BURBANK, CA (June 2, 2009) – As Vikings fans prepare for the 2009 NFL season, Warner Home Video (WHV) and NFL Films will showcase their purple pride with the release of NFL Minnesota Vikings Five Greatest Games. For the first time ever, Vikings faithful can own the original network broadcasts of five legendary games in franchise lore in one collectible DVD set. NFL Minnesota Vikings Five Greatest Games will hit stores August 18 for $39.92 SRP.

This five-disc DVD set gives fans of the Twin City franchise the chance to relive the greatness of the Vikings’ 1998 season as Randall Cunningham threw for three touchdowns in a spectacular stomping of the Arizona Cardinals. Feel the thunderous ovation in the Metrodome as Adrian Peterson sets an NFL single-game rushing record. All these moments and more are captured in this action-packed DVD set that will surely leave Vikings fans wanting more!

“The Minnesota Vikings have provided their fans with some amazing moments throughout the years,” said Don Polite, Executive Director, Partner Brands Marketing, Warner Home Video. “This five-disc DVD set illustrates improbable playoff victories, heroic performances by Vikings legends such as Adrian Peterson, Randy Moss and Chris Carter as well as the most thrilling victories in team history for to enjoy over and over.”

NFL Minnesota Vikings Five Greatest Games
January 9, 1988 – Vikings 36 – 49ers 24 – Huge Playoff victory over the Niners.
January 1, 1999 – Vikings 41 – Cardinals 21 – Playoff win in 1998
January 9, 2000 – Vikings 27 – Cowboys 10 – Playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys
November 4, 2007 – Vikings 35 – Chargers 17 – Adrian Peterson runs for 296 yards
December 28, 2008 – Vikings 20 – Giants 19 – Vikes top Giants on last-second FG to make the Playoffs

To say the least I'm extremely dissappointed there are no Vikings games from the 60' s or 70's...c'mon, Minnesota 23 LA 20 in the playoffs in 1970 is one of the greatest victories ever...hopefully a second set can be released with some of these older games...

I am extremely disappointed in the

games Warner has chosen! are they serious!? This list is kind of a joke… Why in the heck is our recent Giants game on there? I mean it was fun and a big win…. but really, not one of the 5 greatest of all time!

Also, I understand that they wanted to showcase some of the 1998-99 season, but I don’t think the playoff game against those lowly Cards deserves that much distinction.

There is not a single game against our hated Packers on this list…. which is why I would put our 2004 Wild Card victory AT Lambeau on the list…. this is probably one of the victories I’m most proud of as a Viking fan 20 years of age.

The Giants win was the first time since its creation that the Vikings took the division title. That’s why it’s “important.”

We also would have gotten the division had we lost it.

The bears choked.

thank you...

that game does not belong on this list.

by skiumah06 on Jun 3, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What?

The Vikings beat the hell out of the Giants 41-17 in 07’. ADAP rushed for 225 yards, and E.Manning threw 3-picks. I think the Vikings played and beat the g-men back in 06’ too.

Last years win against the Giants was probably one of their ugliest wins ever and should be removed from the list….IMO

by chaosg on Jun 6, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was LAST YEAR’s Giants game, not the season before last. Last season we played them in game 17 and took the game on a last-second FG from Longwell to clinch the Division Title for the first time since the NFC North’s creation. It wasn’t that great of a game though, so it kinda sucks they put that one on and left out the GB Playoff game.

by Frost on Jun 6, 2009 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't mean to beat a dead horse here!

I don’t remember what year they switched from the Central division to the North, but the Vikings beat the Giants 24-21 in 05’. they beat the Giants 41-17 in 07’, and they beat the Giants last year 20-19.

I love beating the Giants ever since we had that embarrassing 41-0 playoff loss back in 00’. I believe the Vikings are 3-0 with the Giants since that game.

by chaosg on Jun 7, 2009 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

I know they’ve beat the Giants before. That’s not why it’s a significant victory. If it had been the Ravens or the Lions that game, it would be on the list. Why? Because it was the first NFC North Championship for the Vikes. I think they switched from Central to North in… I wanna say ‘03, but that’s probably wrong.

