The Other 20 Worst Things to Happen to the Vikings
In the "Favre Stages of Grief" article from this weekend, I opined that the Vikings signing Brett Favre wouldn't even be one of the 20 most disappointing things to happen to the Minnesota Vikings.
And now, thanks to Nate Sager, I have proof. Check out his write-up. (And I apologize to Nate if I spelled his name incorrectly.)

Hm...
He has a point. Actually, he has several. Troy Williamson… ugh. Still a bitter taste in my mouth.
That being said, signing Brett Favre could still be one of the worst things to happen to the Vikings. It depends on his performance, of course, but I’m anticipating I might still feel bitter about it in 5 years if it turns out badly.
In AP I trust
Just say no to Favre.

Gonzo! Offer this guy a writing position! That comes to my 2nd favorite post of all time.
"He didn’t call me or anything. It was an accident, but a lot of people would have called to see how someone is doing after they got hit in the head. Especially if they had to go on the DL." — Morneau on pitcher Ron Villone after an April 2005 beaning.

Well, when you say it that way...
I have to ask. Which is your favorite?

Ugh...
Great article. I was only 10 years old when Gary Anderson missed that field goal. I distinctly remember crying my eyes out after Atlanta won it in OT and smashing my favorite toys to pieces in sheer disgust. My dad, who would normally be furious over such outbursts, came into my room and said to me “It’s OK son, I understand.” I couldn’t talk or think about the Vikings for at least 3 years.
Thinking about still makes me upset.
Favreageddon brings a sliver of hope for changing fortunes. But more than likely, its just another letdown for an entire fan base that just can’t seem to catch a break.

I was stationed in Japan at the time, watching the game in the morning. One of my fellow airmen was an Atlanta fan.
By halftime, I started doing the Dirty Bird dance in front of him, in a friendly mocking manner (Jamal Anderson, RB for the Falcons used to do that dance after every TD). After taking a 20-7 lead, Denny Green decided to play prevent, instead of allowing the Vikings to do what they did best that year (tear it up on offense), the Falcons regained their feet and confidence and went on to tie it up, sending us to an overtime loss of 30-27. Needless to say, I got to watch the other guy dance the Dirty Bird in front of me, while I tried to figure out WHAT THE HELL Denny Green had been thinking.
That was a good post by the writer. It should have been called the Trail of Tears of the Minnesota Vikings. Hopefully that turn into a nice melancholiac memory lane after we finally win a SB.

I was working at a YMCA just outside of Minneapolis when that field goal was missed, I remember standing by the fuseball table thinking “we got this”, then felt that sinking feeling when he missed the field goal.

Sinking feeling are the perfect words to describe the end of that game. My gut hurt.

Brutal
I remember all of those, and reading them again, one after another, was like being kicked in the gut. Repeatedly.
The final hell of it is that there’s no counter-balance. There are no Rings to show that the struggles and pain paid off in the end. No bright rewards. Just relentless kicking.
One has to wonder if there really is some sort of metaphysical curse playing out, for this to go on for so long, with so many different coaches and players, decade after decade. Maybe that’s just a wild-ass excuse, but then, you read that list of top 20 and you have to wonder.
If Favre doesn’t lead the Vikings to a Super Bowl victory, can we all go down to Kiln, Louisiana, to lynch him? Good Lord, at least give us something!
But let’s think happy thoughts :)

#1
It was less high profile than the ‘99 loss, yes, but I still say in the big picture the Walker trade has to be #1, not #2 I still don’t understand how they could have thought that was a good idea, it destroyed the team not for just one game, but for years.

Contingency
They traded the Cowboys a bunch of marginal players with a contingency clause that if those guys didn’t produce, the Cowboys could take a Vikings draft pick or two, in lieu….. all the Cowboys had to do was cut one of those guys to get 1 or 2 extra draft picks. The Vikings front office (read: Mike Lynn) was incredibly naive to think that Johnson wouldn’t take advantage of that clause….
