Favre Will Be at Vikings' Training Camp

So sayeth WCCO's Mark Rosen, who is getting his info from the ever popular/dreaded "source":

Barring some unforeseen major physical setback, Brett Favre will be at training camp in Mankato when they open up the end of July, a source has told WCCO's Mark Rosen.

That source said that Favre and the Vikings have indeed come to a contractual agreement, with heavy incentives. The Vikings equipment manager has already ordered number 4 purple jerseys with his name on it.

Well, then. . .only about a month until Training Camp.  That should leave everyone plenty of time to get the proverbial popcorn ready.

What if?

What if JDB decides that he doesn’t want to sell his jersey to Favre. Does he have that right?
I wouldn’t sell it if I were JDB. I’d be like, ‘Nah man, I’m #4 around here. Find a different one…..Punk-Ass"..lol.

Booty

If he’s not willing to give up number 4 which he should do for the respect of one quarterback named Favre, but if not I am sure there is a couch somewhere where he can watch the Vikings play this year. I am sure the vikings would release him just based on the fact he cant play and that he was unwilling to consent to their plans. I mean they wouldnt need him anyway. So either way number 4 will be Brett Favre for the Vikings next year

by caudle_andrew on Jun 24, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

No, JDB will give up the number.

I mean, it’s not like Favre is going to be here for longer than a year.

JDB can make some cash, and maybe a friend in high places by giving up the number to Favre.

Then, next year JDB just takes the number back. That is, unless the Vikes retire Favre’s number before the Pack can :)

That Favre has not signed a contract yet? How often does any team announce that a player has not signed a contract with them? That would be insane.

Stop reading this BS in the news. They only write this crap because there is no real news to write, and this kind of trash will cause a buzz, making their advertisers happy.

It takes about nine months to make a baby, no matter how many people you put to work on the development.

by Elgar on Jun 24, 2009 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Because he is signed!

He has been signed, mind you with contingencies. A player doesn’t refer to the team as “we” if there is no connection. You would have to be an idiot to think something is not done and I’m sure there are escape clauses for team and player to a certain date. That is the hold up. I am sure no one would hold it against either party to say “an agreement has been reached. At such and such day the Vikings will evaluate the health of BF and decide to execute the agreement” Brett, on the other hand, can say I agreed to play, but the arm is not what I was hoping for and feel it is best to nulify the agreement and be fair to myself and the team.
I didn’t need Mark Rosen to tell me the obvious. I just had this gut feeling this was the deal when BF had the surgery.

so this is a good spot. #1 a vikings Brett Favre Jersey is almost against the law. I will wear that jersey proud every game this season. Brett Favre as a viking wont last a contractual year, it’ll last in the hearts of fans forever, especially on NOV 1st when Favre goes into Green Bay and beats the Packers with the grace and glory. Oh sweet victory…

Totally agree.

Even if you’re incredibily excited for Favre to join the team, why blow eighty bucks on a jersey that will only be relevant for one, maybe two years tops? I’d much rather spend money on a Percy Harvin, Jared Allen, AP (though every Vikings’ fan should be issued one), Greenway, Kevin Williams, or any other guy with a long term deal.

Then you can wear it for more than one season.

>>why blow eighty bucks on a jersey that will only be relevant for one, maybe two years tops?

Now, let me make clear; 1. I’m excited for Favre to be the Viking QB, because he’s a great fit. 2. I would not buy a Favre jersey because there are many other players I would get first (I have a #28, my kid, #28, wife #29). But the relevancy of a purple #4 will NEVER die. Especially if you have Packer relatives. When it’s all over, GB can’t take back that he was a Viking and the rest of the legacy is TBD.

by newmexvike on Jun 24, 2009 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes and no.

If a player retires as a Viking, or was a longtime Viking staple, then I think it’s okay to wear their jersey after they’re done. Cris Carter is a great, recent example. Even if Brett Favre retires after this season, he still won’t be “retiring as a Viking.” He’ll always be a Packer, and Green Bay and the folks over there will forgive what’s happened, eventually. He has been, and always will be, a hero in Green Bay. They’re just having a small dispute right now.

So to me, if you got a Favre jersey, it would be fine to wear this year, no problem. But after that? I don’t think it’s as relevant. Again, this is just my opinion, so take it for what it is.

A few more examples:

Cris Carter – easily a yes.
John Randle – totally wearable.
Randy Moss – toss up; he was great for seven years, but will be remembered for being on the Patriots now.
Daunte Culpepper – no way, for me.
Robert Smith – of course.

Get where I’m coming from? Makes sense…in my head. Chances are it’s just rambling here.

Wore my Carter Viking Jersey

at a Dolphins game and got a wave from him. Carter was always pretty personable with fans during warm up periods before the game. Of course he couldn’t be socializing but he did try to make some contact with the fan base. during those times. Some guys seem so ’heady" while they are just standing there. A simple wave to a kid goes a long way ( or a big kid like me). I wear my Carter jersey to games often. Maybe cause I remember a couple of those moments.
I think I told the story where he tossed a ball to me in Tampa-priceless memory!

Was this just a normal Dolphins game, or the “He can’t kick it that far!!” game versus the Vikes?? If you were there for that game, that’s AWESOME. I love Cris Carter, and always will, but man, I laughed so hard at him after that kick went through the uprights.

