I like Marshall but I have to go with Alan Page
Jim Marshall is probably the hardest to argue against because he played his whole career (all what was it 18, 19 seasons?) for our Vikings. The reason why I chose Page was his play on the field for our beloved Vikings. IMO no Viking had an impact on the game as he did when he was on the field. Had Moss remained a Viking and had an attitude adjustment then he would have been right there and also we still haven’t seen the best of Peterson yet. You could throw in Chris Carter, John Randle, Ron Yary, Randell McDaniel to name a few. I would leave out Fran Tarkington because he demanded and got traded to the Giants. I love the Joe Kapp vote too, he played the game the way it was meant to be played.

Jim Marshall
Hard to argue with your pick of Alan Page but sadly, he didn’t play his whole career with the Vikings. Jim Marshall did. He came to the Vikes from Cleveland in their first year (1961) and played 19 more years at defensive end. He was there before Alan Page arrived from Notre Dame and he was still there when Alan left. You can’t name one other player who has played 20 years on the defensive line without injury at a high level because there isn’t one. Jim Marshall is “Mr. Viking”. I would however choose Alan Page as my second pick.

While much is made of his wrong way run, little is stated about how afterwards he played like a beast to overcome his mistake. The Vikes weren’t a very good team that year but they did manage to win that game. The error didn’t hurt them.

He Felt Terrible Afterwards
The other night I watched a replay of “Missing Rings-1969 Minnesota Vikings” on the NFL Network. One of the moderators for the piece was Jim Marshall himself and they showed a clip of his wrong way run. I have no doubt that he was thinking that he was going to score a touchdown and help his team. When he realized his mistake, he put his hands to his head as if “OMG! WHAT HAVE I DONE???” The part goes on to state that later in the game he caused a San Francisco fumble that Carl Eller scooped up and ran in for a touchdown (the right way) giving Minnesota the win. I don’t believe the mistake says as much about Jim as his determination to overcome it and his success in doing so.

What If...
You’re right, Keith Millard was a true beast and we can only wonder what might have been if he hadn’t gotten hurt. He will always be remembered by the true Viking fans.