Either way, last year was the first year the Vikes were NFC North Division Champs. That’s why it’s on there. It’s just the creators lame attempt at being sentimental. Nobody really cares about that game. I’m just saying, that’s probably why it’s on there.

by Frost on Jun 7, 2009 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay I get it.

The 08’ game was special because the Vikings won the division for the first time since 00’ when they won that game. :~)

by chaosg on Jun 7, 2009 2:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm guessing...

there are some sort of behind-the-scenes copyright restrictions that limited the number of games they could choose from. That’s the only explanation. Well, either that, or these people are just complete morons. There are only 2 games on that list that I would even CONSIDER for this DVD. Oh well.

My fave Vikes game

Dec. 14th, 1980. Vikes clinch the division title on a Hail Mary from Tommy Kramer to Ahmad Rashad. 28-23 final score over the Browns. . I was in college, in southern Wisconsin, at the time; and both the Bears fans and Packer fans were not amused by my celebration. Below is a link to the youtube video of the Hail Mary.

ha that was sweet!

I had never seen/heard of anything from that game before.

by skiumah06 on Jun 3, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I remember that game

…I was in high school at the time and watching it in my bedroom. I was ticked off because the Vikes were down by 2 or 3 TDs, then they started airing it out and amazingly they managed to win the game. I really couldn’t remember who they were playing until your post. I kept on thinking it was against the Eagles. That was a fun game.

Another game I personally enjoyed was in the 1987 season playoffs against the Saints. This was when the Saints fans adopted their “who dat” slogan. I remember when the media talked to a couple of the Saints players and fans about the Vikings coming to their home to play them, they just responded with “who dat”. The Vikings showed them who dat was by beating them 44-10.

The Saints had the second best record in the league that year with a 12-3 record. That season was a strike season and only had 15 games in the season. The Vikings went on to beat the 49ers who had the best record that season with a record or 13-2. Then went on to play the Skins when RB Nelson dropped a pass in the endzone that would’ve tied the game as time ran out.

I always thought if the Vikings won that game against the Skins, then they probably would have won the SB that year because they would have played the Broncos, a team they already beat that season with relative ease. While that was probably my best year as a Viking fan, it was one of the most heartbroken too.

December 28, 2008 – Vikings 20 – Giants 19 – Vikes top Giants on last-second FG to make the Playoffs

THIS GAME MADE IT ON THE LIST? This list BLOWS. Whoever came up with this should be shot multiple times. No, but seriously this is bad.

i hear everyone complaining

and i’m right there with you but really…we’re all gonna buy this anyway right?

by iseepurplepeople on Jun 3, 2009 4:06 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah

i’ll still buy it. I want to see more highlights from the niners game where we upset Montana!

The thing with lists...

…is that no matter what 5 games you pick there are going to be people out there that don’t agree with something or another about your list. Everyone has an opinion and will bitch about something. But this list is truly exceptionally bad.

Now, before you get your panties in too big of a bunch note that Warner actually had licensing issues preventing them from showing any game approximately pre-1980. Don’t quote me precisely on the date and I couldn’t find the article where I saw this. But some of the old classics they couldn’t get on there for whatever reason. So I won’t bring up anything pre-1988 since that is their oldest game.

With that said…here are my problems with the list.

January 1, 1999 – Vikings 41 – Cardinals 21 – Playoff win in 1998
Freaking retarded. Vikes were supposed to win and did. Cards sucked. It was a crappy game.
For that magical 1998 season it should have been the Thanksgiving Dallas game. Perfect display of their greatness that year. But the most important game of our generation was the loss to Atlanta, but they obviously only picked victories so leave that out lol.