One game in Miami

and then the year of the big kick. The toss was at a Vikes/Bucs game. Everyone told me to take off with the ball. He held out his hand for me to toss it back and for once I hit a pin point throw. CC caught it and gave me a thumbs up on the way back to the locker room after the warm up period.
I only wish I would have got it on video.
People were telling me I was a idiot for not ditching off with it. I just couldn’t. I just felt it a like spitting in my teams face when he trusted me to do the right thing. Bit old fashioned, but thats me.

Okay, Now I'm Mad at Cris

He never throws me a ball, even though I’ve worn his jersey. (Just kiddin’ #80.)

Of course, I did get the wave from him, which was better than the dazed look I got from Troy Williamson when he saw me wearing his jersey at Mankato during camp. (At least, I think he saw me. Could explain a lot.)

I’m with ctowner35 on this issue. Wait till Target comes out with the purple Favre el cheapo jersey. They’ll even be selling those out here in California.

ok, what if the Vikes win back to back SuperBowls, does he retire a Viking then? It would be more rings than he got in GB.

I know that’s such a big IF it dos not fit on the screen, I’m just saying….

But the #4 jersey will always be relevant because it represents a slap in GB’s face. I think they should make a limited edition with Calvin on the shoulder peeing on a Packer logo. That would always be relevant.

If I wear a Herschell Walker Vikes Jersey

Does that make me less a fan because of a stupid trade? I root for the team – not one player.

Off topic question- Not a big NBA fan but what is the feeling on the draft trade the Wolves made. Doesn’t seem like they positioned themselves to get 2 key guys that could help. Keep the 5 and 6 and package some deal to get Rubio and the big guy from UConn. Sorry not football related

by CitrusFLViking on Jun 24, 2009 12:04 PM CDT up reply actions

This is the mantra of Favre we're talking about

not any ol’ guy who used to play for one team but now plays for another. Comparing wearing a BF Vikes jersey to any other player just doesn’t hold any water.

I understand the seriousness of this situation in relation to a football player is very different……. but not so much to me. Brett will always be the enemy to me, and I’ll never be caught dead wearing his fatigues.

by puddnhead on Jun 28, 2009 7:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Not a stupid trade, but an utter disregard for the owner's manual

Having seen Herschell play between the Hedges in Athens, the mistake made was not the trade, the mistake was buying a thoroughbred and giving him plays meant for a quarterhorse. Herschell was a north-south kinda guy. They just confused his multiple personalities giving him all that east-west stuff. Poor Herschell probably had a team meeting with himself in the huddle and got horribly confused. The idea was to rev him up and shoot him through a hole straight at the goal post. You don’t buy a dragster to fetch groceries in.

by Elgar on Jun 24, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I actually loved Herschell. It wa just a pisser that he wasn’t used right. He will always be one of my favorite college players ( I actually bid on a autographed Georgia jersey of his).
I just could figure out why it didn’t work with him here.
That was not a cut on Herschell. Like you said, if it was play calling mistakes you think someone would have thought that through thus blowing the picks.

by CitrusFLViking on Jun 24, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

+1

That always puzzled me, the Vikings never used Walker in a way that maximized his strengths.

On the horrors of the trade… the original body-swap of the trade was bad enough, the problem was made a lot worse with the ‘escalation’ clause that said that if the players that Dallas got from the Vikes, didn’t work out, Dallas would get Viking draft picks in lieu (the conditional picks). It let Dallas cut players and pick up 1 or 2 draft picks each, gutting the Vikings draft for the next 4 years. Emmitt Smith should have worn Purple. We got an awesome FB that we proceeded to misuse to the point of making him useless, and the Cowboys got 3 Super Bowls.

The problem I have with Brett becoming, a Viking, is that if he did take the Vikings to a super bowl and won it, the packer fans would be saying, “it took a packer to help the Vikings win their first super bowl”, and I dont think I could stomach that

Seriously, if the Vikings finally get their superbowl and you still can’t enjoy it for some picky reason, you need to get a grip man!

Anyway, if the Vikings win, that means (obviously) that the Packers don’t. Also Remember...

Packer fans tend to be communicationally challenged. I still can remember Randy Moss once clearly imploring them at Lambeau, “Read the f*@(I#g scoreboard!”

I guess they just can’t read lips like me.

Why get Favre Vikes Jersey?

Because somewhere, somehow, a packer fan with spontaneously combust upon seeing the combination of 4, Favre, and Purple. That is good enough reason alone.

Just Avert Your Eyes

while Brett is on the field. When the cheer level goes up in the dome, you can quickly figure out if Harvin or Berrian or Shank or AD is taking it to the house. Continue to wear what you’ve always worn. It’s really not all about Brett.

I was talking about...

Watching a Packer fan spontaneously combust. If he joins, he joins, and I’ll be forced to root for the old bastard. I still don’t have to like it, though.

Favre

what about him paying the other players $1000.00 each, every player on team for EACH interception? he threw what, 20 ints last years/ that’ll get him throwing forward, and not on his ass.

Nah he'd just retire half-way through the season lol

Fans stuck in the 80's are lame. Respect the past, live in the now.
