call the Hail Mary, something is going to happen, one way or another.

Only time will tell.

3 years only and the 5 year plan is a bust?

Granted, he might have payed a little too much for Berrian, but I don’t think Berrian is a total bust. So far, other then a coach who has called questionable calls and questionable time management and threw a QB into the fray waaaaaaay to early, the only other issue I see is the fact that we may be sticking with this QB a little too long. As far as Cutler, he may be considered a top 5 by alot of folks, but I feel that is way over rated and given his Whining and Sniveling attitude as well, would push that even lower. As far as skills and ability, I actually like Orton more then Cutler. I seriously think the Bears over reached for him and shot themselves in the foot. And now there is alot of talk about “He who shall not be named” about possibly coming out of retirement again. Well, let him retired. One year is not going to be enough if he even last’s a year. Is there a possible QB to trade for? Perhaps, but the asking price might be high for high quality. I’m not sold on Sage, not sold on T.J. and Booty is a unknown quantity, but if any of them can get more then 9 TD’s this season and can stay away the big game INT like the Philly playoff game, then we might go far.

As far as the team being sold, while I am just as frustrated as Ziggy about the lack of a stadium or even the look at alternative ways to fund one by the state, the amount of money he has put into the team and the fact he hasen’t given up on it tells me he is sticking around awhile. Personally, I think Redneck McCombs would have bailed on Minnesota and moved the Vikings the first chance. Something tells me ZIggy may not be as quick on the draw as some might think and will do what he can and will wait things out a little longer if necessary.

Ye, I hated to see Birk go, but thinking over it, might have been the right time. While I would have rather seen him go in a trade, I think he is at the peak or just a little past it in his career. If your referring to Sharper not being resigned, no big loss. It wasent the fact he was sacrificing himself, but that his play was indeed dropping off and past his prime. We will do alright without either one of those guy’s.

As far as the economy, you’re gonig to see alot of teams letting popular and longtime players go, not only the Vikings. Youre going to see alot of stadiums not get built, put off or not renovated for a long time. This is not affecting only the Vikings. Other then a questionable at times coach and a not so great QB situation, I think things are actually pretty dang good right now. We dont have a owner spending money on every big name like the Redskins or Cowboys only to be mediocre every season. We actually have shown improvement, though perhaps in very small incruments. As far as T.J. and Childress, for both, it will be a make or break year. But even if both are gone at the end of the season or remain, it’s still nowhere near as bad as teams with a new stadium and with owners throwing money at players left and right due to their names.

Your points are well noted NM

The NFL actually approved the sale of the Vikings to the Wilfs almost 4 years ago to the day. I know it was May of 2005. That gives them 1 year to succeed at their “5 year plan”, even though I have no idea they have one…..but don’t we all? And if yours like mine, yours has probably failed as well. My point was that without a new stadium and today’s economy, there is no way the Vikings value can increase. This gives the Wilfs 2 choices. Either they can ride out the storm and hope for the best, or they can sell for a profit of 250 million now.

Yeah, I know we are going on year 4, but hey, I’m hoping for the best though the QB area I think will let us down, but you never know. Thing is, Wilf is a business owner, and I don’t think he would sell the Vikings at this point just to collect 250 mill when the guy is worth a ton more. I think he is going to wait it out, even sign a yearly lease extension until things get going. As my other fanpost, it is going to take the public harassing the politicians in great numbers and a off the wall idea to get them to finally see the lite. So folks, start checking who is your rep and spread the word and get on their arses. Believe me, if I was still living up there, I would be so annoying they would take out a cease and dissist order on me to stop the emailing and calling.

I really like the post

well thought out and brings up a topic we have not really discussed here. We all know a move is looming closer and closer every day, but in order for that to happen the Wilfs have made it perfectly clear that the team will be sold. The sudden wallet-pinching could be a sign of some slight buyer’s remorse. Or perhaps it is just a slowed down, different approach to team improvement. I believe that if Zygi/Mark etc. do eventually throw in the towel on being NFL franchise owners they better at least give another coach a shot with this crew first.

A nice, thought provoking post not related to BF. I’d like to hear more peoples’ thoughts on this subject. If Wilf is not interested in selling the team, then how long do you all think he hangs on for?

Ya know...