November 4, 2007 – Vikings 35 – Chargers 17 – Adrian Peterson runs for 296 yards
Okay this was a sweet game and AP went crazy. But it should have been the 34-31 overtime victory over the Bears. That was probably the best game of the regular season in the NFL. See-saw high scoring victory capped by AP’s overtime kick-off return to set up winning FG.

December 28, 2008 – Vikings 20 – Giants 19 – Vikes top Giants on last-second FG to make the Playoffs. This is the worst pick of them all. Vikings semi-choke but still end up barely winning a game against Giants 2nd string. To make it worse, they didn’t even HAVE to win the game because the Bears ended up losing and every fan knew that before the damn game winning field goal. Terrible choice.

The Green Bay playoff victory? How in god’s name is that one not in there. Someone needs to be shot. That is top 5 ALL TIME. The Vikings weren’t that good and no chance of Superbowl but they went into Lambeau and “kicked they ass” (Randy Moss).

by Sand0 on Jun 3, 2009 5:59 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

obvious the list was not selected by actual viking fans or they would have realized the significance of the green bay playoff win.

by iseepurplepeople on Jun 4, 2009 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

+1

But I do agree with 296 being in there…. that was a huge record he broke. 296 yards… wow.

by skiumah06 on Jun 3, 2009 6:56 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree.....

This one should be on there…..I was there and it was almost like a movie….

We did SO crappy the first half, and then, all of a sudden, AD brings us all the way back and over the top.

My buddy gets season tickets every year and invites me to see one and I picked that one cuz I thought I’d just drink beer ‘n’ watch us get beat. I even remember saying, “We’ll probably get our butts kicked.”
NOPE. HA!

So, yeah…..in conclusion….this will be a nice one to watch over again.

by gerkvoltage on Jun 3, 2009 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I’d take the 296 over the Bears victory. Don’t get me wrong, the Bear’s game was a good one, but not only did Peterson break the single-game rushing record vs the Chargers, Cromartie had that amazing missed FG return, longest play in NFL history. Plus, just from that game, the Chargers went from 7th in rushing to 22nd.

What's more fake?

Warner’s selection of these 5 games as the “greatest” and not “the best games certain companies had the right’s to” or The Hills claiming to be a “reality show” instead of “completely scripted garbage”?

by ericj69 on Jun 4, 2009 12:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

It's like the WWE of TV...

They pretend it’s real, but everyone knows it’s fake. Did anyone happen to see the finale? My fiancee watched it, so I watched (begrudgingly); how anyone could think that it’s real is beyond me. I can go into detail, but it’s slightly embarassing that I watched it and know some of the characters. Damn trashy T.V.

Oh yeah...

Me and Spencer, we’re close.

Acutally, I think Heidi and Spencer are pretty smart. They’re extending their 15 minutes of fame a LONG ways. They know exactly what they’re doing. I think it’s great. And he freely admits he’s whoring himself out to stay in the public eye and make money. That’s what’s the best.

*SIGH*

yeah i watched it last night. i find i can’t NOT watch it. like this time he’s not going to miss, or the play calling at the end would suddenly go back to the way it was all season….

Not only do I

slam my fist on the table. But I sob violently into my beer. That waters down my beer. Thus, I become more sad. So I don’t watch it anymore. : (

by Odin on Jun 5, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

DAMN!

Yeah I watched that too! They played it twice last night and then again this afternoon…. oh the humanity.

What really got me was the pass Moss dropped in the endzone in the first half…. totally forgot about that! Also, the picks that Griffith could have had to seal that game…. ugh!

I also found that I could not tear my eyes away from watching.

Wow!

Four superbowls in the 1970’s and the first year they use as a greatest game is the 1998 season? I really enjoyed the 1998 season and I am still sad thinking about the wasted opportunity with that team but how can anyone overlook 1969 with Joe Kapp, Carl Eller, Alan Page, Jim Marshall, Gary Larsen and the suprise and joy of that first Superbowl season? Okay, I still hurt when I think of how it ended but what a great season.

And what about the years with Tarkenton after that? I too hope that many more such DVDs are released featuring the Purple Gang.
