Favre: It's Not Over

But did we really expect it to be? Favre sent X-Rays of his shoulder to the Vikings. Someone, just kill me. Seriously. This is never going away. It was folly to think that it might.

From Access Vikings:

"This should come as no surprise.

ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre sent X-rays of his right shoulder to the Vikings for medical evaluation. That was the news portion of an alert that just came out. We’ll track down more ASAP. At this point I’m done guessing what this guy might be doing.

This comes a day after Yahoo! Sports reported that Favre was going to retire. The key thing to keep in mind is this: Favre’s decisions change by the minute."

I could only hope he catches it. I’d rather trade or draft a young QB or give Booty a chance. He wont take us anywhere more then the guys we have now, no matter what he was like in the PAST.

Well, unless he loses his arm in a freak lawnmower accident, I don’t expect we’ll be done with this story until well into training camp.

I for one think this is a good thing. It’s hard to believe how many people at DN don’t want Favre coming to Minnesota. The Star had an online poll where 80% wanted him to come to Minnesota. Maybe we have some sheep in the crowd?

I thought yesterday was an example of how things related to Favre get blown out of proportion. But I will admit that I was starting to buy it. One article gets reproduced over and over and half the time they add their own spin. Pretty soon it seems like fact. Yahoo Sports?

Anyhow, I would have thought that yesterday might have changed some opinions when it looked like it was over. At least for me it made me realize that I do want him to come to Minnesota. I think the other QBs will benefit from watching him go through practices, game prep, scouting, the whole bit. But mainly, I think Favre represents the safest bet to make it to the Superbowl.

Also like the Vikings approach to this whole thing. Making sure he comes in healthy is paramount. But also making sure he prepares and meshes.

Stop acting so juvenile about a former Packer playing for the Vikes. It’s one thing to dislike Packer fans, I’m with ya. But it’s silly to want less than the best team you can get based on where they played before. As long as he comes in with the idea helping the Vikings win, he’s a Viking in my book.

by newmexvike on May 8, 2009 4:48 PM CDT reply actions

Mind you, that I buy Jared Allen’s deal where the Vikes will be good without him as well. I don’t think it’s a slight on the Viking QBs to try and get a guy like Favre. I think Sage will be fun to watch if it doesn’t work out. But the Vikes need to get the best available QB, and I think Favre is the one guy left that represents an upgrade.

BTW – There is no other QB that should be considered. I saw a picture of Vick today (I want to say St. Paul Press) on a Viking article. That would be a huge mistake.

by newmexvike on May 8, 2009 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I dont want him....

Due to the fct that

A. he is almosty 40, one year tops, anything more, wont happen.

B. May or may not be 100% after the tear

C. He is going to want top dollar and he is not worth it

D. He wont be taking us to a Superbowl victory and finally

E. He is only using us as a pawn to get back at the Packers. He could careless about the Vikings

Now, I don’t want him now at all. If this had been 10 years ago, oh hell yeah. My thought would have been ALOT differant. But 1 year for a guy that sint going to get us a Superbowl? Not worth it no moatter what the price.

I want him...

due to the fact that

A. At 40, he’s still better than Rosenfels at 32 or Jackson at 26.

B. Based on the reports, he won’t play unless he’s healthy. If he is, he’ll be fine.

C. I don’t care how much he’s paid, as long as the Vikes are under the cap and sign all the rookies.

D. He might not win the Superbowl, but he’s currently on a short list of QB’s who can. This just in, TJ and Rosenfels were stopped at the velvet rope.

E. True, but I don’t care. He’s a mercenary, I get it. The Vikes are just as complicit in this because they have the money to bring in the hired gun.

I swear, I’m buying a Favre jersey and I will be the first SOB to greet him as he comes off the plane. Of course, that planne would have to divert to St Louis, but you get the idea…

MilCard Fan

I agree with everything but E. While I think Favre wants to show Thompson he was wrong about a lot of things he wanted in Green Bay, I think the chance to win another Superbowl or two is probably just as great of a motivation. Any athlete only gets so many shots at winning one, so I’m sure he probably wants to make it count.

by newmexvike on May 8, 2009 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Elway had the exact same kind of injury Favre does. He didn’t get surgery because his tendon dislocated itself. And then he went out and won 2 SBs. So… I think Favre’ll be okay. I’m not saying he’ll take us to the SB just that the surgery won’t effect his throwing.

by Frost on May 8, 2009 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

One thing that I noticed

Is that the Vikings players seem to like the thought of BF coming to the Vikes (well, except for TJ and Sage, I imagine). Jared Allen and Bernard Berrian are both fans of his that have recently spoken in a positive manner.

Like I said earlier. I am behind whoever QBs us. My preference is Sage, but I will back TJ or Favre or McNabb (I wish).

by Lofoten on May 8, 2009 5:35 PM CDT reply actions

McNabb would be sweet. Better than Favre. I think he probably has another 6-9 years of football in front of him. But I don’t see McNabb going anywhere. Philly is cheap, but they won’t be for McNabb. That’s my guess. You don’t let franchise QB’s get away, right geuax?

It’s too bad McNabb plays for Philly though. He deserves to win a ring. They beefed up on offense the year they get rid of Dawkins. And I know they have other good D-Backs, but Dawkins was a leader and I think they’ll miss that on D.