If we sign Nick Urban, and keep him around… Maybe we can con Target into giving Wilf some money for a new stadium. Hell, they did it for the Twins, why don’t they pick the best sports team in all of Minnesota? Nick Urban could be a nice bridge to negotiations, and a great PR move for both Target and the Vikes! Yes, abuse corporate America Zygi! Get us a new stadium!

Oh, and on the note of Zygmund making a profit… I doubt it. You said it yourself, it’s a tough economy. I don’t see anyone coughing up $840 million for a sports team… Even if that’s what Forbes values it at.

Not re signing sharper is a negative?

man, sharper really played like an old man last year. too slow, poor angles because he hasn’t adjusted to his new found lack of speed. failure to just fall on a few key fumbles instead he tried to scoop them up in run.

no, sorry. I don’t buy letting sharper go being a poor move. Not bringing in someone better than tyrell johnson might bite the team in it’s purple arse. But sharper clearly was no longer capable of starting for a top ranked defense. I also doubt he was willing to play st’s which is the usual extra duty of a backup safety.

the bears who were desperate for a warm body not named archuletta to come in and play safety for them. they passed on darrin. And the saints who eventually signed him, did so 7-8 days after his workout. That’s how teams go about signing players they are not excited about, but realize is likely thier best option at this time.

by The FNG on May 13, 2009 12:16 AM CDT reply actions

I can appreciate your point of view....but

I have to disagree on Sharper. He was asked to work in a defense that did not allow for him to use his ball hawking skills. The cover 2 that the Vikings use is very rigid. It does not allow for much improvision. It relies on steady and effective pass rushing. Without this, opposing offenses can pretty much predict where the defenders will be. Sharper took direction from his coaches while sacrificing his personal stats. To me, this makes a great player. I wish him all the best.

by NobleSavage on May 13, 2009 3:43 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, I admire shaper.

he’s a nice guy. Dam! his physique is incredibnle for his age!! heck for a guy half his age! And from everything I read. Sharper was good in the lockeroom and never complained(too much) about having to fit into the cover 2,

But the FACT remains. he’s lost a step and played poorly in 2008. Add in when he had the opportunity to make plays, he whiffed! I stand by my assertion that sharper is not of starter quality on a top rated defense. Would he have accepted vet minimum to be a backup? of course not! And if he had, would he have remained the consumate lockeroom good guy? likely not.

I wish sharper well, but it is not an indictment of the wilfs going CHEAP that darrin sharpers contract was allowed to expire without a new offer. Rather it is further proof that the wilfs do indeed want to field a winner in minnesota!

Oh and that 840 million price tag

the vikings are worth 840 million only if someone comes along and is willing to pay that for them.

the last 2 viking sales, seem to go less than smooth with last minute 2nd bidders coming in at the 11th hour..

In the current business environment, good luck finding the funding for an 840 million sports team purchase.

nah, the wilfs aren’t selling. not yet anyway.

I don’t think it would be hard to find a buyer for an NFL team while there is money flying all over the place in LA.

"money flying all over the place in LA?"

Huh????

They can’t even lure the sand diego chargers, who have an expired lease and a fan base nearby.

What money in LA? Where does a team play in LA? the existing sites have been proven worthless for NFL teams. And there is still not any ground breaking on the so called “new stadium” in the city of industry. That clown roskie GUARANTEED!!!!! an nfl team would be playing games in los angeles THIS YEAR! well, the echedule is out. did anyone notice any los angeles games on the schedule???

HAHAHA!!! I must assume this flying LA money you refer to is from this roskie cat. he has shown to be nothing more than the latest NFL smoke screen threat to hold nfl cities hostage so they can get thier new stadiums publicly funded. IF LA was such a legitimate deal, why on earth would the saints committ to staying in the poorest market the nfl plays in? No corporate sponsors. NOTHING in new orleans for tom benson. NADA!

cmon. money with wings in LA.? Show me something! Roskie is a joke!

so, the fall of 2008 came and went. and with it a little thing called a CREDIT CRUNCH.

not 1 shovel of sand has been moved. and no team is rushing to make it’s temporary home in the LOL (G)rose bowl or down in the GHETTO at the coliseum, which btw was built in 1923, and last renovated in 1979. The fans sit about 40 yards from the action which makes ticket sales plummett! Which btw, is the same thing that has happened to billionaire ed roskies fortune. PLUMETT! like a real bad year on the dow.

sorry, I really don’t mean to be rude, but los angeles is like soup, as in NO SOUP FOR YOU!