Let me be more clear

The Eagles will not get rid of McNabb because he represents at least 5-6 years of productive play at the QB position. Franchises rarely allow a solid QB to get away. They are hard to come by and if you know you’ve got a proven commodity, you pay that QB what it takes to keep him. I would think Chi. fans could appreciate that concept as much as anyone.

Why Denver allowed Cutler to get away, makes no sense if he’s the real deal. I suppose no one would know the answer to that better than Denver, but I have my guess. What’s your’s?

Tell me all about how Jay flexed his muscles too much and made people feel uncomfortable. That he’s this great QB but Denver was so unreasonable that they could not mend fences. He’s a probowler.

Again, McNabb would be awesome, but there’s no way a McNabb or Warner gets away. It happens every year that when real talent becomes FAs, their team does what it takes to resign them. That’s what makes the NFL better than baseball, you can’t buy a good team.

Of course it sounds like you might not respect McNabb anyhow.

by newmexvike on May 9, 2009 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

McNabb's tenure in Philly has been one for the ages.

He is most definitely a very talented player, and has endured a love/hate relationship with that city much like Grossman dealt with in Chicago. On one hand, it surprises me that McNabb has managed to remain an Eagle. On the other hand, Philly has done a decent enough job of keeping him, so maybe it shouldn’t surprise me, for the reasons you stated.

Jay’s time in Denver came to an end, the best I can surmise, because he and McDaniels just weren’t a good fit for each other. Did they let a franchise QB get away? Certainly. Did Jay’s attitude play a role in it? Maybe, maybe not. Regardless, as I have stated previously, that happened because Cutler was not McDaniels’ guy.

McDaniels wanted his QB, they guy he developed, the guy he was familiar with. I doubt he ever thought Cutler wasn’t incredible talent, buy he wasn’t his guy. My previous analogy was when Parcells went to Miami… he brought as many of his guys on board as he could. Parcells just had more pull than McDaniels did.

Yes, on the surface, before Cutler ever plays a game, it can be argued that the price Chicago paid was too steep. But Cutler’s effect on that team, and winning games, will ultimately decide if it was a good move. We paid an arm and a leg for a potential franchise QB. Sometimes though, that is what it takes.

And back to McNabb, i honestly think his best days are behind him. I don’t think his health will hold up, or his production, for more than 3 or maybe 4 more seasons.

by Dane Noble on May 9, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

funny

I would think if Cutler was a true franchise QB, Denver would have made him McDaniel’s guy. I think he is an average QB overall, loaded with talent, but missing other, less statistically measurable talents for being a QB (leadership). Now compared to the other FA’s that were truely available (Warner was never “out there”), Cutler was the cream of the crop. But compared to Jeff Garcia, a lot of QB’s could fit that bill. In fact, I think Cassel has more upside than Cutler, so maybe he wasn’t the cream of the crop.

McNabb is a stud. His best days are far from over. He may not break off as many big runs as he did in the past. But his experience will compensate that for years to come. He’s an accurate passer with a big arm.

I used to hate Favre when he was a Packer. I said he was going to retire 6-7 years ago, mainly because I was HOPING. But he kept coming back. And his experience always compensated for his age. When you look at Favre’s career in the Metrodome, he struggled early on, but some of his best games there were in his mid to late 30’s. Athletes today stay in so much better shape, that QBs are more and more playing until 40+. They don’t need to sprint very often anyhow.

by newmexvike on May 9, 2009 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

McNabb will extend his time by running less and becoming more of a pocket-passer, something he’s been trending towards anyway. Can they get 5 or 6 more years out of him? That depends on McNabb’s play and whether or not the Eagles get a hold of a young replacement any time soon. In fact…. they’ll probably be in the hunt for a hot QB draft prospect next year, or the year after at the latest.

As for Cutler… I’ve said before, and I’ll say it again; The Viking’s blew it big time, and the Bears got a helluva deal. But then, the Vikings passed on Pennington too, and they passed on Garcia, and they passed on Cassell… and as far as I know, they didn’t float the balloon when Warner was briefly available. Ergo, Childress and Speilman must be very certain that T-Jack is better than any of those guys. That I’m not screaming for their their heads on a silver platter only means that I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt. For now :)

Yes, I’ve seen you concede that only time will tell on Cutler, but I disagree. That same position applies to every player, in every off-season, it’s a null-statement. The fact is, Cutler came cheap. He was a first rounder to begin with, so one of those is a wash. The second 1st round pick covers the cost of a pro-bowl quality player, something that many 1st round picks never achieve. Orton needed to go, best thing for his career and the Bears, never good to push someone back like that and the Bears don’t really need him now anyway. A 3rd for a 5th…. that’s what I figure the Bears really paid for a pro-bowl, franchise quality QB who’s proven himself over 3 years with a crap team, and will be the mainstay of the Bears offense for the next decade and then some. Who cares if the Bears stink the place up next year, getting Cutler isn’t about just next year…. it’s about the next 10-15 years, building around him and supporting his strengths. Yeah, you guys made out, congrats.

I am from Hattiesburg Mississppi and as i stated at the end of last year if Favre’s shoulder is healed he will play for the Minnesota Vikings which is what he wanted all along no thanks to the Green Bay Packers. It is the talk of every bar in Hattiesburg people who know him say it is what he has wanted since Green Bay let him go. Go Vikings.
